S5 EP06: Connecting Children to Country: Urban Nature Play with Aboriginal Perspectives

Educator Yarns with Jessica Staines

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2025 23:17

In this episode of Educator Yarns, Jess Staines speaks with Linda Wilson, a dedicated early childhood teacher at Sentia Early Learning in Melbourne CBD. Originally from Sweden, Linda shares how her childhood experiences exploring Swedish forests shaped her deep appreciation for nature as a teacher and guide. Now living and working on Wurundjeri Country, Linda beautifully intertwines her background in Nordic Forest pedagogy with Aboriginal perspectives in her teaching practice. Despite being based in Melbourne's urban centre, Linda has led her kindergarten children on more than 30 excursions to connect with Country, learn about local Aboriginal history, and develop meaningful relationships with the land. Her approach demonstrates how educators can follow children's natural curiosity to explore Aboriginal perspectives, even in city-based settings. Linda's journey from knowing very little about Aboriginal culture upon arriving in Australia to embedding it meaningfully in her practice offers valuable insights for educators seeking to deepen their understanding and approach to cultural connections. Key Takeaways: The Swedish approach to early childhood education emphasises consistent time in nature, with some kindergartens located entirely outdoors where children cook on open fires and engage with natural resources. Revisiting the same natural spaces repeatedly is crucial for deepening children's connection and learning, allowing them to move beyond initial excitement to more meaningful engagement. Linda's personal experience of spending days exploring Swedish forests as a child shaped her teaching philosophy and her belief that nature can provide a grounding, calming influence in our fast-paced society. Children's questions about their local environment (like "Who made the Yarra River?" and "Where does it flow?") can serve as powerful starting points for exploring Aboriginal perspectives and connections to Country. The Aboriginal 8 Ways of Learning framework, particularly the 'land links' approach, provides a valuable structure for educators wanting to connect teaching through culture rather than just about culture. Each year, Linda's program focuses on different aspects of Country based on the children's interests—from the Yarra River's history to food sources at Birrarung Marr to land caring at Port Phillip Bay. Despite challenges in maintaining ongoing relationships with local Aboriginal communities in urban settings, educators can access ethical resources like the mapping tool developed by Melbourne Council in collaboration with Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples. Children in urban settings can develop meaningful connections to Country through regular excursions that help them recognise the Aboriginal history and significance of familiar places. There is a natural synergy between nature-based pedagogies (like the Swedish forest school approach) and Aboriginal perspectives on connection to land that educators can draw upon in their practice. Stories such as that of Bunjil the Eagle become powerful tools for children to understand Creation stories and develop respect for Traditional Owners, even when learning occurs primarily in urban environments. Linda Wilson's journey from the forests of Sweden to teaching on Wurundjeri Country demonstrates how educators can weave together different cultural approaches to nature-based learning. By following children's natural curiosity, revisiting significant places, and drawing on ethical resources, educators can foster meaningful connections to Country even in urban settings. As you reflect on your own practice, consider how you might incorporate regular experiences on Country that allow children to develop deeper relationships with the land and greater understanding of Aboriginal perspectives. How might you use mapping tools and local resources to enhance your knowledge and confidence in embedding Aboriginal perspectives in your program? Access the episode resources here.

Channel Nine has recently been defending itself against accusations it intentionally altered a photo of Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell to make it more revealing. The news organisation claimed the edit was not a human error but rather due to AI's automation within Photoshop. Rob sat down with Dr TJ Thomson, senior lecturer at RMIT, to see how credible Channel Nine's claim is. Recently, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an order rebutting Israel's denials, with the binding of its "Israel must". Grace spoke with Dr Awni Etaywe, a linguistics lecturer at Charles Darwin University discussing the ongoing ICJ's South Africa-Israel court case, looking at the linguistic aspect of the binding with "Israel must", and the prejudice Israel claims with this decision. Dr Etaywe is also a forensic linguistic researcher, focusing on terrorism, incitement to hatred, radicalisation and genocide, and digital deviance. He was a former United Nations expert on missions and observer of human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Later today (February 12) a protest will be held outside the Egyptian consulate to protest the country's complicity in Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Rob spoke with Mohammad Helmy, a former board member of the Islamic Council of Victoria and a Greens member to examine how Egypt is complicit and how it benefits from supporting Israel's killing spree.Protest Against Egpyt's Complicity When: February 12, 12 pm Where: 50 Market St, Melbourne CBD How to show support? Please attend to show your support for a free Palestine if you can. Acknowledgement of Country// Headlines// Hume For Palestine is a community action group made up of residents of Hume Council, and is currently demanding the immediate closure of a local manufacturer in Campbellfield, Heat Treatment Australia (HTA). The 'defence' department states that HTA provides crucial heat treatment process for components of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, which are being used by the israeli occupation force (IOF) in the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. We were joined today by Hume For Palestine member Waseem Razvi to discuss the campaign. Waseem is the founder of Islamic Research + Education Academy and an activist at Alliance Against Islamophobia, which works to challenge Islamophobia, assisting and empowering affected individuals and communities.// Amber, a white queer trans person based in Naarm, caught up with Priya yesterday to talk about autonomous queer and trans resistance against the pinkwashing of cops, corporations and colonialism at pride in the wake of a successful but brutally policed protest against the inclusion of Victoria Police in the annual Midsumma parade last Sunday. At this event, queer and trans community members were violently assaulted by cops at the march, with footage circulating of protestors being slapped and choked by police. Since Sunday, radical queer and trans groups including Queer Killjoys and Trans Queer Solidarity have published some important reflections on exposing pinkwashing and reclaiming queer and trans self-expression from the predatory creep of diversity and inclusion approaches to interconnected forms of systemic violence. RISE have consistently called for a boycott of Midsumma given the festival's pinkwashing of policing, Australia's immigration detention system, and the images of Australia's major political parties - you can read their 2024 statement here. Trust us, our pink dollars are better spent on local initiatives that genuinely support our communities, including Beyond Bricks and Bars, fundraisers organised by Husk Housing Support and on the work that RISE does for queer and trans ex-detainees.// Larrakia, Kungarakan, Gurindji and French writer and performer Laniyuk joins us to continue the conversation started with Phuong on this week's episode of Tuesday Breakfast about the campaign to return Lee Point to Larrakia care. In this interview, Laniyuk and Priya discuss the history of the Australian and US defence forces' militarised occupation of Larrakia Country and serious concerns about government claims about consultation with Larrakia people. Sign the petition to return Lee Point to Larrakia people's care here, and watch some of the storytelling by Larrakia people about their connections to Country and what makes Lee Point so significant here.// Honey joins us with updates from Camp Sovereignty, and we hear a clip of Uncle Robbie speaking during yesterday's live broadcast of Bunjil's Fire from the Camp encouraging folks to come down. One of those companies can be found right here in so-called melbourne. They're known as HTA Global. Rob spoke with Liz from Renegade Activists to talk about how. Come along to protest HTA Global's involvement in Israel's genocide of Palestinians on 11AM this Friday the 9th of February at 43B Lara Way, Campbellfield.Following that interview we revisited  Grace's interview from last week's show with Dr Adrian Farrugia, Senior Research Fellow in the Drugs, Gender and Sexuality program at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at La Trobe University. They discussed whether pill testing is the answer to reducing harm of drug use and Australian youth drug education. We then played a speech by Uncle Robbie Thorpe, a fellow 3CR presenter. at yesterday's Free Palestine rally. You can catch him on the Bunjil's Fire show every Wednesday from 11am to 2pm. This project would see marine life will be subjected to 220-250 decibel explosions of sound, louder than a bomb blast, every 10-12 seconds for several months.  This blasting is deadly for all marine life and can impact all levels of the food chain from its very foundations, killing zooplankton more than a kilometre away, to deafening whales that come to these water to calve every year.Australia's south-east seas are full of marine treasures, from southern right and blue whales, seals and bluefin tuna, to kelp forests and unique deep-sea corals.  The majority of the species are not found anywhere else and are already under threat from climate changes that have seen the water warming 3-4 times the average.Calling for protection for Gunditjmara sea country from seismic blasting for oil and gas is an alliance of groups led by the Southern Ocean Protection Embassy Collective (SOPEC). Thank you for joining me for the 16th episode of Solana Weekly, this is Thomas Bahamas we're going to dive into what happened this last week and what the long term implications are. Solana Price - $19.00 and it kind of seems to be holding up, almost hanging on to support. Big week of news from fed, kind of feeling bearish. We saw some strength at 20, but broke through there and might be seeing the dip from the network outage. SolEth -.0122 - we're dipping vs Eth. Tensor - bringing back the bull for NFT's? Airdrop, liquidity, removing undercutters. What this means. We were under 70k Sol volume for NFT's, and now we're well over 100k with Tensor taking over 30% market share. Overall NFT's are looking great on Solana. Been loving SolSniper to track volumes and Tensor's tools are so good. My concern with Tensor is that it literally turns NFT's into altcoins with pictures. You can just sweep and insta dump without looking at the NFT. Can't tell if this is the future or the end of the generative NFT collection being looked at as art. Mad lads - wl claim 1st wave done. I think it's looking super bullish and I haven't seen a single piece of fud about them or the Backpack wallet. Lily, clayno, geckos all pumping. Clayno's really pumping. Famous Foxes - over 70k/ week in revenue so bullish, they are looking real strong with FFF at 56, TFF at 18. I think they are so ripe for a pump. Also think they could do a Polygon tooling or drop and freaking crush. Shout out to degen mints in Monke Dao, these mfs create degen mints if there aren't any. Smol coin, bidets, screen shotter fractionalized, worms, mug shawty's of hot mug shotted women. The hustle doesn't stop. Monke dao voted down the release of their omc collection. Taking a week to recoup. Floor price seems to track back around 200. I think they were rushing everything anyways. Nft LA coming up - Monke Dao party set, heard Clayno will do another drop. Sol defi: Down horrendously, TVL is bottom of the food chain and now below some chain called “defichain.” Sucks, but we need to rebuild. The value proposition of defi on Solana is super high, but the market is not supporting that. The market is not valuing it this way, so we'll see if it's wrong, or if the uptime issue is a game changer. Eth Denver just finished up, cringy songs but looked like a good time. Seems like the price didn't tank massively, bullish. All quiet on the bonk front.Wallets - backpack is all the rage, also glow wallet is sick and probably the best mobile wallet. You can make any photo into an nft and use ai to generate pics.Ledger continues to suck with Solana and their latest update not connecting to phantom wallets. Leaving the door wide open for a better solution. Solana Phone - Q1 is ending soon and we should be seeing an announcement about availability. Saw a Bankless guy posting about issues with Uniswap not being able to get their wallet approved on Apple and went to say Solana Phone solves this, but it had already been raided. This is going to be a game changer. I still want to see some sort of sick defi way to fund the phone. Like lend Sol, borrow USDC, pay off monthly. I might just do something like that myself to talk about it. Bitcoin available on Solana, WBTC is back from Jump. Could this add to defi TVL? Yes. GBTC - Greyscale going to battle with the SEC, I think in order for the whole crypto market to heal we need a win here. Seems like they came out on the offensive and we saw the discount vs btc increase over 10% because of it. I think this is bullish for BTC and trickles down across the whole market. Thank you all and as Bunjil from Lily says all the time “Let's get this s**t.” This is a public episode. Uncle Rick Nelson is a Jaara Jaara Elder whose homeland is the land of Dja Dja Wurrung people. Uncle Rick’s father is Uncle Brien Nelson, who is a significant figure in the Dja Dja Wurrung community. Uncle Rick is also a direct descendent of Henry ‘Harmony’ Nelson, who is an apical Elder of the Dja Dja Wurrung. Uncle Rick begins with a Welcome to Country ceremony, or what early settlers called ‘Freedom of Bush’, before discussing his role with the water pipeline that runs from the Grampians through central Western Victoria, where he acts as an advisor in regards to the protection of local Aboriginal sites. Uncle Rick also discusses the nuances of the Dja Dja Wurrung language and the importance of the two moieties, Bunjil the Eagle and Waa the Crow, to the cultural life of the Dja Dja Wurrung, as well as the mythology behind these moieties. He also tells the story of the devastating effects of early colonisation on the people of the Kulin nation as well as the country, with the introduction of 100,000 head of sheep and the same number of cattle, and the arrival of 60,000 white men within four years of European settlement. We then discuss the protectorate system that was set up in Victoria in an attempt to protect the Aboriginal people from the early settlers and how the descendants of Dja Dja Wurrung can trace their ancestry back to the Franklinford protectorate, which at the time was described as ‘a successful failure’.
