What with BVB hiring a familiar face and Werder Bremen getting the short end of the refereeing stick, Nik and Terry had plenty to talk about. Not that they leave it there, either - Bayern's coming date with Leverkusen comes under their lens, as does the recent play of Davie Selke(!)
Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/episode-80-mary-wearEpisode #80 features copywriter extraordinaire Mary Wear.Mary wrote possibly the most important endline in the history of advertising: ‘Make Poverty History' for Comic Relief in 2004 … a line and movement that involved Richard Curtis, World Leaders and saving lives. The line was everywhere - posters, bus sides, advans, on underpants, on Bono's arm, on the side of St Paul's Cathedral and the coup de grâce, on a lectern in front of Nelson Mandela, who was chanting the words ‘Make Poverty History' to thousands gathered in Trafalgar Square. That is more than most people's entire careers and would easily have been enough to fill the episode. The way Mary tells the story of how the line came about is wonderfully humble, involving a planner and a rather talented chap called Peter Souter. But Mary is no one-trick pony. Her locker is full of great work.Starving a parking meter for TfL was a lesson in never giving up, even when the model maker had ruined the idea. What could have been a catastrophe turned into a seminal award-winning piece of work. Then there was seemingly endless more award winning work for The Economist, the Famous Grouse (a double, a small one, a quick one, a large one - they all went down well) plus an Anti-Smoking like never before. Her partnership with Damon Collins at GGT, Saatchi's and AMV was brilliant and prolific. We even had time for some Russian Vodka and flapjacks ;-)Thank you Mary for coming on and sharing some of the industry's greatest OOH work. It was a real privilege.

"Beziehungsstatus: Es ist interessant!" Nicht jede Beziehung muss von komplizierter Art sein. Von tiefer Neugier spricht das Gedicht "Famous Grouse" von Heinrich Detering: Da begegnen sich Moorhuhn und Mensch auf Augenhöhe. Verstehen, ohne sich zu verstehen. Rilkes "Begegnung Version 1" benennt die magischen Momente, in denen zwei Wesen einander nahe sind, im "schweigen, das wir lang erwarteten". Wunderbar. Dazu gibt es Psalmworte. Seelenfeinkost.

Rare, endangered animals are under attack from rich, powerful people who operate above the law. But this isn't a story about illegal poaching in Africa, nor animals being hunted for Chinese medicines. This is happening in the UK. Arthur Snell talks to environmental activist Mark Avery, former RSPB conservation director, co-founder of Wild Justice, and author of Inglorious, about grouse shooting, who really owns our moorland, and ending the persecution of raptors. “These grouse moors are wildlife crime hotspots.” “Grouse shooting is seen as a posh, sexy sport. But it's only a sport if the grouses have guns too.” “So many birds are being poisoned, shot, or disappeared on grouse moors that it's impossible to ignore anymore.” “If you ever see someone killing a bird of prey, know that that is illegal.” https://www.patreon.com/bunkercast Presented by Arthur Snell. Though its ingredients core are simple – barley, yeast and water – the final product that comes about after years of aging is incredibly unique. The distinctive flavor of Scotch whisky is influenced by the way it is malted, how the malt is dried, the distillation process, and lastly the aging process! The type of wood and its prior use in former casks – whether for sherry or bourbon – also influences the final flavor. Whisky is an amazing case study in how plant chemistry and extraction methods influence the chemical character of the final product! In this episode, I dive into the chemistry and flavor of one of my favorite spirits and speak with Gordon Motion, the master whisky maker for Highland Park. About Gordon Motion Gordon Motion, Highland Park Whisky Maker - a postgraduate in malting, brewing and distilling from the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh – has worked in the beverage industry his entire career and in the Scotch whisky industry in particular, since 1998. Before venturing into the world of Scotch whisky, Gordon held a number of positions with some well-known breweries including Mount Murray (Isle of Man); Tom Hoskin’s (Leicester); Belhaven (Dunbar), before becoming assistant maltster with Pauls Malt Glenesk Maltings at Montrose. He then joined Edrington in 1998 and has had experience working on all Edrington brands including The Macallan, The Famous Grouse, Glenrothes and Glenturret. Today, his main role is Master Whisky Maker for Highland Park. As well as the day-to-day job of ensuring the quality of our whisky – from new make spirit through maturation, blending and finally into bottle - Gordon is extremely busy developing and crafting new whiskies for the brand, a very important aspect of the role. Outside of work, Gordon also uses his craftsmanship skills in DIY projects. Not only has he designed and built his own house, he is currently involved in designing and creating a bespoke sample room at the Highland Park distillery on Orkney! A true, skilled master with an eye for detail. About Cassandra Quave Prof. Cassandra Quave is best known for her ground-breaking research on the science of botanicals. Scientists in her research lab work to uncover some of nature’s deepest secrets as they search for new ways to fight life-threatening diseases, including antibiotic resistant infections. Working with a global network of scientists and healers, Cassandra and her team travel the world hunting for new plant ingredients, interviewing healers, and bringing plants back to the lab to study. The first drunk ramble of, what I suspect, will be many.
Episode 11 is the first round of NBA Trivia from Dunk You Very Much! Play along with the boys - listen to each question, if you get the answer right you're set, but if you're wrong down a drink! Bourbon has a unique place in American history, but as with other elements of American history...many of the stories of Bourbon are based more on myth and legend than actual facts, and the truth often gets lost over decades of marketing mythology. Reid Mitenbuler debunks many of the myths and provides historical context in his book "Bourbon Empire: The Past and Future of America's Whiskey." He'll share some of his stories with us in the first of a two-part interview on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, a more recent whiskey tale will cost Templeton Rye thousands of dollars in refunds and legal fees after the Iowa company settled three class-action lawsuits in what Templeton Rye co-founder Keith Kerkhoff called "legalized stealing." Scottish National Party activists want the Edinburgh government to intervene in the Scotch Whisky industry to keep more profits in Scotland, and we'll have details on new whiskies from Jack Daniel's, The Famous Grouse, The Dalmore, Pendleton, and more!
Tasmania's distillers have been making some unusual and incredible whiskies in recent years, but many of them are flying under the radar of whisky lovers. Belgrove Distillery is one of those underrated distilleries, but when WhiskyCast listener Matt Wooler told us we had to check it out, we did. Peter Bignell built the distillery from the ground up on his farm, where he grows his own grain, makes his own whisky, and even fills and labels each bottle by hand. He's also making what may well be one of the few peated rye whiskies in the world, and shares his story with us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Kentucky's stocks of maturing Bourbon have reached the five million barrel mark for the first time since 1977, we'll get the latest on commemorative bottlings from Maker's Mark and The Famous Grouse, and Woodford Reserve mourns the death of a longtime family member...Elijah, the distillery cat.
Celebrity-branded spirits are a big trend these days, and the whisky world is no exception. Last week, we reported on the lawsuit filed by John Wayne's heirs against Duke University seeking to protect the family's trademark rights to produce a "Duke Bourbon" featuring the late actor. It's a little easier when the brand is based on a character instead of the actor, though...and this week, we'll hear from two entrepreneurs who have done just that. Michael Howard of Prairie Creek Beverages in Dallas is behind the J.R. Ewing Bourbon named after the legendary "Dallas" villain, and Ed Caan of Riviera Imports worked with Paramount Pictures on Ron Burgundy Great Odin's Raven Scotch as part of last winter's "Anchorman 2" premiere. He'll tell us what Paramount executives originally wanted to call the whisky, too. We'll also have the latest on the pending sale of Whyte & Mackay, along with word that distillers just down the road from J.R.'s Southfork Ranch have won a zoning battle for their new distillery site. David Beckham, Simon Fuller, and Diageo have launched their Haig Club single grain Scotch in London, and The Famous Grouse releases a special bottling for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Finally, we'll look at ideas for summer whisky cocktails with bartender Jeff Bell of PDT in New York City.
Stories are what give whisky its unique place in the drinks world, and this week, we'll hear from two authors of new books on the stories and history of whisky. Gavin Smith's "Stillhouse Stories & Tunroom Tales" shares the stories of current and retired whisky makers in Scotland, while Fred Minnick looks at the history of women in whisky in his new book "Whiskey Women: The Untold Story of how Women Saved Bourbon, Scotch, & Irish Whiskey". In the news, The Famous Grouse tests flavored versions in Sweden, The Tweeddale Blend arrives in Canada, Kentucky officials approve tax incentives for two distillery projects, and UK regulators are said to be weighing in on Diageo's acquisition of India's United Spirits.
In this episode, we try our first blend, The Famous Grouse, and explain the difference between a single malt and a blend. Famous Grouse is Scotland’s favourite whisky, which may have something to do with the fact that I bought a litre for £13.
You have questions about whisky, and this week, we have some of the answers. It's the annual Question and Answer episode of WhiskyCast, and whisky experts will answer some of the many questions that have come in from WhiskyCast community members. We'll get the definitive answer on whether to store whisky bottles on their side or standing up, among other things. This time around, Supreme Ayatollah for Life Eric Robertson, Founding Father "Johnny D" and special guest Ben Galvez review 7 Blended scotches, in order of what was tasted first: Cutty Sark, Dewars white label, The Famous Grouse, Chivas Regal 12 year old, Johnny Walker Black Label, Chivas Regal 18 year old, and Johnny Walker Gold Label. Two are downright toxic, so you should probably tune in and find out which ones? Originally Published 20March2011

In the news, the finalists have been announced in the Spirit of Speyside Festival Whisky Awards, the Famous Grouse has plans to migrate to India, and Malt Advocate cuts the cost of tickets for WhiskyFest Chicago.
A double feature with two (actually, three) great whiskies to talk about this week! Glenlivet's breaking the age barrier with its first 25-year-old single malt, and we'll taste it with Ian Logan. David Mair of The Balvenie will tell us more about the new Balvenie Signature, along with a special distillery-only bottling he snuck out of Speyside for a trip to New York...the Balvenie Rose. In the news, China gives Scotch Whisky trademark protection status, the Famous Grouse releases a new duty-free expression, and Bruichladdich asks us to compare and contrast.
The Famous Grouse is Scotland's #1 blended Scotch, but the newest version of the Grouse won't be available there. The Black Grouse is a new blend that takes the best of the Grouse and adds in a touch of Islay for a peatier, smokier blend. It's been on the market all year in Sweden, where Edrington's Helen Potter got the inspiration to create the Black Grouse. Helen is the innovation and development manager for The Famous Grouse, and she'll give us the details on the Black Grouse. In the news, new whiskies from Benriach and Old Forester, and they'll fire up the still at George Washington's Distillery this week.
There's no arguing that John Glaser of Compass Box is one of the whisky industry's leading innovators, but John's latest creation has been pulled off the market after a conflict with the Scotch Whisky Association over traditional practices. We'll hear from both sides, and there's a lot of news as well in this episode. Ardbeg's turning out a 40-year-old, the Famous Grouse has a new nest online, there's another addition to the WhiskyCast book club, and if you've ever wondered what working in a distillery would be like, a Wild Scotsman wants to give you the chance to find out.
