This week, the boys pull up their dacks, lace up their blunnies, pull over their cardies, eat a bikkie, grab a tinny, and lob in for the Ridgy Didge himself, Baz Luhrmann's first feature film, “Strictly Ballroom”. This isn't any ear bashing- we loved it! It made us three happy little Vegemites. After Jeff gives a quick mini-review of “Mission: Impossible— The Final Reckoning”, our native Aussie and gutless wonder, Dave, knackered from a good hissy at his lappy, guides us through this absolute hooley dooley. Don't be a drongo- grab a coldie and listen- you'll be doing the bogo pogo in a jiff!  Our phone number is 646-484-9298. This is the second-to-last of our summer reruns; new episodes back Sept. 18 on the Patreon feed and Sept. 25 on the main feed! For this one, we're taking a break from looking at the ways that sitcoms advanced American discourse about LGBTQ people and instead gawking at campy 80s fluff — because that is also a thing that is important to gay people. “Jennifer: The Movie” (October 29, 1983) We're celebrating both Halloween and week two of our celebration of Ann Jillian with an episode about how the 1983 NBC series Jennifer Slept Here is both so very weird and also a little gay boy's fantasy — because it pairs an awkward boy with glamorous ghost, and that's secretly what every little gay boy wishes he had to guide him through his awkward years. This is peak 80s, but also it has one of the best sitcom themes ever, regardless of decade. Watch Drew's video of the 1982 Night of a Thousand Stars fashion show, which features Ann Jillian looking like her most Debbie Harry ever. Gawk in awe at: The opening to Mr. Smith The opening to Double Trouble The opening to Mr. Merlin The opening to Down to Earth The opening to Ann Jillian Ann as the Red Queen in the live action Alice in Wonderland + the very scary Jabberwocky scenes

Imagine you've been diagnosed with a terminal illness and are consumed by feelings of hopelessness, fear, and depression. What if there was a treatment that could help? Research has shown that psilocybin-assisted therapy can significantly reduce the existential distress associated with dying. Psilocybin is currently in clinical trials for this use, but many terminally ill patients, like Erinn Baldeschwiler, either don't have access or time to wait. When Erinn and her palliative care doctor, Dr. Sunil Aggarwal, tried to access psilocybin outside of a clinical trial through Right to Try Laws, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) denied their request. Together, Erinn, Dr. Aggarwal, and their lawyer Kathryn Tucker J.D. are suing the DEA for denying them access to psilocybin in a groundbreaking case that could potentially help many terminally ill people in the future. In this episode, I talk with Erinn Baldeschwiler, Dr. Sunil Aggarwal, and Kathryn Tucker about this pivotal lawsuit, how psilocybin-assisted therapy might really help people who are dying, and I ask Erinn questions about her terminal illness and what it means to her to be a part of this case. In this episode of Check It/Round Table Onna discusses 1,000 Stars episode 1, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I6NrSZDdsM of the highly anticipated Thai BL drama series. Onna gives the synopsis of this episode, how Tian ends up losing a gamble and then racing his opponent, when he hits a woman and kills her and goes to critical condition himself. Tian then finds himself in a darkness with a woman holding a lantern who, after questioning, touches where his heart is and asks him to "take care of it for her" before he bumps into this guy who appears to be a soldier. Tian then wakes up to find out he has finally received a heart transplant after a lifetime of suffering from an inflamed heart and starts his journey to recovery with questions regarding who the donor was. This leads him on a journey to a remote village in Thailand, where he finds "Chief" the man he bumped into in his strange vision. Onna digresses into why this series' pilot is one of two that is absolutely perfect and how the ideas it brings up: of a heart having to go back to the one it belonged to from the beginning and how Tian being the one who killed the woman who ended up giving him her heart are fascinating/sacrificial and somewhat redemptive ideas. Onna considers the seat of emotions and the soul--we get deep, peeps. :() Onna also gives a shout out to the byulsarnag YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqTPDL4QnLFNvScW7ke-58g for its amazing content and linear reviews. This is peak 80s, but also it has one of the best sitcom themes ever, regardless of decade. While I do love books that deal with important and often heavy issues, several people in my family are battling major health issues that are pretty heavy. So I’m looking for a book to escape from all that when I need a little pick me up. I recently read The Invisible Library and loved it! Where’d you go Bernadette, Ready Player One, The Night Circus, and Harry Potter are some of my favorites. I want something I can spend some time with so please no short stories or graphic novels. I can’t wait to hear what you recommend! --Jessica   2. For a trip in April! Hi, Get Booked! The orchestra I perform with is going on tour to Peru, Argentina and Uruguay next month and I’d love to read a novel or two set in the countries where we’ll be. I’m also writing my dissertation, so lighter, fun reads would be appreciated. Nothing supernatural please. Thank you! --Sarah   3. Hi, I’m looking for a good trilogy to read. I’m participating in a Litsy Reading Challenge and one of the categories is read a trilogy. It can be YA or not, preferably not. I really liked The Grisha trilogy. I tried the first in Blood of Eden series (The Immortal Rules) and didn’t care for it. I’ve read all the popular YA ones like hunger games, divergent, etc. My favorite genres are fantasy, mystery and Historical fiction. Thanks in advance! --Mikala   4. I'm participating in the read harder challenge and I'm a bit anxious just thinking about the true crime book. Could you recommend a nonviolent true crime book for anxious wimps like me? Maybe a heist or something? --Emily   5. Hi Ladies! My best friend's birthday in in three weeks and I'm stumped. I've exhausted my knowledge of big-gothic-isolated-house-psychological thrillers (her FAVORITE in all caps). I've given her Rebecca, The Haunting of Hill House, The Silent Companions, The Woman in Black, The Essex Serpent and most of Wilkie Collins. Creepy and / or serious is great, but odd or quirky is okay - her favorite movie is Clue, so an Edward Gorey vibe is great too. Thanks so much! --Madeleine   6. TIME SENSITIVE for EARLY APRIL. I’ll be going to the French Quarter in New Orleans for an academic conference this April (Fun fact: the academic conference coincides with both WWE’s Wrestlemania and the city’s French Quarter festival, so I can only imagine who my neighbors at the hostel will be!!). Could you recommend any books or authors to check out if I wanna get to know the city ahead of time? Personally, I don’t know where to start because Nola ticks so many of my interests: jazz, mysticism/magic (vampires, voodoo, graveyards tours etc.), black culture & history, French Creole & Cajun culture, great food…all wrapped up in a small city that remains to be beautiful post-Katrina. Thank you for answering everyone’s questions every episode!! --Jess   7. URGENT!!!! Please help! My brother in law is going on a month long rafting trip down the Grand Canyon and I want to get him a book to bring. He's a fan of Cormac McCarthy, Edward Abbey, western/mountain man stories, the classics. I think he would also enjoy interesting non-fiction. By Lisa Burns Deep in the South Australian outback lies a place only accessible via dirt track and almost 200km from the nearest town. Out-of-towners know the small, mostly Aboriginal community of Oodnadatta as little more than a fuel fill and a quick feed. Few venture beyond the bowsers of the iconic Pink Roadhouse. But over at the church ground rises the Cathedral of a Thousand Stars. It’s an open-air church run by Julia Warren, a local Aboriginal woman. Julia founded the Oodnadatta Faith Community in 2007, on the same earth that missionaries from the United Aborigines Mission built the Oodnadatta Children’s Home in 1924. A slab of concrete is all that remains of the Home, but for generations past and present, its impact has been much more lasting. Cathedral of a Thousand Stars follows the stories of two Aboriginal women separated by time but united by place. Their stories are shaped by family, culture, survival and hope, and together they highlight the diversity of spirituality and faith in Australia. A heartfelt thank you to the Aunties for sharing their stories. Then chapter 210 ushers in "A New Spiritual Age" as we follow the white dragonfly-bunny to Uncle Iroh's spirit tea party, see some genuinely creepy crawly things, and endure the return of the Dick Owl. And lastly chapter 211, "Night of a Thousand Stars" proves to be one of our favorites episodes of the entire season as Bolin becomes the real life Nuktuk we always knew he could be. But what's that? This week on The Avatar Returns we explore the gritty Miller and Mazzucchelli masterpiece, Avatar: Year One. Okay, not really. But we are talking about The Legend of Korra two-parter "Beginnings," which like the classic graphic novel mentioned above explores origins, in this case the origin of the Avatar State itself. We are introduced to Wan, the lovable riff-raff street rat with the heart of gold, who would ultimately go on to mess the world up in a pretty big way, and in turn become the first Avatar in order to just hold everything together. In other words, we learn that the Avatar is a bandaid.  Harmonic Convergence is almost upon us, and it's a plot device 10,000 years in the making! Can Studio Mir save us? Or perhaps the Grumpy Carrot spirit is our hero? Is Vaatu the Unalaq of spirits? Tune in to find out. Shrunken Head Lounge Surf Radio Show Running Time: 29 minutes 31 seconds Sandy Nelson Sandy Nelson was a prominent session drummer in the 50's and 60's and managed to put some instrumental hits of his own in the top ten.He was born Sander Nelson in 1938 in Santa Monica, California. He attended high school with Jan Berry, Dean Torrence Phil Spector, and others who went on to careers in rock-and-roll. Sandy became a proficient drummer and joined his firs group, Kip Tyler and the Flips. Another member of the group was future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, who played piano. Ki Tyler and the Flips recorded some songs on the Ebb and Challenge labels. His services as a drummer were in demand. He played drums for Spector on the Teddy Bears' number one hit To Know Him, Is To Love Him in 1958, and the following year he sessioned for Gene Vincent on Crazy Times before striking out o his own. He recorded for the Original Sound label, and his fifth release Teen Beat made it all the way to number four i 1959. It was rather unusual in that it was an instrumental song featuring Sandy's pounding drums. Instrumentals did no generally sell very well, but this one certainly did.Sandy Nelson continued his work as a session drummer on many well known rock-and-roll songs in the early 60's, appearin on such top ten hits as Alley-Oop and A Thousand Stars. He signed a recording contract with Imperial and in 1961 release his second [and last] top ten hit, Let There Be Drums. Once again he had scored with an instrumental that featured hi driving drum beat. He had other minor hits in 1962, such as Drums Are MyBeat. In 1963 Sandy was involved in a vehicular accident and lost part of his leg. He recovered and returned to performing the following year, and eventually released Teen Beat '65 before fading away.
