Sauvignon Blanc is one of our very favorite wines because it is rarely ever anything other than good, and a lot of people feel that way as well, but in this episode we put that to the test by seeing if really inexpensive Sauvignon Blancs can be any good. And, we have some news for you people - while you can find some good inexpensive Sauvignon Blancs, there are some cheap ones out there that are just not very good - we're looking at you, Charles Shaw! In this episode, we talk about why Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most reliably good and inexpensive wines out there, and we do a tasting challenge with three that are really easy to find to see if any of them are any good. And - there is a clear winner, and a clear loser in our tasting. Believe it or not, 73% of the wine purchased in the United States is sold for less than $8. So, there are a LOT of people drinking those wines! But they don't often get reviews, and so we thought we would take some time to taste and review some value wines to see just how different they are from slightly more expensive wines. The results: one of the wines was a pleasant surprise and a wine we enjoyed, and one of the wines was probably the worst wine we have ever had on our podcast, and we think it may have burned a hole in our stomachs. But you have to listen to find out which one it was! We explore what makes inexpensive wines so inexpensive and what makes them so popular. This one was really fun to do! Peter recognized an expert he knew in the documentary “Sour Grapes” about high-end wine fraud and wondered how a so-called authority could be so easily duped. Astonished by the enormity of the black-market wine world, Jason and Peter started wondering about the nature of high-end products…are they actually superior? What they found out will definitely surprise you. Really, no really! Realizing that they were incapable of discerning the difference between a thousand-dollar Bordeaux and Trader Joe's Two Buck Chuck, they sought out Maureen Downey, the foremost authority on wine and wine fraud to teach them, and YOU the secrets of actually appreciating fine wine. Known as “The Sherlock Holmes of Wine” and one of the “50 Most Powerful Women in Wine” Maureen specializes in authentication and valuation. She advises the world's top collectors, auction houses, wine merchants, restaurants, and hotels and has advised the FBI and the Department of Justice in several high-profile cases.   IN THIS EPISODE: The amount of international wine fraud is staggering! Ep 341: The Grape Miniseries -- Gamay

Wine for Normal People

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2020 43:36

This week we return to our grape miniseries to cover an old Burgundian variety, one of the 20 kids of Gouais Blanc and Pinot, that emerged around the 1300s. We cover its fascinating history; we talk about how it survived defamation by Dukes, centuries later became one of the most popular wines in the world (Beaujolais Nouveau), fell from grace and now is securing its place as a serious, multifaceted grape that makes complex, interesting wines (especially in its ancestral home of Beaujolais, France).   Here are the show notes: The Gamay grape and its ideal terroir Often called Gamay à Jus Blanc (Gamay with white juice) to distinguish it from 2 teinturiers (grapes with red juice) that mutated from it. The grape is early budding, ripening, and not vigorous if grown on the right soils and in moderate temps. Gamay is predominantly grown in the Beaujolais region, just south of Burgundy. Its highest expression is when it grows on granite soils in the northern area of Beaujolais, in 10 superior communes. These are, listed in order of lightest to heavy: Chiroubles, St. Amour, Fleurie, Régnié, Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Juliénas, Chénas, Morgon, Moulin à Vent Gamay Wines Wines of Gamay are high in acidity, can be light or dark in color, can be rough in tannins or silky (all depends on terroir), have red berry, cherry, blackberry fruit notes, and stronger notes of flowers like violets, roses, and iris. I find they often have a note similar to a graham cracker, and they can show smoke or flint minerals aromas too. The wines often are compared to Pinot Noir but they are brighter, a bit less complex and often show a delicate bitter note, which can be very satisfying with the right food. Winemaking – the problem of carbonic maceration Traditional or better quality Beaujolais, in particular, from the Cru or Beaujolais Villages are made in the traditional way wines are made (the quick and dirty: crush, macerate, ferment, oak age if desired, clean up, bottle) but Beaujolais Nouveau gets much of its flavor from a very quick vinification method that allows producers to take wine off the vines and have it be ready to sit on shelves within a few months’ time. This process is called carbonic maceration and it happens in lieu of crushing and macerating in the traditional way. The quick and dirty on it: Whole bunches of grapes are put sealed vats that are blanketed with carbon dioxide (manual harvesting to ensure grapes aren’t broken during picking is important here) Grapes at the bottom of the vat are crushed by weight of the grapes sitting on to top. The ones at the top aren’t crushed but the ones at the bottom release carbon dioxide That carbon dioxide encourages fermentation within the juice that sits inside the skins of the grapes. But without oxygen and time, quick fermentation occurs and creates flavors like bubble gum and bananas. And that’s what Beaujolais Nouveau usually tastes like!     Most Gamay is grown in France, where it is the 7th most planted red variety Beaujolais: 2/3 of plantings of Gamay are in and around Beaujolais, where it makes up 98% of production 12 appellations have Gamay as the primary grape– the 10 crus plus -- Beaujolais AOC Beaujolais Villages AOC Again, the Cru are: Chiroubles, St. Amour, Fleurie, Régnié, Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Juliénas, Chénas, Morgon, Moulin à Vent Other parts of France: Burgundy: Grown mainly in the Mâconnais, just north of Beaujolais. The grape is used for Crémant de Bourgogne and is sometimes blended with Pinot Noir in a wine called Bourgogne Passetoutgrain Loire: Gamay can be light, peppery, and aromatic when it ripens well. Most of it is grown around the city of Tours in the Cheverny, Coteaux de Vendômois and other nearby AOCs. The wines are vintage dependent and can be thin in bad years. Savoie and the Rhône each have some minor plantings Other areas with Gamay include: Switzerland, where Gamay is mixed with Pinot Noir to create Dôle in Valais (Bourgogne Passetoutgrains in Burgundy) Valle d’Aosta of northern Italy (not too far from Switzerland!) Eastern Europe New Zealand: I mention Te Mata as one I’ve had and loved Australia: Some smaller, cooler areas of Victoria Canada: Niagara Peninsula, Niagara on the Lake The US: Texas, Michigan, New York State (Finger Lakes and Hudson Valley) and… California: I tell the story of the original Charles F. Shaw and his love of Gamay (and how his winery failed and he sold his name to Freddie Franzia to become what is now… Two Buck Chuck). I also add that Valdiguié, a French grape so bad it’s not grown in France anymore, was confused with Gamay Oregon: At the same latitude of Beaujolais, there is lots of potential with the right soils. The grapes here are, in fact, Gamay à Jus Blanc, and they make lovely examples of the grape. For more information on Beaujolais, the Beaujolais appellation web site is wonderful (this is not sponsored, I just love the site!) _________________________________________   Don't forget to sign up for my live online wine classes: www.winefornormalpeople.com/classes  _____________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week: Wine Access  Visit: www.wineaccess.com/normal and for a limited time get $20 off your first order of $50 or more!  Wine Access is a web site that has exclusive wines that overdeliver for the price (of which they have a range). Check out their awesome wine site with fantastic, hard to find wines -- you won't regret it!    Thanks to YOU! The podcast supporters on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/winefornormalpeople

Santa Carolina Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

The Santa Carolina Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vineyards in the Miraflores and Los Lingues estates in the Colchagua Valley in Chile. The Colchagua Valley is located between the Coastal Mountains and the Andes. This is a wine I found at Costco selling for $7.49 a quick check of the internet found it selling online for $9.99 to $12.99. James Suckling who is probably the world's premier wine critic gave the Santa Carolina Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 93 points. That is a very lofty score for a sub ten buck Red wine.Santa Carolina was founded in 1875 and Carolina is Carolina Íñiguez who along with her husband Luis Pereira started the winery. Santa Carolina is one of the oldest and largest wineries in Chile. The winery is listed on the Bronco Wines website (Two Buck Chuck) website, they do not seem to have an ownership claim, maybe they are the US distribution. The Colchagua Valley is an ideal place to grow grapes. It has the warm days and the much cooler nights followed by morning fog that grapevines crave. The earthquake of 2010 basically destroyed the Santa Carolina winery and they were forced to rebuild (completed in 2012). Santa Carolina took the setback to reinvigorate the winery and the full lines of wines. The vineyards are Estate vineyards which means the winery owns and operates them. Santa Carolina owns several estates being an estate winery in this instance is not as exclusive as estate vineyards in upscale wines. But it does indicate that the winery had complete control over the farming and the picking of the grapes.Plus the winery has extensive experience with the grapes year after year. Contracted vineyards can be every bit as skilled in the vineyard as estate, but the wineries do not always have the years of knowledge with those particular grapes This Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented in stainless steel vats then aged "in contact" with French oak for 8 months then bottle aged for an additional 4 months. Being aged in contact with French oak does not necessarily mean oak barrels were used.An expensive Cabernet Sauvignon that was not aged in oak barrels probably would not sell well, but with value-priced Cabs, considerations need to be made. An oak barrel, especially French oak can cost one thousand dollars or more and a wine selling for $7.49 just does not have the production budget to accommodate that expense.Oak flavoring is an expected sensation for Cabernet Sauvignon wine and often techniques other than barrels (such as oak stave added to the tank) are of higher quality than the type of barrels that would fit the budget. So for inexpensive Cabernet Sauvignon if it tastes good, if it is a satisfying experience, then the winemaker did a good job. If barrels were used or not used isn't of the utmost importance. The alcohol content is 13.5%,Santa Carolina Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2018The color is garnet red with black highlights. The nose is red berries and spice, cigar box, grilled meat, lightly herbal, hints of smoke strawberry, and chocolate. This is a very good Cabernet Sauvignon nose for such an inexpensive wine. This is a very well-balanced Cabernet, there are sleek ripe fruit and some interesting rougher sensations. It tastes of raspberry, strawberry, black pepper, and spice. The mid-palate shows orange zest, plum, Nestles chocolate powder, and soft exotic spice. The tannins stay out of the way, it is rare with value-priced wine that the tannins are even worth mentioning. The acidity allows all the flavors and sensations to unfold. The SummaryI like the Santa Carolina Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, it sort of splits the difference between French Cabernet and California. It is sleek and lean but has tasty ripe fruit. This wine is a steal at $7.49 a bottle. It drinks WAY over its price tag.

Finding the apocalyptic visions of the last episode too sobering, Sean and Cody liquor up with some California chardonnay to tackle the first comedy on the Green Screen list. In Bottle Shock, wine academy president Stephen Spurrier (Alan Rickman) tries to shake up the Paris wine scene by pitting the snobby old guard French vintners against the rebellious upstarts of California's Napa Valley in a famous 1976 tasting competition. Can the mostly golden but sometimes poop-brown fluid wrought by the awkward father-son combination of Bill Pullman and Chris Pine, as the beleaguered vintners of Chateau Montelena, stack up against the European heavyweights? Environmental issues explored include the history of viticulture, settler colonialism in old California, and peoples' relationship with the land they live and work.   What really happened in the 1976 “Judgment of Paris” competition? Why did California wine have such a terrible reputation for most of the 20th century? How did a handful of Eastern European refugees from Communist oppression save the California wine business? Who wouldn't be flattered to have Alan Rickman play them in a movie? How do you pronounce “terroir”? What was up with those Orson Welles wine commercials from the early ‘80s? Did Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters play at Woodstock ‘94? How can Chris Pine's wig be even worse than William Shatner's in Star Trek IV? Why were you so much more likely to watch this movie on the back of an airline seat than in a theater? The answers to these questions flow like cheap cabernet from a bottle of Two Buck Chuck in this tasty episode of Green Screen. Dan Berger and Barry Herbst are with Steve Jaxon today on California Wine Country. Steve Jaxon begins by asking Dan Berger about the Wine Glut, the overabundance of wine on the market right now. Dan tells about how wine is like many other agricultural products, there are cycles of scarcity and abundance. In 2009, wine was scarce and prices were high. This year, prices are falling pretty much across the board. Even Trader Joe's has lowered the price of its Charles Shaw "Two-buck Chuck" back to $1.99 after having moved it up to $2.49 for several years. 2020 is Bottle Barn's 30th year in business and later this year there will be lots of celebrations. Steve takes the chance to ask wine expert Dan Berger his opinion of Two Buck Chuck. The answer, is you can't expect it to be the same wine all the time, but there is so much Cabernet Sauvignon that they sometimes do get some good values. Dan describes how Bottle Barn operates in this environment, where they focus on delivering the best value to retail buyers with their selection and prices. Brands that were selling for $30 per bottle are selling for $12.99 today, such as a Pinot Noir that he just opened. The problem is that the supermarkets are usually not as savvy about stocking wine but if you have a smart wine buyer at a supermarket, they can have a very good stock with some great deals. There is also a lot of consolidation happening in the wine industry now. Constellation just sold 30 brands to Gallo. Gallo is a 70 million case company and they just added another 10 million or more. Bottle Barn is still selling a lot of SF Chronicle Competition award winners. The 2019 Rosés are about to come in. They do tastings in-store Fridays and Saturdays. They have a bottle of Enkidu Zinfandel wine that they all enjoy. Dan and Barry agree that red wine blends are dropping in price and many more producers are adding them to their portfolios, since they give great flexibility to create products. Dan notes that between 12% to 15% of the fruit that was grown last year was not made into wine, there was so much. Barry Herbst has noticed that some producers are discounting upon release. This is a good time to be a retail wine buyer, as Dan Berger reminds us that these are excellent wines that simply can't sell at their previously expected prices.

It’s funny/not funny how we give ourselves clues as to what is going on inside with external stuff. A few weeks ago I went to Trader Joe’s and bought those salty mochi snacks that are nearly impossible to stop eating. In addition, I bought granola, yogurt and a bottle of Two Buck Chuck that was three bucks.None of these items necessarily sound bad (unless you’re an oenophile), but none were on my list and none are things that I usually consume. I was shopping for a “feel better”. Unfortunately all of this stuff ultimately makes me feel worse in the end. Not only do I feel shitty after I eat or drink them, I can then beat up on myself because I know better. So when I heard myself asking the stock person where those damned mochi things were, why didn’t I stop then? Why do we have to drag ourselves through the shittiness to try to get to a better feeling? We know the ultimate result.Inevitably, I got to what was underneath. I was feeling anxious and afraid about something that was on the horizon. The headache and feeling bloated from the wine and the mochi snacks didn’t ultimately help.I can see that this stuff doesn’t work any more. Whether it’s food or shopping or anything else that takes me out of center. By now, when I have that thought to pick up the bottle of wine I know it's a flag, a warning, that something is trying to get my attention.I’ve worked with these signals, these triggers, in 12 Step programs for over 25 years. While I have the grace to not be an alcoholic and can stop at one glass, the fact that I “pick up” anything to medicate my feelings whether it’s wine or new shoes, is something I want to observe and have compassion about, rather than feeling more shame.12 Step programs have served me well for more than a quarter century. They’ve provided structure and community that I found no where else. They kept me from going over the edge emotionally and financially many times. They have a very important and essential place in our society especially if one has the gene that creates substance addiction. They save lives. But for me, they never addressed the core wounding. They never touched the truest, most baseline cause of any of my acting out behavior. They never helped me to see that there was nothing wrong with me in the first place.I completely agree that one must be honest about what is going on. But feeling further shamed and punished doesn’t seem to be the quickest way to heal the source of the wound. Love does. And, unfortunately, it’s not something I’ve heard talked about enough in 12 Step. What we’re all trying to do is to feel loved. Deeply loved. Deeply lovable. To get back to the knowing that we are inherently lovable - and always have been. NO MATTER WHAT. Even when we go on the occasional Trader Joe’s spree. Especially when we go on the occasional Trader Joe’s spree. When we know from a place deep inside that we are and always have been lovable, we can safely feel all that we feel. Deeply. One day at a time…

Trader Joe's made popular the Two-Buck Chuck wine. It was cheap and easy, but it certainly wasn't the best. Jesus wanted the best for people, and he offered it even to tax collectors. Pastor Levi Matteson continues with Campfire Stories with Jesus. What did Jesus mean about pouring new wine into old wineskins? Or sewing new fabric on old garments? Whatever he meant, the Pharisees didn't like that Jesus was associating with the typically corrupt bureaucrats. The Scripture passages from Luke 5:27-39. Something was nagging Marina Shifrin. As a freshly minted adult with student loan payments, a barely hospitable New York apartment, a “real” job she hated that paid her enough to get by if she also worked two other jobs, something needed to change. Over a few bottles of Two Buck Chuck, Marina and her friend each made lists of thirty things they’d do before the age of thirty. The first thing on Marina’s list was, “Quit My Shitty Job.” So she did, and just like that the List powered her through her twenties. In 30 Before 30, Marina takes readers through her list and shares personal stories about achieving those goals. Ranging in scope from the simple (Ride A Bike Over the Brooklyn Bridge, Donate Hair) to the life-changing (Move to A Different Country, Become internet Famous), each story shows readers that we don’t all have it figured out, and that’s okay. But for Marina, she did become internet famous (a viral video of her quitting her job after moving to Asia has nearly 19 million views on You Tube) and now writes for Comedy Central’s hit show @Midnight, is also an in-demand stand up, and had a very popular Modern Love column published in the New York Times. None of that would have happened if she didn’t start her list that night. Thank you, Two Buck Chuck.
