Fitness leader, professional triathlete, co-author of Primal Blueprint, Two Meals a Day, and a dozen more best selling books - Brad Kearns - joins the Engearment Podcast to talk about Mark Sisson and his newest book - "Born to Walk". Brad is always wonderful to talk with and learn from. This is his third apperance on the Engearment Podcast for a good reason - he shares wisdom on health and fitness and makes it approachable. This episode is packed with startling facts (did you know the marathon was based on a poem and not actually 26 miles??) approachable training tips (for best performance, aim for a HR of 180 minus your age - this is also known as "fat fax HR") and so much more. It is a real eye opener! You can grab a copy of "Born to Walk" here (Amazon link) or anywhere you purchase your books. https://amzn.to/3WxzEbB It is already a NY Times top 3 book!
Angela talks to health and fitness legend Mark Sisson, a pivotal figure in the ancestral health movement for over two decades. They discuss the critical components of longevity, focussing upon the importance of balance, nutrition, and movement, particularly walking. Mark shares insights from his new book, "Born to Walk," highlighting how walking can be a more effective and sustainable exercise strategy compared to running, especially for those looking to improve their health and energy levels. KEY TAKEAWAYS Walking for Longevity and Health: Walking is a fundamental human activity, supporting balance, digestion, lymphatic health, and mental well-being. Rethinking Running: Running, especially with poor form and cushioned shoes, can be harmful for many people. Walking, complemented by occasional sprints and strength training, is more sustainable. Barefoot Movement: Minimalist shoes or barefoot walking enhances balance, proprioception, and foot health, aligning with the body's natural biomechanics. Diet and Metabolic Flexibility: Centering meals around protein and achieving metabolic flexibility through lower-carb diets supports energy and fat burning. Importance of Collagen: Collagen supports joint health, skin elasticity, and overall recovery, making it a crucial supplement for active individuals. Work Smarter, Not Harder: Prioritizing health, creativity, and energy leads to better performance, even for entrepreneurs balancing busy lives. Two Meals and a Lesson - Mark 6:30-44 (September 24, 2023) by Michael B. Linton
Welcome to another Q&A show! In today's episode, we hear from a listener who wants to know if they can get enough protein to build muscle when eating only two meals a day, talk about fiber and constipation, healing plantar fasciitis, and the ideal effort to rest ratio when sprinting. I also answer questions about my morning exercise routine, timing workouts with your circadian rhythm and what the best time to train is, and what I'm eating these days. Finally, I answer a few questions about cold plunges and advise a high school track and cross-country coach on how to integrate ancestral principles into his coaching method. Thanks for listening and please do continue to send in your thoughtful questions and comments—they are always so insightful and helpful to hear. TIMESTAMPS: Jenny asks: Can you get enough protein when following the Two Meals a Day pattern? [04:00] Recommended Daily Allowance or RDA is recommended for survival, NOT peak performance. A good way of figuring out is to consume a gram of protein per pound of your ideal body weight. [09:08] John asks: How do you minimize fiber and not get constipated? [14:07] Ellen writes how she helped her plantar fasciitis by using Brad's YouTube about stretching. [18:55] Limiting your high intensity sprint efforts to a maximum of 20 seconds, and then taking an extensive recovery is recommended. [20:59] How does one's circadian rhythm affect exercise? The best time to exercise is when you prefer to exercise. [24:47] Mike is asking five questions regarding Brad's morning exercise routine. How does Brad recover after his morning routine and what does Brad eat? [27:25] Brendan is a high school track and cross-country coach. He wants to know how he can integrate the ancestral health principles into his coaching method. [43:25] Douglas wants to know how often and when does Brad do his cold plunge and for how long? Another question is about comparing the diet his doctor recommends and the science behind what Brad talks about. Nutrient deficient, toxic processed foods are the drivers of heart disease, not red meat, dairy and saturated fats. [48:38] Find a health care provider who is well-versed in nutritional science. Some medical schools fall short in offering current information. Paulus van Eeden is a Colonel in the South African Police Service. He was born in Durban ON 11 February 1971, he is 50 years old and grew up in Gauteng where he is currently also residing and working. He enjoys nature and goes camping when there is time to relax in his busy schedule. He is married with two daughters, one is 3RD year at university and the other is in grade 9. During the nineties he was very active and participated in cycling as a sport. He also become a cycling “spinning” instructor. As life continued from 2014 he slowly had fallen into a pattern of eating the wrong food especially treats and fast foods. Gradually he gained weight until he weighed 125 kg due to long working hours in the Law Enforcement environment. In September 2020 he decided to make and change and be healthy before his 50th birthday in February 2021. The birthday went pass and he carried on with his life and bad eating habits. He was also having constant heartburn as a result of being overweight. By that time still weighing 122kg. His blood pressure was high as well as cholesterol levels. He started getting blackouts due to high blood pressure and ended up in hospital. In hospital the final decision was made to take control again of his eating habits. A few weeks later a friend told him about intermitted fasting and he joined the fasting highway Facebook page and started following the 13/11 fasting routine. He has been on the 13/11 fasting plan since April 2021. The journey require discipline every day to make the correct food choices. He was inspired by those who shared their fasting success stories on the Fasting highway as well as other wellness Facebook pages. The main inspiration was to take back control of his health and correct the high blood pressure and cholesterol with weight reduction and not medication. Since he lost weight his blood pressure returned to normal as well as normal cholesterol levels. The constant heart burn is also gone. Energy levels improved. His fasting routine include a small breakfast with oats or similar and a fruit. During fasting only water. Dinner consists of protein, starch and vegetables / salad. Sugar, alcohol and snacks were eliminated from his diet as well as coffee due to high blood pressure. On weekends if there is a social event he adjust the plan to have a bigger breakfast or change breakfast for lunch. He monitors his weight constantly and if he see there is an increase (for example when the family goes on holiday and eat special treats) he goes back to the strict intermitted fasting plan to reduce weight. His weight loss statistics are as follow: SW 125kg CW 93 GW between 92 and 88 Kg Age 50 Height 193 cms News. Back in late 2016, I came across the book Primal Endurance. I read it from cover to cover and realised that the message contained within provided some of the answers I was searching for. How to find a sustainable training, nutrition, and lifestyle routine for my 50's, 60's and beyond. In this episode, we sit down to catch up with our long-time friend and mentor Mark Sisson. It has been 125 episodes since we last had Mark on the show so this was long overdue. Mark has a new book out called Two Meals A Day that can be bought wherever books are sold. Mark Sisson is the New York Times bestselling author of The Keto Reset Diet and founding father of the ancestral health movement. His blog, MarksDailyApple.com, and Primal Blueprint lifestyle program has paved the way for primal enthusiasts to challenge conventional wisdom's diet and exercise principles and take personal responsibility for their health and well-being. From its humble - and controversial - beginnings in 2006, Mark's Daily Apple has grown into one of the highest-ranked health information resources on the Internet, with some three million unique visitors each month. An entrepreneur presiding over a wide-ranging primal enterprise, his fledgling Primal Kitchen healthy condiment line was acquired by Kraft-Heinz in 2018. Mark, 66, has a BA in biology from Williams College and is a former world-class endurance athlete, with a 2:18 marathon and a fourth-place finish in the Hawaii Ironman World Triathlon Championships to his credit. Today, Mark directs his competitive energies into high-stakes Ultimate Frisbee tournaments against competitors decades younger on the battlefields of Miami Beach, FL.
Brad Kearns is a New York Times bestselling author, Guinness World Record-setting professional Speedgolfer, #3 world-ranked Masters age 55-59 track & field high jumper, and former national champion and #3 world-ranked professional triathlete. He has written twenty books on diet, health, peak performance, and ancestral living, and is a popular speaker, retreat host, and face of the Primal Blueprint online multimedia educational courses. In 2017, The Keto Reset Diet became a New York Times bestseller and briefly ranked as the #1 overall bestselling book on amazon.com. Brad hosts the Get Over Yourself podcast, covering healthy living, peak performance, and personal growth with his carefree style and lively sense of humor. Brad promotes a nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle transformation program he calls the “ Mofo Mission,” designed to optimize male hormone function in order to maintain the passion and competitive intensity throughout life. His signature morning regimen is a six-minute plunge into a chest freezer filled with 38F water to build focus, discipline, and a natural hormonal boost. In 2018, Brad broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest single hole of golf ever played (minimum hole length of 500 yards). Playing with a single club (3-wood) and sprinting full speed between shots, Brad played a 503-yard hole in 1 minute, 38 seconds, scoring a birdie four. Brad is a 4-time top-20 finisher in the World Professional Speedgolf Championships. He placed third in the 2017 California Professional Speed-golf Championships, shooting 78 on a championship course in 47 minutes for a Speed-golf score (adding together strokes and minutes) of 125. Brad is an avid high jumper and sprinter. In February 2020, competing in the high jump in the Master's age 55-59 division, he cleared 5'0″ (1.52m), which ranked him #1 in the USA and #3 in the world. His 400-meter time of 1:04.97 ranked him #3 in the USA. In 2016 at age 51, Brad high jumped 5'5″ (1.65m) at a practice session, exceeding the All-American standard. At age 50, he ran a 400-meter time trial in 59.8–running in the 50s in his 50s! During his nine-year career as a triathlete, Kearns was one of the world's top-ranked professionals, amassing 30 wins worldwide on the pro circuit. Career highlights include a remarkable streak of seven victories in a row ('91-'92), a world duathlon series championship, two national triathlon championships, and a #3 world ranking in 1991. Kearns is the last American professional male to place in the top-5 in the ITU World Olympic Distance Championships (1992) and still holds the Hawaii Ironman 24 & under age division American record at 8:57 (1989). After Brad's first appearance in Feb we just had to have him back to talk about his new book with Mark Sisson, ‘Two Meals a Day'. He talks about his strategy to shed fat, reduce inflammation, reverse aging, and break free from diet frustration. Brad discussed how Two Meals A Day is a counter point to the diet wars that leave health enthusiasts confused and often frustrated. Instead of dogma touting plant-based over paleo, or keto over carbs, Two Meals A Day welcomes all healthy eating enthusiasts to a new way of life that helps shed excess body fat, increase energy and focus, minimize disease risk factors, and increase longevity. https://twomealsadaybook.com

B.rad podcast listener Q&A returns with a splash with some great topics to cover. We start with a success story from longtime listener Jon tackling the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim crossing (46 miles, 11k climbing), emphasizing the importance of preparation and enjoying the journey, instead of focusing on the result and bagging bucket list social media photo opps (this can end poorly, like on Mt Everest or in Chinese ultramarathon events). Next we talk about how naps affect circadian rhythm, and how to easily monitor your sleep health by tracking the simple concept of sleep debt (listen to my show with Jeff Kahn for details). Then I dive into a lengthy discussion about the tradeoff between peak athletic performance and longevity, teed up by a question about Robb Wolf's comment: “If you want to live longer, lift more weights and eat more protein.” It's interesting to consider how things like low-carb/ketogenic eating, fasting, high intensity workouts, and being in the higher age groups are all stress factors that must be balanced carefully. Thanks for listening and keep the great questions coming!TIMESTAMPS:Many people try amazing athletic feats but find they aren't as prepared as they thought they were. Preparing is the secret. [01:10]People go to the limit and some don't survive. [10:45]Between midnight and 3:00 AM the most restorative process takes place. [12:08]How does taking a nap affect your circadian rhythm? [13:55]Sleep debt accumulates over time and naps can help “pay off that debt.” [19:53]Dan asks how does Robb Wolf's statement about eating more protein jive with the book, Two Meals a Day? We cannot burn exercise calories to mitigate dietary transgressions. [23:54]Our protein needs increase as we age because we are less efficient at synthesizing those amino acids. [30:56]Could it be that we have an extremely personal distinction when we're trying to strategize our caloric intake and our macro nutrient intake? Time for some interesting Q&A from devoted B.rad podcast listeners. Thanks for the thoughtful questions and comments that make a great contribution to the overall enjoyment, knowledge acquisition, and community spirit with podcast listeners from around the world. We'll cover the logistics and benefits of limiting digestive function to a maximum time window of 12 hours (for example, how caffeinated beverages, herbal tea, and even supplement pills like multivitamins interrupt the fasting process), and how the body works most efficiently (in terms of cell repair, immune function, anti-inflammatory) in a fasted state. We hear from an old-time endurance athlete wondering about how keto aligns with endurance training, and also how to reconcile the enthusiastic voices promoting disparate dietary strategies, from plant based to ancestral. We talk about the validity of the one-mile time trial as an excellent longevity predictor at age 50 (Cooper Institute research), and the rationale and benefits for consuming a maximum nutrient density diet featuring forgotten gems like organ meats—or taking organ supplements if you can't seem to include organs and bone broth in your diet. Send more comments and questions to podcast@bradventures.com!TIMESTAMPS:Raymond has a question about drinking water in that 12-hour fasting window suggested in the book, Two Meals a Day. Give your digestive system a break every day. [02:13]Your eating is tied to your circadian rhythm. You should think about trying to put the evening meal before dark when possible. [04:27]There are studies about “dry fasting” but that is for the extremely advanced. [07:22]Scott asks “Do you really think Keto is the way to go these days?” Brad compares the carnivore diet with the plant-based diet and asks the individual to experiment to decide what is best for them. [09:34]Consuming refined sugars, grains, and industrial seed oils is the biggest problem. [15:50]If you are going to go keto, be sure you get your electrolytes dialed. [18:44]If you under-consume protein, you are going to experience intense cravings for high-protein food. The same goes for carbohydrates. [24:26]Ewan is asking about his urge to run a mile after he has done his sprint workouts. He wants to go for time. [26:37]Ewan also mentions how he is eating liver and feels great. But use caution if you are eating raw liver or egg yolks. Brad talks about eating animal organ supplements. Today's show will highlight some of the most fascinating insights from Two Meals a Day.In this episode, you'll learn why our bodies work most efficiently in a fasted state and why fasting works only when you have eliminated processed foods, escaped carbohydrate dependency, and become adept at burning stored body fat. You'll also find out why when you eat is just as important as what you eat and the “big three” toxic modern food categories that stimulate excess insulin production, inhibit the burning of body fat, and promote carbohydrate dependency. I also bring up the link between insulin resistance and dysfunctional fat metabolism, talk about the importance of emphasizing true ancestral foods, and explain why healthy modern foods like organic high fat dairy products and high cacao percentage dark chocolate are an acceptable part of any healthy diet. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for part 2!TIMESTAMPS:Two Meals a Day is a good way to look at breaking out pattern of unnecessary eating and snacking. [01:22]Snacking is damaging. Fasting is one of the ways to learn to control your diet. [03:16]Ketosis is not about stuffing your face with fat. [05:27]You have to proceed with caution because fasting is only sustainable when you have eliminated carb dependency and industrial seed oils. [07:18]Gluttony and sloth are not the causes of obesity. They are symptoms. [12:44]When you eat is just as important as what you eat. [15:39]Eliminate refined grains, industrial seed oils, sugars and sweetened beverages. These are addictive foods. [16:18]You can eat dark chocolate. [21:58]When you rid your pantry of the grains, sugars, and industrial oils, replace it with ancestral style foods. [25:14]Ancestral foods include meat, fish fowl, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. Here we go with part two of compelling insights from Two Meals a Day.In part one, we discussed how 1) fasting is king, 2) the importance of becoming fat-adapted to receive the full benefits of fasting, 3) why when you eat is just as important as what you eat, 4) why three meals a day is a dated notion and why you must eliminate The Big Three (toxic modern foods such as grains, industrial seed oils, and sugar) from your diet, and finally, 5) the importance of emphasizing ancestral foods. In part two, you'll learn about the origins of the three meals a day structure and why it's no longer relevant or even recommended as a healthy eating pattern. You'll also learn about why your brain and willpower are no match against hyper-palatable foods and how to trust your intuition and honor your natural hunger signal so you can eat intuitively and experience your meals with genuine enjoyment. I also talk about the creation of my Carnivore Scores food chart and why it's optimal to choose the foods in the upper ranking system (aka above the steak line), and explain why there is absolutely no need to worry about getting in enough salads and kale when you're consuming because animal products. Finally, you'll learn how to incorporate (and enjoy!) indulgent moments in a way that doesn't tempt you stray away from your healthy diet, as well as how to match your carb intake with your energy output.TIMESTAMPS:The idea of three meals a day is from the industrial age when our lifestyle was very different. [01:34]After you have cleaned up your act by ditching processed foods and emphasizing ancestral foods, your own intuition can be your guiding force that helps you decide how to eat healthy. [03:01]The animal foods trump even the best plant foods in terms of nutrient density. [06:39]The variation in daily carb intake needs to be aligned with the energy output from exercise. [09:42]Dopamine is released to get us to pursue behaviors that bring rewards. [12:38]Don't have nutrient deficient foods in your house.
