The Betar movement appears to have sprung back to life in recent months. But why is this so threatening to the official World Zionist Organization? Yehuda HaKohen is joined by Ronn Torossian - a key figure in reviving Z'ev Jabotinsky's Betar movement that appears to be experiencing a major come back as a result of the nationalist awakening that's taken place within Diaspora Jewish communities since the events of October 7, 2023. The two discuss the merits of more aggressive Jewish activism, the distinctions between Revisionist Zionist and Sternist thought, and Betar's disqualification from the recent elections for the World Zionist Congress.

In this powerful and heartfelt episode of Meaningful People, we sit down with Adriana, the woman behind the viral “Non-Jewish Nanny” persona, to hear her remarkable story of transformation. What began as a nanny job for Orthodox Jewish families in Boca Raton led to a deep, personal journey that ultimately brought her to an Orthodox Jewish conversion. Adriana shares what it was like growing up Christian in Florida, how she was first introduced to Jewish customs through the families she worked for, and how the innocent questions and pure love of the children she cared for opened her eyes to the beauty of Judaism. As she fell more in love with the Jewish way of life, her social media presence unexpectedly exploded, offering a glimpse into her unique perspective as someone discovering Jewish life from the outside in. But this story goes deeper than curiosity. Adriana opens up about surviving an abusive relationship, finding refuge in the warmth of the Jewish community, and learning to find purpose and healing through faith. She candidly explains why she kept her conversion private, and how every step of her journey—whether joyous or painful—ultimately led her to a life of meaning and connection with Hashem. Adriana's story is inspiring, emotional, and a beautiful reminder of how one person's journey can ignite faith and pride in others. If you've ever wondered what it's like to discover Judaism through fresh eyes, this is the episode for you. From Evangelical Missionary to Orthodox Jew: This is Shannon Nuszen's Unbelievable Journey! In this powerful interview, Shannon Nuszen shares her extraordinary transformation from being an evangelical missionary—trained to convert Jews—to embracing Orthodox Judaism. Raised in a fundamentalist Christian family, Shannon later joined the Christian messianic movement, working with missionary groups targeting Jews, but eventually converted to Judaism and now regrets her past involvement. What led her to question her beliefs? How did her deep dive into Jewish texts change everything? What challenges did she face in leaving Christianity and converting to Judaism? With over 15 years in the counter-missionary field, she educates Jewish communities about missionary tactics. She founded Beyneynu, an organization that monitors missionary activity and raises awareness among Jewish leaders. Now, through her organization Beyneynu, she works to protect Jewish communities from deceptive missionary tactics. This is an important mission, as the there are more and more Jews converting to Christianity. In 2015, there were 15,000 Jews belonging to Messianic congregations here in Israel – as of 2020, there were more than 30,000 reported. Beyneynu has watched this community grow from 120 Messianic congregations and outreach programs to over 300, and there are currently over 200 websites dedicated to converting Jewish people to Christianity, mostly through media in English, Hebrew, Russian, and Arabic. https://beyneynu.com This episode was made possible thanks to our sponsors: ► PZ Deals - Download the app and never pay full price again! https://app.pz.deals/install/mpp ____________________________________________________ ► Eretz Hakodesh - Vote to Keep Israel Holy! Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Political correspondent Tal Schneider and diaspora reporter Zev Stub join host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Schneider discusses further details about some of the hostages that have emerged from the recently released hostages, including signs of life about twin brothers Gali and Ziv Berman. There is also the news that hostage Shlomo Mansour, 86, appears to have been killed on October 7, 2023, his body taken into captivity by Hamas terrorists. As the government cabinet meets Tuesday morning to discuss the Hamas accusation that Israel has breached the ceasefire deal, Schneider reviews what those breaches may be, including that Israel didn't send a negotiating team to Qatar for the second stage of the deal, and its delays in sending certain supplies to Gaza. Stub offers a preview of the World Zionist Organization's upcoming elections in March, and how the event, held every five years, represents the Orthodox-liberal struggle in the Jewish world. He also discusses the growth of the Orthodox Union in Israel, and the organization's decision to embrace that growth by moving into new offices. Please see today's ongoing live blog for more updates. Sponsored by the World Zionist Organization, this lively event is hosted by Yonatan Vendriger and contains remarks by Ariel Wiss of the Israeli Ministry of Education. It is essentially a contest amongst amateur Tanach experts (the selections are taken from both Prophets and the Writings, in addition to the Torah) who have to answer non-multiple choice questions about quotes from the Hebrew Bible. Their erudition is stunning, and eventually a winner and a runner-up emerge and are crowned. Also, there are several musical performances by singer Gilad Paz (accompanied by keyboardist Moshe Elmakias), including Hatikvah at the end, as well as classic Israeli hits throughout the contest (such as "Hineni Kan" by Yehoram Gaon). Shnayor Burton, a past champion and familiar face to fans of the Bible Contest, returns as a judge. The head judge is Aure Ben-Zvi Goldblum, a specialist in Biblical Hebrew. Recorded at Congregation Shearith Israel in Manhattan.

Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring one key issue currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, hosted by deputy editor Amanda Borschel-Dan. A month before the Hamas onslaught on Israel's south that would claim the life of his son, Rav Doron Perez inked a deal to translate to Hebrew his English-language book, "The Jewish State From Opposition to Opportunity: A Vision for Unity in Israel and Why the World Needs It." In the book, the Johannesburg-born Executive Chairman of the Mizrachi World Movement, also a member of the board of the World Zionist Organization, aims to use an "old-new spiritual approach to the Jewish state," in part to help bridge the country's widening gaps. And then, on October 7, the Perez family suffered a double blow in learning that eldest son Yonatan was injured and second child Daniel was missing. It was only after 163 days of uncertainty that the family learned that Daniel was indeed killed on that bloody Saturday after a heroic battle for the protection of Nachal Oz. Now, Perez is reconciling this unmeasurable loss with his staunch Religious Zionism, even as some in Israel would give in to a very understandable anger and blame. This week on What Matters Now, we talk about the past almost eight months in which the family incrementally learned of Daniel's fate. What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. This episode was produced by the Pod-Waves. Media shapes so much of how we think about the world. It informs our political beliefs, but also our values and attitudes towards all of life. And it certainly influences people's opinions about Jews, Israel and the war with Hamas. This week I had the pleasure of Shmoozing with David Olesker. Originally from the UK, David studied at Sunderland Polytechnic College. After making Aliyah to Israel in 1982, he worked with the World Zionist Organization's Educational Resource Center, where he helped pioneer the application of informal education techniques to training advocates for Israel. In 1989, he founded an independent organization called ICAP in order to bring these techniques to a wider audience. JCCAT, the Jerusalem Center for Communications and Advocacy Training, builds on ICAP's work to further refine and disseminate these techniques. He has worked with AIPAC, Jewish Federations, and Israeli diplomats across several ministries including the Ministry of Tourism and the Foreign Ministry.Follow us to join the conversation!https://shmoozing.nethttps://www.facebook.com/groups/5871772776273202https://twitter.com/moshezeldman
The World Zionist Organization has called on Jews in the Diaspora who have apartments in Israel to open them up for families who have been evacuated from the Gaza periphery. Shabbat Sermon with guest speaker Dr. Yizhar Hess of the World Zionist Organization at Temple Beth Am, Los Angeles, March 25, 2023. Dr. Hess is introduced by Rabbi-Cantor Hillary Chorny. (Youtube) Special Guest: Dr. Yizhar Hess.
Earlier this week, in the Swiss city of Basel, the World Zionist Organization convened to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the First Zionist Congress, which was the brainchild of one of Zionism's founding fathers, Theodor Herzl. At the time, the condition of European Jewry was precarious and degraded. The solution, in Herzl's eyes, was not to be found in the animating Jewish impulse of the age: assimilation. He thought no amount of assimilation would rid the Jews of anti-Semitism, and that instead only a political solution would work. That political solution, of course, was to establish political sovereignty in the land of Israel. As he put it in his opening remarks, “We wish to lay the cornerstone of the house in which the Jewish nation will one day find shelter.” Our guest this week is the Israeli scholar Daniel Polisar. To him, the early flowerings of that idea in the First Zionist Congress were so significant that the meeting was, to quote the title of an essay he wrote on the subject in 2017 in Mosaic, “the most politically significant meeting of any group of Jews in the last 1,800 years.” Today we revisit that essay, and look back at the First Zionist Congress, how it came to be, and what it aimed to achieve. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.
The World Zionist Congress turns 125 this week. The international organization bills itself as a kind of global Jewish parliament, setting policies for major Israeli institutions and allocating more than a billion dollars a year to support them. Usually, the delegates meet every five years in Israel; this Sunday, August 28, however, they'll be meeting in Basel, Switzerland, where Theodor Herzl convened the very first iteration of the congress in 1897. The World Zionist Organization is holding two days of events in Basel to mark what's being called the most significant Zionist gathering this decade, featuring leading speakers such as Israel's president and Canadians Gil Troy, Sylvan Adams and Danna Azrieli. Given the weight of the event, it's no surprise that David Matlow, the world's leading collector of Herzl memorabilia and a regular CJN contributor, is heading to Basel to attend. Matlow joins the show to give a taste of what the first Congress was like and what challenges still face Zionists today. Rachel Cohen Yeshurun grew up in Montreal, where she attended an Orthodox girls' school, which taught that women should never actually hold a Torah scroll. These days, however, after she moved to Israel 30 years ago, she's not only breaking that rule regularly, but teaching other women in Israel to read from the Torah as well. Every month, she attends prayer sessions for Women of the Wall, an organization that advocates for women's right to pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. She's been arrested more than once by Israeli police, though the country's Supreme Court has ruled that the women are not breaking any laws or causing any harm. They are making incremental progress, having won the right to wear prayer shawls and tefillin, though the rabbi in charge of the Wall still prohibits them from using Torahs or bringing their own. Still, each month, the Women of the Wall visit the holy site, only to be disrupted by ultra-Orthodox protestors who spit on, shove and whistle at the women. It's a scene that has been playing out for years—and now, after a particularly heated encounter on May 2, inflamed by the World Zionist Organization reportedly bussing in Haredi girls to protest, Cohen Yeshurun joins The CJN Daily to talk about what it's been like to fight for women's rights at one of the most sacred spots in Judaism. Part 1 of 3: Ben-Gurion's passion for Zionism, which began early in life, led him to become a major Zionist leader and executive head of the World Zionist Organization in 1946. As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935, and later president of the Jewish Agency Executive, he was the de facto leader of the Jewish community in Palestine, and largely led its struggle for an independent Jewish state in Mandatory Palestine. On 14 May 1948, he formally proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel, and was the first to sign the Israeli Declaration of Independence, which he had helped to write. Ben-Gurion led Israel during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, and united the various Jewish militias into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Subsequently, he became known as "Israel's founding father".thefacthunter.comNever stop searching for the truth

He then discusses how he ended up in his role at the World Zionist Organization and the challenges that he faced on college campuses, the difference between experiential and other forms of education, and what the poverty and inequality looks like in Israel and what he has seen to be most effective in combating it. Ofer then speaks about how he has managed leading a global team spread across 15+ countries, how his approach to running Masa has shifted over Covid, and how he dealt with the recent tragedy in Meiron, in which 2 Masa participants passed away. He closes by sharing his feelings around how the culture in many parts of the world are making people genuinely afraid to show support for Israel, what he wants his legacy to be, and what it means to lead.

The Strong Women’s Club Women's Success Stories in Business and in Life
She was born Golda Mabovitch in 1898 in Kiev, which is now in the Ukraine, but then it was part of the Russian Empire. In her autobiography, Golda tells about her father boarding their home up, during the pogroms in 1905 in Kiev, where over 100 Jews were murdered. In 1906 her family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was a natural leader, famous for having raised money to pay for textbooks for her whole school when she was only 11 years old. She knew how to speak from her heart. She ran away from home when she was 15 years old because her parents wanted her to leave school and get a job. She went to Denver, where her sister Sheyna lived. There she learned about Zionism. She met Morris Myerson there, and they married, on the condition that they would move to Israel, which they did, in 1921 to Kibbutz Merhavia. They moved to Jerusalem in 1924 and had two children, Menahem and Sarah. In Jerusalem, Golda Meir became politically active, by representing the Histadrut Trade Union and also serving as a delegate to the World Zionist Organization. This area, at the time, was under the control of Great Britain, as prescribed by the sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916. This was a secret agreement from 1916 between the French and the British, which the Russians agreed to, that split up the region of what is now Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Armenia, and Israel. The British White Paper of 1939 went so far to allow the Arab official of the area to determine the rate of Jewish Immigration, including during the Second World War. Golda Meir fought hard against these policies at the time. When it was decided that the Jews would be given a homeland in the area of Palestine, it was clear that there would be a war. Golda knew English, so she knew how to speak to the American Jews. She went on a fundraising trip, and came back with 50M dollars! They were able then to buy weapons from Czechoslovakia, which enabled them to defend themselves during the war of independence. In 1948, Israel declared its independence and Golda Meir's signature is on that declaration. She was elected to the Israeli parliament, and when the fighting with the Arabs started, David Ben-Gurion sent her, dressed up in disguise as an Arab, on a secret mission, to plead with King Abdullah I not to enter into a war against Israel. He declined. On May 10, 1948, four days before the official establishment of Israel, Meir traveled to Amman, Jordan, disguised as an Arab woman for a secret meeting with King Abdullah I of Transjordan at which she urged him not to join the other Arab countries in attacking the Jews. Abdullah asked her not to hurry to proclaim a state. Meir replied: "We've been waiting for 2,000 years. Is that hurrying?" The war expanded to include Egypt, Transjordan, Iraq, and Syria, all against Israel. The result, as we know, is that Israel preserved her independence. Golda was named the Minister of Labor, then the Foreign Minister. Carrying the first Israeli-issued passport, Meir was appointed Israel's ambassador to the Soviet Union. In 1955, on Ben-Gurion's instructions, she stood for the position of mayor of Tel Aviv. She lost by the two votes of the religious bloc who withheld their support because she was a woman. Golda Meir gave a speech to the UN in 1962 urging Arabs to agree to full disarmament. Here is part of the introduction: [audio clip on podcast] When Golda Meir was 68 years old, even though she wanted to leave the world of politics, she was convinced to stay on as the head of the Mapai party, which she was able to merge with two other parties into the Israel Labor Party. After Prime Minister Levi Eshkol suddenly died in 1969, she put off her retirement again and agreed to serve out the remainder of his term. Then her party won the elections, and she got a further four years as prime minister. During her time as prime minister, she met with Henry Kissinger, she agreed for “security versus sovereignty,” where Israel would accept that Egypt has all of Sinai, while Egypt would accept Israeli presence in some of the Sinai strategic positions. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team and a German police guard were murdered. Golda Meir then ok'd what is known as Operation Wrath of God, which was an undercover operation carried out by the Mossad, to kill the people responsible for the massacre, who were from the PLO and the Black September. Now, let's talk about the lead up to the Yom Kippur War. The Israeli intelligence couldn't say for sure if an attack was being planned by the surrounding Arab nations, but on Oct 5, 1973, Meir did receive notice that the Syrian forces were massing on the Golan Heights. Her advisers said that they would still have enough time, if needed, to gather the Israeli troops up to fight, but the general feeling in the country was there would not be an attack after the results of the Six-Day War. So although a resolution was passed giving Golda the OK to gather all of the troops together just in case, she didn't do it early enough. Soon, it was clear that there would be war. Golda met with Moshe Dayan who was Minister of Defense, and with General David Elazar. Dayan said there would not be war, so to only gather up the air force and two divisions. General Elazar said that Israel should mobilize all of her troops, plus launch a preemptive strike. Golda Meir did not launch a strike but did gather the troops. She was afraid to lose the US backing, which would certainly be lost if Israel was seen to be the first attacker. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger later made a famous statement, that if Israel had launched a preemptive strike, she would not have received “so much as a nail.” After the Yom Kippur War, Meir and her party were plagued with questions over the lack of preparation for the war. She resigned in April of 1974, succeeded by Yitzhak Rabin as prime minister. She died at the age of 80 from cancer in 1978. The women I talk about are our teachers. Our mentors. Prof. Benjamin Z. Kedar, Professor Emeritus of History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and former Vice-President of the Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities, talks to host Gilad Halpern about his newly published collection of essays about Chaim Weizmann. Prof. Weizmann was Israel's first president and leader of the World Zionist Organization throughout much of the pre-state period, and maintained an active career as a chemist in parallel to his statesmanship. Where do science and state affairs interact? If you ask Weizmann, almost everywhere.
