In the ‘point solution versus platform' debate, mark another score for integration as Vida Health jumps into the musculoskeletal (MSK) care space. This is a move we've seen before among the digital health chronic condition management set (remember when Omada acquired Physera, Dario Health acquired Upright, and everyone was waiting to see if Livongo would make a play for Sword or Hinge?) so why is Vida just jumping in now? Dr. Patrick Carroll, Vida Health's Chief Medical Officer, lets us in on the strategy behind the startup's move into the MSK space and what it signals about how employers (and their employees) are starting to view digital health and virtual care within the larger scope of available care options out there. As for Vida's MSK program, it's different than what you might expect. According to Pat, the program is strictly focused on lower back pain and helping members quickly find the physical therapy and, if needed, mental health care that can make a real difference to their overall health in a manner of weeks. If something more complex is discovered, Pat says Vida is working with partners – including those digital-first MSK clinics – to refer out. Is this the long-term play or will Vida eventually build out or buy its way further into MSK? We find out what's ahead for the cardiometabolic care company as it launches yet another new offering to improve access to care. * Jessica DaMassa, the emerging ‘It girl' of health tech interviewing, chats it up with the ‘who's who' of the health tech and healthcare innovation set on 'WTF Health - What's the Future, Health?' FORGET MICRO-NETWORKS: HOW AVANEER HEALTH IS BUILDING THE ONE HEALTH DATA EXCHANGE TO RULE THEM ALL

What BIG thing is Avaneer Health building with its $50 million SEED round backed by not-just-investors-but-also-partners CVS Health, Aetna, Anthem, Cleveland Clinic, HCSC, PNC Bank, Sentara Healthcare and IBM Watson Health? CEO Stuart Hanson stops by to clear-up the mystery that IS Avaneer Health, and how the massive data exchange platform it's building is meant to connect the data coming out of the biggest payers and biggest providers in healthcare, directly and in real-time. Hang on – is this the blockchain-based data exchange healthcare has been talking about for more than a decade?? It sure is trying to be. And what Stuart says is different about Avaneer's effort is, indeed, the fact that it's backed by some of the biggest brands in the business and that they see the business case in being able to more effectively share their data with one another. As he explains it, “this problem of data interoperability and data fluidity is bigger than any competitive business model that they need to worry about…” Stuart is careful to explain what Avaneer IS and what it IS NOT, and this is critical to the company's growth plans and revenue model. Avaneer is NOT a data intermediary; it's not about aggregating data, normalizing it, de-identifying it, or applying any fancy machine learning algorithms to it to deliver “insights” on it. Avaneer is strictly a platform for secure, compliant data exchange, so, for example, Anthem can connect to Cleveland Clinic in real-time and verify insurance coverage. The revenue model is currently built around access to the network and will one-day-soon also take in fees from ‘Solutions Innovators' (aka data-aggregating, algorithm-loving, insights-dropping health tech companies) that will offer their services as add-on's to Avaneer's customers who are plugged into the network. What's ahead for this stealthy start-up as it scales? Could they REALLY be looking to raise a follow-on seed round?? Find out what kind of investors they're looking for and what's ahead on their product roadmap in this in-depth chat. *** Jessica DaMassa, the emerging ‘It girl' of health tech interviewing, chats it up with the ‘who's who' of the health tech and healthcare innovation set on 'WTF Health - What's the Future, Health?' VIDA HEALTH STARTS PRESCRIBING: MEDS, LABS, DEVICES, AND MORE FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND DIABETES

Big news coming out of Vida Health today as the chronic condition care startup announces that it will now be able to prescribe meds, med devices, lab tests, and more to its members. This puts Vida Health among the first of the digital health chronic care companies to evolve its offerings beyond apps-and-coaching, leading on this trend to take digital health chronic care into a more full expression of virtual care. Vida Health's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Patrick Carroll, introduces us to the new offering which he tipped us off about when we met him a few months ago, new to his role at Vida and coming in hot from Hims & Hers where he built similar services as he took that company public as CMO. The new prescribing services will cover both sides of Vida Health's integrated model: mental health and cardiometabolic health, but in different ways. On the mental health side, Pat says members will be able to receive prescription meds for anxiety and depression ONLY at this time; on the cardiometabolic side, members working with Vida Health will NOT be able to get prescription drugs to help with diabetes or heart health, but would instead be able to get continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) prescribed, specialized diets, and labs, like A1C testing, that require a script. Do these prescribing services begin to turn Vida Health into a primary care provider? If not, how do these new prescribing and medication management roles integrate with whatever other primary care offering is in place through a member's plan or employer without adding cost or confusion to the patient experience? We talk through the evolution of both care model and business model as Vida Health adds another layer to its full-stack chronic condition management platform.

But our conversation begins with a much more personal experience of loss that happened at the time Lizzie was studying to be a psychologist.Lizzie's Mom Sylvia sounds like she was a trailblazer! And just as Lizzie was launching her own career, in psychology, Sylvia died while out on her kayak in one of her favorite places to be. That was 2005. Lizzie and her family began grieving this as an accidental death only to discover nearly 4 years later, based on the finally completed autopsy report, that she had died by suicide. While Lizzie doesn't go into details about her death, I appreciated the way she illuminated the unique aspects of grieving this type of death and the added layer of complexity this new information brought forth. Lizzie's warmth and wisdom and insight taught me so much throughout our conversation and I know you're going to learn so much too. Episode ResourcesDr. Lizzie Cleary is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in oncology, grief, and making meaning out of life's most challenging experiences. She is a senior psychologist at the Simms/Mann UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology, where she teaches and supervises graduate students in psychology, social work, medicine, and chaplaincy. Generally speaking, plant-based eating is a lack of animal protein in the diet. Instead, nutrition comes from sources such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and grains. In a way, we are what we eat. Eat junk and you'll feel like junk. Eat healthier and you'll notice the difference in your energy level and overall well-being. Is it healthy for kids to eat vegetarian diets? Yep. Plant-based diets have enormous health—and environmental—benefits. There are layers to plant-based diets. They can be broken down into vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian – the levels can vary quite a bit. So how do you make the transition to a plant-based diet (and how do you choose which one to follow)? Say you want to go plant-based but are worried about missing meat. Or you don't know where to start. Maybe you're picturing boring plates of lettuce for dinner every night. In this episode, host Mark Gomez, MD, and his guests, Amish Doshi, MD, and Christine Doshi, MS, RD, LDN, discuss the benefits of plant-based diets and offer practical tips on to get started.   Guests Amish Doshi, MD – Board-certified internal medicine physician, Edward-Elmhurst Health Christine Doshi, MS, RD, LDN – Registered dietitian, Vida Health

Looking back at 2020, we might say that this was the year that changed everything in healthcare. If that's the case, Vida will have likely played a big role in this change. They're focused on some of the most costly areas of healthcare in chronic care management and mental health. And, they sell to payers and employers who, with incentives to keep patients out of costly situations, are playing a bigger and bigger role in actual patient care. My guest today is Stephanie Tilenius, the founder and CEO of Vida Health. She founded Vida in January of 2014 (right around the same time as Redox, by the way) after a storied career in silicon valley having worked at eBay, PayPal, Google, and as an executive in residence at Kleiner Perkins. Vida is a mobile continuous care platform for preventing, managing and overcoming chronic and mental health conditions deployed at Fortune 500 companies and large national payers. We were able to talk a bit about how Vida actually interacts with patients and changes their behavior, some of their outcomes, and the shifting dynamics in the industry. Our GuestStephanie Tilenius is the Founder and CEO of Vida Health, a next-generation digital therapeutic and health coaching platform for chronic physical and mental health conditions deployed at Fortune 500 companies, large national payers and providers. Prior to starting Vida, Tilenius was with Kleiner Perkins Canfield & Byers, where she worked primarily with late-stage KPCB portfolio companies, with an emphasis on companies in the Digital Growth Fund. While at Kleiner, Stephanie invested in Nextdoor and MyFitnessPal. Prior to Kleiner, Stephanie was at Google, where she was vice president of global commerce and payments, helping build and launch new products and platforms including Google Wallet, Google Shopping and Google Express. Prior to joining Google, she was at eBay and PayPal for nine years, and in her last role was SVP of eBay.com and global product where she helped lead the eBay Marketplace turnaround. Prior to eBay, Stephanie was VP of Merchant Services at PayPal where she built the off-eBay PayPal business from the ground up into a multi-billion business. A co-founder of PlanetRx.com, she has also worked at Intel, AOL and Firefly. Stephanie sits on the public boards of Coach Inc. and Seagate Technology. Here are the highlights of our conversation with our guest:Stephanie is passionate in making an impact in other people’s lives and doing the things that matter. Everything that she had done in her career had affected millions of people and improved lives and now in Vida, she is focusing on health care and eradicating chronic conditions, which is a real problem in the country. She had worked with eBay, Google and PayPal and her experience in building products and platforms from the ground up and reimagining how things are done during her time with these companies had helped her in her current work in healthcare, which, in some ways, is one of the last industries to adopt consumer-facing technology. Vida is an app service for managing your health. They match you to a coach, a nurse or a health expert, and a digital therapy program, to work in the area that you are most concerned in. They cover both mental and physical conditions and programs focus on concerns such as diabetes, hypertension, weight loss, and smoking. They use machine learning to personalize your programs to help you succeed.Stephanie shares an example of a mobile experience of one of their customers, Jenny, which led to great results. Jenny is a 49-year old, mom of three who lost 80 lbs. in 8 months. She had diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension and found profound benefits from Vida. The new movement today is that health care is being self-care. People are now trying to track their behavior in a more holistic way than they have done in the past and this is very beneficial compared to the traditional way wherein you only get one reading per year during an annual physical exam. Vida is connected to the most popular wearables and anything out there which will enable you to monitor your health. They connect to other apps as well so they can integrate your data into one place for your coach to see. The benefit of this is for your coach to personalize your experience and help you achieve your goals by knowing everything you are doing. This day-to-day insight helps people make the right behavior change and make decisions.Pure execution and scale, just like other companies, are one of Vida’s challenges. Things get more complicated as they scale so they continue to get customer feedback – from onboarding, retention, engagement with their coaches and programs, the use of different features inside the app – and just continue to iterate. They note that they should be mindful of population profiles and their use of the app.Building a two-sided market place is always complicated and one things that has been tough for Vida is balancing the supply and demand. In addition to this, they have to have tools for both their users and coaches so this is twice the work versus other apps.
