We've reached the final episode of Season 4! Can you believe it?! But in THIS final, we're all winners. Susie & Esther discuss comedy - with a natter about what makes them laugh. And a few fart jokes. They may appear to be intelligent, mature and sophisticated (ahem) but they love a dollop of good old toilet humour. And rude words. This ep's special guest is multi award winning British comedian and writer, DOM JOLY. Dom's route to comedy legend is a surprising and fascinating one. Born in Beirut, Dom went to school alongside Osama Bin Laden. Yes you heard that correctly. He speaks several languages, regularly played bridge with Dido, before she was famous, and sold his home to Salman Rushdie. He was a Diplomat in Prague and a political producer for ITN in Westminster, interviewing politicians until an unfortunate incident with David Mellor and a football led to him getting sacked. After this, his career took a different direction and in the early 2000's his hidden camera show TRIGGER HAPPY TV landed on Channel 4 and become an instant cult hit gaining him a dedicated fan base. Now an acclaimed travel writer, Dom has written and toured several books including THE DARK TOURIST; CONSPIRACY TOURIST; and SUCH MISERABLE WEATHER and has travelled to over 100 countries. Dom Joly - the Conspiracy Tour is visiting multiple venues in the UK in Sept/Oct/Nov this year. S & E talk to Dom about the serendipitous moments in his life and his willingness to push boundaries; what his biggest piece of advice is; and getting arrested. He's a fascinating and very funny man, and the resulting conversation is a treat to listen to. Along with a bumper crop of sketches, extra chats and plenty of surprises this final episode of the season will hopefully raise a lorra lorra laughs. The gals will be back in the autumn for SEASON FIVE!!! We hope you enjoy this episode. Please share it with someone you like who'd enjoy it too! Leonora welcomes Miriam Cooper from Mimi's Bowl to the show to discuss children's nutrition and her tips on cooking for the whole family. "Miriam is my absolute go-to for family cooking and children's nutrition. I don't think there is one thing on her whole website that the children haven't loved and I think it is an absolute must for any parent. I'm just waiting for a book now! We talked about everything from apple cider vinegar and no-cook fruit purees to fussy eaters and delicious and nutritious snacks." Leo Bamford. Perfect for roasts and tray bakes it makes one tray cooking easy this Summer Daylesford Double Rectangular Bento Box This is the second summer I am using these adorable bento boxes for kids' snacks and lunches on the go. They are brilliant for picnics too, in my opinion, food always tastes better outdoors. So let's take advantage of the Summer months and spend more time eating al fresco. I always find it's a great way to bring some fun and adventure to meal times with my own kids. Blafre Stainless Steel Drinking Flasks I am not usually without them for both the kids and me. These are our go-to water bottles at home, they have lasted brilliantly and the stainless steel bottle keeps drinks cool. You buy the bottle end separately and there are plenty of colours to choose from. Sophie Conran's Cream Floret Tableware My current obsession is Sophie Conran's floret collection. The beautiful bowls come in different sizes and I have filled my kitchen with them: for lemons, tomatoes and onions. I love to have ingredients to hand to inspire my cooking. David Mellor's Porcelain Children's Tableware A recent buy, but I love this classic design from 1975 it's timeless. I have a drawer of kids' plates and bowls and these sets are really useful and well-loved. Wean Green Storage Cubes The best storage containers I have tried, I especially like these mini cubes. They were fantastic when I was weaning my children, but I have used them ever since. For leftovers and odds and ends that you want to turn into snacks, they are brilliant. The containers themselves are glass, I bought mine on Amazon and they have just lasted brilliantly. Papier's Recipe Books It is always a good time to start a family cookbook, writing down all of your favourite recipes. I love the designs from Papier, their hardback notebooks are beautifully made. I am in process of cooking through all my mother's recipes, she sadly passed away in 2021. Cooking the recipes of my childhood helps me feel closer to her and process my grief. I hope to write them down for my children and pass on the story of our family through food. Kitchen Aid Muffin Tray Found my muffin tray in stock and it is a simple one but I prefer the aluminised steel finish to others. This is brilliant for baking, but you can also turn it into a sharing tray for children and it will double up as the perfect snack tray! If You Care Unbleached Parchment Baking Roll I cook with these baking sheets almost every day and they save a mountain of washing up. For me, they are one of my kitchen must-haves. Rukmini Iyer's brilliant Roasting Tin Series Such a clever concept and beautifully written, with delicious combinations. Rukmini will give you plenty of inspiration for one tray family cooking of which I am a huge fan. What is My Baba? As a content creator, he loves to drag the best ideas out of people and as a ‘Collaboration Advocate' he argues we must kick down silos and pop learning bubbles to work better together. You could describe Trevor as a team player who's fascinated with patterns in football (and elsewhere) particularly those his team, Watford FC, make at Vicarage Road. He's ludicrously proud of coaching a football team of 9 to 10 year olds and helping them develop as people and players. Trevor factoids: back in the day he was area fencing champion and played the French Horn to Grade 8, he's currently a presenter on St Albans-based Radio Veralum and is a big fan of Catalan band, Sense Sal. Born in 1961 and completing her degree in Audio Visual studies at The Surrey Institute, Farnham in 1986, Anna Fox began her career as a documentary photographer. Influenced by the British documentary tradition and the USA's ‘New Colourists', she chronicled new town life in Basingstoke (locally known as ‘Doughnut City') and went on to publish the monograph Work Stations (1988), a study of London Office life in Thatcher's Britain. These works were exhibited extensively as far a field as Brazil and Estonia and in Through the Looking Glass, at the Barbican Art Gallery in 1989 curated by David Mellor and Ian Jeffrey, establishing Anna as a significant figure within the field of new colour documentary. In later projects, made in the 1990's, In Pursuit (1990), The Village (1991-1992 Cross Channel Photographic Mission commission), Friendly Fire (1992) and Zwarte Piet (the Netherlands 1994-1999) Anna created a new direction inventing innovative approaches and raising questions regarding the problems of documentary practice. These projects were exhibited in a number of solo exhibitions including The Photographers Gallery, London and The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago.By early 2000 Anna produced two autobiographical works: Cockroach Diary and My Mothers Cupboards and my Father's Words which completely turned on its head the notion of the documentary photographer as outsider. These new works investigated the personal and difficult world of domestic households and relationships bringing together a mix of image and text in two miniature book works. Later in 2003 the series Made in Europe questioned further the power relation between subject and photographer by handing over power to the subject in whork that portrayed a vision of contemporary Europe through the eyes and voices of teenagers. This week we share the story of David Mellor - Author of the book - "One Base at a Time" - David Mellor was just a baseball-crazed kid, a star high school pitcher preparing to go to college and dreaming of one day taking the mound in Fenway Park for his beloved Boston Red Sox. His dream was derailed as he crossed the parking lot of a McDonald’s. He heard the racing engine, but couldn’t defend himself against the car coming straight at him. It sent him flying through the air and into a wall, where it hit him again and pinned him, severely damaging his knee and destroying his hope of ever being a Major League pitcher. David Mellor considers himself “one of the luckiest people in the world,” and his story is AMAZING. He was hit by two different cars in two different cities – and both smashed his knee. He has had dozens of surgeries and suffered from severe PTSD for 29 years without even realizing it. But through it all, his love for his family and Red Sox baseball kept him going, and he became the leading innovator of creative turf patterns. David’s new book, “One Base at a Time,” tells his unbelievable story of overcoming PTSD, from a life of nightmares to a life of wonder. But most importantly, he gives hope for everyone feeling broken that life can still be fulfilling. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
