Our season finale is an actual play episode featuring an international ensemble of DnD enthusiasts from around the globe. We share the first 45 minutes of our playing the OSR adventure module, Castle Brookmere by Izegrim Creations. Castle Brookmere is a reimaging of the classic Endless Quest book Return to Brookmere. Special thank you to Monument Studios for the music and sound effects featured during this adventure.
From Putin to Qadhafi, from Mohammed bin Salman to Trump… our current era of Enduring Disorder is filled with many Tyrants and Tyrant-wannabes. But why do Tyrants tend to seek Disorder rather than Order? The answer appears to lie in Tyrants' Endless Quest for Regime Security. Dictators have a marked predilection to put their own desire to cling to power in the short-and medium-term above all other considerations – even if that means deliberately making their countries' economies and militaries inefficient or willfully spreading Disorder around the globe. To discuss the deep connections between Tyranny and Disorder, we are joined by Marcel Dirsus, Jason's old Oxford chum, former Libya-Analysis LLC contractor, and author of ‘How Tyrants Fall: And How Nations Survive'. Marcel is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University and a member of the Standing Expert Committee on Terrorism and Interior Security at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. Jason and Marcel dig into the psychology of tyrannical leaders and the structural factors that push tyrants to behave as they do. They explore the concept of the ‘selectorate' — i.e. who really matters in a given society to keep the ruler in power. They explain how tyrannies have a much smaller and more elite ‘selectorate' than democracies… this explains why pleasing these very few elites in the immediate term is the key variable required to keep dictators in power… and since those few pillars of regime support might flip at any moment, tyranny is actually an incredibly brittle form of government… and can actually collapse at any moment if its support pillars are removed In the Ordering the Disorder section, Marcel and Jason urge democratic nations to realize the true extent of weakness prevalent in most dictatorships and target tyrants' henchmen to help create a more Ordered globe. There's no shortage of self judgments we can make that don't make us feel good, and self sabotage is up there with the best.It provides a talking point for countless therapy sessions, and gives us plenty of ammunition for those moments when we're trying to rationalize our actions. So what is self sabotage and why do we do it? The good news is that, like all things, it has an evolutionary function.Thom explains in more detail in this episode, releasing us from the need to explain ourselves in the process.Episode Highlights:[03:32] Mood Changes[05:03] Breaking Free from the Habit of Constant Mental Activity[07:08] The Endless Quest for Something Better [09:16] Dreams as Stress Release[11:02] Dreams and Realities[12:48] Dreaming Within Dreams[14:29] The Relationship Between Consciousness and Suffering[16:11] It's All Part of a Learning Curve[18:40] The Interplay Between Capability and Suffering[20:41] Pursuing Happiness Amidst Discomfort[22:35] Thoughts and Bodily Functions[24:49] The Deep Inner Workings of the Human Mind[26:28] Enjoyable Crying Episodes[28:58] You're Going to Be So Happy from Your Sadness[30:26] Attaining Satisfactory Sadness[31:54] Embrace Vedic Meditation to Seek Happiness[33:55] The Suffering Experiment[35:27] Don't-do-it Lectures Don't Work[37:17] Feeling Good All the Time[38:51] Letting Go of Suffering[40:24] All That Is[42:25] Breaking the Cycle of Self-Sabotage[44:21] Expose Yourself to a Deeper UnderstandingUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.comhttps://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

It's almost Christmas and what could be more festive than trying to escape from a vampire's castle? In this bonus episode we see the return of the Endless Quest series, the Dungeons and Dragons spin off product intended to act as an introduction to the franchise for younger readers. The last one we covered was very poor indeed but Dungeons and Dragons has changed a lot since the mid 80s and maybe, just maybe Wizards of the Coast can rectify the mistakes made by the earlier series. If you're an Illini fan (and, if you're reading this, chances are that you are), we don't need to explain further. Few programs have been "cursed" the way Illini basketball has. Who else has the scars that are results of having two significant NCAA tournament rules changed due to their team being crushed by easily correctable circumstances? Illini Guy Larry Smith author of the article one can find on IlliniGuys.com called "The endless quest for R-E-S-P-E-C-T" talks about the rough road the Illini have been on since the early 80s. This is a tour de force through the rough moments of Illini history and how they are poised to gain respect back after a long journey. Remember to subscribe at IlliniGuys.com! You Ought To Do A Story About Me: Addiction, an Unlikely Friendship, and the Endless Quest for Redemption is the heartbreaking, timeless, and redemptive story of the transformative friendship binding a fallen-from-grace NFL player and a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist who meet on the streets of New Orleans, offering a rare glimpse into the precarious world of homelessness and the lingering impact of systemic racism and poverty on the lives of NOLA’s citizens. Author Ted Jackson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and the author of YOU OUGHT TO DO A STORY ABOUT ME, an unlikely tale that began thirty years ago when a homeless man boasted about playing in three Super Bowls. The story was true. Beginning in 1984, Ted started photographing assignments for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans and globally, exploring politics, environmental issues, conflict and the indomitable human spirit. He has appeared on CBS, ABC, CNN, Fox News, NBC and NPR. He and his wife live in Covington, Louisiana. This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we take a look at HeartQuest. Back in 1982, TSR launched a series of Dungeons & Dragons-based interactive novels called Endless Quest. Aimed at children, they were an immediate success. In 1983, they followed up with HeartQuest, which introduced romance into the formula and courted women readers. It was a dismal failure. Why? Well, for the answer to that, you'll have to listen to the podcast... * * * Hang out with us on the Vintage RPG Discord - Stu's started setting up one-shot Call of Cthulhu sessions and that's the place to get in on the action. This week, we're talking TSR's Endless Quest gamebooks. They're like Choose Your Own Adventure, but with D&D and, well, boring. Sort of! Maybe we're being too hard on them. We dig in to the first few, the history of the series, the unusual places it goes and there is, perhaps, a surprising turn-around of opinion. We learn a lot about ourselves on this podcast, folks. We're already getting excited for Halloween (what, its after Labor Day) so we've got a couple games we're excited about. Stu finally got a hold of the rulebook for Mummy: The Resurrection, which tickles his funny bone. Meanwhile, Hambone is amped for Horrified, a new board game from Ravensburger. * * * Join us on the Vintage RPG Patreon for more roleplaying fun and surprises! By popular demand (with some listeners anyway), this episode features another lecture from Steve Hayward's periodic series for the William F. Buckley Program at Yale, this time on the topic of “The Endless Quest for Social Equality.” This talk ranges widely from the contentions over income inequality that Thomas Piketty's book ignited into the current bonfire of Bernie Sanders's socialist vanity... The Wealth Standard – Empowering Individual Financial Independence
Alongside our basic need for shelter, food, and clothing, a person's yearning for freedom and liberty has always been present no matter what era and time. Lawrence Reed, President of the Foundation for Economic Education, talks about freedom and capitalism. He believes that each individual that comes into this world has the right to do anything that's peaceful. He recounts what brought him to this quest and perspective which was the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, and explains the philosophy of capitalism which he believes is the economic component of a free society. He also relates the importance of understanding freedom on different aspects of life and how everyone will benefit from it. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Panel: AJ O’Neal Joe Eames Jesse Sanders Special Guest: Sean Hunter In this episode, the panel talks with Sean Hunter who is a software developer, speaker, rock climber, and author of “Aurelia in Action” published by Manning Publications! Today, the panelists and Sean talk about Aurelia and other frameworks. Check it out! Show Topics: 0:00 – Advertisement: KENDO UI 0:38 – Joe: Hello! Our panelists are AJ, Jesse, myself, and our special guest is Sean Hunter (from Australia)! What have you been doing with your life and what is your favorite movie? 1:45 – Guest talks about Vegemite! 2:20 – Guest: I was in the UK and started using Aurelia, which I will talk about today. I have done some talks throughout UK about Aurelia. Also, the past year moved back to Australia had a baby son and it’s been a busy year. Writing a book and being a new parent has been hard. 3:22 – Panel: Tell us the history of Aurelia, please? 3:31 – Panel: Is it like jQuery, React, Vue or what? 3:44 – Guest: Elevator pitch – Aurelia is a single-page app framework! It’s most similar to Vue out of those frameworks; also, similarities to Ember.js. 4:30 – Guest goes into detail about Aurelia. 6:15 – Panel: It sounds like convention over configuration. 6:42 – Guest: Yes that is correct. 7:21 – Panel: Sounds like there is a build-step to it. 7:39 – Guest: There is a build-step you are correct. You will use Webpack in the background. 9:57 – The guest talks about data binding among other things. 10:30 – Guest: You will have your app component and other levels, too. 10:37 – Panel: I am new to Aurelia and so I’m fresh to this. Why Aurelia over the other frameworks? Is there a CLI to help? 11:29 – Guest: Let me start with WHY Aurelia and not the other frameworks. The style that you are using when building the applications is important for your needs. In terms of bundling there is a CUI and that is a way that I prefer to start my projects. Do you want to use CSS or Webpack or...? It’s almost a wizard process! You guys have any questions about the CLI? 14:43 – Panel: Thanks! I was wondering what is actually occurring there? 15:25 – Guest: Good question. Basically it’s that Aurelia has some built-in conventions. Looking at the convention tells Aurelia to pick the Vue model by name. If I need to tell the framework more information then... 17:46 – Panel: I think that for people who are familiar with one or more framework then where on that spectrum would Aurelia fall? 18:20 – Guest: It’s not that opinionated as Ember.js. 19:09 – Panel: Talking about being opinionated – what are some good examples of the choices that you have and how that leads you down a certain path? It doesn't matter if you were a jock or a nerd, a boy or a girl, or lived in the city, the burbs, or the country - all kids in the 80s had one thing in common: "choose your own adventure" books. Sure, those four words might be trademarked and just one brand, but that style of storytelling was all over the place in the 80s. From the ubiquitous Choose Your Own Adventure titles to Time Machine, Twistaplot, Pick a Path, Find Your Fate, Lone Wolf, Fighting Fantasy, and Endless Quest . . . the list was seemingly endless. And it's Endless Quest that we're talking about today since author Matt Forbeck and Candlewick Entertainment have revived the series and brought the format back from near extinction. The first wave of four books in the series focuses on four of the Dungeons & Dragons archetype characters: Fighter, Wizard, Cleric, and Thief. The books target younger readers and are a great introduction to both D&D and game books in general. On this episode, I talk to Matt about his history with game books, how writing a branching storyline with multiple pathways presents unusual creative challenges, what the new (and upcoming) Endless Quest books have in store for us, and his experiences writing for various established franchises versus original worlds.
It begins with a pizza joke, naturally (00:30). The guys talk about the Choose Your Own Adventure: House of Danger board game (01:15) and Stu breaks down the basics (01:46). They discuss the stupidity of group decision making (03:00) and where to get it (05:00). Conversation turns to the main event: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness (05:39). Stu admits to not being a TMNT fan (05:54) and Hambone sketches out the basic history of the franchise (06:20). Stu talks about the (07:09) original TMNT comic book series, which Palladium Books licensed almost immediately for an RPG (07:53). Stu recounts how Palladium's license of Robotech led to the development of the TMNT cartoon and, ironically, the downfall of the TMNT RPG line (08:43). Stu talks a bit about the (complicated) TMNT RPG system, which is a component of Palladium's Megaversal house system (10:55). He falls into the trap of trying to explain the Megaversal system and eventually gets to TMNT's juicy center: the mutation rules and the After the Bomb campaign setting. (14:40). The guys talk about the rarity of the book (15:53), in particular the very first edition of TMNT and Other Strangeness that contained controversial mental illness rules (16:13). Cowabunga. Hambone gets excited about Pocket Dungeon Quest (17:20) and he walks through its charms (cloth map!)(17:45) See ya next time! (21:22) * Clarification: We tend to use “Choose Your Own Adventure” as a catch-all term for pick-your-path game books but, like iPods and Kleenex, that's actually a brand name for the series published by Bantam Books in the 80s and 90s. The Marvel and Dungeons & Dragons gamebooks Hambone mentions were published by TSR (the latter known as the Endless Quest series). Correction: Stu is totally wrong, TMNT did not start off as a Daredevil pitch, it was a conscious parody of Daredevil (and also Ronin, Cerebus and New Mutants, apparently) from the get-go.
Matt Forbeck is the New York Times best seller author who has just published four Endless Quest books based in D&D Forgotten Realms. Matt Forbeck has been writing professionally since 1989 and has a plethora of books on his back. Probably so many he would not be able to carry them all if he had one issue of each on his back for real. Now he has written four Endless Quest books (thus far) and I just had to find out more about them.
Looks like the new Endless Quest Books have released. More importantly, I talk about fantasy settings and how much fantasy is right for me - and would like to know how much is right for you. Full episode info and show notes: www.wearelookingsideways.com For episode 006 of the Looking Sideways podcast, I paid a visit to legendary freerider Xavier de le Rue at his Verbier home. Where to start with Xavier? Universally considered one of our greatest freeriders, he began his career racing boardercross, picking up four world titles. Then he switched his attention to freeriding, winning three Freeride World Tour titles. He followed this by embarking upon some of the greatest and most ambitious snowboarding expeditions ever, hitting up Antarctica and Svalbard, among others. And along the way, he found the time to create era-defining film parts, produce countless films and win endless plaudits from the snowboarding and adventure media. The thing about Xavier though, as you’ll hear while listening to our conversation, is that there's much more to him than one of the most storied CVs in the history of snowboarding. He's a very intelligent, very focussed and insightful individual, who has constantly been driven by evolution and the need to progress, whether that’s through his various projects or his entrepreneurial involvement with at least five different companies. Now, as he explained during our fascinating conversation, Xavier’s next evolution is about where he takes his snowboarding as he hits 40. Thanks to Scott Nixon (www.scottnixon.co.uk) for post-production help and Matt Ward (linguistine.com) for the theme tune.

Elexa's boyfriend of 8 years refused to have sex with her. Listen to why she thinks he couldn't give a lady what she wanted. It might be why she's struggled to claim that elusive female orgasm. My good friend Elexa got real, telling me why our brief dating history was as brief as it was. "I remember wanting to punch you in the face." Hear why she decided we'd "just be friends." Billy gets an opportunity to give her advice as well. What's proper long distance texting etiquette…if you're not a couple yet? Ever buy a dildo but it just didn't feel right? Now you can make your own customized 3D-printed dildo. Check it out at www.dildo-generator.com. Billy gives the low-down on buying jeans with a man-booty and curvy hips.
