"The women have been very intuitive. They know when something's not right. And I give credit to the patients for not listening to folks telling them that there's nothing wrong." - Dr. Robert Whitfield If you've ever felt like your body was trying to tell you something but medical professionals dismissed your concerns, what would it mean to finally have validation and a path forward? I've been wanting to have this conversation for years, but I waited until I could sit down with the right expert - someone who would validate what so many women have been experiencing but were told was "all in their heads." When I connected with Dr. Rob Whitfield, a world-renowned holistic plastic surgeon who's become a leading voice in breast implant illness women are facing, I knew we had to dive deep into this topic that's affecting thousands of women but still isn't being taken seriously by many in the medical community. What started as Dr. Whitfield treating cancer patients led to a groundbreaking discovery - he was finding infections around breast implants that weren't showing up in standard lab tests. This revelation changed everything and led him to develop advanced testing protocols, which revealed that 29% of explant specimens had bacterial contamination. But here's what really struck me: 83% of his patients have genetic variations that make them poor detoxifiers, which means their bodies simply can't handle the toxic burden that implants can create. The transformation stories he shared - women getting their energy back, brain fog lifting, chronic fatigue disappearing - made me realize this isn't just about breast implants, but about any foreign object our bodies are trying to cope with. What you'll learn: How to identify if you're at genetic risk - why 83% of women with implant illness have specific detox pathway problems and what this means for your health decisions The simple glutathione taste test - a revealing at-home assessment that shows whether your body is overwhelmed with toxins (this one blew my mind!) Why standard infection tests miss the problem - how Dr. Whitfield discovered bacterial contamination that regular labs couldn't detect, and what this means for all implant patients The SHARP protocol for recovery - actionable steps you can take before considering explant surgery to support your body's natural healing processes Which implants carry higher risks - the surprising truth about textured vs. smooth implants and what puts some women at greater risk Essential pre-surgical optimization strategies - how to prepare your detox pathways and reduce inflammation, whether you're considering explant or any other surgery The connection between implants and autoimmune symptoms - why fatigue, brain fog, and joint pain might not be "just perimenopause" after all Practical detox support for implant patients - specific supplements, lifestyle changes, and environmental modifications that can make a dramatic difference Love the Podcast? For years, the largest silicone or gummy bear implant available capped at 800cc. We break that down in this episode of Plastic Surgery Untold. It left patients who wanted, or needed, more fullness with only one option — saline implants, which often sacrificed softness for size. Now, with the arrival of Mentor Enhanced breast implants, patients have the option to go beyond 800cc — all the way up to 1450cc — while still enjoying the benefits of a gel implant. Originally developed for breast reconstruction, these implants are FDA-approved for that use and can also be used off-label in cosmetic surgery. This opens the door for both reconstruction and aesthetic patients who have limited natural breast tissue or who simply want a fuller look. Key things to know: Mentor Enhanced implants expand size options past 800cc, up to 1450cc. They were first designed for reconstruction, where larger volumes are often needed. Softer than overfilled saline implants, they keep the benefits of a gel implant. Not every patient is a candidate — safety, tissue limits, and support options like internal bras must be considered. This episode of Plastic Surgery Untold breaks down what these new implants mean for patients, the pros and cons of going larger, and how to know if this option might be right for you.

Breast implants have come a long way, and on this episode of Plastic Surgery Untold we're breaking it all down. From saline implants to today's 6th generation cohesive gel implants, the options available now are more versatile than ever. Each type comes with unique advantages, and the right choice depends on your body, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals. Saline implants offered safety and flexibility with volume adjustments, but also came with firmness and rippling. Fifth generation gummy bear implants introduced highly cohesive gel for softness and shape, reducing rippling and improving results. Now, the sixth generation implants build on this progress with 100% fill, progressive gels, and advanced shell technology, giving patients more natural results and surgeons greater control. At the end of the day, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Some patients may benefit from the structure of 6th generation Motiva implants, while others may prefer a different option based on their anatomy or desired outcome. The key is finding what's best for you — and that's what we help patients decide every day. Key takeaways from this episode: Saline implants provided safety and flexibility, but were firmer with higher rippling. Fifth generation gummy bear implants brought softness, safety, and customization. Sixth generation implants combine natural movement with structure, helping address challenges like weight loss changes and rippling. Stay tuned to Plastic Surgery Untold for more insights as we explore the world of cosmetic surgery, the evolution of breast implants, and how technology continues to expand patient options.

He emphasizes the importance of surgeons taking time to understand their patients' vision of what looks natural to ensure a result that aligns with their expectations. They also cover incision placement preferences, including options Dr. Anderson avoids and why. The conversation dives into breast implant illness—highlighting the need for more data, the importance of informed consent, and why surgeons should maintain an open, supportive dialogue. For patients seeking breast volume without implants, Dr. Anderson explains alternatives like auto augmentation, especially for those who have experienced weight loss or age-related volume changes. They also discuss when a breast lift may be the best option and why choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon is essential for safe, high-quality results.Key Topics Covered:What defines the “Midwest aesthetic” in plastic surgeryHow Dr. Anderson personalizes breast implant consultationsIncision placement options and surgeon preferencesUnderstanding breast implant illness and informed decision-makingAlternatives to implants, including auto augmentationAddressing pseudoptosis and when a lift may be necessaryThe importance of choosing a board-certified plastic surgeonTune in now to get expert insights into breast augmentation, alternatives to implants, and the importance of patient-centered care in plastic surgery!Follow Dr. Eric Anderson on Instagram @dr.ericwandersonSchedule a consultation: Impressions Chicago ContactDr. Anderson's Profile: About Dr. Eric AndersonDo you want help planning your surgery? Do you have breast implants? Have you thought about getting them or do you know others with them?  The conversation about breast implants' impact on health is a real one for a lot of women. We get into all the cases: You have implants and feel fine  You have implants and are feeling symptoms you have just chalked up to menopause  Whether for yourself, or to share with a friend or daughter, this one doesn't end with breast implants. It only starts there.  Stay all the way to the end for the no-cut facelift details!    My Guest: Dr. Robert Whitfield, MD is AMERICA'S BREAST IMPLANT ILLNESS EXPERT™ with over 25 years of experience as a plastic surgeon and more than 16 years board-certified. He specializes in Breast Implant Illness (BII), explant surgery, and advanced cosmetic procedures like his signature “No-Cut” Facelift. He is also the creator of SHARP (Strategic Holistic Accelerated Recovery Program)—a protocol designed to reduce inflammation and support both pre- and post-surgical healing. Dr. Whitfield earned his medical degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, followed by surgical training and a plastic surgery residency at Indiana University Medical Center, and a microsurgery fellowship in Nevada. He later taught at the Medical College of Wisconsin before moving to Austin in 2012. He began private practice in 2017.   Questions We Answer in This Episode: [00:07:42] What is Breast Implant Illness (BII)? [00:08:01] What are the BII signs and symptoms? [00:08:43] Why does BII occur, and how common is it? [00:15:36] What to do if you suspect you have BII? What tests are available? Is there a holistic approach? [00:22:52] Is it covered by insurance?  [00:22:36] How is BII treated? [00:30:11] What is the No-cut Facelift?   What is Breast Implant Illness (BII)? Chronic inflammatory response to breast implants. Implants are foreign bodies which may cause ~29% chance of bacterial contamination, not mold.   What are the Symptoms? Brain fog Fatigue and loss of motivation Gastrointestinal issues (e.g. bloating) Joint pain Hormonal imbalance Thyroid dysfunction   What to Do If You Suspect BII? Educate yourself through long-form content and patient stories Consider testing for: Detox capabilities Hormonal panels Gut health and infections Look into explant surgery with comprehensive detox and recovery (e.g. SHARP protocol)   The No-Cut Facelift Designed to lift and rejuvenate without surgery or visible scars The Procedure: Fiber optics for deep neck tightening FaceTite (radiofrequency tightening beneath the skin) Micro-coring: removes tiny pieces of skin to tighten surface without visible scars Benefits: Natural results with minimal scarring Boosts collagen production Customizable depending on the patient's skin, hormones, and detox status   Key Takeaways BII is real and often overlooked, frequently mistaken for menopause or autoimmune disorders. Chronic inflammation and bacterial contamination (not mold) are major culprits. A new biomarker test (oxylipin 10-HOME) could soon improve diagnosis. Personal genetics, lifestyle, and environmental exposure significantly influence risk. Explant surgery should be holistic, addressing toxins, hormones, and gut health before and after. No-Cut Facelift, a minimally invasive facial rejuvenation, is a safer, scar-free alternative to traditional facelifts, emphasizing natural results.   Connect with Dr. Robert: Website of Dr. Robert Facebook - Dr. Robert Whitfield Instagram - @breastimplantillnessexpert YouTube - @breastimplantillnessexpert Podcast - Apple Podcasts - Explant Breast Surgery & Recovery   Other Episodes You Might Like: Previous Episode - Is This Perimenopause or Something Else?
