Airline sustainability with the founder and CEO of the SimpliFlying aviation marketing, branding, and communications consultancy firm. Also, actions by Boeing, the outcome of the American Airlines vs. Skiplagged.com suit, US airlines performing poorly in a global ranking, United Airlines and passenger accessibility, and the U.S. Army looks for a new heavy-lift helicopter. Guest Shashank Nigam is the founder and CEO of SimpliFlying, one of the world's largest aviation marketing, branding, and communications consultancy firms. Shashank's new area of interest is airline sustainability. Shashank explains that airline brand experience and engagement are longer than other products and services, especially with long-haul flights. The branding fundamentals remain the same, but how airlines build trust has changed. In 2008 it was airline presence on Twitter and Facebook. During the pandemic, it was health and safety. Now, airline sustainability has grown in importance. The Sustainability in the Air podcast explores what airline, airport, and technology firm CEO innovators are doing. Shashank gives an example of how creative financing is needed for airline sustainability. We also consider what Boeing must do to restore trust and hear about the very interesting company culture at SimpliFlying. SimpliFlying was founded in 2008 and has worked with over 100 aviation clients in airline branding, customer experience, digital marketing, crisis communications, and sustainability initiatives. SimpliFlying's analysis and insights have been featured in leading international media outlets such as BBC, CNN, CNBC, Reuters, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. Shashank is the author of Soar: How the Best Airline Brands Delight Customers and Inspire Employees and Sustainability in the Air: Innovators Transforming Aviation for a Greener Future. Look for him on LinkedIn and join over 4,000 Sustainability in the Air subscribers which separates the signal from the noise in sustainable travel. Aviation News United teams with United Spinal to strengthen accessibility Under a new agreement, the United Spinal Association will help advise and support United Airlines to improve the travel experience for customers with disabilities. The United Spinal Association represents 5.5 million American wheelchair users. United Spinal Association CEO Vincenzo Piscopo said “This partnership demonstrates that accessible travel is a reality, and every step forward brings us closer to a more inclusive travel experience for the disability community. I hope to see continued improvements not only from United Airlines but also throughout the entire travel industry.” The Runway Girl Network reports that the FAA “is working to define the criteria necessary to allow someone to remain in their personal wheelchair during flight using a tie-down similar to what's used in the automotive industry, and as the US Department of Transportation prepares to initiate rulemaking in that regard.” Boeing's CEO Is Shrinking the Jet Maker to Stop Its Crisis From Spiraling With all its troubles and difficult financial position, some Industry insiders and analysts are thinking about a possible Boeing breakup or even bankruptcy. In a note to employees, new CEO Kelly Ortberg said Boeing has spread itself too thin: “We need to be clear-eyed about the work we face. We also need to focus our resources on performing and innovating in the areas that are core to who we are.” Boeing is exploring asset sales and pruning non-core or underperforming units. Boeing machinists to vote on new proposal with 35% raises that could end strike The new proposal includes 35% in wage increases over four years, a $7,000 signing bonus, increased 401(k) contributions, and guaranteed minimum annual bonus payouts. Texas legislators held a daylong hearing Wednesday examining the evidence and hearing expert testimony in the case of Robert Roberson, the East Texas man who could become the first in the country to be put to death for the disputed “shaken baby syndrome” theory. In other news, the town of Fairview has created a Zoning Defense Fund for legal costs in anticipation of a lawsuit from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over the town's denial of a controversial proposed temple; a federal jury in Fort Worth awarded American Airlines $9.4 million on Tuesday in the airline's suit against Skiplagged, a website that promotes bargain fares through “hidden city” ticketing, a practice that saves many fliers money but, American contends, costs airlines millions in uncaptured revenue; and Mark Cuban says he feels bad for Jerry Jones, after Jones' meltdown in a radio interview earlier this week. The Cowboys owner took a defensive tone during his weekly radio hit with “Shan & RJ” on 105.3 The Fan, drumming up the buzz around his team after a 47-9 loss to Detroit. Episode Notes A new report said JetBlue Airways is planning to raise airfares on routes flown by Spirit Airlines by as much as 40% if the two carriers' proposed merger is approved, reports Edward Russell, editor of Skift publication Airline Weekly. JetBlue would increase fares between 24% and 40%, according to a report by legal news service Law360. The report cited documents released as part of a lawsuit brought by travelers looking to block the JetBlue-Spirit deal. The travelers suing JetBlue argued that the proposed merger would reduce competition for consumers. Russell notes their lawsuit is separate from the U.S. Department of Justice's suit to stop the merger. JetBlue said in a statement that, without context, the information gave a “completely inaccurate picture of the facts” and that the proposed merger would result in low fares and better service. Russell adds that while airfares rose substantially last year, the average domestic airfare has dropped below pre-Covid levels. Next, travelers flying Qantas to the U.S. have historically arrived in Los Angeles to connect to other cities across the country. But the Australian carrier is looking to serve U.S. and Asian cities with a new plane order, reports Russell. Russell writes the airline has ordered 24 new long-range planes for both the U.S. and Asia that will see it add more nonstop flights to both regions. That means Qantas' future will see more flying to Chicago and Seattle than Los Angeles. Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said on Thursday the new aircraft will enable the carrier to have more direct flights into the U.S. Finally, American Airlines has filed a federal lawsuit against hidden city flight platform Skiplagged, reports Executive Editor Dennis Schaal. Schaal writes that American alleges that Skiplagged sells flights without authorization and misleads flyers with deceptive offers, among other practices. Skiplagged is famous for offering hidden city flights, where passengers seeking a bargain ditch the rest of their journey at a layover. Schaal notes that airlines prohibit hidden city ticketing because of operational hassles and lost revenue. American is the latest major travel brand to sue Skiplagged, following Orbitz, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines. Skiplagged founder Aktarer Zaman told Skift he is fighting to protect consumer rights to find favorable airfares.

How To Get Cheap Flights : Episode 007 Subscribe to our MONTHLY newsletter to get a FREE download about How To Get Cheap Flights in an easy to use cheat sheet. Subscribe HERE - it's FREE! I don't spam you or sell your info - promise! ***Research Online Incognito*** Super important!!! Always surf the web incognito when shopping so vendors don’t raise the price to you next time you visit. Going dark means your cookies are reset each time you open a private window. Cookies are used to track your browsing behavior online and often companies will raise the price as they see you continue to show interest in a product, in this case a flight. This is the single most important thing to do to get a cheap flight ticket! To go ‘dark’ and research in “Private Mode”, do the following depending on your browser (The web address bar will actually turn black so you know you’ve done it correctly): Command on Mac or Control on PC = C Google Chrome or Safari: C+ Shift + N Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer: C + Shift + P Alternately, on top menu bar, click “File” > “New Incognito window” (or) “Private Browsing Window” Do General Basic Research with Flight Aggregators Aggregators scour the web for available flights so can help you score a cheap airfare. Different aggregators allow you some flexibility in checking to see when the best time is to fly to your destination. Many allow a matrix so you can see prices over the entire month to determine the best “Days of the Week” to travel to your destination and also the best time of the month to travel. Make notes on what is a low cost flight, the best days of the week to get there and the best time of the month. These aggregators make it super easy to compare flight prices! Kiwi Google Flights Kayak SkyScanner Secret Flying Airfare Watchdog Google: The Airport you want to go to + Wiki: Click on the link and make note of other area airports: Example “Paris airport wiki”. Charles De Gaulle (CDG) appears. You also see that “Orly” is a regional airport, where you might get a budget airline flight to. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page to see which airlines service this airport and LOOK FOR BUDGET AIRLINES that may not appear on the aggregator sites (example: Southwest Air). This will give you an idea of popular routes, which are more competitive and therefore most likely to offer the lowest airfare. Make notes of the best airports to fly into your destination and the budget airlines that service it (also check any regional airports the same way). Determine YOUR “Best” Airports: After poking around the aggregator sites, using all of the flexibility functions, determine your best airports to concentrate on: Best Regional Airport: What are the biggest airports near me that I can get to in a few hours? For me it would be Raleigh or Charlotte. Look at the budget airlines on the Airport wiki for the airport near you to see what major airport you can get to cheaply to determine your Best Major Airport for your upcoming destination. Best Major City Airport: is there a budget airline that services it from an airport near you going in the direction you want to head? For me, it would be Boston, NY and DC (even though I live in NC) if I want to get across the Atlantic, or Fort Lauderdale if I want to go to Central or South America. Your Regional Airport: It never hurts to check the price of your small local airport. There is a chance that once you discount the aggravation, drive time to a major airport and the accompanying costs of parking, possible hotel and meals if you have to go a day early, etc. that the extra expense would be worth it). I can only get to Atlanta or Charlotte from my local airport. Discount Airlines Caveat: You need to consider the TOTAL cost of your trip (and add in aggravation and time if the airport is a LONG way from where you need to go (use the free Rome2Rio app to help determine time and cost). Sometimes budget airlines airports are NOT the airport you think you are going to, so CHECK before you buy (I once bought a ticket that lured me in, thinking I was flying out of DC, but it turns out is was Baltimore, which meant a train and more time)! Read the FINE PRINT on discount airline tickets: You will often get charged extra for: Baggage - Food & Drink - Printing Tickets - Etc Baggage is especially tricky. Some allow ONE item in carryon meaning your purse, for example must fit in your carryon. They also weigh and measure and are strict! BUY any baggage allowances online before you get to the airport or they will really charge heavily for it when you get there. Best Times to Buy a Ticket: Domestic: I choose about 2 months. Rule of thumb is 1- 3 months ahead of time International: I choose about 3 months. Rule of thumb is 2 - 8 months. Exceptions: If you are travelling for a busy holiday, there will be little discounting (although sometimes you can travel cheaply if you fly on the actual holiday, like Christmas). You usually need to book these tickets really far in advance to make sure you can get a ticket. If you have total flexibility in your travel dates, you can sometimes score a really cheap last minute ticket, but this is becoming less common as the airlines are getting better at predicting need (when’s the last time you were on an empty flight?). Set up Price Alerts: Each of the aggregators will encourage you, usually through a pop up window, to sign up for airfare alerts. When you have plenty of time to buy (see guidelines above), set up alerts for your best airports determined above. I also set up a general alert for my main local airport (RDU) so I can scan deals when I’m not even in the market. Sign Up for the Secret Flying Newsletter With Secret Flying you will get a daily digest of great deals from everywhere, so when you see a great deal from your Best Airport research, you can pounce. It also lists error fares (when an airline accidentally posts a boo boo, like $177 instead of $777), and if you are lucky, you can snag a super cheap ticket until the airline corrects the error. Consider “Flipping” Your Trip and Find the Flight Deal Before You Book Your Adventure Use the map feature on the aggregators to look for deals. Sign up for daily Secret Flying email to get news of new deals and error fares (when a price error is ridiculously low - the airline will honor until they correct the boo boo). First fInd a great airfare, then head to the Active Travel Adventures website and use the search bar to find a cool adventure. Search by: Activity - Time of Year - Budget - Who the trip is best for - Location - Accommodations Example: France + October Cross the Ocean Cheaply Look for a cheap flight to get across the ocean from your country. You can usually get to the connecting airline using a budget airline. Example: You want to go to Madrid but you see a great deal from Boston to Paris using the map feature of an aggregator. You buy a cheap flight to Boston and a cheap flight to Paris (or using the Rome2Rio app see whether flying, bus or train is the best option for you). Buying Your Own Connecting Flights You can save a lot of money by purchasing your own connecting flights. But BE CAREFUL! If you don’t buy your tickets at the same time, then YOU are responsible if you miss your connection, even if through no fault of your own. Options if you miss your connection and you booked the flights directly: Book all at once through Kiwi and they will be responsible. Your Travel Insurance Policy may cover the extra cost of a new ticket Make a mini vacation at the stopover and get there a day or two early WARNING! Let’s say you want to go to Minneapolis and you find a great deal on a flight to NYC that connects via Minneapolis. Airlines consider this a no no if you book the round trip ticket and then get off the plane in Minneapolis. They will usually cancel your return flight and consider you a “No Show” leaving you stranded. They refer to this as “Skiplagged”. What if you want to do a Round Trip flight with different End and Start points? Some tours start and stop in different destinations. You have two choices: Book an “Open Jaw” round trip ticket. This does exactly what you want. Let’s say your tour starts in Bangkok, but you end in Laos. You can buy an open jaw round trip ticket that allows you to do this without returning to Bangkok. However, consider this option: Check the Rome2Rio app to see what your options are to go from your tour end point back to Bangkok. There is often an inexpensive puddle jumper or train that can save you a lot over the Open Jaw ticket. Great FREE! Travel Apps: Download these apps to get super easy and helpful recommendations on how to get from one place to the other. My favorite is Rome2Rio as it covers the world. Omio is great for Europe, too. These apps break down your travel options, from walking, bus, train, plane and taxi or shared ride. You can see the general price range and time it’ll take. You can even directly book bus, plane and train tickets directly through the app! And it’s in English, so no need to decifor foreign schedules! Using these FREE tech tools makes it super easy to get a cheap airfare without spending a whole lot of time! Once you do a bit of preliminary research, you let the alerts passively keep you aware of flight price trends and deals, so you’ll know when it’s time to pounce and buy a cheap plane ticket. Rome2Rio app Omio app (formerly GoEuro) Use Credit Card Promotions: I hate to even mention this, but it IS an easy way to score cheap flight tickets. Please do not use unless you can pay off your balance EACH month and have great credit. No good deal is worth going into debt for! Credit Card companies are anxious for your business, figuring once you get used to them, you’ll stick around for them to make more money off of you. To encourage you to sign up for their card, many offer Bonus Loyalty Points you can use towards travel. For example, the Chase Sapphire card is at the time of this writing, offering 60,000 miles if you get a new card (for $95/year) and spend $4000 in the first three months. Those points are the equivalent of about $750 in travel. If you don’t want to pay the annual fee after the first year, you need to make a note of the anniversary so you can cancel the card before it renews! Travel Hackers have encouraged this ‘join and dump’ program and the card companies are starting to decline those that do so. Therefore I believe we are at the tail end of this deal. Nonetheless, I have used it with much success (except for the one time I forgot to cancel one in time with a $195 fee - ouch!) and have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles. I get a new card when I know I’ve got a big expense coming up (like insurance for my rentals) so I can meet the minimum purchase requirement with no problem. Cheap international flights (and cheap domestic flights for that matter) can be relatively pain free if you use these cheap flight booking tips. Let me know how you make out! The guys kick off the week by discussing how an entrepreneur got sued by United and Orbitz for exploiting the hidden city fees in airline tickets. Full Podcast Transcript NASIR: Welcome to our podcast where we cover business legal news and that’s it. We no longer answer your questions. Actually, we do. You can send in your questions and ideas at ask@legallysoundsmartbusiness.com. We are changing our format a little bit and – oh, yeah – my name is Nasir Pasha. MATT: And I’m Matt Staub. NASIR: Yeah. So, we are changing our format. We’re getting rid of some of the questions, at least not in every episode. MATT: Yeah, it turns out we answered pretty much every legal question there is. There’s only 136 legal questions – well, more than that because some of those first episodes, I think, had three questions per episode. NASIR: Yeah, exactly. So, we pretty much exhausted that. No, but we just want to focus in on some of these legal issues. I feel like we don’t have enough time to cover some of these topics and so we’re going to just stick to one topic per episode so, that way, we can talk about it fully. Please send us your ideas and continue to send us your questions because we will be covering them, but we’re going to be consolidating into one episode and one topic. MATT: Yeah. So, like the times we get off-track or I get us off-track talking about random things that have nothing to do with the story we’re talking about, now we can afford to do that and still cover the legal side of it. So, everybody wins! NASIR: Exactly. MATT: If you’re tuning in to listen to your legal analysis or my relation to analogies to TV shows or movies then… NASIR: Yeah, exactly. We can talk about The Office more. We can talk about the sauce versus crust debate a little bit more in detail. We have more time. MATT: Speaking of which, I’m going to tell a personal story for our story today because we’re dealing with a lawsuit involving United and Orbitz. So, typically, if I’m looking for flight – unless it’s local – like, in the States then I just pretty much go to Southwest. But, if I’m looking for something outside of the state, I’ll usually go to Orbitz first and see what all the options are and then end up going to the actual airline’s website once I find the flight that works. And so, that’s pertinent to this because there’s this new kid – and he is a kid, he’s 22 years old – that started this site. NASIR: They call it a kid in the media, though. MATT: Skiplagged is the name of it. But, basically, I guess I should tell a little backstory on this. I didn’t even know this existed, this hidden fees thing. So, if I was trying to fly to Denver, sometimes it would be cheaper for me to book San Diego to Denver to another city than it would just to be San Diego to Denver which seems crazy but that’s apparently how it works. So, this guy’s website… NASIR: It seems crazy but it’s true. MATT: Yeah. NASIR: Believe it or not. MATT: So, this guy’s site essentially will produce those, show you those flights that exist and then, I guess, get you out of these hidden fees. So, obviously, Orbitz which is, I assume, the biggest online flight searching tool on the internet. I’m assuming it has a pretty sizable chunk of the market. NASIR: Yeah, Orbitz I think is huge. I think they even bought out Hotwire a while ago and Travelocity is probably their competitor and I think KAYAK, I think they actually used Orbitz in part of their search engine and so forth. So, I think all these guys are pretty big, but Orbitz is definitely a huge one and United, of course, is definitely one of the biggest airlines. MATT: Yeah, and that’s who’s suing him – it’s Orbitz and United. So, we’ve got two heavy-hitters going after this 22-year-old kid who apparently doesn’t even have a company which is unfortunate for him. NASIR: Yeah. Well, if you look at the actual lawsuit, he has been sued personally even though he’s operating Skiplagged,
