In this episode, I get a chance to talk with Christine Aspell, the newly appointed chair of MACPA's Board of Directors. MACPA has a long history of pulling in leaders with some of the best diversity of thought in their profession. We lean on these leaders not only to help MACPA serve members but also help our profession flourish as a whole. Christine is Managing Partner and Audit Partner at KPMG's Baltimore office, with 25+ years of experience providing assurance services to clients. She is passionate about the future of this profession, particularly when it comes to diversity & inclusion, advancing women in the profession, and helping the talent pipeline leading to profession. The pipeline is a huge concern as of late and multiple solutions have been proposed centering around education and regulatory requirements. Christine is taking a different tact; she wants to reconnect CPAs with a purpose behind their work and to share that purpose with students and young professionals who are hungry for work with meaning. "Our profession continues to change rapidly as technological advancements and regulatory changes and demographic trends reshape what we do and how we do it, but even amid that change, one thing remains constant: our purpose. The what, how, and even who of our great profession will adapt and change, but what won't change is our why." says Christine. Christine is hoping to collect and share stories about how CPAs help their clients who in turn help their communities; how CPAs help people lead better lives. These are the stories that will inspire others to become a part of this profession. Listen to learn more about this initiative and to hear Christine's own inspirational story. Even though forty-five states permit marijuana, and one-third of Americans live in a location where recreational marijuana use is legal, it is still a controlled substance as a matter of federal law. Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas recently wrote: “Once comprehensive, the Federal Government's current approach is a half-in, half-out regime that simultaneously tolerates and forbids local use of marijuana. This contradictory and unstable state of affairs strains basic principles of federalism and conceals traps for the unwary.” Including accounting and tax traps. Ken Teasdale, audit partner at Armanino, will help us understand the many complex issues associated with this industry.

My guest today is Samantha Bowling, who's an Audit Partner at the accounting firm of Garbelman Winslow in Maryland and the current Chair of the Executive Board of the Maryland Association of CPAs. This episode is focused on public accounting, but it also has great implications to business and industry accounting professionals. So, I encourage anyone in accounting – or just interested in how AI is going to change the nature of work – to listen to the interview and decide how these technologies might affect your organization. Now, in March of 2016, artificial intelligence was introduced to the accounting profession when IBM and KPMG signed an agreement to bring Watson into KPMG's audit practice. At the time (and still, really), many of the small- to middle-sized firms speculated that this technology was too expensive for their practices. Samantha, however, saw an opportunity. She felt that if the larger firms had this advantage, how long would it be until they started taking clients? She turned that question into action, and 18 months after IBM and KPMG's announcement, Samantha was able to bring artificial intelligence into her audit practice at an affordable price. In fact, Samantha was awarded the Innovative Practitioner Award 2018 from CPA.com for her efforts – and it was well deserved! Now, if you're still a little skeptical or just curious, then start listening or keep reading and you'll learn how she did it. Small Firm, Big Technology For context, Samantha’s firm only has about 15 employees, depending on the time of year. They do mostly everything that small firms do, except for government contracting, and she happens to be the audit partner at this firm. So when Samantha heard about KPMG introducing AI into their audit practice three years ago, she thought she was probably going to lose a lot of revenue if the large firms have Watson and her firm doesn’t have anything. “I'm not going to be able to do auditing anymore,” Samantha though. “[But] I really don't like tax. So, I have to find a solution." Samantha started by talking to her software providers, asking how they were implementing AI into her platform... and they said they weren't. They were only going to look into AI for the large firm platforms. She was a little discouraged, but she didn’t stop searching. Instead, she did what most of us do when we have a question: she Googled it. She just happened to come across a company called MindBridge, a Canadian startup company that was willing to work with her and let her try it out. Still, she was skeptical. She thought she can't afford the software, it’s probably not going to do what it says it's going to do; was she setting herself up for disappointment? What's the point of an audit if it fails to detect when a company's about to go under? The sudden collapse of BHS, Carillion and Patisserie Valerie has dented public confidence in the firms that audited them and prompted calls for a shake-up of the audit industry. Would more competition in the sector, which is dominated by four big players, drive audit quality up? Do accountants need to be more robust in challenging company figures? The skills and attributes of a successful audit partner
Tim Pike, Audit Partner with Howard LLP, joined us for this week's episode of Life In Accounting: The Where Accountants Go podcast. It was too much paperwork… In an interesting initial twist to this interview, we learn that Tim actually started out to be a physical therapist early in life. However, when he interned in the field he realized that there was more repetitive paperwork than he really wanted on an ongoing basis in the physical therapy profession so he decided to look elsewhere. We laugh a little in the interview given that he settled on accounting after deciding that he wanted less paperwork… but truly what it was that drew him to the profession was the higher level of diversity in servicing client needs overall. What it means to be “Partner” I felt that one of the most valuable parts of the interview was the discussion of what it truly means to be a “partner” in a CPA firm. Tim discusses how many people initially simply think of it as a managerial and profit sharing position, but in reality it means that you are an owner in the business. We also discuss what it takes to be successful as a partner in a firm, and among other items Tim highlights that communication and listening skills are two of the most important attributes. Trust your gut When you get to the ‘biggest mistake' portion of the audio interview, you are going to hear Tim be very transparent and open about an audit issue he faced early in his career. Given the business climate we have had in recent years, I really appreciated that he shared this story. If you are considering going into public accounting of any kind, audit or tax, there is a good lesson to be learned from his experience. Make sure you don't miss that part of the interview. Stay tuned in the next couple weeks as we do a 2-part series on forensic accounting as well. We have two individuals joining us from an Austin area firm to share their experience in that field. Have a great week!
