Happy Eurovision New Year! We start our 10th Season (sidebar: WHAT?!) catching up on the planning for 2027 as Bulgaria prepares to host the big event for the first time.

Die viertgrößte Stadt Bulgariens wird im kommenden Jahr Schauplatz des Eurovision Song Contest 2027. Burgas hat sich gegen Sofia durchgesetzt und richtet aus - aber warum? Denn eigentlich war die Stadt am Schwarzen Meer nur Außenseiter im Rennen um die Austragung. Allerdings hat man mit der Arena Burgas eine Halle zu bieten, die erst 2023 eröffnet wurde und eine Show wie den ESC austragen kann. Wie sieht es aber mit dem Rest der Stadt aus? Wie ist die Infrastruktur, wie sind die Hotelkapazitäten und wie kommt man da überhaupt hin? Warum die Wahl auf Burgas fiel und was die Stadt zu bieten hat, erklärt ARD-Korrespondent Oliver Soos aus dem Studio Südosteuropa.Über Jahre leitete Pele Loriano ein erfolgreiches Schweizer Songwritingcamp und verantwortete die musikalische Strategie hinter den ESC-Siegeracts von 2024, Nemo, und 2025, JJ, maßgeblich mit. Er weiß, worauf es beim Wettbewerb ankommt und ist von nun an in Diensten Deutschlands unterwegs. Er gehört zum fünfköpfigen Musikteam des SWR, das alle Bewerbungen sichtet, die seit dem 15. Juli und noch bis zum 21. September abgegeben werden können. In ESC Update gibt er einen Einblick in seine Arbeit damals in der Schweiz und heute für Deutschland und beantwortet natürlich auch die Frage: Was braucht ein ESC-Siegeract?Außerdem werden vom kommenden ESC an eine ganze Reihe an organisatorischen Dingen anders sein. Zum Beispiel löst ein neues Mindestalter von 18 Jahren die jahrzehntelang gültige Grenze ab 16 Jahren ab. Ein siegreiches Land darf ab sofort keinen ESC mehr ausrichten, sofern es sich in einem bewaffneten Konflikt oder in einer geopolitisch sensiblen und angespannten Region befindet. Dies würde aktuell etwa auf Israel zutreffen. Dazu hat das israelische Unternehmen Moroccanoil sein ESC-Sponsoring mittlerweile beendet. Israel bleibt aber weiterhin Teilnehmerland, deshalb hat die niederländische Rundfunkgesellschaft AVROTROS ihren Boykott erneuert und die ESC-Teilnahme abgesagt. Ein anderer niederländischer Broadcaster könnte aber einspringen.Zusätzlich stehen mögliche Änderungen am Votingverfahren im Raum. So sei es der Wunsch der ESC-Organisatoren, das Publikumsvoting künftig komplett online stattfinden zu lassen, wobei auch mehrere verschiedene Länder gewählt werden müssten - ähnlich wie aktuell schon beim Junior ESC. Dies zitiert die schwedische Zeitung "Aftonbladet" aus einem Schreiben der EBU an die Mitgliedssender. Die größte Überraschung: Burgas ist Host City 2027 – nicht, wie fast alle erwartet hatten, die bulgarische Hauptstadt Sofia, sondern die Stadt am Schwarzmeerstrand. Dazu kommt ein ganzes Paket an neuen Regeln für den Eurovision Song Contest: Das Mindestalter für Teilnehmende steigt von 16 auf 18 Jahre, die Playback-Vorgaben für Backing Vocals wurden präzisiert, erstmals gibt es eine klare Regelung für den Fall, dass die Sicherheit im Siegerland nicht gewährleistet werden kann, die EBU plant ein reines Online-Voting mit gesplitteten Stimmen – und nach sechs Ausgaben endet zudem die Partnerschaft mit Hauptsponsor Moroccanoil. Die drei ordnen jede einzelne Änderung ein, diskutieren die Hintergründe und wagen die eine oder andere Prognose. Etappe des Giro d'Italia 2026 hatte es richtig in sich: Auf den 221 Kilometern von Burgas nach Weliko Tarnowo in Bulgarien wurde das Rennen von Attacken, Regen und einem schweren Massensturz geprägt. Der große Überraschungssieger war der Uruguayer Guillermo Thomas Silva vom Team XDS Astana. Er setzte sich nach einem hektischen Finale im Sprint einer kleineren Spitzengruppe knapp vor dem Deutschen Florian Stork und dem Italiener Giulio Ciccone durch. Mit dem Etappensieg übernahm Silva gleichzeitig auch das Rosa Trikot des Gesamtführenden. Sportlich sorgte vor allem Jonas Vingegaard für Aufsehen. Der Giro-Favorit attackierte am letzten kategorisierten Anstieg rund zehn Kilometer vor dem Ziel und testete damit früh die Konkurrenz. Sein Vorstoß wurde jedoch kurz vor dem Ziel wieder neutralisiert. Überschattet wurde die Etappe allerdings erneut von einem heftigen Sturz auf regennasser Fahrbahn etwa 23 Kilometer vor dem Ziel. Rund 20 bis 35 Fahrer waren betroffen. Besonders hart traf es das UAE-Team: Jay Vine und Marc Soler mussten das Rennen aufgeben. Auch Adam Yates kam zu Fall, konnte aber weiterfahren. Das Rennen wurde zwischenzeitlich neutralisiert. Die Strecke selbst war deutlich anspruchsvoller als zum Auftakt am Freitag: Mehrere Anstiege im Balkangebirge sowie ein technisches Finale mit Kopfsteinpflaster und steilen Rampen sorgten für Selektion im Feld. Was erwartet uns auf der dritten Etappe?Morgen steht zum Abschluss des Bulgarien-Starts eine eher flache 3.
