Hosted on Acast. In this episode of the EY Sustainability Matters podcast, the spotlight is turned to the often underestimated impact of the global building and materials industry, specifically cement production, on climate change. Despite playing a crucial role in our everyday lives, this industry's significant contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions and extensive energy and natural resource consumption is often overlooked. Host Bruno Sarda is joined by EY Latin America Climate Change and Sustainability Services leader Ruth Guevara and Vicente Saiso, Global Vice President of Sustainability at CEMEX, a global leader in the building materials industry, to talk about bold decarbonization strategies in such an important sector. Vicente acknowledges the cement industry's significant contribution to global emissions but highlights its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint, mentioning key strategies involving alternative fuels, use of waste materials, and adoption of innovative technologies such as hydrogen in production processes. He explains how, through this process to decarbonize, CEMEX has found business opportunities and cost benefits. Ruth and Vicente discuss the role of waste management in creating a circular economy in the cement industry. Vicente shares how CEMEX turned waste repurposing into a business opportunity by providing services to construction customers to manage their construction and demolition waste, which contributes significantly to global waste management. The episode then explores the innovative and ambitious technologies CEMEX is pursuing to help them play the opposite role and actually reduce environmental impact through cement production. Lastly, the guests shed light on how stakeholder support is crucial for companies' decarbonization initiatives. © 2024 Ernst & Young LLP

As businesses prepare to meet the growing demand for transparency in emissions reporting, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is leading the way in setting global standards for climate target setting. In a recent episode of the EY Sustainability Matters podcast, host Bruno Sarda is joined by Alberto Carrillo Pineda, cofounder and CTO of the SBTi, and the two members of the EY Climate Change and Sustainability Services, Rob Bradley, Managing Director, Ernst & Young LLP, and Miranda Nayyar, Manager, Ernst & Young LLP. Setting, reporting and delivering on credible climate targets is becoming increasingly important as mandatory climate regulations come into effect. EY teams and the SBTi are collaborating in this area to support clients in committing to and setting science-based targets, and in developing decarbonization pathways to meet these goals. The EY organization and the SBTi recently co-authored research on the landscape of corporate measurement, reporting and verification related to science-based target setting, which will be available later on ey.com. Pineda emphasizes that the SBTi's focus is on setting the global standard for science-based climate targets to promote accountability and transparency. The speakers address the challenges companies face in climate target setting, particularly in gathering robust data and achieving set targets. The discussion also explores the impact of emerging climate disclosures, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the U.S. Securities and Exchange commission (SEC), and how companies can prepare for these. Looking to the future, Pineda is optimistic about the actual implementation, and notes that the SBTi standards will continue to evolve. Key takeaways include: The importance of setting climate targets has increased, and with more companies making public disclosures, issues of standardization have arisen. The SBTi is evolving standards to provide a globally standardized way to set climate targets and assess decarbonization progress. Setting of targets should go hand in hand with a robust decarbonization strategy to deliver on commitments. Key challenges are data collection and access to data across the value chain. The SBTi is moving toward a formal standard-setting structure and remains dedicated to continuously evolving and revising their standards to ensure alignment with the most up-to-date scientific research and evidence. © 2023 Ernst & Young LLP

The discussion begins with the analysis of the different frameworks already in existence from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and others. Many businesses have already adopted these, but there is pressure from regulators, investors and other stakeholders for frameworks to be standardized and mandated. Voluntary reporting is not taking businesses far enough to reduce their impact on climate and nature. The ISSB has an important role in accelerating this, and the hosts discuss whether the aggressive timeline for introducing the ISSB standards is realistic, what resistance is likely and what the prospects are for global acceptance. They also talk about how the new standards from the US SEC and the EU CSRD frameworks will fall into the picture. Companies should prepare for a potential new reality, where ESG reporting could be as rigorous and mandated as financial reporting. Bruno and Terence discuss the need for culture change and the key role of the CFO in gathering and managing the ESG data. © 2023 Ernst & Young LLP

In the second of our series-of-three Sustainability Matters podcasts dealing with environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosures worldwide, our host Bruno Sarda focuses on biodiversity and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). He is joined by two members of the Taskforce: Marine de Bazelaire, Group Advisor on Natural Capital, HSBC, and Alexis Gazzo, Leader, Climate Change and Sustainability Services in France at EY & Associés The discussion begins with the urgent need to tackle the loss of biodiversity that threatens global economy. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which came out of the recent UN Biodiversity Conference, COP 15, aims to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. As businesses and their stakeholders start to recognize biodiversity as a business priority, and begin to consider their impact and reliance on nature, there will be an increasing need for transparent natural capital disclosures to help achieve these global biodiversity targets. This is where the TNFD comes in. Marine discusses the importance of addressing nature-related issues and halting nature loss to achieve a net-zero future. She also highlights how financial institutions are becoming more engaged piloting the TNFD beta framework and gives a fascinating insight into how HSBC is preparing for future nature-based disclosures. Alexis talks about the TNFD and how it is seeking to address the challenges facing biodiversity, including how companies can begin to prepare for reporting. He discusses practical steps to take, and how EY teams can help companies identify areas of exposure to biodiversity-related risks. © 2023 Ernst & Young LLP
On this episode, Nate speaks with econometrician and sustainability researcher Gaya Herrington about her new book, Five Insights for Avoiding Global Collapse, a more in-depth and personal telling of her 2021 review of the Limits to Growth (LTG). More than 50 years after the original LTG report was released, the model trajectories remain both relevant and controversial, as we continue with the ‘business as usual' scenario, in which the LTG model resulted in collapse. Why are we stuck on this road and how are our growth based economic systems optimized to keep us there? Is it possible to shift our goals to a different path, away from growth, focused on the well-being of all life? Can we plan or mitigate the path to descent? About Gaya Herrington: Gaya is a Dutch econometrician, sustainability researcher, and women's rights activist. Gaya holds masters' degrees in both econometrics and sustainability studies. After becoming disillusioned by initially working in the financial sector Gaya became the executive director of StoereVrouwen, a non-profit Dutch women's movement promoting sustainable economic policies through activism. In 2014, Herrington became the Director of Sustainability Services of KPMG. Most recently, her study on the projections made in the 1972 Limits to Growth report was widely publicized internationally. She is currently Vice President Sustainability Research at Schneider Electric. For Show Notes and More visit: https://www.thegreatsimplification.com/episode/57-Gaya-Herrington

Kristen is a CPA (CT, MO) and CGMA and earned SASB's Fundamentals of Sustainability Accounting (FSA) Credential. Kristen completed the Berkeley Law Executive Education Certification: ESG: Navigating the Board's Role. Kristen Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The role of assurance professionals in ESG The future of comparability of data across the industry - a building blocks approach The shift in approach to ESG toward integration Where we are in transformational change in business Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Kristen's Final Five Questions Responses What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I love this question. As I reflect on my journey and the fact that I didn't come to this space with an expertise or an ESG education, I always encourage professionals no matter where they are in their career to really look at, in a traditional corporate context as an example, where is that discipline that you align with? For me it was accounting. Whether it's marketing or operations, finance or legal, complementing a traditional discipline within an organization to really bring that depth and a perspective of the way ESG or sustainability overlays to bring a differentiated perspective to that discipline. We've seen that this “ESG expert” doesn't really exist per se, because we know that ESG performance and priority areas are so broad and diverse. So, bringing that perspective to an existing discipline within an organization is that tool, that effective way to help an organization drive integration within all parts of the business. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? The momentum, the energy, the passion that we're seeing by not the usual suspects in the market. For those of us who have been working in this space for a long time, the commitment and energy that we're seeing from within organizations. It's not just the sustainability team; it's the finance teams, operations, the supply chain, the talent teams that are all really engaging and driving this momentum. And then naturally, it's a reflection of where the market is headed more broadly, but I would say very simply that the momentum and the recognition that ESG is not a fading movement; it's really here to stay and it's going to become increasingly central to companies. It's the license to operate and the license to grow. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability professionals read? It's hard to choose, but the first is Accountable: The Rise of Citizen Capitalism. It's a great book that came out not too long ago. Michael O'Leary creates and provides some practical examples of the way that the capital markets are evolving and the way in which ESG is so central to strategy. I've also always been a fan of John Mackey. Conscious Capitalism and Conscious Leadership are two of his books that provide great perspective and examples for those participating in this space at different levels of maturity. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? This will likely come as no surprise. While it's not super sexy, looking to the developments in the whole standards landscape. The largely voluntary standards today - standards and frameworks - there's a tremendous amount of guidance and practical tools that are provided for public use that really help translate these concepts into actionable business priorities, and really help guide companies along this journey toward preparedness for greater scrutiny. The work that that we do is naturally grounded in standards, and the value of a number of these resources is somewhat underplayed given that there's a wealth of accessible information out there. Hanne Thornam, EY Norway Head of Climate Change and Sustainability Services, joins Winna Brown to share why PE is in a unique position to lead our transition to a low-carbon, circular economy. Contact Hanne: hanne.thornam@no.ey.com As private equity (PE) firms focus on ESG, they must also pivot to a long-term, forward-thinking mindset. For an industry accustomed to using historical data to project the next four to five years, this is no simple task; however, it is an existential one. Climate change will mean our world looks very different in a decade regardless of the action we take (or don't take), and PE firms are uniquely equipped to lead this mission, should they choose to accept it. ESG topics have both financial and commercial relevance, and PE must define and track KPIs that are specific to each portfolio company. It is no longer optional to engage in the ESG conversation, as a lack of awareness is an inherent business risk. Two overarching climate scenarios are possible, both of which require comprehensive adaptation and imagination: A warming scenario in which rising temperatures impact access to raw materials, stoke political stability and disrupt value chains A transition scenario characterized by increasing regulation, bans and changes in technology and consumer preferences Six ways PE firms can shift their mindset to increase their climate competence and confidence: Champion a long-term, forward-looking perspective Cross-pollinate climate data across workstreams Incorporate climate scenarios as core data points Engage diverse perspectives Embrace complexity and curiosity Verify competence on climate and environmental risks in investment teams

If we see poverty as the result of financial illiteracy, irresponsibility or a lack of self-control, then the blame falls on the person living in poverty, and the answer is to find a job, spend less, and get financial training.Financial literacy education is definitely important, and these programs have their benefits. But knowledge alone does not develop capability and behaviour change, any more than knowing you should exercise leads to going to the gym.So why do the majority of financial interventions fail? To understand that, we're Changing Lenses to see through the eyes of people experiencing financial vulnerability. Dr. Emily Heath, a senior researcher and behavioural neuroscientist, explains the cognitive biases and psychology behind financial decision-making. As we learn about the barriers to healthy financial behaviour, we also learn how racism, discrimination and other forms of oppression exacerbate the problem. In this episode, you'll learn:The cognitive biases that derail our best intentions for saving moneyWhy low-income kids do worse in the “marshmallow test”How poverty is a tax on decision-makingThe effect of traumatic events like racism and domestic violence on financial capabilityWhat neuroscience tells us will actually help people facing financial vulnerability[Please pardon the poor audio quality due to internet recording.]Full transcript available here.Contact Rosie and find JEDI resources at: https://www.changinglenses.ca/ABOUT DR. Sustainability is a topic that's moved up and down the client agenda for a while now—but around this time last year it felt to many like we'd reached a turning point, and businesses around the world were starting to actually put their money where their mouths were, spurred on by Greta Thunberg, the global climate strikes, and the new wave of media focus on the issue. And while COVID-19 has certainly impacted client priorities, and perhaps led to a bit more of an emphasis on the social side of the ESG equation, it doesn't seem to have much dampened interest in the topic. Today on the podcast, we'll be examining the role that sustainability services play in today's professional services market—and what role they could play in the future.

Today, CTG has donated over 1M computers with over 3 million users worldwide. Last year Olivier and his family moved to Kenya to launch a computer recycling and manufacturing hub in Nairobi in order to better serve the local market. COVID-19 temporarily brought Olivier back to Belgium, where he is currently active as one of the key figures behind Digital For Youth. This organisation is providing refurbished laptops to children from less wealthy families in order to make sure they can continue lessons in times when homeschooling becomes the norm.

“This is an issue where politicians can reach across the aisle. You don’t have to be a bleeding heart liberal to feel good about renewable energy because it is more efficient and increasingly less expensive. ” ~ Amy Haddon, Vice President for Global Content and Cleantech Marketing for Schneider Electric Energy & Sustainability Services. Amy creates content to inform Schneider’s existing and potential clients on sustainability, renewable energy and other cleantech topics. But she also works with those clients to develop their own sustainability reports and communicate about their efforts. Many people have to focus on a very tight topic related to their own job. As a communicator and content creator, Amy gets to take a wide view across many areas of sustainability in multiple industries.Focusing on consumer choices is not effectiveWe discussed the danger of focusing on the environmental impact of our personal consumer choices. That can lead to small changes but it can also result in guilt and frustration which doesn’t help anyone. It can lead people to focus their energy on smaller objectives where they have more control, like eliminating their use of plastic straws. But that does nothing to stop the larger problem of climate change. Demanding action on climate change should be our focus"Climate change in particular should be the primary focus for any of us taking action on the environment, because ultimately if we don’t mitigate climate change the ramifications of those impacts will trump any other environmental problems that we might have. For the majority of us we don’t have a lot of choices around how we get our energy. We don’t have a lot of choices over our food systems. We don’t have a lot of choices over our transportation systems, so I think that making people feel guilty about their choices is a tactic that doesn’t ultimately work because we don’t understand the scale of the systems that we’re really working within and because ultimately and unfortunately, those small consumer choices that we can make, while important and certainly affirming in terms of at least we’re doing something, they’re a small drop in the overall bucket, whereas I think our activities, our energy, our resources, could and should be better spent to pull bigger levers, like politics and government regulations and other things that we really need to change those human systems and make the system itself more sustainable so that when we come to make a choice we can feel assured that the choice that we’re making, because it’s the choice that we have, is the right choice." ~ Amy HaddonPlease help us grow the showDo you have a friend that would enjoy this show. Michele is a Managing Principal of Sustainability Services at Waste Management and has 20 years of experience in the environmental field helping customers obtain their sustainability objectives, concentrating on the triple bottom line while ensuring brand and quality is not compromised. Since joining Waste Management in 2009, she has supported a diverse portfolio of projects, sharing best practices among Fortune 500 customers. Her current areas of focus are CSR reporting, sustainable sports and circular economy. Michele leads enterprise-wide data collection for WM’s greenhouse gas reporting and third-party verification; CDP reporting on climate change, water and supply chain (Climate A List status!); and is currently developing science-based goals. She enjoys working with customers on waste diversion strategies that move beyond zero waste to refocus on the environmental benefits. Michele Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Importance of waste management and reduction in an organization's greenhouse gas emissions targets. Achieving zero waste at large events such as the Phoenix Open. Evolving sustainability goals. Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders. Michele's Final Five Question Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I would suggest be flexible. Be open and flexible about where you fit into an organization as a sustainability professional. Every single business can benefit from your work, but if you're rigid about a hierarchy or where you fit in, you might find it challenging. Not every company has a chief sustainability officer. I know people with a title that is something like sustainability directors that are in HR, Operations, Marketing, government affairs etc.. I think the important thing is to build networks across the organization because you're going to need all of them to get the work done; procurement, government affairs, HR, marketing and sales. You're going to need everyone in order to get the sustainability work done, but being open and flexible about defining that I think is important. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I am really grateful and thankful that we are able to do work that has meaning to us and to be able to quantify the benefits from a climate change and greenhouse gas reduction perspective. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? I recently finished The Sixth Extinction: An unnatural history by Elizabeth Colbert, which might be a strange one to suggest. It's so wonderfully written and although it has this daunting title, she makes you take a step back and consider all the times in the history of the planet that diversity has suddenly, geologically speaking, contracted. And then take a look at human beings as a species and how we're in the middle of another major extinction. So, while it's not exactly uplifting, as a scientist, I found it kind of refreshing to just look at the actual concept of species extinction, without her really offering a way out of the mess but just saying this is where we are in time. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I turn often to the Greenhouse Gas Institute's website, especially for tools and guidelines that are internationally recognized and useful. We do that internally for Waste Management. We also use it for our customers, so they're super transparent. I turn to GreenBiz often. Their website and their blogs are great for inspiration and learning. I'm also always looking at different waste reduction models. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work that you're leading at Waste Management? I seem to be less and less on social media, but my twitter handle is @precautionaryp. I'm also on Linkedin. Our sustainability report will be posted at www.wm.com when it comes out in a couple of months. And my email, if you want to contact me is mgrossm1@wm.com.
