We dove deep into the recent updates from Apple, particularly surrounding the Vision Pro and its software iterations. We opened the conversation by detailing the rollout of Vision OS 2.1.1, a minor yet essential update focused mainly on security patches and bug fixes. As we navigated through the mechanics of these updates, the panel shared their experiences using the Vision Pro. Eric, a Mac aficionado, expressed interest in trying out the Vision Pro, while we highlighted its unique features that enhance user interaction with Mac displays via spatial computing. The discussion noted that even as Apple seeks to innovate with Vision Pro, there remains a perception that the software experience can still seem awkward for new users. Next, we transitioned into a crucial topic of security updates that were rolled out across various Apple devices, including iOS 18.1.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1.1. The severity of the vulnerabilities addressed in these updates became evident through our discussions, emphasizing the importance of staying updated to safeguard personal data. I passionately stressed the necessity for users to implement these updates without hesitation, particularly given the risks involved with outdated software. Jeff shared his saga with HomeKit, discussing ongoing challenges he faced while trying to add new accessories to his setup. This segment turned into a larger discussion on the frustrations of home automation, with every panelist contributing their own stories and insights about the complexities and fragilities of systems like HomeKit. As we explored Jeff's journey, it became clear how critical it is for developers to recognize these user experiences to enhance reliability moving forward. We also touched upon the latest beta releases, highlighting new features including enhanced emoji integrations and AI-driven tools in Apple's ecosystem that promise to enrich user interactions. Marty shared some humorously awkward stories of experimenting with the image playground features, and we reflected on the larger implications of Apple's ongoing beta developments, especially concerning user proficiency and experience. In a more tech-savvy vein, I led a conversation about a recently issued inactivity reboot feature aimed at bolstering security for lost or stolen iPhones, sparked by a researcher reverse-engineering Apple's implementation. The group's discussion unveiled contrasting views about the four-day timeframe for this reboot and whether it truly met user security needs. I shared some insights from my recent experiences with the new Mac Mini powered by M4 Pro, lauding its performance and compact design, while encouraging the audience to consider this impressive offering as an affordable alternative for desktop setups. Finally, we wrapped up the episode reflecting on recent news in the tech world, including Apple's acknowledgment of Billie Eilish as their Artist of the Year and Comcast's latest corporate restructuring. Our conversations were punctuated by humor and camaraderie, reinforcing the community spirit that makes In Touch with iOS so engaging.  Topics and Links In Touch With Vision Pro this week.  Apple Releases visionOS 2.1.1  visionOS 2.2 beta 3 now available to Apple Vision Pro users Apple Vision Pro needs something bigger than a software update | Macworld New Vision Pro Stand UPERGO Dock Stand for Apple Vision Pro Important Security updates iOS 18.1.1 & iPadOS 18.1.1 Security Updates Released PSA: iOS 17.7.2 brings security fixes to older iPhones and iPads Beta this week. iOS 18.2 Beta 4 was released.  Apple Releases Fourth Betas of iOS 18.2 and More With Genmoji, Image Playground and ChatGPT Integration [Update: Public Betas Available iOS 18.2 beta 4: Here's what's new HomeKit Saga. Music Production Made Simple

In this podcast episode of Music Production Made Simple, I discuss hard drives with you for your music production computer. There's two main hard drives we use for our music production computers.. That is Mechanical Hard Drives (HDD), and Solid State Hard Drives (SDD). There are also what's called a "hybrid hard drive" where there's a small amount of SSD built into a Hard Drive to help it run a little faster by "caching" common files for faster loading. Mechanical Hard Drives A mechanical hard drive is more affordable, and is able to be purchased with LOTS of storage space. You simply provide a power cable from your computer's power supply (PSU), and a SATA cable plugs into the HDD and motherboard for the data connections. As I said in this episode, I liked the 5400RPM hard drive, as the noise was not audible in my acoustic computer case to help keep things quiet.. the 7200RPM can be hard audibly. Solid State Hard Drives: At the time of making my music production computer build video, 250GB was like $200-300!!! Now you can get 1TB-2TB for that same price.. (about 5-6 years later..) SSDs are awesome because they are QUIET and FAST. The only problem at the moment is you can't buy them in LARGER sizes like 4TB or 8TB (maybe in the old card-type SSDs).. but they are still pricey. Conclusion.. Hard Drives for Music Producers So I hope the gives you insight to buying hard drives as a music producer. Currently we use an SSD for our main C: drive which is where we install our operating system (Windows for example), and our most important programs and files like FL Studio, Drum Kits, and our main VSTs. For our LARGER files (like my FL Studio courses), we store these on a HDD (Hard Drive) because it's more affordable. Hopefully in the coming years we will be able to just use one hard drive again, but this time on a fast SSD that is affordable, with a reasonable capacity to keep up with all our digital assets nowadays.. By the way, you can checkout my FL Studio Books if you'd like to become a better producer! =========================== GET THIS EPISODE'S RESOURCES: https://itsgratuitous.com/podcast/s2e23-different-hard-drive-types/ ===========================

May 25 - Creating an offsite NAS-backup

Martin Uncut

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2022 13:35

Let's continue the story from this Monday. Should we!? It is fantastic to have a NAS. You do not really have to worry about running out of space. And if you are getting close to that point it is fairly easy to just expand it by adding more drives. Storage is really cheap these days. And it will likely only get cheaper with time - that is relatively speaking. More MB per $ spent - or I should probably say more TB per $ spent.  It is however not only "gold and green forests" - that is a very Swedish expression and would translate to the land of milk and honey. Keeping the data safe is a challenge when the size grows. And this is how I have solved it.  My NAS is in my office - this is available through VPN to my home or via a Road Warrior VPN. I can always get access to my files. It is equipped with 4 4TB drives running in a raid configuration meaning a drive can fail and the data will still be fine. But what if I have multiple disk failures at once or if have a fire or a break in. The data needs to be backed up offsite. 4 x 4TB in raid equates to roughly 10TB of usable disk space.  The approach me (and Michael) solved this was to fix an additional Synlogoy NAS (Michael had a 920+, 4 bay over) and buy a bunch of disk. I bought 3 16TB -- running these in raid will give you close to 28TB of usable disk space. We setup the device and put it in a place that me and Michael both have network access to. Then we can backup our NASes to this unit. That means we can have multiple disk failures, burglaries and fires and the data should still be safe. Don't worry the units are not publicly accessible on the net - VPN access is required to get to the data.  With Synology you can do this in many different ways. The way we did this was to use a Synology backup application called "Hyper Backup" - this runs on my NAS in the office. I configure it to connect to the backup NAS by schedule and backup the files from my NAS according to my choices. I also can encrypt the data on the client side before it is sent to the backup NAS. This means that I can be sure that Michael cannot look into what I have on my NAS and he can be sure that I cannot see his - even though we both have full access to the backup NAS. That is really cool.  Setup on our own NASes was really straight forward. It was even more simple on the backup NAS. There a small application called Hyper Backup Vault is installed - and no configuration is needed. Super easy. And that is a thing I value when it comes to setting things up.  The main issue is now that network connections, especially from my office, is a bit slow. Backup is taking a long time - or at least the first one - after that the application should be doing a delta and thus only backing upp mew files and this speeds the whole process up quite a lot. To protect the networks from overload I also limited or shaped the traffic and in this process I used a few cool tools on the NASes. But I will save that for another episode.  What's next with this backup solution? Well it will have to run for a while so that I can get comfortable with that it is running as it should. It is important that there is not service failures or missed out backups. Then in a few weeks I will do a restoration test. That is what most people forget to do - test that their backups are working and that data can be received out from them up on a failure. I will let you know how that goes. I hope you enjoyed this episode - and if you did - why not recommend it to your best friends!?  Tomorrow, Thursday, is a public holiday, no episode will be released. Imagine the significant amount of data aggregation and synthesis through AI critical in the management of our roadways, traffic flow and emergency response – that also helps power and draw data from many of the mobile and in-car maps we utilize today. Noam paints a picture of the data explosion coming the next few years as more and more smart and autonomous vehicles come online – expected to generate around 4TB of data daily – and the security of that data needs to be planned for today. And yes, the growing ransomware in traffic management threat we also discuss! Noam Maital, Co-Founder and CEO, Waycare Noam Maital is the CEO and a Co-Founder of Waycare Technologies. Did you know that MS Word will open pdf files and try to convert them into an editable form which can be saved as a pdf or docx? The MS Office Android app has this capability as well. Also, if the pdf is on your Google drive then it can be opened with Google Docs. Though it's not as good as MS Word, you can extract the text within the file and edit to your heart's content. ------------------- Ian Barton on Unraid and Antec P101S Mid Tower Case I have upgraded disk capacity a couple of times, which means I have several spare "smaller" drives of 2TB and 4TB. My current setup uses RAID1, which means I need two drives that are mirrored to avoid loss of data if one of them dies. Unraid uses a completely different system. There is one parity drive, which stores information that allows a crashed disk to be restored. You can then add as many other disks as you want, providing that each disk isn't larger than the parity disk. So if your largest drive is 8TB your parity drive needs to be at least 8TB. Unraid isn't free, but you can have a 30 day free trial. Cost is $59 for up to 6 attached disks. There is also support for docker containers and virtual machines. I have had a couple of Antec cases in the past. Unfortunately, they are so ancient they won't fit newer motherboards. Antec cases are well built and have several features e.g. rubber grommets to reduce noise from hard drives. However, the main region I want this case: you can install up to 11 storage drives! Reasons for this are explained in the next post about Unraid. Hardline on the hardware: Microsoft introduces a faster Surface Go 3, Wi-Fi-only Pro X, and more... Also, Mail copy-paste-senden. Mainframe, Performance, Topics Podcast

Here are the show notes for Episode 10 "234U". The show is called "234U" because: We are very happy that we can talk about z/OS V2.3 now that it's been previewed on February 21, 2017. We liked the consecutiveness 2-3-4, and U added works nicely. Mainframe Our "Mainframe" topic was a highlight of some of the newly previewed z/OS V2.3 enhancements! We will surely talk a lot about z/OS V2.3 in podcasts to come. First, it is important to know that z/OS V2.3 will only IPL on an zEC12, zBC12 and higher. Prepare now if you need to. Here's a brief list of the items planned for V2.3 (which is planned to GA on September 29, 2017) System logger's log stream staging datasets can be allocated greater than 4 gigabytes. Data set encryption for z/OS data sets and zFS file systems (policy-enabled), and CF structures (list and cache, with the CFRM policy). zFS: zEDC compression on individual files, and existing and new zFS files systems. Existing zFS while in use! Salvage utility to run online with file system is still mounted Dynamic changes to aggregrate attributes for common MOUNT options, and dynamic changes to sysplex sharing status. New facility (from TSO or UNIX shell) to allow for migration from HFS to zFS, without requiring the "from" file system to be unmounted. email: ability to have an email address in the RACF user profile. JES2 and z/OSMF could use email notification to the user. JES2 JCL, the delimiter keyword (DLM) on SYSIN is extended from 2 to 18 characters long. SCRT is a component delivered in z/OS, with support for enabling ISVs to generate an ISV-unique SCRT report. Auto-starting z/OSMF be default, late in the IPL hopefully after OMVS and TCP/IP are up. The biggest migration action in z/OS V2.3 identified yet. TSO/E support for 8 character userids. Many products require changes to support this, so do planning for this one. Performance Martin had an esteemed guest for our "Performance" topic, Elpida Tzortzatos, Distinquished Engineer from z/OS Development. Martin and Elpida chatted about several important recent advances made in the area of z/OS memory management. Review of UIC (Unreferenced Interval Count), which is how long in seconds a page has remained unreferenced. High count is low contention, low count is high contention. Since moving to large memory (64-bit, zArch), the design changed to reduce the review frequency from 1 sec to 10 seconds. When more memory support was added (128G to 4TB) it was again reduced to not do any UIC updates, other metrics are used to judge contention instead. RMF reports high impact, medium impact, and low impact frames evicted today, for a performance judgement. Customers should be looking at average available memory, and minimum too. Make sure your AFQ can handle workload spikes and SVC dumps. Here is a WSC paper about that. Large frames (1MB and 2GB page sizes): the Dynamic Address Translation (DAT) is on the critical performance path Use the LFAREA specification for 1MB and 2GB frame usage. Performance-wise, it’s just as fast as the iPhone XS. This iPad replaces the older 10.5-inch iPad Pro that Apple’s been selling for $650 up until now $500 for the 64GB model iPad Mini 5 iPad mini now delivers three times the performance and nine times faster graphics. Improved Retina display with True Tone, wide color support, is 25 percent brighter than before. A12 Bionic processor first-generation Apple Pencil support Headphone jack! the same $399 price tag as the previous model.   TUESDAY On Tuesday Apple gave some much needed spec bumps to the iMac, added better RAM and GPU options to the iMac Pro, and even dropped the prices on some of their high-end MacBook Pros! iMac iMac lineup has been updated with Intel's latest 8th-gen and 9th-gen Core processors, including a six-core 8th-gen Core i7 with Turbo Boost, and a monster eight-core 9th-gen Core i9 with Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz (for the 27-inch 5K iMac). Apple says the new i7 brings a 60% performance increase for the 21.5-inch iMac, and up to a 240% for the for new i9 iMac. Radeon Pro Vega graphics options are now available across the new iMac lineup, including Vega 20 for 21.5-inch models and Vega 48 for 27-inch models. Apple advertises up to 80 percent faster graphics performance compared to the previous iMac lineup. New RAM and storage options are also available. Base iMac STILL include a 5400RPM mechanical hard drive… Mac Pro now available with Vega 64X graphics and 256GB RAM Those with a need for speed can now equip the iMac Pro with an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64X graphics card and up to 256GB of RAM for the first time. But be prepared to break the bank Apple drops prices on some high-end MacBook Pros There’s good news for MacBook Pro buyers looking for a lot of storage: Apple has lowered the costs of its most-expensive SSD options. When upgrading your SSD, you can save $200 for the 2TB option, and $400 for the 4TB option. The bad news is that Apple didn’t change prices on any MacBook Pro SSDs that are 1TB or smaller. Putting a 1TB drive in a high-end 15-inch MacBook is still an extra $400 over the cost of a 512GB one, for example. The total package, with 256GB of RAM and everything else as standard, is $10,199. If you add every possible upgrade to the iMac Pro, not including software or a VESA Mount Adapter, it costs $15,699.   WEDNESDAY New AirPods deliver hands-free ‘Hey Siri’ and better battery life Apple’s newest wireless buds are here with a brand new H1 chip that allows for hands-free “Hey Siri.” They also promise better battery life in between charges, and even faster connectivity. An optional Wireless Charging Case is also available, but it’s not cheap. AirPods 2 have the same $159 price tag, or $200 with the wireless charging case. The wireless case a la cart is $79.   With New Unlimited Plan, MoviePass Swears It's Got Its Shit Together Thanks to MacDonald Ted for this glorious story. On Monday, MoviePass announced the new plan, which it is calling “Uncapped.” Under the Uncapped plan, subscribers can watch one 2D film a day, for $19.95 per month. A “limited time” offer gets you that same deal for just $9.95 per month with a one-year commitment. But can we trust MoviePass? Of course they’re playing games in their terms of service. A line in their user agreement gives MoviePass the right to throttle a user’s filmgoing options in the event that an individual’s use of the service has an adverse impact on “MoviePass’s system-wide capacity or the availability of the Service for other subscribers.”

SSD Vs HDD Hard Drives for Graphic Designers

The Design Brief

So SSD Vs HDD Hard Drive for Graphic designers, what is the difference between the two and what is best for your laptop or computer. It comes down to two important details... ►►► Check out the gear discussed in the video links below... Computer with SSD and HDD Combo ► VivoBook Pro ( https://amzn.to/2JrXz5I ) ► HP Omen ( https://amzn.to/2RiTXpo ) ► MSI GS63 Stealth ( https://amzn.to/2OfcwbZ ) External Solid State Hard Drives ► Lacie External SSD ( https://amzn.to/2AAgfNO ) ► Samsung External SSD ( https://amzn.to/2OXaLW9 ) Computers with SSD Only ► Gigabyte Aero 15 ( https://amzn.to/2CPc0zo ) ► MacBook Pro 15 ( https://amzn.to/2DfV6Lo ) ► Dell XPS 15 ( https://amzn.to/2ObuCM8 ) In this video, I want to answer some questions I receive on the channel concerning solid state hard drives vs hard disk drives. A lot of people are wondering the differences between SSD and HDD. Graphic designers are wondering what is best for their laptops and computers. Which type of hard drive should they get? Should they get 256GB of Hard Drive storage or 4TB? Is SSD really more reliable than HDD? Let's jump into it! What is the difference between a solid state hard drive and a hard disk drive? A Solid State Hard Drive has no moving parts. Think about a small USB Drive, Thumb drive, or Memory stick (whatever you refer to them as). This is basically a miniature Solid State Hard Drive. You can add files to it, erase the files, format the drive, etc... and there are no moving parts to perform these actions. The HDD or Hard Disk Drive, however, uses a small disk, a tiny eye (to read the disk) and an arm to move the eye across the disk as it spins round and round. This is how memory is stored, retrieved and then erased. So on each type of drive how is this information retrieved, saved, written, erased, etc... I will give you two scenarios to visualize this process. 1. The Hard Disk Drive: Imagine that I want to know how to spell the word ambiguous, but I am unsure how to spell the word. Is it Ambigus, or Ambiguoos, perhaps it is ahmbiguos...? I look towards my bookshelf spot the Thesaurus or dictionary on the shelf, get up, walk across the room, grab the thesaurus, flip open to the A's and find the word ambiguous with its proper spelling. 2. The Solid State Hard Drive: In this same scenario I want to find out how to spell ambiguous. But rather than getting up and grabbing a thesaurus off the shelf I simply pull out my iPhone and search ambiguous definition. I was not required to get up and search for this information with moving action. I simply search for the result where I was sitting. So let me ask you. Which search technique gave me a faster result. The SSD model. With no moving parts, the storage is not required to "Find" the piece of information. It is simply there and ready to retrieve when searched upon. Another important factor to SSD Hard Drives vs HDD Hard Drives is that they are far more reliable. With no moving parts, the hard drives are FAR LESS likely to crash, wear out, or malfunction. This is very important to me as a graphic designer. I often am working on projects that I CANNOT afford to lose. So having the reliability of an SSD hard drive is extremely reassuring as I am working on my projects. NetBSD 8.0 available, FreeBSD on Scaleway’s ARM64 VPS, encrypted backups with OpenBSD, Dragonfly server storage upgrade, zpool checkpoints, g2k18 hackathon reports, and more. ##Headlines NetBSD v8.0 Released The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 8.0, the sixteenth major release of the NetBSD operating system. This release brings stability improvements, hundreds of bug fixes, and many new features. Some highlights of the NetBSD 8.0 release are: USB stack rework, USB3 support added. In-kernel audio mixer (audio_system(9)). Reproducible builds (MKREPRO, see mk.conf(5)). Full userland debug information (MKDEBUG, see mk.conf(5)) available. While most install media do not come with them (for size reasons), the debug and xdebug sets can be downloaded and extracted as needed later. They provide full symbol information for all base system and X binaries and libraries and allow better error reporting and (userland) crash analysis. PaX MPROTECT (W^X) memory protection enforced by default on some architectures with fine-grained memory protection and suitable ELF formats: i386, amd64, evbarm, landisk. PaX ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) enabled by default on: i386, amd64, evbarm, landisk, sparc64. Position independent executables by default for userland on: i386, amd64, arm, m68k, mips, sh3, sparc64. A new socket layer can(4) has been added for communication of devices on a CAN bus. A special pseudo interface ipsecif(4) for route-based VPNs has been added. Parts of the network stack have been made MP-safe. The kernel option NET_MPSAFE is required to enable this. Hardening of the network stack in general. Various WAPBL (the NetBSD file system “log” option) stability and performance improvements. Specific to i386 and amd64 CPUs: Meltdown mitigation: SVS (Separate Virtual Space), enabled by default. SpectreV2 mitigation: retpoline (support in gcc), used by default for kernels. Other hardware mitigations are also available. SpectreV4 mitigations available for Intel and AMD. PopSS workaround: user access to debug registers is turned off by default. Lazy FPU saving disabled on vulnerable Intel CPUs (“eagerfpu”). SMAP support. Improvement and hardening of the memory layout: W^X, fewer writable pages, better consistency, better performance. (U)EFI bootloader. Many evbarm kernels now use FDT (flat device tree) information (loadable at boot time from an external file) for device configuration, the number of kernels has decreased but the number of boards has vastly increased. Lots of updates to 3rd party software included: GCC 5.5 with support for Address Sanitizer and Undefined Behavior Sanitizer GDB 7.12 GNU binutils 2.27 Clang/LLVM 3.8.1 OpenSSH 7.6 OpenSSL 1.0.2k mdocml 1.14.1 acpica 20170303 ntp 4.2.8p11-o dhcpcd 7.0.6 Lua 5.3.4 ###Running FreeBSD on the ARM64 VPS from Scaleway I’ve been thinking about this 6 since 2017, but only yesterday signed up for an account and played around with the ARM64 offering. Turns out it’s pretty great! KVM boots into UEFI, there’s a local VirtIO disk attached, no NBD junk required. So we can definitely run FreeBSD. I managed to “depenguinate” a running instance, the notes are below. Would be great if Scaleway offered an official image instead  For some reason, unlike on x86 4, mounting additional volumes is not allowed 4 on ARM64 instances. So we’ll have to move the running Linux to a ramdisk using pivotroot and then we can do whatever to our one and only disk. Spin up an instance with Ubuntu Zesty and ssh in. Prepare the system and change the root to a tmpfs: apt install gdisk mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /tmp cp -r /bin /sbin /etc /dev /root /home /lib /run /usr /var /tmp mkdir /tmp/proc /tmp/sys /tmp/oldroot mount /dev/vda /tmp/oldroot mount --make-rprivate / pivotroot /tmp /tmp/oldroot for i in dev proc sys run; do mount --move /oldroot/$i /$i; done systemctl daemon-reload systemctl restart sshd Now reconnect to ssh from a second terminal (note: rm the connection file if you use ControlPersist in ssh config), then exit the old session. Kill the old sshd process, restart or stop the rest of the stuff using the old disk: pkill -f notty sed -ibak 's/RefuseManualStart.$//g' /lib/systemd/system/dbus.service systemctl daemon-reload systemctl restart dbus systemctl daemon-reexec systemctl stop user@0 ntp cron systemd-logind systemctl restart systemd-journald systemd-udevd pkill agetty pkill rsyslogd Check that nothing is touching /oldroot: lsof | grep oldroot There will probably be an old dbus-daemon, kill it. And finally, unmount the old root and overwrite the hard disk with a memstick image: umount -R /oldroot wget https://download.freebsd.org/ftp/snapshots/arm64/aarch64/ISO-IMAGES/12.0/FreeBSD-12.0-CURRENT-arm64-aarch64-20180719-r336479-mini-memstick.img.xz xzcat FreeBSD-12.0-CURRENT-arm64-aarch64-20180719-r336479-mini-memstick.img.xz | dd if=/dev/stdin of=/dev/vda bs=1M (Look for the newest snapshot, don’t copy paste the July 19 link above if you’re reading this in the future. Actually maybe use a release instead of CURRENT…) Now, fix the GPT: move the secondary table to the end of the disk and resize the table. It’s important to resize here, as FreeBSD does not do that and silently creates partitions that won’t persist across reboots gdisk /dev/vda x e s 4 w y And reboot. (You might actually want to hard reboot here: for some reason on the first reboot from Linux, pressing the any-key to enter the prompt in the loader hangs the console for me.) I didn’t have to go into the ESC menu and choose the local disk in the boot manager, it seems to boot from disk automatically. Now we’re in the FreeBSD EFI loader. For some reason, the (recently fixed? 2) serial autodetection from EFI is not working correctly. Or something. So you don’t get console output by default. To fix, you have to run these commands in the boot loader command prompt: set console=comconsole, efi boot Ignore the warning about comconsole not being a valid console. Since there’s at least one (efi) that the loader thinks is valid, it sets the whole variable.) (UPD: shouldn’t be necessary in the next snapshot) Now it’s a regular installation process! When asked about partitioning, choose Shell, and manually add a partition and set up a root filesystem: gpart add -t freebsd-zfs -a 4k -l zroot vtbd0 zpool create -R /mnt -O mountpoint=none -O atime=off zroot /dev/gpt/zroot zfs create -o canmount=off -o mountpoint=none zroot/ROOT zfs create -o mountpoint=/ zroot/ROOT/default zfs create -o mountpoint=/usr zroot/ROOT/default/usr zfs create -o mountpoint=/var zroot/ROOT/default/var zfs create -o mountpoint=/var/log zroot/ROOT/default/var/log zfs create -o mountpoint=/usr/home zroot/home zpool set bootfs=zroot/ROOT/default zroot exit (In this example, I set up ZFS with a beadm-compatible layout which allows me to use Boot Environments.) In the post-install chroot shell, fix some configs like so: echo 'zfsload="YES"' >> /boot/loader.conf echo 'console="comconsole, efi"' >> /boot/loader.conf echo 'vfs.zfs.arcmax="512M"' >> /boot/loader.conf sysrc zfsenable=YES exit (Yeah, for some reason, the loader does not load zfs.ko’s dependency opensolaris.ko automatically here. idk what even. It does on my desktop and laptop.) Now you can reboot into the installed system!! Here’s how you can set up IPv6 (and root’s ssh key) auto configuration on boot: Pkg bootstrap pkg install curl curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/scaleway/image-tools/master/bases/overlay-common/usr/local/bin/scw-metadata > /usr/local/bin/scw-metadata chmod +x /usr/local/bin/scw-metadata echo '#!/bin/sh' > /etc/rc.local echo 'PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH' >> /etc/rc.local echo 'eval $(scw-metadata)' >> /etc/rc.local echo 'echo $SSHPUBLICKEYS0KEY > /root/.ssh/authorizedkeys' >> /etc/rc.local echo 'chmod 0400 /root/.ssh/authorizedkeys' >> /etc/rc.local echo 'ifconfig vtnet0 inet6 $IPV6ADDRESS/$IPV6NETMASK' >> /etc/rc.local echo 'route -6 add default $IPV6GATEWAY' >> /etc/rc.local mkdir /run mkdir /root/.ssh sh /etc/rc.local And to fix incoming TCP connections, configure the DHCP client to change the broadcast address: echo 'interface "vtnet0" { supersede broadcast-address 255.255.255.255; }' >> /etc/dhclient.conf killall dhclient dhclient vtnet0 Other random notes: keep in mind that -CURRENT snapshots come with a debugging kernel by default, which limits syscall performance by a lot, you might want to build your own 2 with config GENERIC-NODEBUG also disable heavy malloc debugging features by running ln -s ‘abort:false, junk:false’ /etc/malloc.conf (yes that’s storing config in a symlink) you can reuse the installer’s partition for swap * Digital Ocean ** http://do.co/bsdnow ###Easy encrypted backups on OpenBSD with base tools Today’s topic is “Encrypted backups” using only OpenBSD base tools. I am planning to write a bigger article later about backups but it’s a wide topic with a lot of software to cover and a lot of explanations about the differents uses cases, needs, issues an solutions. Here I will stick on explaining how to make reliable backups for an OpenBSD system (my laptop). What we need is the dump command (see man 8 dump for its man page). It’s an utility to make a backup for a filesystem, it can only make a backup of one filesystem at a time. On my laptop I only backup /home partition so this solution is suitable for me while still being easy. Dump can do incremental backups, it means that it will only save what changed since the last backup of lower level. If you do not understand this, please refer to the dump man page. What is very interesting with dump is that it honors nodump flag which is an extended attribute of a FFS filesystem. One can use the command chflags nodump /home/solene/Downloads to tells dump not do save that folder (under some circumstances). By default, dump will not save thoses files, EXCEPT for a level 0 backup. Important features of this backup solution: save files with attributes, permissions and flags can recreate a partition from a dump, restore files interactively, from a list or from its inode number (useful when you have files in lost+found) one dump = one file My process is to make a huge dump of level 0 and keep it on a remote server, then, once a week I make a level 1 backup which will contain everything changed since the last dump of level 0, and everyday I do a level 2 backup of my files. The level 2 will contain latest files and the files changing a lot, which are often the most interesting. The level 1 backup is important because it will offload a lot of changes for the level 2. Let me explain: let says my full backup is 60 GB, full of pictures, sources files, GUI applications data files etc… A level 1 backup will contain every new picture, new projects, new GUI files etc… since the full backup, which will produce bigger and bigger dump over time, usually it is only 100 MB to 1GB. As I don’t add new pictures everyday or use new software everyday, the level 2 will take care of most littles changes to my data, like source code edited, little works on files etc… The level 2 backup is really small, I try to keep it under 50 MB so I can easily send it on my remote server everyday. One could you more dump level, up to level 9, but keep in mind that those are incremental. In my case, if I need to restore all my partition, I will need to use level 0, 1 and 2 to get up to latest backup state. If you want to restore a file deleted a few days ago, you need to remember in which level its latest version is. History note: dump was designed to be used with magnetic tapes. See the article for the remainder of the article ##News Roundup Status of DFly server storage upgrades (Matt Dillon) Last month we did some storage upgrades, particularly of internet-facing machines for package and OS distribution. Yesterday we did a number of additional upgrades, described below. All using funds generously donated by everyone! The main repository server received a 2TB SSD to replace the HDDs it was using before. This will improve access to a number of things maintained by this server, including the mail archives, and gives the main repo server more breathing room for repository expansion. Space was at a premium before. Now there’s plenty. Monster, the quad socket opteron which we currently use as the database builder and repository that we export to our public grok service (grok.dragonflybsd.org) received a 512G SSD to add swap space for swapcache, to help cache the grok meta-data. It now has 600GB of swapcache configured. Over the next few weeks we will also be changing the grok updates to ping-pong between the two 4TB data drives it received in the last upgrade so we can do concurrent updates and web accesses without them tripping over each other performance-wise. The main developer box, Leaf, received a 2TB SSD and we are currently in the midst of migrating all the developer accounts in /home and /build from its old HDDs to its new SSD. This machine serves developer repos, developer web stuff, our home page and wiki, etc, so those will become snappier as well. Hard drives are becoming real dinosaurs. We still have a few left from the old days but in terms of active use the only HDDs we feel we really need to keep now are the ones we use for backups and grok data, owing to the amount of storage needed for those functions. Five years ago when we received the blade server that now sits in the colo, we had a small 256G SSD for root on every blade, and everything else used HDDs. To make things operate smoothly, most of that 256G root SSD was assigned to swapcache (200G of it, in fact, in most cases). Even just 2 years ago replacing all those HDDs with SSDs, even just the ones being used to actively serve data and support developers, would have been cost prohibitive. But today it isn’t and the only HDDs we really need anywhere are for backups or certain very large bits of bulk data (aka the grok source repository and index). The way things are going, even the backup drives will probably become SSDs over the next two years. ###iX ad spot OSCON 2018 Recap ###zpool checkpoints In March, to FreeBSD landed a very interesting feature called ‘zpool checkpoints’. Before we jump straight into the topic, let’s take a step back and look at another ZFS feature called ‘snapshot’. Snapshot allows us to create an image of our single file systems. This gives us the option to modify data on the dataset without the fear of losing some data. A very good example of how to use ZFS snapshot is during an upgrade of database schema. Let us consider a situation where we have a few scripts which change our schema. Sometimes we are unable to upgrade in one transaction (for example, when we attempt to alter a table and then update it in single transaction). If our database is on dataset, we can just snapshot it, and if something goes wrong, simply rollback the file system to its previous state. The problem with snapshot is that it works only on a single dataset. If we added some dataset, we wouldn’t then be able to create the snapshot which would rollback that operation. The same with changing the attributes of a dataset. If we change the compression on the dataset, we cannot rollback it. We would need to change that manually. Another interesting problem involves upgrading the whole operating system when we upgrade system with a new ZFS version. What if we start upgrading our dataset and our kernel begins to crash? (If you use FreeBSD, I doubt you will ever have had that experience but still…). If we rollback to the old kernel, there is a chance the dataset will stop working because the new kernel doesn’t know how to use the new features. Zpool checkpoints is the solution to all those problems. Instead of taking a single snapshot of the dataset, we can now take a snapshot of the whole pool. That means we will not only rollback the data but also all the metadata. If we rewind to the checkpoint, all our ZFS properties will be rolled back; the upgrade will be rolledback, and even the creation/deletion of the dataset, and the snapshot, will be rolledback. Zpool Checkpoint has introduced a few simple functions: For a creating checkpoint: zpool checkpoint Rollbacks state to checkpoint and remove the checkpoint: zpool import -- rewind-to-checkpoint Mount the pool read only - this does not rollback the data: zpool import --read-only=on --rewind-to-checkpoint Remove the checkpoint zpool checkpoint --discard or zpool checkpoint -d With this powerful feature we need to remember some safety rules: Scrub will work only on data that isn’t in checkpool. You can’t remove vdev if you have a checkpoint. You can’t split mirror. Reguid will not work either. Create a checkpoint when one of the disks is removed… For me, this feature is incredibly useful, especially when upgrading an operating system, or when I need to experiment with additional data sets. If you speak Polish, I have some additional information for you. During the first Polish BSD user group meeting, I had the opportunity to give a short talk about this feature. Here you find the video of that talk, and here is the slideshow. I would like to offer my thanks to Serapheim Dimitropoulos for developing this feature, and for being so kind in sharing with me so many of its intricacies. If you are interested in knowing more about the technical details of this feature, you should check out Serapheim’s blog, and his video about checkpoints. ###g2k18 Reports g2k18 hackathon report: Ingo Schwarze on sed(1) bugfixing with Martijn van Duren, and about other small userland stuff g2k18 hackathon report: Kenneth Westerback on dhcpd(8) fixes, disklabel(8) refactoring and more g2k18 Hackathon Report: Marc Espie on ports and packages progress g2k18 hackathon report: Antoine Jacoutot on porting g2k18 hackathon report: Matthieu Herrb on font caches and xenodm g2k18 hackathon report: Florian Obser on rtadvd(8) -> rad(8) progress (actually, rewrite) g2k18 Hackathon Report: Klemens Nanni on improvements to route(8), pfctl(8), and mount(2) g2k18 hackathon report: Carlos Cardenas on vmm/vmd progress, LACP g2k18 hackathon report: Claudio Jeker on OpenBGPD developments Picture of the last day of the g2k18 hackathon in Ljubljana, Slovenia ##Beastie Bits Something blogged (on pkgsrcCon 2018) GSoC 2018 Reports: Configuration files versioning in pkgsrc, Part 1 There should be a global ‘awareness’ week for developers Polish BSD User Group – Upcoming Meeting: Aug 9th 2018 London BSD User Group – Upcoming Meeting: Aug 14th 2018 Phillip Smith’s collection of reasons why ZFS is better so that he does not have to repeat himself all the time EuroBSDCon 2018: Sept 20-23rd in Romania – Register NOW! This week we feature commentator Josh Centers, Managing Editor for TidBITS, and author of "Take Control of Apple TV" and other titles, who covers Apple's surprising release of a major update for the MacBook Pro. The refresh features 6-core processors, solid state drives as large as 4TB and up to 32GB RAM, twice as much as Apple has previously offered. Is this the professional  notebook that many users have craved after expressing disappointment with the models offered over the past two years? Josh will also provide speculation about a possible future successor to the Mac, using an ARM-based CPU instead of Intel. Will this be a sort of convergence machine offering features derived from the iPad and Mac, or something altogether new? There will also be a discussion about health and fitness privacy, where Gene wonders if anyone would care if it got out that he's just shy of six feet one inch tall and weighs 178.5 pounds? In a special encore presentation, you’ll also hear from tech columnist and former industry analyst Joe Wilcox, who writes for BetaNews. During this episode, Joe will explain why he regards Apple’s Siri voice assistant as worse than Microsoft’s Skype, despite all the connection glitches with the latter. Will hiring former Google executives help Apple make Siri more responsive and accurate, without sacrificing your security? You’ll also hear about Google I/O and Android P, and about all those fake news reports that the iPhone X was unsuccessful. For two quarters straight, however, Apple reported that the iPhone X was not only its best selling smartphone for each week it was on sale, but the hottest selling smartphone on the planet. Gene shares his 20 years experience with the iMac, which began with the original Bondi Blue model that he beta tested for Apple as part of the former Customer Quality Feedback (CQF) program. You’ll also hear about the Apple Watch and whether it makes sense for Apple to switch Macs from Intel to ARM CPUs.continued to spread false rumors about iPhone sales over the years.

To do this, the smart hairbrush relies on motion sensors for monitoring your brushing patterns, conductivity sensors for spotting whether your hair is wet or dry, and a microphone for identifying “manageability, frizziness, dryness, split ends and breakage.” The brush also vibrates if you use it too vigorously. All this data gets sent to your iPhone, where an app gives you a hair quality score, tells you which parts of your brushing need work, and offers hairstyling products to buy.   OWC’s gigantic dock adds more ports to the new MacBook Pro http://www.cultofmac.com/460947/owcs-gigantic-dock-adds-ports-new-macbook-pro/ OWC teased a new accessory called the DEC dock for MacBook Pro at CES it's a slab that sticks to the bottom of the laptop to add up to 4TB of additional flash or SSD storage, an SD card slot, full-sized USB 3.0 ports and an Ethernet jack for wired internet. The downside is that it makes your new laptop as chunky as the 2012 model. From a depth of around 0.6 inches, you'll now have a machine that's almost an inch thick. OWC chief Larry O'Connor said they've been developing the concept for over three years and feel like the time is right to release it.
