From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda's school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga. Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students' expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire' whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.” Annie also reveals  her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie? A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. My guest today is Anne (or Annie) Carpenter. Anne is a singer, photographer and I would add a beautiful writer, plus a new kindred spirit! I've heard Anne sing and was moved deeply. Although she grew up in a family of singers, was immersed in a choral mindset from middle school through college, I was surprised to learn that it's only been about ten years since Annie stepped into singing professionally. Her honesty about the career choices that didn't line up, her gratitude for all the people who lifted her up and encouraged her to trust both herself and her voice more fully, comes through in our conversation. It's an honor to shine light on this humble, gracious, woman of wonder,  curiosity and compassion. Check out the show notes for a link to Anne's beautiful website, IG and FB accounts to see where she is performing next. I've also included a link for a Living Music Event at the Westchester Collaborative Theater in Ossining, NY this month, fusing theater and music, where Anne will be the featured vocal artist. Even though we didn't discuss that in our conversation, I'd love to help promote this unique event. We just got our tickets for opening night on May 10th and hope to see you there!  Enjoy the podcast! Welcome to Episode #54 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Vera, a yoga teacher from Brunei, was so fun as we took a really honed in on what Universal Yoga really is. I hope that this conversation made you curious about how Universal Yoga can come from within, while still honoring the anatomical and scientific approach of the body. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about Universal Yoga, and the difference between being a yoga teacher and a yoga practitioner, then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Chek Lee Kong (Vera) Chek Lee Kong is a yoga teacher and studio owner in Brunei. She is the owner of Truharmony Yoga Studio in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. She teaches Hatha yoga (200hrs Certified Vikasa Yoga), Vinyasa Yoga- Fit Flow Fly (300hrs Bryce Yoga), and Universal Yoga (200hrs Certified). When the perfect opportunity arose, she renovated a space which is now Truharmony, located at Gadong Central in Brunei. Vera has also studied with dozens of yoga teachers around the world and completed so many workshops with Kino McGregor, Dylan Werner, Jason Crandell, Annie Carpenter, Sri Dharma Mittra, Tiffany Chruikshank, and more! What to expect in the Yoga In Brunei episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast What really peaked my interest was her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in Universal Yoga. Universal Yoga is something I've never heard of before, and I was grateful that Vera took time to unravel how she first came to know about Universal Yoga and what Universal yoga is. Created and taught by Andrey Lappa. Universal Yoga has set sequences based on a highly scientific and anatomical approach.Yet, she says that Universal Yoga comes from within. The principle of Universal yoga is to always be awake and and to be conscious. It turns out that the founder of Universal Yoga is actually an engineer as well, so his attention to detail, anatomy, degrees of motion and movement is truly incredible. We talked also about how Vera— very recently— burned her legs very badly and has had to recover from this injury and return to her yoga practice and to teaching. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Brunei episode? What is Universal Yoga? Yoga that comes from within, not without What an engineer can bring to yoga as a teacher Being a yoga teacher is different from a yoga practitioner Recovering from badly burned legs and coming back to yoga Connect with Vera https://www.instagram.com/verayoga/ https://www.instagram.com/truharmony_yogastudio/ Want more? When Annie Carpenter mentioned this to me, it got me curious about other areas that bring us there. You see, Annie has this gift; she’s been teaching for a while and, in my opinion, is one of the titans. She has this special way of inviting you into your body without taking you fully out of the experience. She balances this fine line with grace and ease. It’s truly something special to see. I am so glad to have her on the show this week. What I loved about our convo is how easy it flowed. We’ve circled around one another in SF, and she’s always been someone I love and respect. Annie is known to be the teacher of teachers. Annie shines some light on her background, telling us that going to a rehabilitation center after falling into recreational drugs ignited her passion for yoga. She describes that while working as a professional dancer in New York City, yoga was her way to relax; she wouldn’t have been able to work without it. Annie was a student of the late Martha Graham and danced for her internationally acclaimed company.  Nathalie feels that the importance of the yoga teacher is becoming lost as yoga evolves. Annie believes that it’s difficult to have perspective on self, no matter what we are doing. We then hear about Annie’s teaching style. She's studied with Many Ezraty, Annie Carpenter and she has taught yoga all over Los Angeles. She is currently on a sabbatical from teaching while she raises two children but plans on heading back to the studio very soon to teach again. We talk about yoga, her respect for the internal and philosophical aspects of the practice. We talk about her overwhelming love and adoration for Maty, we talk about Cal Newport, being still and the impact of social media on the yoga community. Yes, please be that dot, but remember that this circle is to support you when you need to round up and be reminded none of us do it alone. Plus, there's just something really sacred and soul connecting when we Circle Us as seekers and consciousness contributors.Where I join the circle...Allow me to help remind you of who you really are and why YOU matter. How? Explore my page, SEE what's available and allow yourself to be SEEN | An Experience of Presence. We are all creatives by nature, but along the way, I found myself in the certificate club. Here are the credentials, but mostly, it was about the teachers that had SEEN me, and helped me to remember it was best to continue being me. Emily, a Toronto native, was first introduced to yoga in New York City where she was studying theater and the art of becoming an anxiety-ridden insomniac! At the time, the thought of Yoga meant slowing down, which meant terrifying and seemed better suited for “hippies” and “tea people”, not she! But after accidentally stumbling into her first class, she was shocked to discover that this “slowing down” was not only the most challenging sweaty work-out she’d ever had, but for the first time in ages, she felt calm. Excited and inspired to learn more, she began her study and practice of Yoga.   Emily completed one of Moksha Yoga’s first 800-hour teacher trainings in Thailand where she was lucky enough to study with Susi Hately Aldous, Ted Grand and Jessica Robertson, Frank Boccio, and more. It was on this trip that Emily, Deena and Jess planted the seed of a distant dream to one day open Moksha Yoga LA…   Cut to: Years later. Emily now lives in LA, teaches Yoga privately all over LA, is the creator of Yoga Theater for Kids (which she taught in schools, and foster youth programs throughout Los Angeles), has just finished performing her LA debut of her One-woman show…when Deena said something like “Ok, so are you ready to open up Moksha Yoga LA yet now, or what??”, to which she said yes and the rest is history.   Emily is grateful to her teachers both present and past such as Annie Carpenter, Kia Miller, Bryan Kest, Gurmukh, Liz Olesky, Jasmine Lieb, the Robertson Family tree, her wonderful meditation mentors, Jeanne Pisano and Ken McLeod and to her students, the greatest teachers of all. Emily also has a passion for philanthropic work. Within the first two years of being open, Moksha Yoga LA raised over $160,000 for charities around the world. Founder of Sweat for Change has raised $115,000 for Little Kids Rock

Join Anna K. as she interviews Larry Thraen... Yoga discovered me when I was training for marathons. In order to keep my body well despite an intense weekly running regimen, I intuitively combined stretching with my breath. Later, I attended my first yoga class in NYC and I discovered that I had been doing yoga all along.  Known in Nicaragua as Yoga Larry, I'm a Vinyasa style powerful flow instructor who has spent the majority of my teaching career in Nicaragua. Since 1998 I studied extensively in Los Angeles under Vinnie Marino, Bryan Kest, Annie Carpenter, Steve Ilg, Mark Blanchard and Kathryn Budig. I teach from life experience and incorporate traditional wisdom of the Tibetan Diamond Sutras, A Course in Miracles, and transpersonal psychology. I lead several international yoga teacher trainings, retreats and workshop and continue to further myself through continued wellness education. When not running, mountain biking; surfing; or traveling, I may be found 'flying' acro partners throughout Houston and searching for 'hole in the wall' eats. See more here!
