I hate wearing glasses. Additionally most are UV blocking, which is something I want in my eyes. Should contacts be ditched! What do you or your family do? Choosing a Functional Doc Chris writes: Hello, Long time fan boy... Any advice on picking a good functional medicine doctor in my local area? Google search? Anything to look for, or look out for? I found a local MD with a long time in family medicine, who transitioned to integrative holistic medicine about 10 years ago, and then got an ABoIM about 5 years ago. I can only assume that ABoIM is a board certificate of some kind? Sounds like integrative medicine is similar to functional medicine? I ask because I have become a moody AF little bitch after a year on a statin. My original family doc and my precision health report says the cholesterol is on the risky to highly risky side of things. I have always wanted to get off of the statin, and try the PCSK9 inhibitor you discussed some months back. Finally aiming to start that transition. Any help or advice on doc selection is appreciated! The Mindful Healers Podcast with Dr. Jessie Mahoney and Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang
What is forest bathing? How does forest bathing impact mental health? How does it impact physical health? Nature is medicine. Forest = For Rest There have been many studies to show that forest bathing and simply being in nature is a way to decrease stress and improve well-being. It improves mental and physical health conditions. It impacts both our vital signs and our outlook. Dr. Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmille, MD, FACOG, ABoIM is board-certified in integrative medicine and ObGyn. She has additional certifications in herbal medicine, Ayurveda, and meditation. She is also certified as a Forest Bathing Therapist through The Association of Nature and Forest Bathing and she is the author of The Outdoor Adventurer's Guide to Forest Bathing. In this episode, Doc Suzy shares her compelling and emotional story. She discovered integrative medicine and forest bathing. when she began seeking answers to burnout as an ObGYN on top of navigating having an autistic child and a husband diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. Forest bathing, just like mindfulness, is primarily about noticing. It is also a practice of using all your senses. Listen to the episode to learn how to forest bathe. Suzy recommends a pyramid approach to forest bathing. This means, if possible, we should celebrate the awe and wonder of what we notice in nature amidst significant natural wonders (such as national parks) regularly. A plug to join us in Muir Woods, at Muir Beach, and in the gardens of the Green Gulch Farm and Zen Center for Connect in Nature. Our location is a site of much awe-inspiring nature. This is the last year we will host Connect in Nature in this location. Next year we will be moving this event to a TBD different spectacular spot in nature. Dr. Bartlett Hackenmille explains that we can also practice forest bathing weekly in urban local parks, botanical gardens, arboretums, and/or daily in our backyard. We can even practice nature therapy/nature medicine with a potted plant and/or on a construction site. We highly recommend Suzy's gorgeous book which is full of color pictures and a myriad of invitations to practice forest bathing. How might you like to practice more “nature medicine”? Where could you forest bathe today? This week? This year? Why not forest bathe with us in Muir Woods at Connect in Nature Sept 6-8th. ? If those dates don't work for you, consider signing up to forest bathe with Jessie at a Nicasio Creek Farm Wellness Retreat in October or, November 2024 or at Sagrada Wellness in November 2024, There are also many date options for Pause & Presence nature-based retreats in 2025. Today's Mindful Moment offering is a forest bathing meditation guided by Dr. Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller. For podcast listeners, please find a photo of your ideal forest space for this practice or listen outside. You can find Dr Suzanne at @docsuzy on IG or at her website www.integrativeinitiative.com. Move beyond consuming this amazing podcast. True change happens when you work with us - virtually and/or in-person. If you can't make it to a retreat soon, coach with Jessie virtually 1:1 or in a small group. Coaching also helps you become happier and healthier. www.jessiemahoneymd.com Hire Ni-Cheng, Jessie, or both of us to give a keynote talk or lead a workshop or breakout session on any topic covered in the Mindful Healers Podcast. Menopause is not just about gaining weight, having hot flashes, and not sleeping well. It's also about the decline of our cellular health, which contains these essential organelles called mitochondria. I've talked about mitochondria in passing on numerous podcasts, and dedicated a full episode on Urolithin A, a gut metabolite that induces mitophagy, or the cleaning up of our mitochondria, so be sure to check that one out. As we age and start the process of menopause, which includes perimenopause, the strength, efficacy, and quantity of our mitochondria decline. So, the trick is to support these cellular powerhouses with lifestyle interventions (sleep, nutrition, stress management, exercise, mindfulness) and personalized supplements. Here's what the science shows:1. A midlife woman's gut health, her microbiome, changes during perimenopause. 2. That optimal gut health is vital to overall health and longevity. 3. Poor gut health, and menopause, open the door to chronic disease states.I tell my clients all the time, “You're only as healthy as your cells”. During midlife, it is very important to support cellular health and energy so that you can reach your health goals. If your cells are struggling, you will struggle. Hair loss, weight gain, skin issues, low energy, brain fog, and stress are all signs of declining cell health. My guest today is an expert in cellular health. Dr. Monisha Bhanote, MD, FCAP, ABOIM, best-selling author of The Anatomy of Wellbeing, is an esteemed physician with quintuple medical board certifications, distinguishing her among the nation's luminaries in integrative medicine, functional culinary medicine, cytopathology, and anatomic/clinical pathology. Her brainchild, WELLKULÅ, combines ancient wisdom with modern mind-body science to envision a path toward optimizing health and longevity. Her interests include nutrition and the microbiome, the role of stress and inflammation in disease manifestation, applying mindfulness as a lifestyle practice, and cancer and disease prevention. I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Dr. Jen Pfleghaar, DO, ABOIM @integrativedrmom on her podcast recently. Dr. Jen is very passionate about health. She completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine. Healthcare is often symptom-focused and reactive, rather than prevention-focused and proactive. Patients and physicians rarely discuss nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle change, and instead focus mainly on diagnosis and treatment of disease. Many clinicians feel unprepared to discuss the safe and effective use of dietary supplements or herbal medicines, or how to help patients incorporate relaxation or mind-body practices into their lives. She believes it is important to take the time with each patient and develop a strong relationship. Dr. Graham is a public health scientist, health service researcher, TED speaker, food activist and Chef. Dr. Graham believes medicine needs a FRESH start. Together with his wife, they founded FRESH Medicine and FRESH Med U. FRESH Medicine is an integrative health and wellness center located in NYC. FRESH is an acronym for the five ingredients in their recipe to health: Food, Relaxation, Exercise, Sleep and Happiness. Dr. Graham is the proud son of a farmer and an immigrant born and raised in Jackson Heights in Queens, NYC. A lifelong "food fighter" and a leader in the field of Integrative/Functional and Holistic Medicine he has prescribed “food as medicine” for over 15 years, has taught over 1000 healthcare workers, mostly doctors, how to cook whole food, plant-based meals, and created the first edible rooftop garden on a hospital in NYC. He served as Medical Director of Internal Medicine Primary Care Center, Program Director of Internal Medicine, Director of Integrative Therapies, Head of Employee Wellness for a large healthcare system in New York and provided strategic oversight, direction and leadership across all activities related to the health and wellness, health promotion and disease prevention. When not seeing patients, Dr. Graham trades his white lab coat for chef's whites with the goal of expanding his toolkit both for use as a healthcare provider and as an advocate for a new model of integrative, “food-first” lifestyle-focused healthcare called Culinary Medicine. Dr. Graham serves as the first Chief Health Officer of a food company called Performance Kitchen where he not only advises but also designs medically tailored meals for patients with chronic diseases. This allows doctors to prescribe meals, or “food as medicine” which are covered by Advantage Medicare Plans and hopefully Medicare under Bill H.R.5370 - Medically Tailored Home-Delivered Meals Demonstration Pilot Act. In 2019, he and Julie launched an online self-care "university," called FRESH MED U. FRESH MED U allows people and companies to learn remotely, on their own time, using their intrinsic motivation to achieve their FRESH goals and live healthier and happier lives. In this episode, I'm honored to interview Dr. Apple Bodemer, who is a plant-based Dermatologist. During the interview, we discuss her journey to a plant-based diet, how to improve your skin's health, and much more! Dr. Bodemer has always been fascinated by how different health systems and cultures deal with health and illness. As a dermatology resident, she traveled to India, Nepal, and China to learn more about health care in these regions. In each country, Dr. Bodemer had opportunities to visit traditional hospitals and pharmacies and westernized facilities. The ways traditional and modern approaches to health were combined in these countries fascinated her, and she became more curious about other ways of healing. After Dr. Bodemer finished her Dermatology residency at the University of Wisconsin, she completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine through the University of Arizona. Since then, her clinical practice has focused on combining general dermatology care with the philosophies and tools of integrative medicine. In 2015, when the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM) was approved, Dr. Bodemer took the certifying exam and now serves as a member of the ABOIM. She currently sees patients in an academic setting and can work with dermatology residents and integrative medicine fellows.
