Channel F: “Channel 2 Season 2 Retrospective” (all tracks - MUSIC-ONLY!)

It's almost time again for our end-of-year “Best of Season 2” (C2R2), on Channel 2, where Hugues and I will pick a combined 22 tracks from the 72 total which we featured across all of Season 2 in calendar 2022. Like last year, we'll each pick 2 tracks per episode (one per episode per host from each of the two hosts), as well as each picking one wildcard track to serve as our episode opener and closer tracks. To build a little excitement for that episode, as well as to give you a handy refresher of everything we did this year, we have put together a music-only recap of the entire season's output (links will be included to each of the “full episodes” with Hugues and I's dialog included). Of the 72, we already  know which 22 we're going to feature as “Best of”s, but as there'll be no spoilers on it, you'll have to just guess and wait and see and hope your personal favorites make our cut! ;-) You can also email us at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com, or reach out to us on social media telling us what your top 11 would be (one track per host per episode, plus one wildcard), and if we get some submissions before recording time, we can mention them in the episode (or if we get enough of them, perhaps we can even make an Archive SUPER BONUS release out of them). The hotly anticipated Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge is here for your listening pleasure! The game saw several releases between 1992-1994 on the SNES, Genesis, Game Boy and Game Gear. It was developed by UK games company Software Creations Ltd., published by LJN on Nintendo systems and by Acclaim subsidiary Flying Edge on Sega systems. It's a bad game where you control 5 different characters: Spider-Man, Storm, Wolverine, Cyclops and Gambit in a gauntlet of tedious stages with great music (except Wolverine). The soundtrack was originally composed by brothers Geoff Follin and Tim Follin, no strangers to writing amazing soundtracks for mediocre games, many of them for Software Creations throughout the 80s and 90s. The arrangements for other systems were done by "Sound Images" on Genesis, John Loose on Game Boy, and Alastair (Allister) Brimble on Game Gear. We've disliked the game for almost 30 years but we hope you enjoy the music! I didn't have access to the studio and "the good mic" at the time, so I just did the best I could with my built-in laptop mic.    Track#, Game, System, Track Name, Composer, Timestamp:    01) Best of 2020 / 2021 Earcatcher: 00:00:00  02) Intro – 00:01:34  03) Chu Chu Rocket - Dreamcast - Challenge - Tomoya Ohtani – 00:03:40  04) Wolfchild - SNES - Map Screen - Martin Iveson – 00:06:33  05) Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge - multi - Rikuo - Takayuki Iwai, Akari Kaida and/or Hideki Okugawa – 00:08:15  06) Spellcaster  - Mastersystem - Action Screen - Sachio Ogawa – 00:10:04  07) Nightmare on Elm Street - NES - Elm Street - David Wise – 00:12:58  08) Doom II - PC (Midi - Yamaha DB50XG) - Underhalls - Bobby Prince – 00:15:54  09) So Many Me - multi - Volcano - Christopher Gechan and/or Daniel Byrne-McCullough – 00:20:41  10) SouhouBlue Phoenix - X68000 - Stage 4 - Shinoda Nobuhisa – 00:24:40  11) Nin2 Jump - XB1 - Autumn - Ryu Umemoto – 00:27:59  12) Lucid 9 - PC/Mac - Process of Elimination -  Blue Wolfie – 00:30:23  13) Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - SNES - Ice Pyramid - Ryuji Sasai, and/or Yasuhiro Kawakami – 00:34:22  14) Sonic 2 - Genesis - Mystic Cave Zone 2-player - Masato Nakamura – 00:37:20  15) Plok  - SNES - Beach - Tim and/or Geoff Follin – 00:39:09  16) Gran Turismo 5 - PS3 - Mirage - Kimmei – 00:44:16  17) Miitopia - 3DS - In That Holiday Mood (Vacation) - Toshiyuki Sudo, Shinki Ushiroda, Yumi Takahashi, and/or Megumi Inoue – 00:48:24  18) Outro – 00:50:37    Music Block Runtime: 00:47:02,  Original Total Episode Runtime: 00:54:40, 2022 Amended Total Episode Runtime: 00:56:13    Link to to the eligible tracklist for our upcoming Listener-selected "Best of 2020 / 2021" Episode. NNR Reruns: C1E1 - ”Press Start” (orig. released 01/05/2017)

So, I had meant to get this released on Jan 5th, so that our first rerun after the shutdown of the dedicated reruns feed on Buzzsprout, and the first gross output of the planned "second half" of Nerd Noise Radio's intended lifespan could release PRECISELY five years to the day after it originally premiered....but, you know....life. :-( Anyway, please accept it re-releasing instead on the "five-year, five-day anniversary" now! :-) Also, since this is the start of life on Nerd Noise Radio without a separate, dedicated reruns feed, let's go ahead and "start reruns all over again", and make our [so-called] "first rerun" be....our first episode! Yes, today's rerun is where it all started, everybody! C1E1 - "Press Start", an aptly themed focus on intro and/or title screen music to coincide with the launch the program, which, of course, originally released on 01/05/2017 - five years [and five days] ago! A couple quick notes of reflection on this episode from the perspective of a half-decade of reflection: 1) BEWARE: the production quality, particularly as it concerns the intro and outro is TERRIBLE! The music block itself, though, is certainly passable or better. But the intro and outro are.....CRINGE! Speaking of the music block: 2) due to a mistake on my part during capture, it was in mono (just like Episode 2 - an issue I had fixed by Episode 3). Also, 3) the fades are not quite as good, and the run order decisions are quite a bit more rudimentary, opening strongly, closing strongly, but mostly moving in circles in-between, only concerned with how well the tracks jive with their immediate neighbor tracks, and all but oblivious to the overall arch. But 4) otherwise, the music block itself is a fairly decent production, and chock full of the energy and joy and enthusiasm of new beginnings, buoyed upon the optimism and excitement thereof! 5) I made a mistake in track selection on one track in this collection: everything was supposed to be title screen and/or or intro sequence music, and yet "At DOOM's Gate" from DOOM 2016 is neither of those things. But I'm not gonna go back and change history by editing it out five years later. And it does at least sound good in the episode. So, it can stay. 6) Beyond the production value of the intro and outro being just ATROCIOUS, the scripting was far less developed than it has since become, albeit is less verbose as a result. 7) The most remarkable thing of all to me listening to C1E1 and, let's say, any of the first ten episodes is this: the early episodes are remarkably different in a hundred ways in micro.....but in macro, it's incredible just how little the show has changed, and just how close to "fully formed" the show ultimately was from its very beginning! I'm really proud of that! Way less polished, to be sure...but in essence, still the same show then as it is now!   So, please! If you have not already heard C1E1, and heard where it all began, warts, and glory, and enthusiasm and all, and just how very "different yet the same" it was compared to what Channel 1 has since become.....then, please, listen, and marvel, and enjoy! Oh, p.s: our other rerun this month (since there will be two), will be C1E2, its immediate successor episode. And despite it being subject to all the same complaints about the HORRIBLE intro and outro, mono audio music block, and the circular meandering of the track order, it still remains one of the best episodes we've ever done! Definitely the best of the first 10, in my opinion, and if I were to try to create a "top twenty episodes" list from our so-far 60 episodes, C1E2 would certainly be somewhere on that list! So, please don't miss it! Also, unlike today, I'll make sure to schedule the C1E2 rerun to release on the EXACT 5yr anniversary - 01/19/2022! :-) Cheers! -St. John ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the original show notes:   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   The moment has finally come - the Channel 1 podcast is HERE!    Today's broadcast is Episode 1 for ThemeThursday, January 5th, 2017. Today's Broadcast is C1E60, for Theme Thursday, December 23rd, 2021 - our final episode of our very non-standard two-year long “Season 4”. So it is fitting that we'd end such a wildly non-standard season - filled with primarily wildly non-standard content already - with such a dramatically non-standard Channel 1 episode. Today's episode abandons the customary Channel 1 “great big music block” mixtape format for a modified take on the original W.A.R.T. Radio format, featuring Trey Johnson of Nintendomain / W.A.R.T. Radio and St. John. Today's episode is also a “Lost Level”, as it was originally intended to be a Channel F bonus “F-isode” to supplement “C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol. 1” from December 2018, and was intended to release right after it, in a nearly identical presentation to what you receive today. As such, today's broadcast shall be “Listener Picks - vol. 2”. All music, other than the background music for the speaking portions was curated by listeners of the show, and are the roughly 60 remaining unused tracks from the pool of roughly 100 that were offered up for C1E40 in 2018, of which only 40 were used.    p.s. We apologize for the uncharacteristically poor audio quality on St. John's speaking voice. Details available upon request, but the short version is that John had technical difficulties on his end of the recording with "the good mic", but fortunately, we had a lower-quality backup recording on Trey's end over Zoom using St. John's built-in laptop mic. The sound quality is diminished, but the content is still preserved.     Note: All Speaking Portions originally produced in December 2021 by St. John     01: Intro     Timestamps: 00:00:00 - 00:05:18  Runtime: 05:18  Emceed by: Trey and St. John     02: Phillip Vaughn Music Block     Timestamps (Including Introduction): 00:05:18 - As we get towards the end of our run here on Buzzsprout with the dedicated reruns feed, I felt it would be apropos to share the first two episodes of Channel 1. A couple caveats: 1) The production quality of the intro and outro are -TERRIBLE-! 2) Due to a simple mistake on my part, the music blocks on these two episodes are in mono. I discovered and corrected the issue in time to save Episode 3, but not in time for episodes 1 and 2. But, these are both great episodes and great collections of music! Especially episode 2, and my enthusiasm at the start of my podcasting journey can clearly be felt. So, it's for these reasons that I hope you'll enjoy them! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The moment has finally come - the Channel 1 podcast is HERE!  Today's broadcast is Episode 1 for ThemeThursday, January 5th, 2017. Another extended play, very non-standard format, very talk-heavy retrospective of the first 49 episodes and three years of the show - in the style of an old W.A.R.T. Radio episode meets The Diad Presents meets Sound Test Roulette meets VGM Jukebox – multiple short micro-music-blocks with talking between.   Part 2 is "personal picks" - picks that I really like myself, most of which were near picks from my previous two "Best of 20XX – John's Picks" episodes - 1 track from each previous episode (minus best-of episodes), tracks chosen by either John or the listeners in any "Best of 20XX" installment are ineligible for The Golden Episode (and if a track that appeared in say, Episode 2, was chosen, but it also appears in Episode 17, 36, and 48, it is stricken from the eligible pool all the same. Each track must be totally unique to a "Wayback Wednesday" episode of NNR, which narrows the playing field, both in terms of tracks I can pick for myself as well as tracks I can pick for the listeners (part 1).   Each micro-music-block will be five tracks long, and each will represent the episode which it comes from. Rather than the usual NNR practice of focusing on the music block creating a logical, pleasing "flow", the Golden Episode (both parts one and two) will focus  instead on playing the tracks in episode order. So they won't flow nearly as well (unless by happy accident). But they will run in the order in which they appeared in the history of the show. Differing priorities this time. A typical NNR episode is all about a "journey through sound", and of course, this episode is that as well to some extent, but the real priority here is not about being a "journey through sound", but instead, is about being a "journey through time".   Here are the tracklists for the micro-music blocks for part 2, the "personal picks" installment:   Show Intro Music: somer assault (episode 1) - 00:00:00   Block 1 – Episodes 1-5 (2017 – part 1)   BGM Block 1 Music: yuukai douchuuki arcade (Episode 2)   Spoken Introduction - 00:05:04   01) Title – Spider-Man / X-Men – SNES – Tim and/or Geoff Follin - 00:13:06 02) Track 11 – Illusion Blaze – DOS – D.AC. - 00:14:07 03) Aitos – Actraiser – SNES – Yuzo Koshiro - 00:16:41 04) After the Battle – Loz: TP – Gamecube / Wii – Toru Minegishi and/or Asuka Ohta - 00:19:24 05) The Mechanic – Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake – MSX (SCC) - The Konami Kukeiha Club - 00:21:40   Block 2 – Episodes 6-10 (2017 – part 2)   BGM Block 2 Music: Fushigi no Umi no Nadia (episode 10)   Spoken Introduction - 00:23:42   06) September 2015 - N/A (System Music) - 3DS / WiiU – Kazumi Totaka - 00:30:22 07) Jiji Theme – Sword of Vermilion – Genesis – Hiroshi Kawaguchi and/or Yasuhiro Takagi - 00:33:33 08) Citizens of Luala - N/A (Battle of the Bits) - N/A (TG16) - Strobe - 00:34:18 09) Juno Unleashed – The Force Unleashed – Multi – Mark Griskey - 00:37:19 10) Space Opera – Tiny Toons: Buster Busts Loose – SNES – Kazuhiko Uehara and/or Yukie Morimoto - 00:38:23   Block 3 – Episodes 11-15 (2017 – part 3)   BGM Block 3 Music: Tyr (Heavy Armor) - Cosmic Carnage (Episode 13)   Spoken Introduction - 00:41:06   11) Enemy Turn (Stages 6-10) - Hisou Kihei X-Serd – PC Engine – Masaya Sound Team - 00:53:06 12) Stage 1 – Alien 3 – Genesis – Matt Furniss - 00:54:28 13) Zena Lan (Light Armor) - Cosmic Carnage  - 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto - 00:56:59 14) Lazarus (feat. 03:45:46   Music Block Runtime: 03:45:00, Total Episode Runtime: 03:46:28   SPECIAL NOTES ABOUT THIS "THE BEST OF 2018" PROJECT (this is a near exact repeat of the notes from part 1 if you read those): This is a once-a-year project that appears in two parts: a listener-picked part 1, which is more or less a standard episode, other than that the tracks are all pulled from episodes we released in the previous calendar year, and that those tracks were selected by the listeners, rather than myself. You heard that episode last week. This one, part 2, is all my picks, and is a MONSTER! 75 tracks, 3hr 45min! There are several reasons that we only resort to that kind of length just once a year. In part, to make it special and an event when it does happen, in part to not overwhelm the listeners and chase them off with it, and lastly…because it's a TON of work! :-D   One thing I like about the format of this once-a-year project is that it favors both the listeners and your host in differing ways. The listeners get the first word, with their episode releasing first. The listeners also get first dibs on any tracks, so if we both want the same track(s), they get them, and I don't. In this case, that happened with 16 tracks. In all those ways, this project favors the listeners. But then, where I come out on top is that I get the last word. Whereas the listeners only get 30-50 tracks to split amongst however many contributors we have (in this case, five), I come along afterwards, with an unreasonably gigantic allowance of 75 tracks….that I get all to myself.   Also, while the regular episodes are me trying to balance tracks I love with tracks that I think the listeners will like (which admittedly has something of a me-centric slant already), this 75 track outing is my one and only time a year where I don't have to worry about that balance at all, but is my lone shot of the year for complete, wanton, reckless hedonism. This one is all about me, baby! It's Papa's birthday! :-D But, if you ever wanted to get the clearest possible glance at where your intrepid host's own personal musical heartbeat lies…the 7X track John's Picks Best of 20XX episodes will be the best place to look, as all the filters are off…   ...well, save one: I make it a personal rule to include at least one track from every episode in my collection, even if that episode didn't have anything that would've otherwise made the list. Taris Apartments from C1E9 likely wouldn't have made my Best of 2017 outing last year, and neither Copacabana '93 from the April Fool's Episode (C1E26a), or maybe even Chill Penguin from C1E26, or Base 1 & 2 from C1E34 would've been likely to make my list this year either had it not been for my hard and fast rule to include at least one track from every episode. On the other hand, Taris Apartments, Copacabana '93, Chill Penguin, and Base 1 & 2 are all at least my actual favorite tracks from their given episodes.   Before I ever even approach any of the listeners for tracks, I already have a list of my own made up with a shorter auxiliary list of backups, and even a third list of backups to the backups, so that even if every single track the listeners pick is on my list, I still have enough in reserve to make my full 75. I get my 75 no matter what, but I can also stay completely out of the listener's way in picking tracks, and let them have everything they want. A win win for the both of us!   One last note about the Best of 20XX series (and this is true of both installments):   While it’s totally a labor of love, not only for myself, but also for the contributing listeners, it is also quite an undertaking for me - and in ways deeper than simply putting 105-125 tracks together! What it amounts to, metaphorically speaking, is my lining up all the statues I’ve sculpted over the previous year, and slicing little chunks out of them to use as building blocks to create an all new statue with the goal of making the new statues resemble the previous statues as little as possible.   A good song flow is more important than any of the following rules (and so any of the following are breakable – and were all broken at points – to make the flow work), but what else is going on besides simple song flow management is that I’m also trying to avoid placing tracks from the same episode too close together, or placing too many of the tracks in the same relative vicinity within the new music block as they were in their old music blocks, and even things like trying (in part 1) to limit the number of times where I feature tracks from the same listener back to back (though this rule was my lowest priority, and was the first to go out the window when there was a conflict).   I’m trying to use pieces of music that already have relational connotations in my mind to other pieces of music by way of the earlier episodes to create all new connotations with them. I will tell you that that’s much harder than it sounds. It adds a lot of cognitive "weight" to the processing load, because it creates reflexes with each piece that you now have to work against, more or less. In fact, each of our music blocks saw one or two scrapped iterations before I finally arrived at a track order that worked. And as is the case with part 2, when you’re staring at a list of 75 tracks, and asking yourself “what the hell am I supposed to do with these?”, it really makes you want to just curl into the fetal position on the floor!   But it’s also a lot of fun, and most of all, it gives me a chance to create all new art from existing art, and all new journeys and experiences from existing journeys and experiences. And so, at the end of the day, it’s all joy for me. I hope it will be for you as well, as the listener, and most of all, I hope that the contributing listeners will feel like I did their picks justice. Each of their contributions, from Jeshua’s three tracks all the way to Purnell’s twenty all mean the world to me. These episodes – both theirs and mine, are my love letter back.   As a bonus, for the curious, here is the list of backup tracks from my list that were not picked, and appear in neither episode (some of them I REALLY wanted, though):   Track, Game, System, Composer, Episode (spaces placed between episodes to better highlight)   1) Whisper and Mantra – Secret of Mana – SNES – Hiroki Kikuta - Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway.   Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1  ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS:    http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss   Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! Here's today's episode:   https://youtu.be/0kbqN-XRBn0   Additionally, there are YouTube Playlists you can follow, both an "All Channels" Feed (recommended), as well as channel-specific feeds. Back in November on Channel 1, we had our first FaceOff Friday episode, and with it, our first Nerd Noise Radio contest! The third person to e-mail nerdnoiseradio@gmail.com would get to have their picks featured in a bonus episode here on Channel F, and if they so chose, even guest host the intro and/or outro of the episode. If the winner would turn out to have a podcast or other project of their own they'd get the opportunity to promote it.   It turns out that winner was Trey Johnson, one of the hosts of the Nintendomain Podcast, as well as being the host of W.A.R.T. Radio, and one of the hosts of The Honey Darling Show. In order to maintain the elements of surprise, I will not say which parts (if any), Trey chose to guest host, and which parts (if any) I hosted as usual. Also, to maintain the element of surprise, the track list below DOES NOT indicate which versions of the tracks Trey selected. In the video version of this episode, the track versions are revealed in the pop-up at the beginning of each track, as well as in the track list in the outro. In the audio version, only in the track list in the outro. Of course, the astute listener will not require either aid to be able to determine which version they are hearing. However, as a general "roadmap" to the episode, the track list (minus version specification) is provided below. It also includes timestamps.   See below the track list for links to the episode, as well as links to Trey and the Nintendomain gang's body of work!   Cheers!   -John - Nerd Noise Radio     Track Number / Game Name / Track Name / Composers / Versions List / Timestamp   01: Intro 00:00 02: Spiderman vs the Sinister Six - Game Theme 1 - David Whittaker - 01:38 NES or Mastersystem 03: Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu - Stage 3 - Masakatsu Maekawa - 04:59 NES or TG16 04: Genocide 2 - Refreshing Breeze - Hideyuki Shimono and/or Naoyuki Kimora - 06:44 FM Towns or X68000 05: Zora’s Domain - c: Koji Kondo - 10:23 LoZ: OoT - N64 or LoZ: BotW - WiiU / Switch (a:Yasuaki Iwata) 06: Snatcher - Endless Pursuer - Konami Kuheiha Club - 13:00 PC88 (OPN) or Sega CD (YM2612) or PC Engine CD (HuC) or MSX (SCC) 07: Salamander (aka Life Force) - Power of Anger - Konami Kukeiha Club - 14:06 MSX (SCC) or PC Engine or Arcade (OPM) or NES 08: Final Fantasy VI (aka FFIII) - Serpent Road - Nobuo Uematsu - 15:10 GBA or SNES 09: Gunstar Heroes - Seven Force - Norio Hanzawa - 17:13 GBA (Gunstar Super Heroes) or Genesis 10: Wolfchild - Ancient Temple - c: Martin Iveson - 20:12 Amiga or Genesis (a: Matt Furniss) 11: Star Cruiser - Main Theme - Toshiya Yamanaka - 22:42 X68000 or PC98 (OPN) or Mega Drive 12: 1943 Kai - Stage 3 - Tamayo Kawamoto - 26:27 Arcade or PC Engine 13: Virtua Fighter 2 - Kage Theme - Saturn vs Genesis - Takayuki Nakamura - 28:29 Saturn vs Genesis 14: Dragon Spirit - Stage 6 (Glacier Land) - Shinji Hosoe - 29:57 Arcade / X68000 or TG16 15: Ghouls and Ghosts (aka Daimakaimura) - The Crystal Forest - Tamayo Kawamoto - 33:44 SuperGrafx or Arcade or Genesis 16: Kenji Yamamoto and/or Minako Hamano 36:13 Metroid Prime 2 - Gamecube/Wii - Lower Torvus Bog or Super Metroid - SNES - Brinstar Red Soil 17: Spiderman/X-Men - Storm Theme - Tim and/or Geoff Follin - 42:53 SNES or Genesis 18: Demon Seed - Konami Kukeiha Club - 47:17 Akumajou Densetsu - Famicom (VRC6) or Castlevania III - NES 19: NBA JAM - Jon Hey - 48:43 Sega CD (Team Select) or SNES (Team Select) or Arcade (Game Over) or Genesis (Team Select) 20: Outro - 49:53   Music Block Runtime: 48:34, Total Episode Runtime: 58:29   Video version of the episode (via YouTube) can be found here:   https://youtu.be/abaUlrbm4C0   Nintendomain and all of its satellite programs can be found at nintendomainpodcast.com, as well as on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.   Facebook: @nintendomainpodcast   Twitter: @nintendomainpodcast   YouTube: NintenDomain Podcast
