Email us at cdncomsense@gmail.com We capitalize the title for a reason this week. Brad Wall joined Ben Mulroney this week to say this election is crucial to the future of Canada, and we'll lay out why that is. Is Mark Carney the candidate of President Trump? Is Danielle Smith a traitor? Did Lewis and Tony offend someone? Your April 1st surprise, and more!
It's a federal election campaign season as we head towards the polls at the end of April. It's on the minds of many of Saskatchewan's leaders, and former Saskatchewan Premier, Brad Wall, is one of them. He joins Evan to speak to the upcoming election.
He was the 14th Premier of Saskatchewan serving between 2007-2018. We discuss the US election, the Saskatchewan provincial election, appealing to families vs ethnicity and why a concession speech is important to pay attention to. Today's podcast: Immigration. Will be, or already is, a major issue in developing provincial elections and the upcoming federal election. An immigration lawyer wrote to me: "our system was working just fine. We based it on getting the top human capital possible. Then came Justin Trudeau, who switched it to get the most votes possible." - Quebec and Ontario want asylum seekers resettled more equally across Canada which Ottawa supports, but B.C. Is already pushing back. Guest: Richard Kurland. Immigration lawyer who has advised both the federal and Quebec governments on immigation policies. Based in Vancouver. Former Alberta premier and federal immigration minister Jason Kenney is highly critical of Justin Trudeau's immigration decisions. Guest: Jason Kenney, Former Premier of Alberta and federal immigration minister We are very close to the 8th anniversary of the introduction of a national carbon tax to Canada and Canadian.s As premiers before and during provincial elections, as well as the dominant national polling leading Conservative Party of Canada and its leader Pierre Poilievre are exercising various means of exiting charging a carbon tax to Canadians and the tax is poised to play a major role in the upcoming federal election we return to the introduction of the national carbon tax by PM Justin Trudeau to Canada's premiers in 2016. After Trudeau finished his sales pitch, then Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall issued his famous three word assessment, "what's the point?" Shortly afterward, as the federal and provincial environment ministers met concerning the carbon tax, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia's ministers walked out of the meeting. Guest: Brad Wall. Former Premier of Saskatchewan Teen gender issues and gender dysphoria. While provinces (Saskatchewan and New Brunswick took the lead) passed legislation enshrining parental rights on such decisions, in Switzerland a teen is being removed from her parents care because of their objection to puberty blockers. Is Canada and cases such as this next? The main theme has become respecting the right of a young child, deemed mature by the medical profession, to make potentially lie-altering medical choices, but not deemed sufficiently mature to make decisions to drive until age 16, or smoke or drink until age of majority. A major election issue in both Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, but what about B.C.? And what about your child? Guest: Scott Taylor. In 1999 Brad wall was elected for the first time as a Sask Party MLA. Within 8 years, Wall would be premier. A free market capitalist and charismatic salesman, over the next decade Wall would weave a new narrative for saskatchewan to understand itself, changing the province's political culture forever.
The closest thing to a dynasty in Canadian politics is in Saskatchewan, where the Saskatchewan Party has governed since 2007. First under Brad Wall and now under Scott Moe, the Sask. Party has dominated in election after election, relegating the New Democrats to the opposition. But polls suggest the race in Saskatchewan could be the closest in decades. Could the dynasty come to an end when the province goes to the polls in October? On this week's episode of The Writ Podcast, I'm joined by Adam Hunter, the CBC's provincial affairs reporter in Regina, to look ahead to Saskatchewan's upcoming campaign.THE NUMBERS: On this week's episode of The Numbers podcast, available for Patreon members here, Philippe and I discuss the latest poll showing the Conservatives narrowly ahead in Quebec. A former president and CEO of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers says the agriculture industry has been hurt by international activist and protest organizations. Tim McMillian, who was also a Saskatchewan cabinet minister in Brad Wall's government, is concerned these same groups are, more then ever before, turning their attention to the farming community. Farmland values continued to trend higher in 2022 as demand for farmland remains high and available supply is low. Higher interest rates and farm input prices were offset by strong cash receipts, mitigating profitability pressures on the demand for farmland.Farm Credit Canada says roughly 40 per cent of Canadian farmland area is rented as renting land is a business approach that offers financial flexibility because the financial cost of renting is often lower than buying. FCC Chief Economist J.P. Gervais says study shows cash farmland rental rates are reflecting a slight increase from drought-stricken 2021 but remain lower than rates in 2020.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today I am so honored and privileged to be joined back by Rebecca Schulz, one of the 2022 UCP Leadership Candidates. Today Rebecca and I discuss her incredible career, along with some of her policy, and the campaign. You can stay up to date with Rebecca on the campaign trail here https://www.rebeccaforleader.ca/ Recorded on 08/02/2022 Rebecca Schulz is the MLA for Calgary-Shaw. She was elected in 2019 and was most recently the Minister of Children's Services. In that role, Rebecca fought for and successfully negotiated a fair deal on childcare with the federal government. The Made-In-Alberta childcare agreement is unique in Canada and critical for seeing Alberta families and children succeed. Rebecca has also served on Treasury Board and several policy and legislative committees. She first got involved in politics in 2009 working in the Premier's Office in Saskatchewan under Brad Wall. Rebecca then chose Alberta to raise her family and was drawn to the united conservative movement. She believes unity in the conservative movement is critical – both at the provincial and federal level – to ensure free-market, pro-growth governments can succeed. Rebecca is an active campaigner and believes that hard work and staying connected with voters – most importantly, door knocking – is the best way to both grow the movement and serve at the ground level. She lives in Calgary with her husband and two children.

Getting to write your own ending is all anyone can ask for in any career, but a politician getting a chance to go out on their own terms is really incredible. This week's guest had a successful run as the Premier of Saskatchewan, leading a new party on a decade long run in power and walking away while on top. People thought there was more in store for Brad Wall, politically and in the public eye, but as you will hear on this episode, he knew the day he called it that his political life was over. Now, as he tries other things in the private sector, he talks about his children, his wife and what they plan to do in the future together. A new book crossed my desk a few weeks ago now and I knew it was coming because there were a series of articles are written over a recent years by the Frontier Center for Public Policy drilling down on certain parts of the Divine government legacy. Divine led the first conservative government since the Depression era. Grant Devine becomes the Premier of Saskatchewan and replaces a long time NDP government in the largest sweep in Saskatchewan political history. The NDP resurged and overwhelming defeats Grant Devine in 1991 and govern uninterrupted until Brad Wall in 2007. The new book that is now out from the Frontier Centre for Public Policy is So Much More We Can Be: Saskatchewan's paradigm shift and the final chapter on the Divine government 1982 to 1991. For a lot of us in the age of those who remember the Divine years and politics and even those of you too young to remember when you say grab Divine government you remember how it ended the largest political scandal in Saskatchewan history involving an expense account fraud. This book provides a deeper look on the effective the Divine government had and drills down on the paradigm shift it had on Saskatchewan. Co-authored by the names you will know well writers and Edward Willett, Joe Ralco, and Gerard Lucyshyn.

Colter Wall is our Listener Recommendation today from Pete in Harpenden. Pete has introduced us to this remarkable young man's music for which we are very grateful. Colter was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. He is actually the son of the 14th Premier of Saskatchewan, Brad Wall. Whilst growing up Colter was already listening to a lot of country music including Johnny Cash. As a result of this, you can hear these influences in this track. At the age of 13 Colter began playing guitar covering songs by bands such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. When he was 15 years old Colter heard Bob Dylan's track Don't Think Twice, It's All Right. As a consequence of that he started writing songs as opposed to just playing guitar. He describes his music as a mix of blues, folk and Americana. In this track we play here Colter is joined by The Dead South. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4l4gdhPqh3E Jonathan Richman and The Velvet Underground Jonathan began writing his own songs in the mid-1960s and quickly became infatuated with The Velvet Underground. Consequently, Jonathan moved from Boston to New York City in 1969. He lived on the sofa of The Velvet Underground's manager Steve Sesnick and tried desperately to break into the professional music scene. Failing to do so, Jonathan moved back to Boston. It did get better for him though. I don't write really, I just make up songs. Jonathan soon formed the photo-punk band The Modern Lovers. They quickly became influential. Recording in 1972 under the tutelage of John Cale, The Modern Lovers recorded a number of demos. Out of this came the seminal Pablo Picasso and Roadrunner (a two chord homage to The Velvet's Sister Ray) which went onto to influence, among others, The Sex Pistols. Because of this Jonathan became known as The Godfather of Punk in the 1970s UK Punk Explosion. Post-breakup of the band he released the album The Modern Lovers (1976) which contained both Pablo Picasso and Roadrunner which at the time was a strange album indeed sitting in the charts where prog-rock and glam were the norm. Jonathan still performs his whimsical, wide-eyed, child-like music to this day. However, he only plays acoustically, apparently to protect his hearing.

Terri-Lynne McClintic's move to a lower-security Indigenous healing lodge is considered a travesty of justice by many. It is, however, not too unusual a decision from Correctional Services Canada. Meanwhile in Ontario, the Ford government will not proceed with raising minimum wage in 2019, and Alberta small business confidence is the lowest in the nation. Justin Trdueau's decision to sneak through the fact that talks with the premiers on equalization were off isn't sitting well out west. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe had proposed a number of changes to the system that he feels does not benefit his province. Moe and other premiers were supposed to meet with Trudeau and have discussions in the spring. Now those talks are off and the system that helps Quebec and the Maritime provinces stays in place. That also happens to be the area the Liberals have their power base. The move has generated outrage in Western Canada and former Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says Western alienation is on the rise under Trudeau.

The Panama Papers scandal is all over the news, but what are the implications for the environment, and possibly more importantly why does no one seem surprised and what does that say about our society? We also discuss the first CEO jailed for actions taken as a CEO in the USA, Donald Blankenship former head of Massey Energy and the recent third-term election for Brad Wall's government in Saskatchewan. In the final section, we talk about renewable energy opportunities in Canada compared to the supposedly irresistable opportunities of continuing to invest in oil. Supposedly some pipeline might bring 130 or so jobs! Guess what... there's 70,000 potential jobs in Alberta for solar jobs alone in the next 25 years. The bonus show, hosted by Sabina Hyseni and Brenna Owen discuss Trudeau's comments about how supposedly oil and climate change don't conflict, and Catherine McKenna's comments about how NOT investing in oil threatens national unity.
