"The experience of being stuck is a pretty good place to be, I think, a lot of times in therapy and life." - Stephen Rowley
Koans challenge our assumptions. By presenting seemingly nonsensical questions, they dismantle our reliance on logic and open us to new perspectives. They bypass intellectual understanding, instead pointing us towards a direct experience of reality that transcends language. This process can be frustrating, dismantling our ego's need for control and certainty. However, by surrendering to the mystery, we embark on a transformative journey.Engaging with koans cultivates valuable qualities. Our intuition sharpens as we learn to understand beyond reason. We become more present, focusing intensely on the "here and now" as we grapple with the paradoxes presented. Finally, the disorientation caused by koans can foster compassion, allowing us to see the universality of human experience and connect with all beings on a deeper level. In essence, Zen koans are not about finding answers, but about experiencing a transformative process that leads to heightened awareness and a more compassionate understanding of ourselves and the world around us.Upcoming Programs This episode is a must-listen for coaches and anyone interested in the future of learning and development.Ready to take your coaching to the next level? On Being okay with Not Knowing...This is a recording from Just Be Like This Today! This is a daily invitation to grant yourself permission to drop all your other nagging ‘Musts' and ‘Shoulds' about self-improvement, personal development and living a virtuous life. Just enjoy this one cup of Living Wisdom, just choose this one thing and sit with it today.Trying to figure life out is like rummaging in a sack trying to pull a mystery object out, that you are looking for, without knowing what it is. Having a phone in your pocket means you never get to sit with a question and let it nag at you. You have become used to having instant answers on tap. You have normalised the abnormal. The recording is a short guided reflection on the necessity and power of Sitting with Questions, even ones that do not have ready answers. —there is a way that you can shape the hand of your grasping mind as if it knows what it is trying to grab and draw out. Sometimes the way you are holding a question is exactly what will make the answer evade your grasp. This is what the Zen Koan means: Not Knowing is Most Intimate. A Koan is in fact a tool used in the Zen tradition that poses a riddle or question, that is not meant to be solved. The work, if it can be called that, is done in the interstitial space of uncertainty.Sign up to my Substack: eyeswideopenlife.substack.comemail info@eyeswideopenlife.com
In this episode we are very pleased to have with us Dr. Neil Theise, author of, 'Notes on Complexity', A Scientific Theory of Connection, Consciousness and Being. Dr. Neil Theise is a professor of pathology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Through his scientific research, he has been a pioneer of adult stem cell plasticity and the anatomy of the human interstitium. Dr. Theise's studies in complexity theory have led to interdisciplinary collaborations in fields such as integrative medicine, consciousness studies, and science-religion dialogue. During the course of our conversation we discuss his early life and spiritual influences, being a generation of survivors from the Holocaust, being a body vs a group of cells as a Zen Koan, the Divine Mother, investigating the thingness of stuff and the relationship between Shamanism and Dark Matter... There is so much suffering going on today and we grab at all kinds of medicines to feel better. Some medicines give us temporary comfort, others relieve symptoms for a long while. And yet, we seldom pause to ask ourselves and explore what is the illness, really? What is the very nature of dis-ease itself. No matter how much medicine we take, even when once problem is gone, another pops up shortly, and the discomfort goes on and on. Is there a way to end this situation completely? Can we go to the root of our suffering, pull it out, and find true comfort and delight in all aspects of our lives? This wonderful Zen Koan explores the way to pass beyond the entangling vines of our difficulties and move into the light.

Most of us rush through the endless ‘to do' list of daily chores feeling distracted and impatient. How often do we really pay attention to the thing that's right in front of us, to the task at hand? In this episode of Optimist in Progress, Dr Drea Letamendi shares her insights on how to create moments of mindfulness as we fold laundry, chop carrots or do the dishes. By tuning in to those repetitive tasks, and connecting to the sensations of everyday activities, she explains, the small moments take on a new significance, creating a profound sense of gratitude, and enhancing our mental wellbeing. For more on Jon Kabat ZinnFor more on the Zen koan, Chop Wood, Carry Water A brief intro to Zen A definitive guide to Zen by Alan Watts - The way of Zen To get in touch with us, email: podcast@optimistdrinks.comFor more about the show visit optimistdrinks.com and click on the journal pages.Follow Optimist drinks @optimistdrinksFollow Dr Drea Letamendi @arkhamasylumdocFollow Tom Johnstone @tommyjohnstone
The early morning light lays on my face like a warm towel, I roll over to check the time. 7am on a friday, also my day off. A bouancy sways within as I make my way to the bathroom, the filling sound of my pee hitting the water in the toilette.“Bye babe!” I say, kissing my wife on the cheek. “Where are you going,” she responds. “I'm going to work out!”Driving that old cement road surrounded by KFC, Taco Bell and Walmart. Driving that road, that many time's, in the privacy of my own head I had said “god this road is ugly, I would hate to end up living over here..,” Driving this written off road somhting else peeked through from the other side. A welling up of energy in my abdomen, a connection to the fabric of the beauty and divinity off all life, even this. Even among this cemented altar to the consumerist gods the connection to truth and beauty was still present. Oh, but how are we to find the beauty in what's ugly, the strength in the weakness, the healing in the sickness and the sanity in the insanity? One of life's greatest paradoxes. In Zen Buddhism, we are encouraged to embrace this paradox. Many practices in Zen Buddhsim are designed to ignite this feeling of paradox in practiioners. The Zen Koan for isntance. A Koan is a phrase given from a Zen Teacher to a student. One of the most famouse Koans is “What's the sound of one hand clapping?” is there a logical answer to this? Koans are practiced by holding them in the feild of your open awareness during meditation, suddenly the truth is revealed when we let go of our logical minds and see what's true.“That was rude!” My voice and chest tighttend as my eyes squinted. “What… ?” my boss said, her arms crossing, protecting her chest. “I asked if you wanted a water bottle and you said ‘I have one' in a pissy voice…” Sounds like a small thing to get upset about, eh? Well I got upset about it only a couple weeks ago… A man that can see the humor of our little storylines, meditates and does a podcast on buddhism that also get's upset over somthing as small as someones response to his gesture of water bottle kindness? Yup… Being aware of our stories and struggles doesnt remove us from them.In closing I will leave you with this quote from Jack Kornfields A Path With Heart:“When the stories of our life no longer bind us, we discover within them something greater. We discover that within the very limitations of form, of our maleness and femaleness, of our parenthood and our childhood, of gravity on the earth and the changing of the seasons, is the freedom and harmony we have sought for so long. Our individual life is an expression of the whole mystery, and in it we can rest in the center of the movement, the center of all worlds.”― Jack Kornfield, A Path with Heart: A Guide Through the Perils and Promises of Spiritual LifeYes, I am aware that my episodes have been much shorter. But in keeping with what is truthful this is all that I had to say. Have a wonderful week! Bye.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-imperfect-buddhist/donations
If humanity were married to our nuclear arsenal we would have just celebrated our diamond 75th wedding anniversary. How have we responded? Much like in a real marriage: terror, insanity, grief and, eventually, indifference. Also, some pretty great songs and movies! Join the Meerkats as we party like it’s 1999, walk the dinosaur, and duck and cover our way through a “nucular” war-themed Zen Koan.
Life presents endless questions and contradictions that seem to have no answer. We go round and round trying to figure things out, creating strategies, going over the benefits and costs. And still a true solution can't be found. In a sense life is presenting us koans again and again. In Zen practice is an unanswerable question we are given to grapple with. When we run out of our ordinary means of approaching it, after we fail again and again, an entirely new way arises to practice with the koan so that the heart of the matter is revealed. And we are changed forever. Not only in the way we work with the koan, but the way in which we live our lives. Come listen to the podcast.
This conversation is part of a series exploring the personal journeys people have taken with a holistic approach to transformational practices integrating body, heart, mind and spirit. In this episode I speak with Layman Pascal about his journey. Topics covered are: the art of practice, yoga, Zen Koan practice, relationships helping you grow emotionally, how practice can help us navigate the chaos that is potentially coming more and more in the future, practices that use our sensory experience as a conduit for enriching our lives, how to train our minds by reading material we don't yet understand, making visual diagrams in order to help us coordinate out thoughts. If you are unfamiliar with the term kōan, then in short kōan means riddle or puzzle that Zen Buddhists use to help them unravel greater truths about the world and about themselves. And although at first glance the kōan may seem like an unsolvable intellectual paradox, it is in fact a tool used to cut into and then break through the egos intellectual barrier so as to breakup all preconceived notions of intellectual superiority which maybe preventing the student from perceiving the true nature awareness. What is the Sound of One Hand Clapping? The Sound of One Hand Clapping is a Japanese Zen kōan given to novices starting Zen training, the novice contemplates the meaning of the riddle, and the nature of the answer is intended to invoke a paradigm shift in the novices understanding of Zen.

"The Whole World Is Medicine, What Is The Illness?" is a Zen Koan for today's world. There is so much suffering, fear, and conflict that can be solved easily. We do not see that the pain we feel is due to the way we are responding to the never ending cycle of change. We do not see we are clinging to suffering, making it stronger, and that this can be easily changed. Why has the mystic and the natural world been intertwined with symbolic meaning and the path of awakening to a different way of perceiving life since the beginning of human experience? From the 1st of April 2020, Boyd Varty from Londolozi Game Reserve in South Africa realizes a life long dream as he goes into the wilderness alone for 40 days and 40 nights to try and answer that question from inside that experience. - Episode 30: Day 28 "Call me Crazy" You would be amazed at how far crocodiles move at night. I found myself following the distinctive track for about 2 kilometers. I've spent a lot of time in the bush veld, but in this experience by nature of the experience I have been taken deeper. I have the will and the mindset to find out where crocodiles go. To be immersed in patterns that otherwise seem random. This is an understanding of a certain individuality to each creature. Of course even deeper is the fact that naming anything takes you a little bit further away from it. Zen Koan. A glass of water on the table. The teacher asks what is that? The students give linear answers. The master picks up the glass and drinks, making the point of pure experience. From a spiritual point of view, the other truth is that mind changes out here. The thought load of future and past is replaced by an immediacy of attention. Mind recruits the body, it is in a creative response to the body. I say that because I honestly tend to run pretty anxious. This is how we used to be for many thousands of years. While we can't obviously live in trees in the wild, its worth noting that if we could most of us would be closer to enlightenment. There are really opportunities to questioning how we get off the progress train with nuance. We have to face the truth that not all progress is progress. Modern life ain't it all cracked up to be. It's certainly worth some of your capacity to innovate before you have kids and they become teenagers. Life architecture as an activism is a very engaging way to spend the blink of an eye we all get. Right now I'm reading two of the most beautiful books. Braiding Sweetgrass and Overstory. https://www.amazon.com/Braiding-Sweetgrass-Indigenous-Scientific-Knowledge/dp/1571313567 https://www.amazon.com/Overstory-Novel-Richard-Powers/dp/039363552X Both talk about the intelligence of plants. In Overstory, the trees start to call a total discordant group of people together. It shows how a forest is not a collection of trees but a living thing.
You would be amazed at how far crocodiles move at night. I found myself following the distinctive track for about 2 kilometers. I’ve spent a lot of time in the bush veld, but in this experience by nature of the experience I have been taken deeper. I have the will and the mindset to find out where crocodiles go. What is the sound of one hand clapping? Can you hear the sound? How much time do you think we spend trying to solve these kinds of riddles? In today's episode, Victor and Nicko talk about the purpose of a Zen koan and how it can enlighten us on how we all fall into rabbit holes trying to solve a riddle that doesn't exist in reality. So, how we can redirect our focus instead? Tune in and let us know what you learned from this koan! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zenstoicpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/zenstoicpodcast/support
In this Pandemic Devotion I present a different perspective on the Cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus intended this death in Jerusalem to be a dramatic event designed to snap his disciples out of their illusions about who they thought he was and what his Kingdom was. It was meant to reveal his true nature and our true nature. It is analogous to the function of the koan in Zen Buddhism. Perhaps it is easier on Christian ears to call it a parable rather than a koan, for the historical Jesus would never have heard the term koan. In doing symbolic actions Jesus was drawing upon the prophetic tradition of the Hebrew Scriptures. Prophets like Jeremiah and Ezekiel were known to do dramatic symbolic parabolic actions. Jesus planned for his dramatic – and traumatic - death to be a symbolic action intended to wake people up - his disciples and the people of Israel - to what he called the Kingdom of God. It was meant to usher in the Kingdom of Heaven, which is not an earthly kingdom but the spiritual awareness of the Presence of God here and now.

"No tomorrow. No today. No yesterday." ~Sheng-ts "Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.” ~Zen Proverb Today's Mind Bullet Monday takes us back...to the future. This subject matter is pulled directly from The Habit Factor®. Martin reads from the Epilogue sharing the story about the time his daughter, Eva (7), asked her mom, "When is the future created?" She then shared the question with Martin, who was left puzzled as though it were a Zen Koan. Ultimately, he shared the question on Facebook to which a friend responded, "Tomorrow! Tell Eva that the future is created tomorrow!" Gleaning insight shared by a great Zen master thousands of years ago, Martin realized the real answer. The true beauty, though, of the answer lies in the realization that it is our habits—NOW—regardless of our past, that plant the seeds of our future. With this realization we can and should use the NOW to forge the habits that will lead us to our ideal future. What is the sound of one hand clapping? Oddly enough, I am asked this question often. Having only one hand I guess I can understand this happening on some level. Being Buddhist adds and extra layer of magnetism to the phrase. Despite being one of the most quoted and well known Zen Koans in modern history, it is actually being said and asked incorrectly. The great Japanese Monk, writer, calligrapher, and Zen Master, Hakuin Ekaku (1685- 1768), originally asked, "Two hands clap and there is a sound, what is the sound of one hand?" The koan is, "What is the sound of one hand?" Now that is the question you want to be asking this one handed guy!! Thanks for listening! I invite you to share this podcast, offer a comment, or leave some feedback. Show Notes: Getting asked "what is the sound of one hand clapping" way to often. This famous Zen Koan is usually mis-quoted. The weird and cool of a one-handed life. Kristen and David explore the necessity of hope and how hope has been found in these past several months. Glass half empty? Glass half full? There's a glass! Also, a far-too-brief shout out to the extraordinary Village of people who have cared for us and inspired us. Too many names to name, but a few highlights are shared. Golly, you are all so beautiful. Finally, surely there is something from The Big Lebowski we can use as a Zen Koan to guide us in our search.

Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross latch onto the finer points of Bionic Commando. Pro-tip: There is no jump button. Instead, you must use your rad bionic arm to swing into the hidden bases of the Badds (NOT THE NAZIS) and rescue your mentor and life-mate Super Joe. As we creep closer to our 150th show, this episode is brought to you by the return of the Zen Koan .... which quickly devolves into rap videos and masturbation jokes. Many loves for Daredevil, All Nighter, Journey Into Mystery, The Stuff of Legend, Generation Hope, and Power Girl. Not many loves for talksploitation comics and the death of fun. Many shenanigans including several trips to the MyTube, followed by FriendFace and BookSpace. Also we need a damn window in our studio. Or at the very least, a donkey with a box fan attached to it who can mill about the house spreading its cool donkey breeze. As always, leave your comments or picks on and if you like the show.
