From the BBC World Service: Parents in China are being offered a little extra help, about $500 a year for every child under three. It's the government's first nationwide subsidy in a bid to increase birth rates. State media says around 20 million families are eligible for the payments. But will it work? Plus, with northern Mexico in the middle of a severe drought, the country is falling behind on water deliveries to the U.S. promised by a treaty. The Trump administration isn't happy.

In Episode 16 of Quite Frankly, Frankie Val opens the lines and lets the audience steer the ship through a fast-paced mix of headlines, theories, and cultural commentary. Kicking off with a strange blend of nostalgia and media mind games, Frankie dives into a bizarre “Hulk Hogan vs. Ozzy Osbourne” social media debate before pivoting to real-world concerns like the alarming decline in birth rates. Listeners weigh in with sharp takes on feminism, the breakdown of traditional values, and what it means to raise families in a world shaped by confusion and contradiction. Frankie ties these themes together with his signature wit, touching on post-9/11 societal shifts, psychological warfare in the media, and the engineered suppression of masculinity. With plenty of humor, insight, and unfiltered calls, this open-lines episode captures the raw energy of the Quite Frankly community, where the topics are unpredictable, but the search for truth never wavers.

What would the world look like if children became scarcer? Birthrates are falling across the world but the main voices trying to turn them around seem to be weird traditionalist “pronatalists”. Is there a way to encourage having more kids while preserving women's freedom – and without encouraging right-wing conspiracy ideas about “replacement”? Or should we just tax people who don't have kids? Demographer and author of No One Left: Why the World Needs More Children Paul Morland tells Alex von Tunzelmann how culture not government shapes the way we breed, and why collapsing birthrates are not solely a white European/Western issue any more. • Buy No One Left: Why the World Needs More Children through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund The Bunker by earning us a small commission for every sale. Birth rates are crashing worldwide. After the Spike author Dean Spears reveals why depopulation — not overpopulation — threatens humanity's future.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1180What We Discuss with Dean Spears:Global depopulation is coming. Birth rates are falling worldwide and will soon drop below replacement level, causing population to peak then decline rapidly within decades.Depopulation won't solve climate change. Environmental problems are solved by changing what people do, not reducing population. Timing doesn't align with climate urgency.Government birth rate policies largely fail. Of 26 countries with birth rates below 1.9, none have returned above 2.0 despite various incentives and programs.Fewer people means fewer innovations. People generate the ideas and technologies that solve problems. Depopulation reduces humanity's capacity for progress.Start conversations about population stabilization. Rather than endless decline, we can work toward stabilizing population and making parenting more feasible and fair. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! The total fertility rate is a small number with big consequences. It measures how many babies, on average, each woman will have over her lifetime. And for a population to remain stable - flat, no growth, no decline - women, on average, have to have 2.1 kids.In the U.S., that number is 1.6, and dropping. It's driving a new political debate about what – if anything – can be done about it. The thing is, beneath that demographic data point are millions of families making intimate decisions about kids. NPR's Sarah McCammon and Brian Mann dug into the politics and personal stories behind America's shrinking birthrate. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
From center-left Ezra Klein to right-wing Matt Walsh, the fertility panic is an elite fixation that is rooted in a human supremacist worldview and a deep fear of slowing growth. Samuel Miller McDonald, geographer and author of the book Progress: A History of Humanity's Worst Idea, exposes how our parasitic relationship with Earth lies at the core of ecological overshoot, and why resisting authoritarianism in an age of contraction means embracing a pluralistic and just degrowth vision. Highlights include: Why our modern relationship to Earth is fundamentally parasitic - regardless of whether societies are capitalist or socialist; How media commentators resist degrowth in various stages and how their rejection reveals their lack of maturity in accepting responsibility for the ecological destruction we are causing; Why degrowth policies and practices should emphasize pluralistic, context-specific approaches rooted in democratic participation, not top-down master plans; Why many degrowth proponents have been dismissive of population concerns; Why the political right is more poised to benefit from ongoing economic contraction and why the liberal 'abundance agenda' needs to be resisted; Why conviviality and class solidarity are key to a successful degrowth transition and how modern societies undermine them; Why core values like fairness, autonomy, and ecological integrity will be essential in resisting authoritarians' claims to power in the coming challenging decades. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings. A new poll finds Americans don't see reversing the declining birth rate as a government priority. AP correspondent Jennifer King reports.
Lyman Stone is a demographer, researcher, and a writer. It's no surprise that birth rates are plummeting; raising kids feels harder than ever. Life is expensive, the future feels uncertain, and chaos is everywhere. So how do we reverse course? What would actually convince people to have more children and pull us back from a looming population crisis? Expect to learn why fertility rates are falling off a cliff, why many young adults are struggling to have and even afford children in this economy, where mating preferences for fertility comes from, how women get their standards for men and who they base it off of, if men are suppose to be the breadwinners of a family this day in age, the real satisfaction rates of men and women in the workforce, why humans have such a hard time with big changes, and much more... There's one little statistic that seems to have gained a lot of attention recently: the birth rate. With pro-natalist ideas showing up in our culture and politics, Brittany wanted to know: why are people freaking out? Who's trying to solve the population equation, and how? Brittany is joined by Kelsey Piper, senior writer at Vox, and Gideon Lewis-Kraus, staff writer at The New Yorker, to get into how the birth rate touches every part of our culture - and why we might need to rethink our approach to this stat.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
A new study coauthored by Dr. Vibeke Manniche shows birth rates plummeted in 2022. The Czech study reveals women vaccinated for COVID-19 had significantly lower conception rates than unvaccinated women from June 2021 to 2023. Using nationwide data from the Institute of Health Information and Statistics, researchers analyzed 1.3 million women aged 18-39. By late 2021, 70% were vaccinated, mostly with Pfizer or Moderna mRNA shots. By 2022, conception rates were 1.5 times higher in unvaccinated women. In this episode Dennis and Ashleigh discuss the falling birth rates all over the world and what the possible causes and ramifications are.
The dip in global population is something that's been gaining attention as of late, but mostly in the abstract. Something concrete in that dip is about to come due this fall, a staggering drop in the number of available 18+ year olds for the traditional college path. The first bellwether in what my guest for this episode labeled in a piece that, America is about to go over the ‘demographic cliff'. Journalist Jon Marcus, joins for this episode to explore the intersection of demographic shifts, higher education, and the implications for the workforce. The conversation highlights the decline in birth rates, the resulting impact on college enrollment, and the broader economic consequences of college closures. We also get into the cultural perceptions of the value of a college degree and the challenges faced by institutions in adapting to these changes. Before ending on potential strategies for colleges to navigate the impending demographic cliff and its effects on education and the economy.
In this episode of Wake Up, Look Up, Pastor Zach explores a surprising link between rising therapy culture and falling birth rates. Prompted by a recent New York Times op-ed, he unpacks how processing past trauma can lead to fear of parenting—and why the gospel offers a better way. With biblical insight and pastoral care, Zach reminds us that our hope isn't in perfection, but in Christ, who redeems our past and makes us new.Have an article you'd like Pastor Zach to discuss? An alarming Spanish study found vaccinated pregnant women with COVID-19 had a 13.3% miscarriage rate, compared to 4.5% for unvaccinated women. Is this a cause of the declining birthrate in the USA? A peer-reviewed study in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth examined 156 pregnant women with COVID-19 from 2020-2022. Of the 45 vaccinated women, 13.3% miscarried, compared to 4.5% of the 111 unvaccinated women. Most miscarriages in the vaccinated group occurred in the first or second trimester, raising concerns about mRNA safety. Experts like Naomi Wolf and Nicolas Hulscher call for revising public health guidance on COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women, citing potential reproductive harms. U.S. birth rates have declined since 2019. The general fertility rate was 58.3 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2019, dropping to 56.1 in 2022 and 54.5 in 2023, a record low. Total births fell from 3.7 million in 2019 to 3.59 million in 2023, a 2% decline from 2022. Naomi Wolf, Ph.D., is an independent journalist, co-founder, and CEO of DailyClout.io. There's been a bit of an obsession with declining birth rates lately, particularly on the right. That has sparked conversations about policies that might entice people to have more children. But all the talk seems to ignore the social issues beneath the trend — which might be why policy interventions around the world haven't been able to reverse it. Drew Goins, Molly Roberts and Bina Venkataraman discuss some solutions to falling birth rates and whether it's really the huge problem people are making it out to be.Additional reading:What Trump doesn't know about the cost of raising kidsYou can't bribe and shame your way to more babies

Can you pay people to have kids? On one hand, countries that have beefed up social safety nets and pay people to procreate often see short-term success. But long-term results have been remarkably consistent worldwide: It's very hard to pay people to have children. My guest, writer Meagan Day, joins me today to discuss the recent birth rate data, the growing appeal of opt-out fantasies proffered by both tradwife influencers and the manosphere alike, and what our leaders would be wise to consider—beyond a one-time baby bonus. The Conversation is BACK, and in this episode, we mourn the loss of a beloved crew member. Cap'n is faced with surging infant mortality in his tent and wonders if over vaccinating his seedling caused plant autism. G3 isn't so convinced and tries to dispel this notion and other common myths about germination. So sit back, relax, grab something to smoke on and get ready for a Cultivation Conversation. In recent weeks, the Trump administration has heard a range of proposals to increase the fertility rate in the United States. While taking questions in the Oval Office on Tuesday, April 22, President Donald Trump expressed support for a “baby bonus” that would pay $5,000 per delivery to the women who have children, calling it a “good idea.” Additionally, advocates and policy experts have pitched the White House on scholarship allocations for married people or parents, new government funding for education on conception, and a “National Medal of Motherhood” awarded to women with six or more children.Ad-free podcasts are here! Many listeners have been asking for an ad-free version of this podcast that they could subscribe to — and we finally launched it. It's easy to take growth for granted, for it to seem expected, inevitable even. Every person starts out as a baby and grows up. Plants grow from seeds into food. The economy grows. That stack of mail on your table grows. But why does anything grow the way that it does? In this hour, we go from the Alaska State Fair, to a kitchen in Brooklyn, to the deep sea, to ancient India, to South Korea, and lots of places in between, to investigate this question, and uncover the many forces that drive growth, sometimes wondrous, sometimes terrifying, and sometimes surprisingly, unnervingly fragile.Special thanks to Elie Tanaka, Keith Devlin, Deven Patel, Chris Gole, James Raymo and Jessica SavageEPISODE CREDITS: Reported by - Matt Kielty, Becca Bressler, Pat Walters, Sindhu Gnanasambandun, Annie McEwen, Simon Adlerwith help from - Rae MondoProduced by - Matt Kielty, Becca Bressler, Pat Walters, Sindhu Gnanasambandun, Annie McEwen, Simon AdlerSound design contributed by - Jeremy Bloomwith mixing help from - Jeremy BloomFact-checking by - Emily Krieger and Natalie Middletonand Edited by - Pat WaltersEPISODE CITATIONS:Audio:“The Joy of Why,” (https://www.quantamagazine.org/tag/the-joy-of-why/) Steve Strogatz's podcast.
