Author Mark Mustian discusses his new Southern Gothic novel, Boy with Wings. In this work of historical fiction, a boy named Johnny Cruel is born with wing-like appendages on his back. Is he a miracle, or is he cursed? Johnny ends up in a freak show traveling through the South in the 1930's. While he bares his back for the entertainment of onlookers, he finds that the very thing that shocks people also gives him power. Mark had long wanted to write a book about “odd people,” and he knew he finally had something special when he struck upon the idea of Johnny Cruel, the boy with wings. In this story, Mark delves into the idea of what it's like to be different, as well as issues of race and religion in the South during the 1930s.

Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - Episode 337, The First Gothic NovelI'd like to begin this podcast episode with an excerpt from the opening chapter of The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole - an excerpt which captures the dramatic and supernatural tone of the novel. This passage describes the event that sets the story in motion: the mysterious death of Conrad, Manfred's son, on his wedding day."Manfred, Prince of Otranto, had one son and one daughter: the latter, a most beautiful virgin, aged eighteen, was called Matilda. Conrad, the son, was three years younger, a homely youth, sickly, and of no promising disposition; yet he was the darling of his father, who never showed any symptoms of affection to Matilda. Manfred had contracted a marriage for his son with the Marquis of Vicenza's daughter, Isabella; and she had already been delivered by her guardians into the hands of Manfred, that he might celebrate the wedding as soon as Conrad's infirm state of health would permit.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

This week, our podcast host Charuka Arora has a heart-to-heart with Shelby Nicole McFadden, who has just published her first book Grove Hollow series. From an artist to a graphic designer to a business owner, Shelby wears many hats. Now, she is proudly embracing her new role as a writer, which according to her, has always been a dream of hers. Shelby has always been quite imaginative, and she has used it to her advantage while writing her very first book, Grove Hollow Hollow Metamorphosis. This book is the first of a four-part series, and Shelby cannot wait to start on her second book! Throughout her journey of transitioning into a writer, Shelby has had her doubts and fears. Even after she has written her first book, she is overcome with her imposter syndrome at times. However, she has never let those doubts get the better of her, and has strived to manage both the writing and marketing aspects on her own. Shelby hopes to see her book adapted into a series or a movie one day, and her ambitions should be aspiring to all the artists and creatives out there. As a working mom with 2 kids, Shelby McFadden's writing schedule depends on her kids' schedule, and all mothers will agree that it's not an easy business. Despite having to jump through these extra hoops, Shelby has not let anything get in the way of expressing her creativity through her words and visuals. For her, the work matters not because of its monetary value, but because she simply wants to share with the world what she has created. That may be the secret ingredient to Shelby's triumphs, as she knows there is only one way forward and that is onwards and upwards! Shelby describes her first book as “an enthralling gothic paranormal journey” that is loaded with “intricate narratives, mysterious plotlines, and fantastical elements”.  The story takes place in a town called Grove Hollow, where our main character, Jade, moves in with her great aunt. Things begin to unravel as she uncovers mysterious secrets about her family lineage. As she works to come to terms with the crazy history of her family, she comes across a cursed locket that that turns her life upside down! The Global Novel: a literature podcast

Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus is an 1818 novel written by English author Mary Shelley. It recounts the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature through an unorthodox scientific experiment. Though Frankenstein is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement, some scholars have argued for it as the first true science-fiction story. The novel has had a considerable influence on literature and on popular culture, spawning a complete genre of horror stories, films, and plays. Since the publication of the novel, the name "Frankenstein" has often been used, erroneously, to refer to the monster, rather than to his creator. With me today is Dr. Glynis Ridley, Professor of English at the University of Louisville. Glynis received her Ph.D. from Trinity College, Oxford. She is best known as the author of Clara's Grand Tour: Travels with a Rhinoceros in Eighteenth-Century Europe, which was winner of the Institute of Historical Research Prize.Recommended Reading:Mary Shelley, Frankenstein (1818), ed. After much recent politickin' and metaphor – we're back with a good old-fashioned, honest-to-goodness ghost story. And from a friend, no less.V. L. Valentine came on the show last year (ep.31) to talk about her debut medical horror whodunnit, The Plague Letters. Now she's back with her sophomore novel, a ripe Gothic treat called Begars Abbey. It plays with the tropes beautifully. There are secret rooms, sinister histories, mad old relatives, torture, crypts, sinister servants and lots of ghosts. Why the shift, from surgeons to spooks, you may ask.Well, Vikki and I talk about that. As well as what she learned between book 1 and 2, the elements of pacing, writing problematic women in the age of twitter, the macabre history of old dungeons and the perilous evils of Downton Abbey (ok – that last one is more my soapbox). Also, Vikki takes me to task about not yet finishing my own novel. Consider me chastened and now writing!Enjoy! Begars Abbey is published on April 26th, by Viper.Support Talking Scared on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/TalkingScaredPodCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, and TikTok or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Download Novellic on Google Play or Apple Store.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/talkingscaredpod)

Is it cold where you are? If so, do I have the book for you.Our guest is Ally Wilkes, whose debut novel, All the White Spaces was my pick for the most anticipated horror novel of early 2022. I was NOT disappointed. The book takes us to Antarctica in 1919, just months after the end of the First World War, in the dying years of the Heroic Age of Exploration. There, trapped in the frozen ‘overwinter' the team of men are forced to confront a malignant presence that draws them out into the cold.Did that give you a shiver? The good kind? Yes!Ally's book is the springboard for a great conversation about exploration and hauntings. We debate over what the thing in the darkness is. Is it a ghost, a god, an evil sense of anti-human geography? But beyond that we also get into all kinds of meaty, chewy topics, such as how her novel unpicks and deconstructs the long-celebrated ideas of masculinity, heroism, nationhood and empire. Yet, despite all that, the Daily Mail still gave it a good review. It's THAT good a book. Enjoy!!All the White Spaces is released in the UK on January 25th by Titan Books, and on Mach 22nd by Atria in North America. Other books mentioned in this episode include: Tell Me I'm Worthless (2021), by Alison RumfittDead Silence (2021), by S. Wie viele Geister besuchen Ebenezer Scrooge genau und was wollen die eigentlich von ihm?

This week, Elle and Catrina read two Northanger Abbey adaptations. While each book is part of a collection of adaptations that we have read before. One is Northanger Abbey through the eyes of Henry Tilney. The other is a modern take - do modern, Catherine might be a Twilight girl. Elle reviews Henry Tilney's Diary by Amanda Grange. This is the third book by Amanda Grange Elle has read for the podcast and, like the others, it doesn't disappoint.  If you love Henry Tilney, then this book will have you falling in love even more. What's more, we finally get to see the end of the book play out in real-time.Catrina got to re-read the modern adaptation called Northanger Abbey by Val McDermid. This modern adaptation is part of the Jane Austen project that brought us Eligible and Emma. What makes this modern adaptation unique is that this version of Catherine is very relatable to anyone who was into supernatural books in the early 20-teens. Oh, and General Tilney might be a vampire...Wit Beyond Measure is part of the Frolic Podcast Network. You can find more outstanding podcasts to subscribe to atFrolic.media/podcasts

How did this film compare to the book? What was changed? What stayed true to the story? How did this adaptation compare to other films? With a few deviations from the book, this adaptation actually improves upon the original story. Catherine indulges in a few book fantasies. Weather this hot demands the cool balm of a book, and do I have one for you.The Book of Accidents is the latest horror-epic from Chuck Wendig – the seeming literary successor to King, Straub, McCammon and Barker. Wendig's books take you in their embrace and say “you're mine now” or maybe “we all float down here.” Here, in this case, being a mineshaft in the rural vacancy of Pennsylvania. There is plenty of hype around The Book of Accidents and I'm delighted to say it's all earned. This is quite simply the kind of big, bombastic storytelling you don't get much of anymore, a steak-and-lobster-with-ice-cream for after sort of novel that fills you up and leaves you satisfied. The book is so big, and the ideas so grand, that Chuck and I end up forgetting to talk much about the actual story. Instead we discuss what it has to say about society – good and bad – about kindness, and love and the comfort of horror that we all-too often ignore in favour of the viscera. In short, it's a wholesome conversation about a wholesome book, about a very unwholesome scenario. Oh – and Chuck tells us all about the very real haunted house that inspired it. A house he happens to have grown up in.Enjoy! The Book of Accidents was published by Del Rey on 20th July.Other books mentioned in the show include:Blackbirds: Miriam Black #1 (2012), by Chuck WendigWanderers (2018), by Chuck WendigThe Three (2014), by Sarah LotzRoad of Bones (coming 2022), by Christopher GoldenSupport the show on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/TalkingScaredPod Come talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com.Thanks to Adrian Flounders for graphic design.

Welcome to Everything Trying to Kill You, the comedy podcast that talks about horror movies! Join Maegan, Mary Kay, Mary, and their lovely guest, Emily Martin, on their episode about Interview with the Vampire. They answer questions like, who is your vampire soulmate? What makes Anne Rice’s vampire convention so much better than traditional vampire lore? Do you think Anne Rice being an erotic author makes it too obvious that Lestat and Louis are a couple? How does this film utilize Kiss-or-Kill distance? Since Tom Cruise hijacked The Mummy, does he deserve to be kissed anymore? Do vampires consent to becoming vampires? Is life-saving consent implied? Are children innocent? What’s the big deal about making a vampire out of a child? How is this text still Gothic, despite its production in the 1990s? How is Lestat similar to Dr. Frankenstein? What does blood taste like to vampires? What is the nature of Louis and Claudia’s relationship? How old is Claudia actually? How do we feel about the idea that Louis values human life but he owns humans? What exactly does “Creole” mean? Why does Bourbon Street smell like sin? How did the voodoo practiced by Louis’ slaves add to or takeaway from the horror? Was the end of this film SUPER rushed? Does it end in the right place? What’s the difference in watching the Vampire Theater from watching this movie on the screen? What brand of lip gloss does Lestat wear? Who would you re-cast as Lestat?Interview with the Vampire (1994) Written by Anne Rice and directed by Neil Jordan. Starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas. Genre: adventure, thriller, drama, horrorPlot summary: Born as an 18th-century lord, Louis (Brad Pitt) is now a bicentennial vampire, telling his story to an eager biographer (Christian Slater). Suicidal after the death of his family, he meets Lestat (Tom Cruise), a vampire who persuades him to choose immortality over death and become his companion. Eventually, gentle Louis resolves to leave his violent maker, but Lestat guilts him into staying by turning a young girl (Kirsten Dunst) -- whose addition to the "family" breeds even more conflict.Links for your auditory pleasure….Take the Who is Your Favorite Vampire Soulmate Quiz! https://bookriot.com/2018/09/20/vampire-soulmate-quiz/Ilovewerewolves.com Emily Martin’s podcast, Book Squad Goals: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/book-squad-goals/id1230209775?mt=2

The Contingencies of Comparison: Rethinking Comparative Media

Brian Larkin and Stefan Andriopoulos draw on the concept of comparison to examine how the same technologies work in radically different ways across the globe, juxtaposing media practices in Africa, Latin America, and Asia as well as in Western centers. There is an assumption that media, whether print, cinema, or digital media, were developed in the West and later exported to other places which were then in the place of ‘catching up’ with a media history that had already been established. But we know that cinema arrived in Shanghai and Calcutta at the same time as it did in London and evolved in those locations to produce different institutional and aesthetic forms. We also know that currently Seoul is far more ‘wired’ than New York and that Lagos is developing a film industry that is rapidly becoming dominant in all of Africa. It is clear that future media centers will emerge in places far outside their traditional Western centers. Media emerge from a reciprocal exchange between technical forms and cultural religious, political, and economic domains. When these formations shift, features we have seen as core to media, sometimes part of their very ontology, turn out to be contingent rather than necessary. Exploring the concept of comparison opens up new questions for media studies by highlighting the contingencies of media and the specificity of historical and geographical formations. Brian Larkin is Professor of Anthropology at Barnard College, Columbia University. He is the author of Signal and Noise: Media Infrastructure and Urban Culture in Nigeria and writes on issues of media, religion, infrastructure and urban studies in Nigeria. Stefan Andriopoulos is Professor in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. He is the author of Ghostly Apparitions: German Idealism, the Gothic Novel, and Optical Media (Zone Books, 2013), which was named “book of the year” in Times Literary Supplement. His previous book Possessed: Hypnotic Crimes, Corporate Fiction, and the Invention of Cinema won the SLSA Michelle Kendrick award for best academic book on literature, science, and the arts.

The Secret of Magic is a book within a book. It is both the title of Deborah Johnson’s 2015 Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction-winning novel, and (in the world of that novel) a reclusive writer’s scandalous 1920s children’s book, which dared to feature black and white playmates solving mysteries together in a magical forest. The protagonist of The Secret of Magic, Regina Robichard, is a young black lawyer in 1946, working for Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Raised in the north, Regina travels to Mississippi for the first time to investigate the mysterious death of a returning World War II veteran. She discovers that she has been summoned by the reclusive author M. P. Calhoun, a white woman who wrote a single inflammatory book–The Secret of Magic–and has never published again. What Regina uncovers in the small southern town of Revere is a morass of conflicting social and racial ties, in which the real mystery is not who killed the young black soldier–but whether justice of any type will be possible to achieve by legal means. Author Deborah Johnson joined the ABA Journal’s Lee Rawles to discuss the personal experiences which led her to write this book; the historical influences she drew upon; her thoughts on winning the Harper Lee Prize; and her opinion of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman.
