In my experience, there are three major influences on culture:Individual team members – Do they work together? Do they feel their voice is heard? Do they enjoy going to work every day?Supervision / management – Do they have an open door policy? Do they listen to employees? Are they willing to take acceptable risks with new ideas?Corporate – Are they driven by only the bottom line? Do they provide too much oversight?Easy efforts to improve the culture positively include ensuring that corporate, plant, department goals are clear, posted and understood, that communication occurs frequently at all levels, and that appropriate personnel are involved at the right level for decision making.Speaker:Lee McClish – Director, Maintenance and Reliability for NTT GDC AmericasLee is currently the Director, Maintenance and Reliability for NTT GDC Americas, a global telecommunications and data center company. Life's Tough Media is pleased to announce the latest episode of our “Life's Tough: Explorers are TOUGHER!” podcast series. Hosted by Richard Wiese—explorer extraordinaire and President of The Explorers Club—this episode features Captain Alfred McLaren, former President of The Explorers Club, President of The American Polar Society, Senior Pilot of the Super Aviator submersible, author, deep-sea explorer and a veteran of more than 20 Cold War missions. Captain McLaren is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Naval War College. He holds master's degrees from George Washington University and Cambridge (Peterhouse) University, and after retiring from the Navy in 1981, he received his doctorate from the University of Colorado. He is also a highly decorated submarine captain; his awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the nation's highest peacetime award, two Legions of Merit and four Navy Unit Citations. North Pole Expedition Captain McLaren has completed three successful missions to the Arctic—and the first submerged transit of the Northwest Passage aboard the USS Seadragon. This mission resulted in the first baseball game ever played on the North Pole. Aboard the USS Queenfish, his following missions were a Baffin Bay cruise and an expedition to the North Pole, with the primary intention of this mission being the first-ever exploration and collection of hydrographic, oceanographic and sea-ice data. En route, Captain McLaren and his crew examined the underside of icebergs, navigated the unpredictability of deep-draft sea ice, mapped the plains, crags and fissures of the seabeds and successfully completed the first, and only, underwater survey of the entire Siberian Continental Shelf. As a deep-sea explorer and scientist, Captain McLaren has completed dives to explore historic wrecks, participating in “The First Manned Dives to the German battleship Bismarck,” at an incredible depth of 4,750 meters beneath the sea; and to the wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic and the Rainbow Hydrothermal Vents near the Azores, working with the Russians, using Russian deep-diving MIR submersibles to get a closer look at what's left of this once magnificent vessel. Author and Speaker Captain McLaren is the author of three books detailing some of his incredible missions during the Cold War and his discoveries under the icy seas, with a fourth coming this summer sharing in more detail his deep dives exploring historic shipwrecks. His book, Unknown Waters (University of Alabama Press, 2008), was judged a “Notable Naval Book of 2008” by the U.S. Naval Institute. As a research scientist in climate change in the Polar Regions, he has also written over 50 peer-reviewed research papers and is a National Geographic Global Perspectives lecturer. “Retirement isn't in my vocabulary. There's still too much I want to achieve. I am still thoroughly enjoying the rich smorgasbord of life,” says 84-year-old Captain McLaren. Join Richard and Captain McLaren for exciting tales of life and exploration aboard a nuclear attack submarine and what the “cat and mouse” games during the Cold War were really like.
Rob Forsyth joined the Royal Navy in 1961. By March 1962 as a young officer, he joined HMS Auriga a 1945 vintage diesel submarine. Within 7 months the 22-year-old was loading live torpedoes and preparing for a war mission during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Robs tell of many fascinating incidents in his career including under-ice operations and an incident where Rob's captain made an error that almost resulted in the total loss of submarine and crew.He also details what it was like to take the Submarine Commanding Officers’ Qualifying Course aka “The Perisher”. This six-month course is a prerequisite for the command of a submarine. Failure means your submarine career “perishes”.I could really use your support to help me to continue to produce these podcasts. The J in JPME stands for joint. In order to qualify for joint accreditation each senior service college and the National Defense University are mandated by CJCS instruction to include a proportional number of students and faculty from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Each year hundreds of senior officers attend the college of another service and they find themselves confronted with a whole new world of traditions, culture, acronyms and terms. A BETTER PEACE welcomes Henry Wicks, a member of the Navy element and graduate of the AY20 Resident class at the U.S. Army War College. Henry joins podcast editor Ron Granieri as they discuss what it's like to be a representative of the U.S. Navy and naval warfare to the School of Strategic Landpower. Henry explains the differences he expected to find in Carlisle along with the vast number of things that are very much the same regardless of uniform or service component. So, it's actually been kind of nice to be at Carlisle because for the first time in many years I actually have a chance to see mountains, don't tend to be a lot of mountains right next to the ocean where the Navy has submarine bases. Henry Wicks is a Commander and Submarine Officer in the U.S. Navy. He is a graduate of the AY20 Resident Class of the U.S. Army War College and has entered the prospective commanding officer pipeline to be the Commanding Officer (Gold Crew) of the U.S.S. In Episode 7, we welcome Derek von Disterlo to the show. Derek is a Lieutenant in the United States Navy and primarily serves as a Submarine Officer. In a year, Derek will return to duty in the fleet, but until then he’s serving as an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at the University of Memphis. In this episode, Derek tells us about his upbringing and how his experiences in boot camp and college helped for his worldview.Disclaimer: Derek and I spoke for nearly three hours about his own story and the military’s approach to learning. Although nothing confidential or controversial is shared, it’s important for listeners to understand that Derek’s opinions are his alone, and not those of the United States Navy.

It was the type of work that left no doubt it directly contributed to the balance of power across the world and the sustainment of personal freedoms across the globe. But as with any intense calling or career, two decades in the Navy and many deployments had stressed things at home and delayed other important pursuits. In 2011 Gary began a process of replacing his traditional earned income with passive cash flow by purchasing income producing real estate properties. Today, Gary is a wealth strategist, professional speaker and real estate investor. He first learned about the Perpetual Wealth Strategy and Wealth Maximization Accounts (WMAs), then more commonly known as the Infinite Banking Concept (IBC), while purchasing his first income property in 2011. Utilizing Paradigm Life’s education process, Gary established a WMA to fund this first investment and has repeated the process as he works to continue building passive income sources. This journey had a huge impact on Gary’s understanding of what personal financial security and success are and how best to achieve them – he recognized how far he and most Americans had moved away from sound financial principles that emphasize building a strong foundation focusing on safety and security, and pursuing dependable, consistent growth of their assets. Wall Street convinced families to hand over their hard earned dollars and all control, to hold on through frequent, turbulent market swings and exorbitant fees – it hasn’t worked for most Americans, and it won’t work. Gary joined Patrick Donohoe at Paradigm Life to help educate others and reverse this trend. Originally from a dairy farm in rural Southern Illinois, Gary now lives with his wife, Sue, and their two sons on the central New Jersey coast. Gary Pinkerton is a wealth strategist, professional speaker, author, and real estate investor. He first learned about the Perpetual Wealth Strategy and Wealth Maximization Accounts (WMAs), then more commonly known as the Infinite Banking Concept (IBC), while purchasing his first income property in 2011. He is also the host of the Heroic Investing Show Podcast. Gary Pinkerton – Seeds of Entrepreneurship Gary earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1991 and a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1993. He spent 26 years serving as a Submarine Officer in the U.S. Navy, including commanding the nuclear attack submarine USS TUCSON from 2009-2011 and retiring as a Captain. He grew up in the Midwest in southern Illinois on a dairy farm in the late 80’s. His family lost their farm and it taught him that he didn’t know much about finance. Gary and his father started many businesses where he learned the value of entrepreneurship and getting paid for adding money in the world. In addition, he came from a poor background yet excelled at the Naval Academy. He was conflicted during his military stint but was always inspired by entrepreneurship. In the end, serving in the military was an excellent decision. “The seeds were always there and what lead me to find the financial industry, what lead me to be an entrepreneur and run my own businesses.” – Gary Pinkerton Self-reflection and Family Gary’s transition initially focused on family and income replacement. Therefore it required self-reflection and business that makes him truly happy. He wanted the ability to make changes and see the results. His military background instilled a hard work ethic. Gary wanted to help people prosper. Therefore this lead him to learn more about the technical side of entrepreneurship. “Each job kind of creates your opportunities for the next one.” – Gary Pinkerton Freedom of Time and Wealth Gary wanted passive income to replace his earned income. Our most popular podcasts have been about interview preparation, and we’ve done quite a few related to frequently asked interview questions. We wanted to dedicate a similar show to focus on frequently asked interview questions for technical and engineering roles. Our guest for this show is Shane Bishop, a Senior Account Executive at Orion. Shane is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and is a former Submarine Officer. His impressive military background, as well as his many years of experience with interview preparation, make him an expert on this topic. Shane gives insight on how to answer the following interview questions: • Why are you interested in an Engineering role? • What Technical / Engineering experience do you have? • How did you apply your technical skill set in your last position? • What special technical qualifications do you possess?
Nick Edwards is the founder and CEO of GradientOne, Inc. He also spent five years as a Submarine Officer on Los Angeles Class fast attack submarines. His insights around leadership are sharp and invaluable. He graduated with a BS in Control Systems Engineering from the US Naval Academy and holds an MBA from Harvard Business school, where he and Diego first met.
