It's taken at least three translators, two streaming services, thirteen whiskeys, a Susanna Hoffs slow dance classic, and far too many references to Spirit Halloween, but we've finally gotten to the final episode of The Hexer. Will the series go out with a bang, or a poorly subtitled whimper? (Do you really need to ask?) Still, finishing this amusingly uneven series is something worth celebrating, and since The Hexer turns 21 this year, we've paired it with a bottle of Dewar's Double Double 21-Year-Old Scotch. It's super smooth, which is more than we can say for Geralt, who spends this episode moping about his career, making out with elves and getting his butt kicked by squeaky toys. Plus, since we're nothing if not gluttons for punishment, we do another review shot and end this episode about as coherent as one of Hexer's subtitles. And really, is there any better tribute?
Tasting NotesTo say that Jameson Irish Whiskey is a great blend, is a bit of an understatement. And although in recent years it has transcended the Irish whiskey category and simultaneously spurred billions of dollars in invest in the country and category itself, at the end of the day it's about THE WHISKEY. And guess what...it's fantastic. Portions of single pot still and sherry finishing meld seamlessly with fine light and sweet Irish grain. Soft, fruity, grassy, with a depth, roundness, and "liquid gold" drinkability that's really not matched among the great world blends. Chivas, Dewars, Johnnie Black, Crown Royal, Seagram's VO Gold, these are all great, historic, magnificently drinkable whiskies, but if I'm sitting in a strange hotel bar with limited options and 20 minutes to kill...give me a JAMO all day long!

With interest in alternative asset classes at an all-time high, the focus of family offices and other investors has been to investigate more "liquid assets." We're not talking about cash or oil . . . the spirits world has produced scores of profit stories at the asset class and business level. Bourbon is a niche that has been on fire recently. With a low interest rate environment, private capital's huge appetite for "uncorrelated" asset classes, and a theme that is a haven for entrepreneurs in Kentucky and beyond, this is a good time to investigate the bourbon space. It is more than just Jim Beam, Maker's Mark and Wild Turkey. (FYI- Jack Daniel's is technically a Tennessee Whiskey and not a bourbon). To get our arms around the subject, I spoke with MARK GARBIN and centered the discussion around bourbon. MARK is an investment management executive focusing on fiduciary duties issues in investment vehicles for public and private funds. He is a CFA charter holder and professional risk manager. More importantly, he is an expert on bourbon and whiskey both from a quality and taste perspective and as an asset class. He is the author of many books including his new book “Whiskey Glory” – about the rise of the Dewars famous lineup. We take a deep dive into bourbon as an asset class- actually owning the liquid inputs and deriving yield from them- to investing in a bourbon company. Think of Belgium and drinks, and beer is usually the first thing that comes to mind. However, Belgians are quite fond of whisky as well, and Etienne Bouillon is trying to satisfy their passion with Belgium's first single malt whisky. The Owl Distillery has been making whisky since 2004, and sells almost all of its production within Belgium, including a 5-year-old single cask bottled this year at a whopping 76.1% ABV. In the news, an industry panel sides with critics of the controversial Dewar's "Meet The Baron" video, Diageo runs into another bump for control of India's United Spirits, and Jim Beam is making plans for a single barrel Bourbon that will even be sold by the barrel.
Dewar's was forced to remove an online video promotion from the Internet this week after a social media-fueled protest campaign over the portrayal of women in its "Meet the Baron" video. Canadian whisky blogger Johanne McInnis was one of the leaders of the protest, and joins us to discuss the controversy in this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. McInnis has filed a complaint against Dewar's with the Distilled Spirits Council accusing the ad of violating the group's Code of Responsible Practices, and Frank Coleman of DISCUS will explain just how the code works. Ian Buxton has just released a new book, "The Enduring Legacy of Dewar's", in cooperation with Dewar's owner Bacardi, and he joins us via Skype from Edinburgh to share some of Dewar's history.
