This show is called YOUR NUTRITION PRESCRIPTION because I believe in a personalized approach to nutrition and health. When figuring out Our Optimal Nutrition Strategy one of the factors that we need to consider is our genetics. Our genes do not control our health, but they do impact our response to certain nutritional states. For example, if you produce less folate genetically, your dietary folate requirements are going to be increased. Along with that, the co-factors that help folate to carry out its role in gene replication, neurotransmitter balance, and detoxification will also be increased given the lower capacity to produce folate.   If you have this gene variant and you naturally produce less folate and you don’t mindfully eat more folate in your diet, and you also don’t consume sufficient amounts of choline and B12, this is going to severely disrupt these functions and it could lead to increased rates of cancer, poor liver function, depression, and other problems that we will discuss on the show. Some people naturally do less of it and this seems to be one of the important driving factors in obesity and weight loss success. Protein is one of the key building blocks in our body and an adequate amount of protein is essential for proper growth and development.  Most people seemed to get confused about how much is enough and what the real side effects are of eating too much for too long.  When I was younger I followed some recommendations from bodybuilding.com community and articles that said I needed AT LEAST 1 gram per pound of body weight and often exceeded that by a long shot based on advice that was well-meaning but shorted sighted.  This high protein diet contributed to some digestive issues that I was able to improve dramatically simply by switching to a diet with lower protein content.  Now this isn't what happens to everyone, however, based on what I have learned about the human body, I believe that many people are consuming too much protein over too long of a period of time, which can lead to a range of downstream side effects. Propaganda is defined as is information that is not objective and is used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda. Propaganda seems to be rampant in the nutrition world and in this episode I want to talk about it. I will specifically discuss the documentary “What the Health”. There are many people and organizations that present nutrition information as educational, but are actually promoting an agenda and providing information that is false or misrepresented. I really don’t like this and I want to discuss it so that you can be better able to recognize it when it happens. Bottom line: everyone is different. There is no one diet for everyone.
