In this episode, we take the podcast on the road to Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) and talk with YouTube stalwarts Brothers Make, Louise Dennis, Curator at MoDiP (Museum of Design in Plastics) and Will Strange, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader (Sustainable Design) at AUB. The podcast was recorded on February 5th in the main lecture theatre at the university with an audience comprising AUB students and lecturers and students and their D&T teacher from a local school. In this episode, we stray from the show's normal format as the Brothers Make take us on their journey from school to how an initial desire to "hang out together after work" has become something of a YouTube hit that now takes them worldwide as they seek to inform others on how to replicate their sustainable practices and success. Louise describes how an initial desire to join the army instead turned into a passion for design and museum curation. Louise brought some artefacts from the museum to the podcast, and we have included a link to photographs of these items here: https://www.designtechnology.org.uk/for-education/media-video-and-podcasts/podcasts/live-at-arts-university-bournemouth/ Last but not least, Will will discuss the details of an exciting new course in sustainable design that will be offered at AUB for the first time this summer. You will also hear questions from the audience at the end of the podcast (including one that had his teacher sitting uncomfortably as it was answered)! So sit back and enjoy Designed for Life - Live from Arts University Bournemouth.

Today on Up In Your Business you will be swept away as art history professor Gayle Seymour, Associate Dean at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, teaches us about Arkansas's history and culture. Gayle wrote the grant that led to the 60-year Central High Little Rock Nine reunion where President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker. We will hear how Gayle commissioned the Cuban born composer, Tania Leon, to score a dramatic opera about the “Little Rock Nine” and enlisted Henry Louis Gates to write the libretto (words). This project has been stalled due to the pandemic of 2020, but we will preview a little of the opera on today's show. We will also learn about Japanese American Internment art and get an excerpt from its most famous Arkansas resident Star Trek's Mr. Sulu, George Takei. Other areas of Gayle's expertise inclued American art, Women in Art, and my favorite, Depression-era post office murals (think Norman Rockwell on a wall). Over 1400 murals were painted during the 1930's and 40's, as part of the New Deal, nineteen of which are located in Arkansas. And if that is not enough, she is an avid collector of antique Dolls! Listen and get a lesson on an array of interesting topics from this very interesting person.

At first, the operating room and an art studio may seem to be the antithesis of settings and purposes. However, they could not be more alike and comparable: the stillness of focus of both operating on an organ and painting on a canvas, the vast array of sterile scalpels and paintbrushes, the richness of flowing bright red blood on the table and the maroon pigment dripping on the floor from the board, and the surge of adrenaline in the events of a crashing patient and a new creative idea in the spur of the moment. For our episode's expert guest today, this is definitely the case: the colliding worlds of brain surgery and the fine arts, the sacred space of the surgical room and the atelier. Truly, when she is not operating on a brain, she is painting one.We are joined by ambidextrous neurosurgeon and multimedia artist Dr. Kathryn Ko. Keyaira is a Lead Business Partner on the Merchandising Vendor Development Team at Target Headquarters. In her current role, she is responsible for sourcing, connecting, growing and amplifying emerging diverse and/or women owned brands to support Target's merchandising strategies and drive inclusive assortment for Target's diverse guests. Her notable and most recent work includes helping curate Target's Black History Month Assortments, Tabitha Brown's Limited Time Apparel and Food launches and Target's Activation booths and programming at Essence Fest in New Orleans. Keyaira has a passion for retaining and growing brands, allowing them to reach their fullest potential by empowering them with the right foundational tools, partners and resources in hopes that it creates a space to fuel generational wealth and drive economic vitality and equity. Prior to Target, Keyaira was at Amazon Fashion, leading the Women's Product Development team within Private Brands. Much of what Keyaira loves is involved with collaboration and connection. Assembling a team with gifts different than mine, who shine in ways I don't have, has been both inspiring and crucial to my success. Keyaira is a 2002 Graduate of West High school in Waterloo, IA and has degrees from The University of Northern Iowa and The Academy of Arts University. Keyaira currently resides in Waterloo with her loving husband and 10-year-old old son. Here's what we covered on the episode: How I met Keyaira when she was speaking at a panel at The Black and Brown Summit, a local event I attended in earlier this year, and I wondered how a girl from Iowa got to work with brands at Target Keyaira shares that at an early age she was always was interested in fashion, and was fascinated by how fashion worked She knew that the University of UNI had a great fashion and textiles program and the program showed her the familiarity she needed to know to get the opportunities she wanted Initially, she was interested in the buying part of fashion and she got her first opportunities by networking and cold calling, as this was before the opportunity By building up her network, working in retail in high school, she got her first opportunity in the field at Target in Minneapolis Melissa and Keyaira shared the same experience of not having an awareness of big fashion brands like Louis Vuitton or Manolo Blahnik growing up in Iowa until we saw Sex and the City Keyaira used her experience working at Victoria's Secret when she was younger and worked as an intern for Von Maur How she got laid off from Target after a few months during the recession, but they called her back shortly after Knowing Yourself, Knowing Your Wealth, and Knowing the Shelf Why it's important for Keyaira to equip the brand she works with to be successful at any retailer that they chose, showing them how to know themselves, know their wealth and know the shelf Know yourself: do you know yourself and do you have the capacity + capability to really scale in retail?  Being “retail ready” means you must be ready to get a retailer a shipment of 20,000 units in less than 2 weeks when they're ready to give you a PO, your answer should be yes Know your wealth: You really have to be truthful and honest with yourself that you're in the right place to be in retail, as it could put you out of business if you're not ready Know the shelf: you must understand your competition and understand the retailer where you want to be. Where do you want your product to be placed? Go there and take a picture to see if it fits there.    Melissa shared how she learned through her own desire to start a mascara line, but she decided to put that on hold Keyaira shares that she currently works within food and beverage, but may crossover in apparel, beauty and more Why Melissa is excited to learn more about what Keyaira does because it helps her and her audience learn how the retail sourcing process works The ins and outs of how Keyaira's team at Target works How Keyaira's team works with retail-ready brands, and learns more about them, like what their costs are, what retailers they're already in, and making sure that they're aligning brands that match the merchant strategies Each merchant or buyer has a strategy they want to follow, for example, bringing in more diverse brands for rice and beans Keyaira shares how she finds out about up and coming brands events, online and has a collaborative conversation with her merchant and buyer, who have the final say on who makes the final decision If they're interested in a brand, then Keyaira helps them get ready for a line review, and making a great impression and staying in touch with your buyer to continue the conversation Why Keyaira recommends brands have patience in the retail process; buyers change hands all the time, timing is everything and next year it could fit right into the new strategy How over the years of talking to vendors and understanding why it's so important to know yourself before you start a business, even though in this day and age anyone can start a business Keyaira shares an example of a luxury brand who was already on the shelf at Saks, and how they were adamant about being on the shelf at Target, but it wasn't really a fit for the brand Why having the awareness that as your business scales, your team must scale as well, or knowing when you need to bring in a distributor, and being able to re-evaluate your business on a consistent basis Keyaira's perspective on partnerships Keyaira shares an example of a how they did a small activation with Coca-Cola and to amplify black-owned brands like Ghetto Gastro with food demos, and created a moment with guests to have a connection and wanted to have a Coke The goal now is to drive guest discoverability with classic, iconic brands to drive awareness to brands like Ghetto Gastro How Target works with organizations like WBENC, and why those partnerships are crucial to the success because it's another layer that helps creates success and inclusivity  Melissa shares that her experience at Dress for Success Worldwide opened her eyes to different brand activations and partnerships that were out there and happening in the real world  How a lot of what Keyaira does is organic and fluid; but how her role and the area of business and the human centric approach matters, and why that's missing from a lot of brands  Why Keyaira loves meeting new brands and learning more about them Why inclusive design matters How inclusive design has been around for a long time, but now it's getting recognition it deserves Why there's power in leaning into inclusive design, and why it's a huge misconception, for example, that all black-owned brands are only designed for black people A lot of times, the brand is only serving products for everyone Why Keyaira recommends that brands celebrate heritage, and how data shows that buyers wanna support brands that have that messaging that celebrate heritage Why brands are now putting the logos of the causes they support and the certifications you have on your packaging Buyers are looking to bring cultures together; and how Target is seeing data that backs it up Why it's important for brand to have inclusive brands, inclusive products and as it relates to design and branding, it's not going away Why more retailers are going to lean into it more, and why brands should lean to it, be authentic to it, showcase it and not hide it  Sometimes when brands get ready to be inside of a retailer, they want to change their mission statement but there's beauty in who you are, and stay authentic to your brand and yourself  How you can connect with Keyaira on Instagram or send her a message at keyaira.k.miller@gmail.com Links mentioned: Connect with Keyaira on Instagram Learn more about Keyaira's role at Target   Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. Whatever your preconceptions about the idea of urban rewilding, I suggest that you listen to what Zoe and Andrew say before you jump to conclusions. It is not, nor could it be, another Knepp, Benloit or Wild Ken Hill, but it is a remarkable initiative looking at nature through a joined-up, city-wide lens, whilst engaging communities and tackling mental health issues at the same time. Az AMZAM zeneiskolában tanul Nagy János és Mózes Tamara zongoraművészektől. Tött formációban játszik és vannak saját szerzeményi is. Jelenleg a bécsi Music and Arts University jazz-zongora szakára jár. Australia's natural history museums, like many government institutions that played a role in colonisation, have been viewed with great suspicion by First Nations Peoples. Today, the Australian Museum stands firm in its commitment to acknowledge the wrongs of the past. Part of that process is truth-telling. In this episode, Laura McBride – Wailwan and Kooma woman, and Director, First Nations, at the Australian Museum – shares three important pieces of the 2021 exhibition, Unsettled. We hear from Aunty Fay Mosely, a Wiradjuri Elder who was taken from her family when she was ten years old; we will travel back to 1770 to hear the accounts of Kaureg Ppeoples on the arrival of Cook's tall ship; and we will return to the present to learn an Aboriginal teaching of caring for one another and sharing with one another. Guests: Aunty Fay Mosley, Uncle Richard Waubin Aken, and Fleur and Laurance Magick Dennis Host: Laura McBrideFind images, extra stories and transcript at australian.museum/explore-----Elder Waubin Richard Aken is a Traditional Owner of the island of Tuined and appointed Tribal Historian for Kaurareg First Nations people. He works with elders of the Kaurareg lands and waters to strengthen alliances with the wider Cape York community. Richard was involved in the re-establishment of the Horn Island community through a Native Title Claim of the Kaurareg nation and actively participates in the maintenance of his people's unique culture. Fleur and Laurance Magick Dennis Milan Dhiiyaan means “One Family or One Mob”. We are referring to all of us, all of humanity, as one family on mother earth. Andrew Schoultz (1975, Milwaukee, WI) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. He received his BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco, CA. Schoultz has participated in several international solo and group exhibitions, including Joshua Liner Gallery NY, Galerie Droste, Wuppertal, GER or Galerie LJ in Paris, FR. His works are represented in important collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum (LACMA), the Berkeley Art Museum or the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA. Schoultz utilizes a signature style of densely-packed, meticulously-rendered motifs – archaic war machines, the iconography of the American Dollar bill, and cataclysmic events, both natural and man-made – to represent the turmoil of the contemporary world. He makes historic references to antique etchings and Persian miniature painting as well as to William T. Wiley, M. C. Escher and Mission School street art. But Schoultz's art is very much his own – an intense vision of a planet threatened by overcrowding and overconsumption and societies under siege by the governments that are there to protect them.

The latest university student numbers have sparked renewed debate about the Federal Government's controversial fee shake-up. With lower cost course applications up, the Education Minister says the bid to steer graduates into critical employment areas is working. But, critics say the policy will simply burden some graduates with decades of debt.

This week, Mark and Allen break down the Episode that shows us how great team building can be... and how awful some noises can be.  After a mural in City Hall is defaced, the Pawnee departments compete to design a new replacement. Leslie and gang face adversity in the process, both from without (Sewage Department) and from within (disagreement in the ranks).  Meanwhile, business is booming for Andy's shoe-shine stand, and Ron shows support by getting his shoes shined.  In the process, Andy and Ron share... an uncomfortable moment... and are unsure how to deal with it.  As always, we tackle hard questions that would break lesser men, such as...  Which is better, a lizard puking up Skittles, or a human-sized hamster wheel?  What does a death row convict's art therapy look like?  Who would sit at the head of your table: Greg Kinnear, a NASCAR, or Ron Swanson?  Whose idea is the best?  Who will win?  Join us and see.  And for God's sake... If you ever get your shoes shined, keep your eyes open, look straight ahead, and keep QUIET.  Many thanks to our awesome sponsors, the Pawnee School of the Arts University (a.k.a. PSAU) and Dr. Harry's Podiatry.

En Mis Palabras artists share their thoughts and experiences on racially accurate casting, representation in the performing arts and the importance of telling diverse stories on the operatic stage in today’s episode. Guests include Mica Dominguez-Robinson, who originated the leading role of Ana Maria, and brand-new cast members Daniela Guzmán-Égüez (Ana Maria) and Armando Contreras (Esteban). Hosted by CCO Marketing Content Manager and Opera Central Producer Margaret Siegrist. Central City Opera commissioned our bilingual, one-act opera En Mis Palabras/In My Own Words more than 15 years ago, with the goal of acknowledging the 1/5 Latino population here in Colorado. The opera tackles themes of immigration, family and coming of age and is performed regularly as a part of year-round education and community engagement programming. Over 19,000 people have seen it since its 2006 premiere. Central City Opera committed to casting the lead role of Ana Maria only with LatinX artists since the opera was commissioned, and that practice has been honored to this day. This third and final conversation focused on En Mis Palabras and diversity, equity and inclusion in the arts amplifies the voices of the artists of color who perform in the program!   Settle in for coffee and conversation with us. Most shows, including En Mis Palabras, are cast with multiple artists in each role so that Central City Opera is able to best serve our communities from a scheduling perspective. The artists you’ll meet in these episodes are just a few of the many current and past cast members of the show!   What are Mica, Dani and Armando up to in the near future? Mica looks forward to performing the following roles in postponed productions: Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, the “Day by Day” singer in Godspell, ensemble in Sweeney Todd and Bright Star and returning as a featured singer in the Cirque Dreams National Tour.   Mica talks about a couple momentous moments for inclusive casting in musical theater: Brittney Johnson Makes History as Broadway's First Glinda of Color in Wicked Broadway's Phantom of the Opera Announces First Asian-American Christine   Many performers of color and organizations championing diversity, equity and inclusion were mentioned in the episode. Check out the links below for more information: Jessye Norman, opera singer Leontyne Price, opera singer Nadine Sierra, opera singer Pretty Yende, opera singer Frontiers: Fort Worth Opera Libretto Workshop Lyric Opera of Kansas City   Our host mentioned a story about the famously voluptuous opera singer Luisa Tetrazzini (1871–1940) playing a character who was meant to be wasting away with consumption (tuberculosis) as a testament to the lack of importance placed on type-casting during different eras of opera history.    Armando talked about preference against bilingual communication in United States’ schools during the ‘70s and ‘80s that influenced the experiences of his family members. Read more about the “English-only Movement” in education.   Dani talks about “zarzuela,” a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular songs, as well as dance.”   Shout out to the educators and educational institutions referenced in this episode: Denver School of the Arts University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music Vinson Cole, Armando’s voice teacher   This episode features musical excerpts from our 2008 archival recording of En Mis Palabras. Hello everyone and welcome back to Speaking of the Arts. My guest today is Kristy Edmonds. Kristy currently serves as the Executive and Artistic Director for UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance https://cap.ucla.edu/ . Prior to this, Edmunds was the Founding Executive and Artistic Director of the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA)https://www.pica.org/ and the TBA Festival (Time Based Art) in Portland, Oregon https://www.pica.org/tba/ . She was the Artistic Director for the Melbourne International Arts Festival https://2019.festival.melbourne/ from 2005 to 2008, and was the first to serve an unprecedented four-year term. Upon completion she was appointed as the Head of the School of Performing Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts/University of Melbourne, and after one year became the Deputy Dean for the College. Concurrently, Edmunds worked as the inaugural Consulting Artistic Director for the now critically heralded Park Avenue Armory in New York (2009–2012)http://www.armoryonpark.org/ . Our conversation took place during mid May. We talked about the unique relationship between artists, producers, managers and agents and how social distancing has completely changed this dynamic. Kristy also spoke about some of the scenarios she is exploring with her team at CAP UCLA https://cap.ucla.edu/ for future presentations as well as some very important resources that artists can take advantage of right now. These include Americans for the Arts and ArtistsRelief.org https://www.artistrelief.org/ . The latter is a fund which is currently awarding $5,000 grants to artists facing dire financial emergencies due to COVID-19. You can go do ArtistsRelief.org to learn more about this. I am grateful for Kristy’s time and I think you find find this conversation both very honest in terms of where the performing arts are currently at as well as inspiring. Thank you for listening everyone.

Patrick McMichael, Partner with Denon & Doyle Entertainment, is a Golden State native with a silver tongue and passion for the special events industry. After spending a few years  behind a DJ system, Patrick has taken to the stage as a professional MC and host nationally. Professionally seasoned as a Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP), Past President of ILEA-NCC, Past VP of MPINCC's ACE, and having sat on several different non-profit trade association boards, he is no stranger to being spontaneous while staying strategic. His passion project is with the SEARCH Foundation, a charitable organization that gives money to individuals in the special events industry that are in crisis. Patrick believes that energy, timing, and most importantly, delivery, are everything. Whether moderating a panel of industry professionals, delivering an education session, playing host to a national convention, or just keeping a crowd engaged - he can deliver!Clients include: The Academy of Arts University, The San Francisco Giants, Kron 4, The Golden State Warriors, Google, The Academy of Sciences, St. Mary's College, Facebook, Tqitter, Netflix and many more.Just give the guy a well-cut suit and a microphone....****Patrick and I sit on the ILEA-NCC Board together and I'm super grateful he was able to join us on today's episodes! Other than networking tricks, the biggest takeaway I'd like you to have is to remember to ASK QUESTIONS. Audio Visual terms aren't always the easiest to understand. It's definitely best to have basic knowledge if you're an event planner, but don't sign contracts unless you know exactly what it means and what it does! Make sure to find a vendor you trust as well. Tokyo. All the Sounds That I Can Feel From Deep Surroundings Author: Simina Oprescu The diversity of Tokyo’s sounds can make a string of connection about the Japanese noise culture. They seem influenced by it every day, by this constant knitting of different textures and tonic profiles. Mostly it is a mechanical profile, almost nothing organic but the voice of the whole humans gathered in one. Everything is wrapped in and comes through this artificial-synthetic medium, like poor speakers from the street or old radio. It becomes a walk of discovery of sounds and small areas of quietness, and the impact of the noise afterwards, for a short while, and basically a subtle flux, a drone. Simina Oprescu is composing since 2012, interested in the possibilities of sound’s integration in the visual mediums and the capacity of sound to change radically the understanding of the image: „In the Beginning was the Sound”. Simina studied photography and video art at the Arts University in Bucharest and one year in the electroacoustic composition department at the Royal Conservatory of Mons, Belgium. www.siminaoprescu.com Recorded, edited and mixed by Simina Oprescu for SEMI SILENT. Today, I'm very excited to have the brilliant violinist, violist, and conductor Julian Rachlin on the show! At the end of this very busy week, playing with and conducting the Chicago Symphony, Julian graciously took the time to sit with me and discuss meticulous practicing, mindful music-making, and his deep love of the art form! He covers many topics, including studying with Boris Kuschnir and Mr. Kuschnir's thorough approach to mastering the instrument, his views on the lifelong path that is growing as an artist, his daily practice regimen, and how playing the viola and conducting have allowed him to explore music from different angles. Julian elaborates on: How he believes we are never done learning How the fact that his parents never made him practiced helped foster his deep love of music His daily practice regimen Why the responsibility to grow as an artist lies with the student How musicians are a community How playing the viola and conducting allow him to explore music from different angles Why we should brush our taste as often as we brush our teeth Finding the right balance between being completely open-minded and fully convinced (and when to be which)   MORE ABOUT JULIAN RACHLIN: Website: http://www.julianrachlin.com/ YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm_Eyb3YAt3m7_ic4VTA84A Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/julianrachlin/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/julianrachlin/ Elisabeth Gilels: Daily Exercises for the Violinist Boris Kuschnir: http://www.boriskuschnir.com/   Violinist, violist and conductor Julian Rachlin is one of the most exciting and respected musicians of our time. Shownotes As an artist, curator, artistic director and frequent keynote speaker internationally, Kristy Edmunds has a reputation for innovation and depth in the presentation of contemporary performing arts. In collaboration with master artists, she has curated unique platforms that survey the breadth of their artistry, while placing equal emphasis on the support and commissioning of new work by some of today’s leading performance creators across disciplines. Edmunds was the Founding Executive and Artistic Director of the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) and the TBA Festival (Time Based Art) in Portland, Oregon. She was the Artistic Director for the Melbourne International Arts Festival from 2005 to 2008, and was the first to serve an unprecedented four-year term. Upon completion she was appointed as the Head of the School of Performing Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts/University of Melbourne, and after one year became the Deputy Dean for the College. Concurrently, Edmunds worked as the inaugural Consulting Artistic Director for the now critically heralded Park Avenue Armory in New York (2009–2012). Curating the initial three years of programming, she established the formative identity of the PAA with commissioned work by artists such as Ann Hamilton, the final performance event of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company; Tom Sachs, Janet Cardiff, STREB, Ryoji Ikeda, and the Tune-In Festival with Philip Glass and many others. Edmunds’ robust career has included work as a visual artist, an independent filmmaker, a playwright, a director and a teacher. She holds a bachelor’s in film direction from Montana State University and a master’s in playwriting and theater direction from Western Washington University. In recognition of her contribution to the arts, Edmunds was bestowed with the honor of Chevalier (Knight) de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 2016. She is married with two sons, and now calls Los Angeles home. She is the Executive and Artistic Director of UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance, one of the nation’s leading presenting organizations for contemporary performing artists. Kristy writes about covidMore about Kristy Kristy Edmunds website Kristy’s mission – “I love building synergies between people. How do we gather around some form of expressive truth that connects us from being strangers to being part of something, part of a common experience, part of a sense of discovery or being illuminated to one another’s plights? Artists are the bridge between a kind of expressive truth that makes us feel more awake to the world, and we can find camaraderie all over the world with people who have a relationship to that artist or to that project or to that art form. It’s literally a way of knitting together a river of culture throughout the world.” Kristy’s one-line message to the world – “Get it together.” The SUE Speaks Blog Post about Kristy Edmunds Talking points from this episode Childhood in a family of artisans and craftspeople. Their dedication for the love of it. Making arty things in childhood and eventually majored in filmmaker to tell stories. Wanted to understand artists so became producer. Thousands of artists she’s worked with. Bringing their work along. Responsibility to deliver their ideas. What this season for CAP will be: dance, jazz, global music, theater international and local, cultural commentators, many different kinds of artisitic literacies. Gives some specific examples. Challenge of time we’re living in to get audience – people on overwhelm. And things like visas, given this administration – challenge of bringing in international work. But she has an eternal optimism. Doesn’t give up. Great triumph founding the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. Work for the institution or the people?

This week, in our heritage series, we talk to Professor Nombeko Mpako, who is the Acting Director of the School of Arts at the University of South Africa and chair of the Department of Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology. We discuss the skills contribution of the Arts to human development, such as constructive thinking, imagination, empathy, confidence and creativity, which align to the World Economic Forum’s projected set of skills for the workforce in 2020. We note that although the Arts are compulsory subjects in school curricula, fulfilling this mandate is hampered by inadequate resources. We discuss the work of renowned female artists as well as the meaning and the objectives behind their work. We remark on the role of education and highlight the University of South Africa’s objectives to transform and afford recognition to Africanness; to embrace African knowledge, African ways of knowing and African ways of teaching to expand and expose Africa’s wisdom to the world. Today's guest is Zelda de Hollander, who runs Studio Shotz Photography, a Boutique photographic studio in Christchurch, Dorset. Photography has always been a passion of Zelda's. She got her first camera aged 5 and has loved photography ever since. All her pocket money used to go on developing films she'd taken of her life while growing up.  After A-Levels,  Zelda studied for a (BA) Hons in Commercial Photography at The Arts University at Bournemouth, at the same time working part time at a small photographic studio; Studio Shotz.  It was then that the owner decided to move on and Zelda made the brave move to take over the business and run the studio herself, straight out of Uni, at only 21 years old (with massive help and support from her parents). In May 2014, Studio Shotz Photography left it's retail shop, moving to Christchurch to become an appointment only studio space residing in a residential address. This has allowed Zelda to spend more time with her clients and to work much more flexible hours as well as taking on more location work. 3 years on, Studio Shotz is busier than ever! In working from home Zelda now has the work-life balance that she always missed out on whilst being on the high street & is now working with some of the biggest and most well-known companies in the Dorset area. Every day is different; which makes going to work quite exciting! One of the people Zelda credits with supporting her work is Sam Acton of Domestic Angels, you can listen to Sam's interview on the podcast show here Connect with Zelda on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/studioshotz/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/StudioShotz Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/studioshotz Linkedin - linkedin.com/in/zelda-de-hollander-60822627 Her amazing work is on her website here - http://studioshotz.co.uk/

The Creative Economy: Angela McRobbie, Professor of Communications at the Goldsmiths, questions what's at stake in the new politics of culture and creativity. Talking to a range of artists, stylists, fashion designers and policy makers, she considers if the new 'creative economy' is a form of labour reform which accustoms the young, urban middle classes to a world of work which lacks the security of previous generations. She's joined by Christopher Frayling, Chancellor of the Arts University, Bournemouth and former Chair of the Arts Council England. Grudge spending: Ian Loader, Professor of Criminology at the University of Oxford, explores how we feel about buying security, compared to more enjoyable forms of spending. Producer: Jayne Egerton.
