Artists, explorers, and scientists are recording audio of Antarctica sea ice melting, hoping the sounds help people sympathize with the environmental crisis. After months of heavy storms, California's mountains now have some of the largest snowpacks on record. But how fast could the snow melt and produce flooding? After Janet Protasiewicz gets sworn in as a Wisconsin Supreme Court justice, the liberal minority there will become a majority. It could have implications for the 2024 presidential election. The arrest of American journalist Evan Gershkovich in Russia sparked outrage in the U.S. Moscow detained the Wall Street Journal reporter on espionage charges. Gefilte fish is a mixture of ground fish, onion and carrot, bound with egg and matzo meal, and seasoned with optional sugar, salt and white pepper. It's traditionally cooked in a rich fish broth.

Samara  was born in in Baltimore, MD and lived in Jacksonville, Fla. till she was  25. At that point, Samara moved to Northwest North Carolina. At a young age, Samara envisioned her life quite differently, especially in the kitchen. This is where the story begins...."Marilyn didn't talk about her childhood very much because she doesn't have much that's positive to share, continues Samara. "When she was being raised, she was the product of what would be considered an illegitimate relationship. She was treated very much like the black sheep and the role that they found for her in the family was basically as  something of a servant. She was always cooking and cleaning up after everybody. And over the years, she says she started making food for the family when she was seven. Over the years, she developed her kraft and honed her techniques and  developed an actual love of her process."My guest says that her mother was a rebellious teenager in the early 1940's. Marilyn's mother, Samara's grandmother, did not have a true  presence in her daughter's life."To say that she was emotionally unavailable is pretty accurate," reflects Samara about her mom.  "Why are you crying, it's not going to bring them back" is what Marilyn would say to her daughter if she was sad and crying about loosing someone."Samara was drawn to her mom's passion of cooking. At the drop of a hat there'd be anywhere from 10 or more guests for dinner. Unfortunately, Samara would serve as the dish washer and cleaner and not an assistant to the chef. Samara remembers distinctly her mom prepping food for the holidays. "Her Passover Seders, were the meals that stand out to this day. It was because they were never less than an elaborate affair. She'd start cooking days in advance to make the chopped liver and stick it in the fridge and make the Gefilte fish  from scratch, you know,  it was an ordeal, every year." Today, the relationship is strained between mother and daughter.  Marilyn was a stay at home mom and  critically ill throughout Marilyn's life.  Mom has been bedridden for five years. Both parents are medical professionals but as Marilyn says, "they both hold their cards very close."Samara loves her mom. She says "my mom would give you the shirt off her back, she's was always very generous and a bit of a philanthropist." Despite their differences, Samara truly cares about her mom.Samara's mother is very generous and giving and really a philanthropist with hopes and desires to help others succeed. Despite their differences and challenges in their relationship, Samara truly loves her mother.Samara's current business -"Brew Naturals."  It's all about Elderberries and introducing the local community and retail  and online sales to the variety of snacks, honey, beer, treats, etc that she's created. Plus she loves collaborating with local businesses including breweries to a chocolatier, local creamery, etc. Hearing Samara talk about her Elderberry Apple Butter just makes my mouth water. In Samara's words:"I am a maker of gourmet elderberry products based in WNC. While nearly everyone familiar with elderberry comes to it by way of health and wellness, I'm endeavoring to change the conversation by highlighting its culinary applications. In this pursuit I have developed recipes using my elderberry syrup and had a number of collaborations with regional businesses from cafes/restaurants, creameries/chocolatiers, and even bars/breweries." WEBSITE:  https://www.brewnaturals.com https://www.facebook.com/brewnaturalshttps://www.instagram.com/brewnaturals

"Ashkenazi or bust!" Brace yourselves folks, two Jewish Comediennes just entered a Zoom Room... Meet Lindsay Adams, Jersey born Comedian, Writer and Serial Baker. We both grew up in cities where being Jewish appeared to be rare. Lindsay says, "We didn't have a temple for a long time, so our congregation met at a church and the Rabbi would read the Torah under a large cross." Similarly in Texas, I attended Hebrew School at a Presbyterian Church because the nearest synagogue was 45 minutes away. Lindsay and I rock out to some Jewish hymns and discuss what the hell they put in Gefilte fish. This lady loves to dish about food, so much so after unfortunately having to put a pandemic pin in her interactive Live Baking Comedy Show called 'Bake Stuff' she launched a new podcast 'Snack Time' to continue the fun around food. She started baking to cope with the stress of the unstable world of comedy after being in the biz for 15 years. Like me, she no longer leans on the sauce unless its pesto or butterscotch...hold the scotch. Lindsay has spent years exploring the connection between emotions and mental health with baking. "Baking makes me feel more vulnerable in a way," which could be said of comedy, too. "Why can't we talk about suicide and bake cookies?" In this ep we also discuss cursive, corporate headhunting, childhood snacks and how stoked we are that live comedy has come back...outside! There's always a way to look at things differently. She says, "Quarantine has given me a chance to rediscover what makes me excited about comedy and performing." Lindsay admits she'd totally eat a cake out of the garbage, and so would I, so if she's not checked in to the Betty Crocker Clinic for a confection overdose, catch her at a show soon al fresco! You know those infomercials that keep upping the ante over the course of their pitch? You've heard the phrase, “But wait, there's more!” Interestingly, they do keep adding stuff on in a real way, and the trained watcher will know to wait until the end of the ad to order. The same limerick of “wait, there's more” easily applies with today's guest, Dr. Alan Koslow, on this episode of The Delicious Story. As you listen, you'll get:A peek into what it's like to be a physician on the frontlines during natural disaster.The inside story as to how Alan and a handful of young people helped save Star Trek.A look at how a group of youths including Alan created the most successful walk-a-thon campaign ever deployed by March of Dimes, which later became the template for other organizations. Be assured that as you listen to Alan, you'll be personally invigorated to get out there and learn something new, yourself, and stretch beyond your preconceived limits. SEVEN MINUTES AND 20 SLIDESI “met” Alan when I heard him speak about his medical mission experience in Haiti at a Pecha Kucha event in Des Moines a few years ago. In the space of about seven minutes and 20 slides, Alan provided details of what it was like to go into Haiti after the earthquake of 2010 and provide medical support in an overwhelming situation of human suffering. It was a riveting presentation, in part because of how unfathomable disaster events can be. But I was especially intrigued by Alan's attitude, this sense of optimism he exuded as he spoke of the people and the work. Soon after, thanks to a Facebook algorithm, Alan popped up as a friend suggestion. I made the request, which was accepted, and have been a vicarious follower ever since. Several months ago, it occurred to me Alan would be a great guest, and I'm thankful he was game. A QUICK SUCCESSION OF LEARNING AWAITS YOUDuring the interview, you'll probably learn a litany of things (I certainly did), so I've ticked off highlights to help you as you listen to Alan share stories. Early on as we visit, Alan concedes that some of his friends consider him to be akin to the movie character Zelig. However, unlike Zelig “who was a nondescript enigma that took on the strong characteristics of the personalities around him,” Koslow is a dynamic guy all his own (as you'll discover). Here are some major points to assist as you listen: •See if you can almost smell the food which Alan describes when he visited his immigrant grandmother's home in New York.•Do you know which country serves the best MREs (Meals Ready to Eat)? Hint: there is wine involved. •Alan speaks fondly of Gefilte fish. I've never had it, but New York Times provides a well-rated recipe for the dish here. •March of Dimes Walk-a-thon is considered one of the most successful money-making programs for the organization ever. Alan explains how he worked with other youths to create the first prototype, a model used by organizations for their “thon” events as well. •Sir. Patrick Stewart, if you're listening there's still time to thank Alan and a handful of other teenagers for keeping Star Trek alive. It turns out the knighted actor wasn't too chivalrous with our younger man Alan. •Alan's memorable meals story has little to do with food and a great deal to do with his love of science fiction. You'll learn a bit about World Science Fiction Convention and Dragon Conventions in this anecdote. •And along the same topic of science fiction, I had not heard of the Dragonriders series or Anne McCaffrey, you'll learn about those here. •Alan's comfort food is an interesting take on a classic. •Look for Alan to be a published children's book author in the future. His story of his first effort to write a book for children is fascinating. Alan became a man of intrigue for me a few years ago because, ironically, he is a guy who is curious and enthusiastic about new ideas and people in general. It's an inspiring model. At the time, this interview was recorded we were only a month out from realizing we would all soon experience a worldwide pandemic. So now, most especially, Alan's thoughts at the close of the interview resonate beautifully. There is hope. There is always hope.
