I’m Zack Miller, editor in chief of Tearsheet. The following was produced by Tearsheet Studios. We worked with Wave, a financial software company for entrepreneurs and small businesses, to create a three part podcast series on what micro businesses and solopreneurs really need now from their banks, financial service providers, and financial software. It’s never a simple time for small business owners. They live and breathe cashflow. Many function pretty much hand to mouth, so any disruption -- let alone the pandemic we’re navigating through -- any disruption can really challenge an entrepreneur. I, for one, wouldn’t like to see a world with all big box retailers, faceless corporations, hawking me throwaway stuff and disposable experiences. I think the crisis brought out the fact that small businesses are really important parts of our cities, towns, and communities. If they suffer, we all suffer. Kirk Simpson, is the CEO of Wave, a provider of free accounting software for entrepreneurs. He lives and breathes what micro businesses deal with -- they’re his customers. So while he tracked the struggles of these folks, he also watched as many survived and thrived. It was also a time that a lot of people set out on their own to follow their own entrepreneurial dreams.
Some people dip their toes in the pool of support offered to others. Tony Robinson OBE dives into the deep end and has been a long vocal campaigner for freelancers, micro-businesses, and (more recently) those excluded by Government support during the Covid pandemic. What drives him on? How can freelancers, and other business owners, help each other? How would Tony's business world differ from the one we're in now? All these and more are discussed in this week's podcast. About Tony Robinson OBE Tony Robinson OBE is the Micro Business Champion, multiple business owner, #PayIn30Days Campaigner, Co-Founder of the Annual #MicroBizMatters Day and Movement, Co-founder of the Micro Business Awards UK, Founder of the SFEDI Group, Chair of Yorkshire in Business Limited and Patron of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank. Tony has been awarded an OBE for services to small firms and two Lifetime Achievement Awards for Enterprise. He was the National Enterprise Network's Enterprise Support Champion 2019. The anthology looks at the black experience in the U.K., primarily of West Indian immigrants in the 1970s and ‘80s. It’s called Small Axe , a reference to an African proverb that says, “If you are the big tree, we are the small axe,” and that you may remember from the Bob Marley song. I’ve seen the first two movies, and so far, it’s astounding. The first one, which came out last Friday, is Mangrove , and it tells the true story of the “Mangrove Nine,” a group of black Londoners who were tried in 1970 for inciting a riot, and whose acquittal resulted in the first official acknowledgement of “racial hatred” by the police. The Mangrove was a Trinidadian restaurant that became a touchpoint for the immigrant community, and was constantly harassed and raided by the police, leading to protests. The film is an

In this week's episode Lucinda is joined by Rob Kerr, the author of the forthcoming book, 'Project Future: 6 Steps to Success as Your Own Boss'. Discussing how to have the confidence to shape your future, Rob talks us through the number of practical models the book contains, and how they can positively impact your existing career, or energise a new direction. Furthermore, how all change begins by instilling a sense of confidence within ourselves. KEY TAKEAWAYS The main impact of COVID is that businesses are now working with a wide range of unknowns. Indeed, changes planned for the future are suddenly being rapidly adopted and fast-tracked. When considering the place in the world that your business will occupy, there are things to consider: Examine your openness to change, your mind-set in this field, and a self-evaluation of your career to date. Look at the “impact factor”, the effects that will be felt by those dependent on you both financially and emotionally, such as family or other dependants. Certainly, if we wish to think about starting our own independent HR careers now, we must consider the problems we wish to solve, who we are solving them for, and why you are the person to do it. Laying solid foundations, recognising our areas of expertise, and developing in our current roles whenever possible, will allow us, at any stage in our careers, to shape our own futures and build a better destiny for ourselves. BEST MOMENTS 'The main issue that HR professionals say is holding them back is a lack of confidence' 'Small steps and improvements are what help us to grow, more than any kind of radical shift' ‘I'm a big believer that change brings opportunity' ‘Being clear on what you want to do, will help convince somebody to say yes' VALUABLE RESOURCES Host of The HR Uprising Podcast, Lucinda Carney, is also the founder and CEO of Actus Software, where you can find additional free HR Resources: https://actus.co.uk/free-performance-management-resources/ The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group Change Superhero Resources Book: How To Be A Change Superhero - by Lucinda Carney Free Change Toolkit: www.changesuperhero.com Latest Performance Management Blog ABOUT THE GUEST Rob Kerr is a crackerjack at asking questions. I get asked the same question a lot: "Tell me the name of an organization you think really has achieved Predictable Success." I always answer the same way: "OK, but you'll likely never have heard of them." That's because the most exciting, innovative, focussed, joyous organizations that get into (and stay in) Predictable Success aren't the behemoths that we all know. Instead, they're organizations - businesses, not-for-profits, cause-based NGO's - who, unless you live in geographical proximity to them or operate in the same market as them, you'd never know they existed. It's one of the undiluted delights of what I do that I get to meet and work with these organizations, and the outstanding people who lead them, every single day. I met one such leader, and his outstanding business, when I stepped of the airplane (yes, this was in the before times) in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where I spent two eye-opening days with Behfar Jahanshahi, CEO and founder of Interworks, as he led his outstanding, global team through their annual conference. As soon as I heard Behfar deliver his keynote I knew I wanted to bring his personal story, his leadership philosophy, and the remarkable growth principles behind Interworks to the Predictable Success tribe, and last week, I was able to sit down with him and explore all of that, and more. Enjoy and learn from a truly remarkable Predictable Success leader. p.s. Behfar's closing explanation of how and why he has built Interwork's 'giving back' program is particularly outstanding. Don't miss it.
Olly Belcher joined Purposely Podcast to talk about her founder story and her absolute dedication to helping people living in poverty in India. She talks about how fatherly influence (as well as personal invite from Mother Teresa) led her to dedicate her career to helping people living in poverty in West Bengal. Her father's career in India led to many bed-time stories focused the wonders and mystique of India to a young impressionable Olly. We go deep into her founder story at the same time reflecting on the charities (her staff in West Bengal) 'inspirational' response to COVID-19. We also delve into her ability to chronically overachieve, this included her University years where she gained a first class honours degree in Geography and a distinction in her Masters degree both from Oxford University. Olly then joined the World Bank in Washington DC where, amongst other achievements, she was awarded the World Bank Youth Innovation Fund. Her time at the World Bank was followed by a move to London where she worked for Accenture Strategy and also helped prepare the 5 year strategy for Accenture Development Partnerships. Back to her founder story… starting the charity Shivia in December 2008 Olly has been the Chief Executive since 2010. It was a brave move, not only was she giving up a great opportunity at the World Bank (a job that paid well and was secure with great prospects) it was also the time of the global financial crisis. These things did not phase Olly though and she has no regrets about the move she made or the life philosophy it has given her... 'there is never a perfect time to do something, you just need to trust your instincts and follow your passion' So what does the charity do and what is Olly's role? Shivia works with some of the poorest communities in West Bengal, India and its mission is to empower them to create livelihoods, boost income and inspire permanent change. Poultry farming is their ‘flagship' programme launched in 2011. It provides the tools and training (the ‘toolkit‘) for families living in poverty to start a small enterprise from home by raising chickens and selling the produce. You will hear how Olly has become a skilled but reluctant fundraiser. She also forms Shivia's overall strategy and works hard to support operations. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

Rob Kearney says that the domestic rugby season could begin again very soon. The Ireland legend was speaking to Dermot & Dave this morning, where he revealed that plans are in place for members of the Leinster squad to return to the training ground later this month. Kearney said that the team will return to training in groups of 4, to do some socially distant pre-season fitness work as the team waits for approval from the Government, IRFU and World Rugby to resume games. Rob was on speaking about his new business Bua. It is a web-app for connecting consumers to trainers for group fitness classes outdoors. Backed by Google start-ups, London Sport and professional athletes, Bua Fit attracted investment from all over the world late last year. Bua Fit had to close their outdoor model with Covid-19 and the team had to think very quickly in order to stay in business. Bua means victory in Irish so their mission is to improve people’s lives by always making them healthier and happier, the infinite lifestyle is what the Bua brand believes in. This made their pivot an easy decision to help both sides of the marketplace in a crucial time for consumers and trainers. Bua Online launched, which is connecting consumers to trainers for LIVE group classes in a compliant training space. Bua Fit are one of the safest solutions in the market right now, this has resulted in them doing business in Ireland, Spain and Canada since they launched 6 weeks ago.

Lord Distinguished Scholar and Professor of Marketing at the School of Management at Boston University. CB received his PhD in Marketing from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management in 1984. Before joining Boston University, he was on the faculty at the Goizueta Business School, Emory University. In this episode, the following topics are discussed: University of Pittsburg’s Center for sustainable business to bridge academia and the private sector Sustainability generalist — positional the role within an organization Thought leadership — or curating meetings within companies to find linkages — such as the link between HR and sustainability Sustainability and marketing, investor relations, and procurement Creating sustainability ambassadors within and organization — taking ownership of sustainability Employees are yearning to find a sense of meaning Three phase path to sustainability ownership: incubate is when the CEO and executive team comes together finds common ground regarding sustainability, to entice employees or get them engaged with sustainability initiatives, and entrench means acting in a sustainable way becomes routine. Reporting progress is important as a means to inspire employees Employees must be empowered through training: incentives, promotions, fulfillment, celebration A company’s purpose is almost always linked to sustainability Expanding ownership means it is not “our company”, instead it is “our planet”. When an organization has a sense of purpose, it comes to life Marks and Spencer documents sustainability knowledge Culture and strategy must work in tandem Intent without the ability to mobilize employees makes it difficulty to make sustainability goals succeed Many people want to work for a higher purpose, not solely financial Shared understanding of the meaning of sustainability is important for each person in the organization Goals must be clearly defined and articulated Sustainability must engage all parts of an organization Unilever is the third most looked up company on LinkedIn after Google and Apple — Unilever is also a sustainability leader NOTES Book order info: Small Actions, Big Difference Center for Sustainable Business Small Actions Big Difference ABOUT PHILIP BEERE Philip is host of Corporate Sustainability; the podcast that explores companies and people who inspire innovation, improvement, and sustainable business practices through purpose-driven missions and initiatives. Joseph Malaby Dent (30 August 1849 – 9 May 1926) was the British book publisher who gave the world the Everyman's Library series. After a short, unsuccessful career as an apprentice printer he took up bookbinding, and shortly thereafter founded J. M. Dent and Company, in 1888, publishing the works of Lamb, Goldsmith, Austen, Chaucer, and Tennyson among others. Printed in short runs on handmade paper, these books enjoyed some success, but it wasn't until the Temple Shakespeare series, launched in 1894, that Dent hit the big time. Ten years later he began planning what became known as the Everyman's Library, a canon of one thousand classics, attractively, but practically, produced pocket-sized books sold for a shilling each. To meet demand, Dent built the Temple Press. Publication of the series began in 1906; 152 titles were issued in the first year. They were hugely popular. 'Small, lame, tight-fisted, and apt to weep under pressure,' Dent's ungovernable passion was, says critic Hugh Kenner, for bringing books to the people. He remembered when he'd longed to buy books he couldn't afford. Yes, you could make the world better. He even thought cheap books might prevent wars." I met with renowned book historian Professor Johathan Rose to discuss J.M.Dent, and to find out why the Everyman's Library series was so successful.
