Jeff Johnson understands the experience of franchisees because he has more than 35 years of experience in the industry. Jeff founded the Franchise Research Institute in 2002 to provide franchise executives with data on franchisee opinions using science-based research methodology. FRI is the original auditor of franchisee opinions. Today, their clients include many leading brands in various franchise business industries. Jeff's entrepreneurship began when he left a Fortune 500 company to invest in a franchise at the age of 29. Jeff was Schlotzsky's New Franchisee of the Year in 1985. As a multi-unit owner, he made the national Top 20 rankings regularly. As an Area Developer, he opened 19 franchises in 10 years, earning him an award for Area Developer Excellence. He has served on the Franchise Advisory Council (FAC), the Franchise Marketing Council (FMC), and the Presidents Council. From these experiences, he learned that franchisees often do not share important insights with executives out of fear of retribution. This lack of open, honest communication can prevent a franchise brand from attaining its true potential. He founded the Franchise Research Institute because he saw the need for an independent survey that goes “behind the curtain” and asks crucial questions of franchisees (while guaranteeing confidentiality). The FranSurvey© obtains critical information valuable to the company and to franchisee candidates.

Are you a business owner, franchisor, or franchisee looking for ways to grow your business? Are you looking for tips and tricks to be more successful? Then this week's podcast episode is for you. Tune in as Jordan Levine, Chief Operating Officer of Sola Salons shares his advice for achieving success in business and in life. In a career spanning 20+ years, Jordan has helped lead great brands to even greater heights. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Jordan joined the team at Cold Stone Creamery in the early growth days. It was during his 10-year tenure here that Jordan earned his “real world MBA” – as a franchisee and Area Developer. From there he took his talents to another well-known National brand, Massage Envy where he led domestic and later international operations and grew the brand from 500 to well over 1200 locations! When the entrepreneurial bug bit again, Jordan then built a successful independent franchise consulting practice where he helped grow many well-known franchise brands. Building this consulting and speaking practice is a great source of pride for Jordan – which led to an opportunity to join one of his clients to lead operations of the Amazing Lash Brand. Jordan joined Radiance Executive Team in 2020 to apply his two decades of franchise learnings to the already flourishing Sola Salons brand. It is his belief that strong franchisee relationships and trust are what build a solid foundation. Jordan particularly resonates with Sola's core value of Care – Jordan cares deeply about franchisees and Sola Pros. Be sure to take notes and Jordan shares: Why you should understand that your P & L is your report card and EBITDA is your grade and how they impact your business Why it's ok to make mistakes and how important it is for your business growth to actually make them Why you should look at failing as a win in other ways Why you shouldn't be afraid of sales Why if you really truly believe in your product you're doing people a disservice not to use sales to sell it Get ready to be inspired by Jordan's enthusiasm and to get your business and your life on the path to success with his wisdom and advice - let's get hacking! What a story we have for you today as we are joined by Kerry Sawyer. Kerry began her entrepreneurship journey with a goal of leaving the 9-5 and being able to be at home with her daughter. That lead her and her husband at the time to start a tax company and while they kept their day jobs for a while they were able to eventually make enough to replace their income and work for themselves. Fast forward a little while and Kerry had developed a professional relationship with Gordon Logan, Founder of Sport Clips and he convinced Kerry to become an Area Developer for the Sport Clips brand. With incredible amount of success and being in the right place at the right time a Sport Clips franchise owner had to sell 3 locations and Kerry was able to purchase those stores while still working as an Area Developer. Her ownership grew to 45 locations with Sport Clips and she gained a lifetime of knowledge that Kerry will be able to use for any new venture that comes her way.Unfortunate circumstances lead to the sale of her Sport Clips franchise and again being in the right place at the right time happened when the previous owner of a specific Painting with a Twist franchise was ready to sell and Kerry was ready to buy.Now you might be asking how lucky is Kerry and it is very clear that luck has nothing to do with her success. She knows how to foster great relationships everywhere she goes. She knows how to build teams and keep people happy at the various levels of a business and ultimately Kerry knows how to turn around a franchise business into a successful franchise business as she follows the systems and procedures created from the Franchisor.Listen in this week to hear Kerry Sawyer's story that lead her to where she is today!Have you heard the news? How is Jon Torine passing on the wisdom of his legendary coaching mentors?Coaching, much like parenting, has a deep influence on young people. Many of us learn how to coach from those who coached us. Unfortunately, not everyone has ideal coaching role models. Coaching lessons that are passed down generationally can have significant influence - positive or negative - on young athletes. It is critical to educate coaches on effective practices in order to curb the troubling youth sport dropout rate.My guest, Jon Torine, is a former NFL strength and conditioning coach and currently an Area Developer for i9 Sports. In Episode 36, Jon discusses how he has adopted the lessons from legendary coaches, such as Marv Levy and Tony Dungy. Jon shares how he is using those lessons in his current role as a franchise operator at i9 Sports, whose mission is helping kids succeed in life through sports. So, what was your biggest takeaway from my conversation with Jon Torine? For me, it's that it's not okay to stay quiet as it relates to sharing best practices for coaching youth sports. The best coaches coach people, not games. About 70 percent of young people drop out of youth sports by the age of 13 presumably because they are not having fun. Coaches play a big role in that equation. Youth sport coaching MUST be better in order to quell this troubling trend. My suggestion to youth sports parents is think about the life lessons you would like your children to learn when helping them choose what teams to play on. Winning and competing is important to young athletes, but should it be the MOST important factor in choosing a team?I want to thank Jon for his kind generosity and the wisdom he shared with The Freshman Foundation Community. To learn more about the nature of the coach-athlete relationship, visit: https://michaelvhuber.com/what-can-a-tv-character-teach-us-about-the-coach-athlete-relationship/To learn more about how mental performance coaching can help your mind work FOR you rather than AGAINST you, visit https://michaelvhuber.com.Thank you for listening. We'll see you back in two weeks ready to get better!

If you are a veteran enrolled in college for this fall semester, you are more than likely knee-deep in classes by now. If you took advantage of the Post-9/11 GI Bill you're probably not worried about the debt. But, scholarships can go a long way to help you reach educational goals when benefits don't quite get you there. Since 2013, the generous folks at Sport Clips Haircuts have helped raise millions of dollars for the VFW's Sport Clips Help A Hero scholarship. With that in mind, Rob took the #StillServing podcast on the road and traveled to San Antonio, Texas, for this year's Sport Clips Haircuts annual National Huddle convention. During this episode of the #StillServing podcast, Host Rob Couture speaks with Sport Clips Chairman and Founder, and VFW life-member Mr. Gordon Logan to hear about how he went from being a C-130 pilot during the Vietnam war to the head of one of the most innovative franchises in North America. He also speaks with influencers within the Sport Clip system and with a mutual partner of both the VFW and Sport Clips, president and founder of Dream Flights, Mr. Darryl Fisher to learn about what his charity does to give the experience of a lifetime to our most senior veterans. Gordon Logan, Chairman, and Founder, Sport Clips Haircuts — Mr. Logan shares his inspiration for developing Sport Clips and how the organization goes the extra mile to give men and boys the style and service they deserve. [13:53] Amanda highlights some of the fundraising efforts for the Help A Hero campaign that comes from Sport Clips clients and franchisees. Sammy Aldeeb is the CEO of Urban Bricks and Jaime Torres is an Area Developer with a focus on the state of Florida. Both have a passion for the company, the restaurant business and getting the word out about Urban Bricks. In 2015, Sammy decided to take his ventures to the next level and create a brand that specializes in fast-casual pizza, pasta, paninis and salad. Since the debut of Urban Bricks Kitchen in 2015, Sammy has been opening stores nationwide and internationally to expand the Urban Bricks Brand while catering to millennial markets and forward-thinkers. Since 2015 more than 100+ have been sold. Sammy and Jaime understand what it takes to build a great brand and what it takes to succeed in the restaurant industry. We are meeting with Stewart Vernon, CEO and Founder of America's Swimming Pool Company. Today's show will discuss Stewart's journey toward entrepreneurship and how he founded America's Swimming Pool Company. He can discuss coming up with the business plan while in college, working as an apprentice after returning home for college and how he was able to get industry advice from a retired pool maintenance owner before launching his own company, ASP-America's Swimming Pool Company. Stewart will discuss how he gained real experience by launching his own company and how that translated to the continued success that the brand is experiencing, having its best Q1 in 2012 to date. America's Swimming Pool Company has also opened 16 new franchise territories that service 11 states and have signed their first Area Developer in Arizona this year. America's Swimming Pool Company, the Nation's most respected swimming pool maintenance and repair franchise, was established in 2001 by Stewart Vernon of Macon, Georgia. The company was built on the belief that providing the highest-quality pool maintenance with competitive pricing and a high level of dependability will attract customers. Since 2005, ASP has expanded into 99 territories in the Southeast, servicing over 175 cities and eleven states across the country. At this point, the company manages over 60 million gallons of water per week and renovates or remodels more than 250 pools each year. In part 2, we hear from the great Warren Greshes from our Great Quotes in Franchising Podcast.
We are meeting with Barry Bodiford, CEO of 360clean, a specialized janitorial franchise. We are also meeting with Dennis Null, Area Developer of 360clean. 360clean Launches Area Development Effort to Fuel U.S. Expansion Franchised cleaning service offers eager entrepreneurs affordable opportunity for high returns CHARLESTON, S.C.—360clean, a rapidly growing specialized janitorial services firm, is ramping up efforts to broaden its franchise business throughout the Southeastern U.S. in 2011. The combination of its proven operating system and innovative franchise model makes the highly affordable and high-return 360clean opportunity an ideal option for eager entrepreneurs with two options, a unit franchisee or an area developer. The son and grandson of entrepreneurs, CEO Barry Bodiford pursued his own ownership dream by founding 360clean in 2005 and began franchising in 2008. At the time he was a successful and satisfied pharmaceutical sales rep, but he couldn't ignore the urge to manage his business destiny. Having been a graduate assistant coach for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks football team from 1997 to 1999, Bodiford learned the true meaning of work ethic. “I had never met a group of people so focused and so hard-working in all my life,” said Bodiford. “Emulating their behavior gave me the tools I needed to get my own business off the ground later in life.” Bodiford never thought a career in athletics could have paved the way for him to run a successful business of his own but that emphasis on hard work was all it took to hit the ground running. "Did I dream of having a janitorial service as a career? Of course not," said Bodiford, laughing. "But when I started researching business opportunities, I discovered that some of the least-sexy businesses are among the most profitable. That interested me." With a wife and two children at home, Bodiford launched 360clean while maintaining his pharmaceutical sales job.

Today we talked to some of Atlanta's leading business owners who are doing some very creative things in their respective industries.First up we had on Tunstall Rushton President and CEO of Benevolink, a new movement in corporate giving that links individuals, corporations and nonprofit organizations to improve communities. The Benevolink program helps consumers give to their favorite charities, including schools, religious, arts and cultural organizations and other causes our consumer members really care about, through the act of shopping . It also helps businesses increase sales, profits and market share, while forming bonds with consumers. And lastly it helps charities generate additional, unrestricted revenue on a year-round basis while adding value for their supporters Now, the simple act of shopping -- when coupled with the power of 'pooled giving' and consumer choice -- creates a win-win-win scenario for consumers, businesses and charitable causes. Our vision is to significantly increase the funding capacity over time for more than one million nonprofit organizations making a difference in their communities across the United States. For more information please check out their website www.benevolink.com Next up we had on Theresa Barber with FranChoice.Theresa Barber’s diverse experience in business and franchising gives her the expertise to carefully guide entrepreneurs in the sometimes-difficult path of choosing the best franchise for them. For eight years Ms. Barber managed a multi-million dollar worldwide tour company, which gave her extensive experience in management, finance, sales, and marketing. Her love of travel brought her into the franchising arena in 1996 when she joined Uniglobe Travel as a Franchise Advisor, becoming a top performer early on. She accepted the role of Manager of Business Development when she moved from New England to Georgia. Here she worked directly with franchisees in the Northeast and Southeast regions to help them achieve their business goals. She advised them in areas of staffing, marketing, and budgeting for growth. Ms. Barber conducted regular regional meetings with franchisees, trained owners and employees in technology, customer relations, and franchise “best practices.” Her main focus prior to moving back into sales as an Area Developer with Uniglobe was “hand holding” the new franchisees for a smooth transition into ownership. In 2000, Ms. Barber was recruited by Netspace to spearhead the franchise sales department of a brand new technology franchise. With her strong sales and management skills, and the love of the internet motivating her, she soon became the national leader in franchise sales, and helped build a very successful franchise organization. She assisted in developing internal processes, and trained new franchisees in technology, sales, and marketing. Today, Theresa Barber utilizes the skills that she has acquired over the years to help individuals find a perfect match in the franchising arena that compliments their own skills and allow them to achieve their goals. If you are thinking about buying a franchise you should give Theresa a call and take her up on her free consultation she can save you some time and some money. For more info please check out her website http://tbarber.franchoice.com And last but not least we had on Bart Foster CEO and Founder of SoloHealth, an early stage company positioned to capitalize on the growing consumer preference for self-directed health care services. Its first product, EyeSite™, is an automated vision-testing kiosk, which allows consumers to quickly and efficiently check their vision without assistance. SoloHealth is a spin-out venture originating from CIBA Vision, the eye care unit of Novartis AG. As consumers become more accustomed to many types of fast and efficient self-service transactions, (ATMs,, airline check-in, photos, etc.) and with their growing knowledge and concern about health, it is inevitable that more people will embrace self-directed health care. With EyeSite™ as the entry product, our goal is to become a world leader in self-service health screening and efficient referral to health care providers. According to the American Optometric Association, the average person only visits an eye care professional every 36-48 months, about half as often as recommended. Because eyesight usually deteriorates very slowly and can easily go unnoticed, many people don’t realize they could benefit from vision correction and the importance of regular exams. The EyeSite™ self-service kiosk, located in high-traffic locations, will entice individuals to assess their vision more often, resulting in greater utilization of services from eye care professionals and more sales of vision care products. For more information about Bart and his company please go to his website www.solo-health.com Also if you know of a business in Atlanta that we should know about please email Amy Otto at Amy @ atlantabusinessradio.com and we will try and get them on the show.
