Zoe Friedman shines in the studio with Greg and Dustin this week, talking about her parents and her passion for comedy and helping comics with her organization, Comedy Gives Back. Comedy Gives Back is the safety net for the comedy community by providing financial crisis relief, mental health and chemical dependency treatment sponsorship, and continued community support. Zoe's keen knowledge of the comedy world has its roots in her childhood, where she grew up at the world-famous comedy club, The Improvisation. Zoe landed her first job at Late Show with David Letterman where her ability to find and develop strong comedic voices evolved. During her 9 years at Worldwide Pants, she introduced David Letterman, and the world, to talents such as Louis CK, Jim Gaffigan, Mitch Hedberg and Eddie Izzard. Worldwide Pants moved her to Los Angeles to help guide the launch of The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn. During her successful 10 years at Comedy Central, she helped create and oversee stand-out programming such as Drawn Together, Lil Bush, Dog Bites Man, Crossballs, Comedians of Comedy, and Important Things with Demetri Martin. In 2013, she executive produced a documentary The Improv: 50 Years Behind The Brick Wall which premiered on EPIX and is currently available on Netflix. Double Life is a trip through the entertainment world and a gay partnership in the latter half of the twentieth century. As more and more same sex couples find it possible to say “I do,” the book serves as an important document of how far we've come.

Aline thinks back to their childhood and teenage years and remembers how their lack of interest in boys and sex made them an outcast. By the time they were in business school, their absence of sexual desire was astonishing to others, with coworkers giving them unwarranted advice on how to lose their virginity. With the help of Megan Carroll, a sociology professor who realized she was asexual at the age of 30, and Angela Chen, author of "Ace: What Asexuality Reveals About Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex,” Aline reflects on this “compulsory sexuality" and why it's so prevalent in society. This episode features excerpts from the movies: American Pie produced by Universal Pictures, Casablanca produced by Warner Brothers, and Moulin Rouge produced by Bazmark Productions and 20th Century Fox. In this episode Marc and Kristina discuss ambition, Aristotle, 1980s Miniseries and the Thorn Birds. We are looking at the way ambition drives the characters in the Thorn Birds to basically make themselves miserable. We place key characters on an Aristotelian ambition continuum and we are generally kind of ooged out by the fact that 1980s audiences were so astonished at the thought of a priest falling in love that they missed the grooming of a child by an adult man. Plus we laugh and laugh and laugh. Sources: Arnold, Eve. The Quest for More: You Can Be Ambitious and Happy. Cloverleaf Radio's host The Host with the Most Jimmy Falcon welcomes Actor David Lipper back to the show! David grew up in Montreal and moved to Los Angeles immediately after completing his BFA in Musical Theater from Emerson College in Boston. It didn't take long for one time head of Warner Brothers Television (now head of CBS), Leslie Moonvees, to recognize Lipper's ability for comedy. Lipper was quickly given the starring role in the Kaufman/Bright/Crane pilot, Reality Check, playing opposite a young Tiffany Thiessen, Giovani Ribisi, and 2 time Oscar winner, Hillary Swank. The other pilot Kaufman/Bright /Crane made that year was the mega hit Friends. When Reality Check didn't go, Moonvees put Lipper on the Warner Brothers hit show, Full House, where he played D.J.'s boyfriend, Viper, for that final season. Lipper also got to showcase his musical theater roots, by playing in the show's band, with John Stamos, and even playing live his own original music on the show. Eager to go against type and show his range, Lipper soon after played the rapist Jace in the hit NBC movie, She Fought Alone. Lipper has bounced around between playing hero and villain in both comedy and drama ever since. In 2017 Lipper played the villain known as the Nightingale Killer on the CW show, Frequency, but then played the hero in the 2018 Amazon/Vision Films release, The Unwilling. Lipper stars as the hard nosed Detective Carter opposite Kevin Mcnally, Claire Holt and Clifton Collins Jr in the highly anticipated feature, Painted Beauty, due in 2019. Lipper currently has 3 other films slated to shoot in 2019 so stay tuned for more! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jianetwork/support
Matt Groening is launching a comics publishing company called Bapper Books that will put out a Disenchantment: Untold Tales, a collection of stories based on the show Disenchantment. Groening's Bongo Comics closed earlier this year after 26 years. Despite every headline you'll see, Mad Magazine is not shutting down. Instead, Issue #9 will be the last on newsstands with issue #10 available from comic book retailers and subscriptions. Future Mad magazines will feature reprinted classic MAD pieces with the only new content coming in its end-of-year specials and occasional one-off features. The Walking Dead comic surprise twist is the comic is done with issue 193. "The Walking Dead has always been built on surprise. Not knowing what’s going to happen when you turn the page, who’s going to die, how they’re going to die... it’s been essential to the success of this series. It’s been the lifeblood that’s been keeping it going all these years, keeping people engaged. It just felt wrong and against the very nature of this series not to make the actual end as surprising as all the big deaths." The Hollywood Reporter says a TV series based on Neil Gaiman's Sandman comic will be produced by Warner Brothers Television for Netflix. It's reportedly the most expensive TV series DC Entertainment has done. Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, ABC's The Catch, Grey's Anatomy) is set to write and serve as showrunner. Gaiman will be one of the EPs. Lego-owner Kirkbi Invest is teaming up with Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board to buy Merlin Entertainment, which operates the Legoland theme parks, as well as Madame Tussauds wax museums. Lego opened the first park in 1968 in western Denmark and then sold its parks to Merlin in 2005. According to NPR, Connie Monsees told ABC News Start Here podcast about how Google Maps navigated about 100 drivers into a muddy dirt road. Monsees was stuck in traffic on the way to the Denver airport. Monsees followed Google Maps advice to exit to get around the backup and ended up on a dirt road which recent rains had turned into mud causing many of the cars to get stuck. Monsees had a four-wheel drive and was able to take two other people whose car was stuck with her. Google said the road was not marked private and while it does account for road size, "issues can arise due to unforeseen circumstances, such as when weather conditions affect the quality of roads.
