Send us a textStart off the new year with a fresh take on a coleslaw salad featuring shredded brussels sprouts and a vinaigrette dressing. For this episode, Heather tried to locate an Asian slaw recipe she loved, but it had disappeared from her Pinterest feed. This is a good reminder to us all to save recipes we love offline! The recipe she tried for this episode didn't quite measure up in her opinion. We have notes! Brussels sprouts tend to have a bit more of a bitter flavour to cabbage, and in our opinion, are chewier in texture. The salad is a mix of brussels sprouts and green cabbage and it does have some really delicious add-ins, like mango, cucumber, sesame seeds, almonds and grapes. The dressing may be where this falls flat. What are your thoughts? Send us a message or comment on our social posts for this episode - we'd love to hear from you! Back on episode 200, the Ask Me Anything episode, someone asked if I would do an episode on growing Brussels sprouts. I said no at the time because I hadn't yet successfully grown them but indicated it may be soon because Brussels were having a moment in my garden this spring and it was looking good. Well, here we are and we're talking Brussels because I managed to successfully grow and harvest a summer crop from a spring planting and have round two of seedlings started already for planting soon for a fall harvest. So, today on Just Grow Something, we're talking Brussels sprouts! The background of the plant, how to grow it, what pests and disease plague it, and how to harvest and store. It's a full blown crop specific episode that will hopefully demystify growing these teeny cabbage look-a-likes in your own garden. Let's dig in! Tried again at fermenting. This time cucumbers and a jar of nectarines. I'm pretty sure I've got the formula for fermenting down…1 and a half teaspoons of salt per one cup of water. I used the wrong kind of cukes…they got mushy. And the nectarines were too ripe and melted to juice water, stringy fibers, and floating nectarine skins. Smaller cukes and a bit less ripe for the fruit…next experiment will be to ferment Asparagus and a jar of Brussels Sprouts this weekend. Our Christmas Day special programme is devoted to the Brussels sprout, with some incredible women for whom they're playing a key role in their working lives. As a nation we eat more sprouts than any other country in Europe but it's a vegetable that, like marmite, divides opinion. Originally from the Middle East, they came to Europe as an export of the Roman Empire. We hear how they became known as Brussels sprouts with the head of the Royal Horticultural Society Clare Matterson and the food historian Dr Sue Bailey. Plant pathologist Dr Lauren Chappell and the brassica research expert Dr Rachel Wells explain how sprouts are being engineered to taste sweeter and withstand climate change. Nutritionist Charlotte Hunter says the phytoestrogens in these mini cabbages mean women should be eating more of them. And for ideas about how to cook your sprouts, chef and broadcaster Andi Oliver and her daughter Miquita are on hand, as well as the chef Rosalind Rathouse.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Studio Manager Neva Missirian

Listen to the wind bloooow. And listen to me talk about why I disagree with the wind almost entirely. Also the origins of Brussels Sprouts and something that will forever change how you think of rabbits. Enjoy :)
Have you noticed that Brussels sprouts are more popular than ever? I used to hate them; now I order them in restaurants whenever I can. Here's what happened: in 1998, a Dutch scientist named Hans van Doorn identified sinigrin and progoitrin as chemicals that made the vegetable taste bitter. Dutch seed companies then bred these chemicals out. By the 2010s, Brussels sprouts didn't taste bitter and became popular with culinary celebrities and then with the general public. Now consider a second scientific discovery that changed the world in surprising ways: last Tuesday saw the sixty-third anniversary of “the pill.” How has it changed American society in dramatic and fundamental ways? Part of the entrepreneurial mindset is to have thick skin and we're diving into how develop that as a business owner. Before we start, be sure to grab the free workbook that goes along with this episode. One day when I was in fourth grade, I came home crying because the boys were calling me Brussels Sprouts and Four Eyes. My mom told me sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you.I look back now and realize two things.First, the name Brussel Sprouts was actually kind of funny since my maiden name was Russell. Second, rather than my mom telling me that I wasn't a brussel sprout or that my thick pink rimmed glasses made me pretty, she simply told me that these names physically weren't doing any damage and I could decide how the bully's words impacted me.My mom gave me my power back. With that silly saying, I decided how I was going to handle the name calling. My emotions were up to me and I could control them.In that moment, I developed thicker skin. Skin that allowed me to decide whose words mattered, and if what they said actually held any merit.Read more HERE.

On this episode, we bring you a story written by Dr. Jane Marks, a conservation ecologist and professor of Aquatic Ecology at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Jane came to Writing Class Radio with the goal of making her academic writing more personal. What she didn't realize is that writing class, specifically writing personal essays, forces the narrator to go deep and ask the question WHY? Why am I writing this? Why does anyone care? Why is this important to me? Why do I care so much about what people think?Jane's story is called, Hating Brussel Sprouts Is Not My Biggest Problem. It could have been called The More Things Change, the More Brussels Sprouts Stay the Same. She wrote this essay in First Draft, worked on it in Second Draft, and when Jane felt she had answered the whys, she submitted it to the podcast. Jane has been taking classes with Writing Class Radio for almost two years. Until we read her bio, we had no idea what a badass she is. Jane TOTALLY downplays her brilliance! Jane Marks was featured as the lead scientist in the PBS documentary, A River Reborn: The Restoration of Fossil Creek, narrated by actor Ted Danson and she co-produced the video documentary Parched: The Art of Water in the Southwest.
