In the final installment of our exploration of Subsidence and Evictions, we delve into economic and political strategies to address the realities facing the land and people of New Orleans. Do we lift houses to mitigate flood damage? What could replace the current landlord/tenant system for rental housing? From the systemic to the practical, my guests challenge us to expand our sense of what is and is not possible. Helping us bring this series home are Austin Feldbaum, the Hazard Mitigation Coordinator for the City of New Orleans; Kate Scott, a landlord and housing justice advocate; and Aron Chang, an urban planner and climate educator. Continuing our study of the influence of Greco-Roman civilization on our language and science, Doug explores the origins of our planets' names. He will discuss the ancient Mesopotamian practices of naming stars and planets after deities, how the Greeks and Romans carried on those traditions, and even later, in the Renaissance and Enlightenment these practices continued. Doug will then explain where the gods of the Greek and Roman pantheons came from, and how much in common these planets have with their eponymous gods. And so, today you will learn the stories of legendary gods: Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Neptune, Pluto, and Mercury along with Saturn, the Titan, and primordial lovers, Gaia and Uranus. The sources quoted and referenced in this episode come from Robin Waterfield's ‘The Greek Myths: Stories of the Greek Gods and Heroes Vividly Retold,' ‘Intergalactic Travel Bureau Vacation Guide to the Solar System' by Koski and Grcevich, and ‘The Moon and Planets in Ancient Mesopotamia' by Mathieu Ossendrijver. Land Acknowledgement by Monique Verdin, Houma Nation, 2021 Juneteenth "There would be no land to acknowledge upon which you now rest if it were not for the Mississippi River. Indigenous Peoples have respected this ever-shifting fluid state at the end of one of the world's largest river systems, inhabiting the high grounds, along the bayous of Bvlbancha, for centuries, as long as there has been land in these territories. Bvlbancha, “place of many tonges” as the Chahta called it, a place of many languages, know better as the global port city rebranded as New Orleans. Ancestral and current Indigenous stewards of these lands and waters, are Chahta, Chitimatcha, Houma, Biloxi, Washa, Chawasha, Bayougoula, Tchoupitoulas, Tunica, Atakapa-Ishak, Caddo, Natchez, Acolapissa, Taensa, and other nations; And all those nations that were erased or assimilated before colonial records had a change to document their existence. The Atakapa-Ishak called these high grounds, where a crossroads of waterways provide access to sites of sacred trade and ceremony ‘the big village,' Nun Ush. A territory of biological and cultural diversity, where water travels through, looking to be purified as it makes its water cycle journey back to the sea or skies. This place is also where many People from Senegambia, the Blight of Benin, Bight of Biafra, and West-Central Africa and other African Nations were brought against their will, enslaved upon these lands. A place were Immigrants and Indigenous peoples from around the world have found and continue to find themselves, due to desires for a better life or nonnegotiable destinies, in this complicated and infinitely beautiful powerpoint on the planet known in the Lower Mississippi River Delta."

We feel it on our skin and under our feet. I wanted to know about the science of the ground sinking beneath us. And maybe by looking at subsidence of Louisiana soil while simultaneously learning more about the housing policies rooted upon this earth…maybe I could think about all of this in a new way. Barre, VT was once called the “Granite Center of the World." Quarries wide and deep gave rise to an industry that promised to bear the task of immortality. Granite of exquisite quality augured not only exceptional monuments and memorials but exceptional lives for generations to come -- free from the privations of the old country -- or so it was thought. There are hundreds of years worth of granite left in Barre's quarries, but now they only employ a few people. Today, some refer to the town as “Scary Barre” -- its history as a center of industry and radical labor politics overshadowed by its sinking economy and struggles with poverty. Using performances of oral histories, we will witness how economic crises change a town, how those changes are still unfolding, and how they have affected us all. After this episode, you'll be able to explain how quantum mechanics affects everything from the way your jeans are cut to the headphones you use. Cindy Zhi/The Conversation NY-BD-CC, CC BY-SAToday on Trust Me, I’m An Expert, we’re bringing you the explainer episode - where we ask researchers to unpack some truly tricky topics. The University of Queensland’s James Sherlock explains what psychology can reveal about why people like pimple popping and ingrown hair removal videos. They’re more popular online than you may realise, as a quick YouTube search for words like “pimple” or “blackhead” will attest - but be careful, they’re not for the faint of heart. And by the time you’ve finished this episode, you’ll be able to explain quantum mechanics in a nutshell - how it affects everything from the way your jeans are cut to the headphones you’re using to hear this podcast. Andrew White, a professor in physics at the University of Queensland, gives us a great little primer on how far quantum mechanics has come, why the research hit a wall, and what exciting breakthroughs might be just around the corner. But first, we’ll hear from Raffaello Pantucci, a King’s College London expert on lone actor terrorism. He talks about what the research says about this troubling phenomenon, and why police never use the phrase “lone wolf” to describe it. Trust Me, I’m An Expert, out at the start of every month, is a podcast from The Conversation, where we bring you stories, ideas and insights from the world of academic research. One of the most awe-inspiring sights in and around St. Petersburg, Russia, is the Catherine Palace, a rococo summer residence for the imperial family of yore. Up until World War II, The Catherine Palace housed something so incredible, so coveted, and so gorgeous that for hundreds of years, travelers fro all over the world flocked to admire it, referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." And then, in the early 1940s with the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, this priceless creation was stolen. And to this day, it has still never been found. Every First Friday in Philly has so much art happening it's impossible to get around to all of the galleries. This is a very good thing for Philly artists and artists from around the world showing in Philly at local galleries - if you don't believe me just check out a site like Philly Stewards (www.phillystewards.art/) and browse their calendar. So much is going on in the Philly art scene right now that many galleries have moved their openings to the Saturday after First Friday. In this announcement I mention two, neighbors in the Fishtown/Kensington neighborhoods, who have openings on the same night around the same time: Kitchen Table Gallery ;) & Little Berlin. After mentioning the project several times on the show (and on the blog as well!), this week, I finally had the pleasure of talking to Markus Koller, the person behind the wonderful Starfrosch. Starfrosch is a Switzerland-based project that runs simultaneously as a podcast, a blog, an automated radio playlist and, last but definitely not least, as a Hot100 chart for Creative Commons music. Markus is a pioneer of Creative Commons music, having been an active member of the community for more than a decade now. So, it didn’t come as a surprise to find out that he knows quite a lot about the licences and some of the issues major CC music sharing platforms have. On top of that, we also talked about how he developed the website and the project over the years, and some of his own favourite music genres and platforms. Starfrosch is currently looking for bloggers who are into the most mainstream side of Creative Commons music to help them keep their blog alive and fresh.
