Today's “F-isode” is a look at the fabulous chip-tribute Album, “Time and Place”, written by Adam Frazier and Elijah Moore - on a program we're calling “A Time and Place for Time and Place” - recorded on-location at the Iowa State University campus radio studio! I mixed it down to mono for the episode so that it would at least come out of both speakers (and would be louder in the mix), but half the track info is still missing. I typically do not produce episodes this way, but this is what I had to work with in the studio context, and was unable to do anything else about it in post. 2) Usually, each voice is recorded separately so that I can adjust levels and apply compression etc to each element individually. In the case of this recording, all three voices, as well as the background music were all on just one track, so I could not adjust individual components individually. And in addition to the problems mentioned above with the background music, St. John's mic was hotter than Adam's and Elijah's since I was sitting closer to the mic than they were. I was able to mostly correct for this in post by applying more compression / limiter / amplify passes than are usually required. I think the final results on this point are actually pretty reasonably good, and this actually had the latent benefit of only further raising the volume on the BGM as well - which had been too quiet originally. 3) This part SUPER excites me! The ISU radio studio used Electro-Voice RE20 mics, where St. John typically records using a Shure SM7B. These two mics are within $50 in price of each other, and are collectively the #1 and #2 most commonly used mics in professional radio and professional podcasting contexts. I had always wondered and worried whether or not I made the right choice going SM7B instead of RE20, and how my voice would sound on the RE20 instead. This experience gave me the opportunity to find out, and I think the RE20 sounds fantastic! The jury's still out for me on which one I actually sound BETTER on, though, because I think the SM7B sounds pretty amazing as well. So any gearheads listening to this episode and reading these notes, please listen to either C2E13, C2E14, or C2E15 to serve as a comparative to this RE20-propelled episode and let me know which sound you prefer. It seems so far to be VERY dependent upon which set of headphones / speakers on which I'm listening to them. So I could -REALLY- use some second and third opinions etc. The SM7B recordings are brighter and more “natural” sounding (since I have the SM7B's “presence boost” feature enabled - a feature which the RE20 lacks), where the RE20 recording is warmer, rounder, deeper, and has more of that great “rrraadiiiooo” sound that I've actually been chasing after this entire time. The drawbacks are that the SM7B can sound a little thin and reedy, while the RE20 can sound a little muddy and boomy. I had talked about it depending on the speaker source. On some, the SM7B sounds thin and reedy while the RE20 sounds amazing, and on others, the RE20 sounds boomy and muddy while the SM7B sounds great! So, give em both a listen, and lemme know. I'm -VERY- tempted to buy an RE20 now after this experience, but if the consensus prefers me on the $400 SM7B which I already own, then perhaps that saves me the $450! You know, perhaps I'll just buy the RE20 anyway and try recording on both at the same time in the hopes of getting a best of both when I blend them in post. 4) Unlike with typical NNR episodes, track extensions do not loop smoothly, but “hard end and hard begin” to preserve how they appear on the album. It's a clunkier-sounding experience this way, but it was done to preserve the album content. 5) In the case of most of these tracks, I was able to sync the imposed high-quality audio files from the non-speaking portions to the BGM handoff points in the speaking portions. However, there were a handful that were near-misses. I hid these as best as I could, and doubt it'll create any listening difficulties, but I did want to acknowledge them. :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Links to Adam's and Elijah's works: Adam Frazier's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNNkqyHP4wS4FRcwkqN8SXA Time and Place Album (playlist): https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mhsNxGzAuuV15_8cc_gU9WlzZgHJrZGoc&si=by5lcVDrknk2FV0d Spotlight ISU (Elijah's Podcast): YouTube (with Video): https://www.youtube.com/@spotlightisu8022 Spotify (Audio-Only): https://open.spotify.com/show/4eEa7zaNA1YHhmUNxzo4fw?si=ec4bef01e95445cd Spotlight Episode 77 - featuring St. John of Nerd Noise Radio* Spotify (Audio-only): https://open.spotify.com/episode/5EDF0u5Q9LRF5pCMNqrYjN?si=0cn3oX_2RtGKuOJirGtg7A YouTube (Audio AND Video): https://youtu.be/9Xbcvqn4fDM?si=4aD4lKBJcG1vH-mU * = the Spotlight episode and the Nerd Noise Radio Episode were recorded on the same day, in the same place. Today's F-isode features video game music works from chipist and fellow VGM Podcaster, AJ Reyes, better known as “rayjkayj” of the VGM podcast VGMporium, and is our final contribution (of four) to MoVGM - season 2. A fifth was planned, but “man plans and COVID laughs”. Apologies also for a few “production shortcuts” used here due to the last minute nature of the production, as delayed by said interloper. Lastly, these tracks were all outtakes from C1E73 - UNKAYJ THE RAYJ! All tracks composed and arranged by rayjkayj using VGMusicMaker, Deflemask and Sunvox. Since some of these games were unreleased, the tracklist will not list what system they released for, but which retro game sound hardware the tracks were designed around in the following format: “chip name(s) [major system(s) that used said chip]”. I hope you guys like space games, because oh boy is this the episode for them. Not only are we shooting down aliens in Moon Cresta, but we're also doing it in Devil Zone, Quasar, and Galactic Space Wars on the Channel F! We also talk our favorite games from 2022!Website -https://historyofvideogamespodcast.comTwitter - https://twitter.com/HistoryofVideo1Email - historyvgpodcast@gmail.comHosts - Ben & WesMusic - Arranged and recorded by BenCan you guess this week's transition music? The theme is 'Best of Ben'
It's almost time again for our end-of-year “Best of Season 2” (C2R2), on Channel 2, where Hugues and I will pick a combined 22 tracks from the 72 total which we featured across all of Season 2 in calendar 2022. Like last year, we'll each pick 2 tracks per episode (one per episode per host from each of the two hosts), as well as each picking one wildcard track to serve as our episode opener and closer tracks. To build a little excitement for that episode, as well as to give you a handy refresher of everything we did this year, we have put together a music-only recap of the entire season's output (links will be included to each of the “full episodes” with Hugues and I's dialog included). Of the 72, we already know which 22 we're going to feature as “Best of”s, but as there'll be no spoilers on it, you'll have to just guess and wait and see and hope your personal favorites make our cut! ;-) You can also email us at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com, or reach out to us on social media telling us what your top 11 would be (one track per host per episode, plus one wildcard), and if we get some submissions before recording time, we can mention them in the episode (or if we get enough of them, perhaps we can even make an Archive SUPER BONUS release out of them). Today, we'll tell you the story of the Fairchild Channel F, the first home video game console to use cartridges. As part of the story, you'll learn all about Sherman Fairchild, William Shockey, the birth of Silicon Valley, the traitorous eight, the founding of Fairchild Semiconductors, and the development of the Channel F console. Join us for today's historical trip down Memory Card Lane.
We've modified the Channel F format to squeeze in more video games and the discussion thereof, but fear not, all the important bits are still here: the show is still hosted by merritt k, she's still trying to kill her guests (Nerium, Fūnk-é and Charles the Intern), and it's still an uproariously funny way to spend an hour and change. Segments: Surprising Moments of the Week, Live Game Check-In, Get Rec'd Games discussed: MultiVersus, Elden Ring, Live A Live, Fall Guys, No Man's Sky, Genshin Impact, Fortnite, Destiny 2, Poinpy More from Fanbyte: Fanbyte Podcast Network (We do other podcasts too!) The gang has this week off from our normal recording schedule due to a national holiday, so Producer Jordo (hey that's me!) cut together his favorite jokes and japes from the latest incarnation of Channel F, stretching from Episode 101 to Episode 159. Unless you're the O-est of OGs, you probably haven't heard a lot of the goofs in here! And if you're brand-new, there's no better place to start! We'll be back to normal next week, but until then keep that dial tuned to Channel F! More from Fanbyte: Fanbyte Podcast Network (We do other podcasts too!) An epic quest to uncover an early video game pioneer! As a teen, Jerry Lawson was a self-taught electronics wiz—building ham radios, making walkie-talkies from scratch, and repairing his neighbor's TVs. His love of new technologies brought him to California where he became one of the only Black engineers in Silicon Valley. While there, he changed the course of the video game industry with his revolutionary invention—the Channel F game console with interchangeable cartridges. Today, his legacy is paving the way for a new generation of inventive engineers!Go to the episode webpage: https://jonincharacter.com/jerry-lawson Visit the Dorktales Storytime Podcast website: https://jonincharacter.com/dorktales-storytime-podcast/YOUR KIDS ON OUR SHOW: Grownups, have your kids contact us for a chance to appear in a future episode: https://jonincharacter.com/contact-the-podcast/FOLLOW US: If our storytelling brings you some joy…and a few laughs, please follow us in your preferred podcast app so future episodes will automatically show up in your podcast library. For each episode of Channel 2, there are two separate Google Meet sessions between Hugues and I. The second one, where we meet to actually record the episode - an edited form of this second call is what ends up being the conversation portions of a Ch 2 episode. The first one, though, where we meet to establish run order for the tracks for the episode, you never get to hear because we never record it. Well, this time, we did. And the reason why we did was so that I could have something to listen to to see how Hugues and I sounded together with me using my new Rode Podmic dynamic microphone rather than my old AudioTechnica AT2020 condenser mic, to better help me decide which one I should use while recording with Hugues for Channel 2. See additional notes below to learn more! Legend: "AT2020 Raw" = Hugues and I's conversation with no post-processing except for volume adjustments, where I am speaking through the AT2020. "AT2020 Finessed" = the same, except for with the full battery of post-processing applied. "Podmic Finessed" = the same, except for my speaking through the Podmic instead of the AT2020. "Podmic Raw" = probably self-explanatory at this point: no post-processing and myself on the Podmic. Timestamps: Conversation begins with "AT2020 Raw" - 00:00:00 Hard switches over to "AT2020 Finessed" at - 00:03:39 Hard switches over to "Podmic Finessed" at - 00:07:15 Hard switches over to "Podmic Raw" at - 00:10:58 Hard switches back to "AT2020 Raw" at - 00:14:30 Hard switches back to "AT2020 Finessed" at - 00:17:47 Hard switches back to "Podmic Finessed" at - 00:21:45 And finally, hard switches back to "Podmic Raw" at - 00:25:11 Bonus: Excerpt from Archive SUPER BONUS "New Mic - Who Dis" featuring higher quality examples (both "Raw" and "Finessed") of me speaking into each mic than the lower-quality examples of each in the actual conversation. So, when we met to sort tracks for C2E7, I was talking into both the Podmic and the AT2020 at the exact same time, and we recorded our conversation, which I later edited to feature Hugues and myself together with me on the AT2020 and separately, us together with myself on the Podmic. I also had versions on each mic where I put us through my new battery of post-processing intended to improve our sound, vs versions on each mic where I kept everything "raw", with no adjustments whatsoever except for volume. And then I listened to all four, and had others listen to all four, and put snippets of each into an Archive SUPER BONUS which went into detail on the mics and gave loads of comparisons. Here's what I learned: 1) while we do sound slightly more consistent with me on the AT2020, and while I do sound slightly better on the Podmic, the differences in either direction were not "night and day". I didn't sound "way better" on the Podmic, and we didn't sound "way more consistent" with me on the AT2020. So, it was close enough that either mic would've worked. As such it mostly didn't matter, which left me feeling liberated to use the Podmic, which I did for C2E7 and C1E64 (C1E64 sounds even better than C2E7, in my opinion), as well as on my guest spot on NintenDomain episode 315 just a couple weeks earlier. 2) Don't attempt to use either of the good mics into both Audacity (good audio capture) -AND- into Google Meet at the same time. It made the output thinner, as well as way more prone to clipping / blowing out. There are a number of blow out moments in this recording that were not present in C2E7, and I largely attribute that to routing the Podmic exclusively into Audacity (which is what you heard in the final episode), and using a crappy set of Jabra mic/headphone combo headset (which you did not hear) for the Google Meet. Audio routing in Linux is both more flexible and malleable than in Mac or Windows on the one hand, and less intuitive / automatic / fluid on the other. And in this process I learned that how you route your audio seems to make a big difference. Another thing that bolsters my theory that the reason the recording quality on my end is so much worse than it was in C2E7 was because of using the mics into both Audacity and Google Meet at once, and not, say, simply that I was using both the AT2020 and the Podmic at the same time, is because prior to this meeting with Hugues, I had recorded into both at the same time as a test, but only ran it exclusively into Audacity, and they came out spectacularly. I included them in the aforementioned Archive SUPER BONUS, and as a bonus, I added just that segment of that super bonus with the much higher quality mic samples to the end of this after the meeting ends. The really crappy mic I use in the narration of that snippet (I.e. "this is AT2020 Raw vs Podmic Raw") was recorded on the aforementioned crappy little Jabra. 3) If the original sound source is not high enough quality, "click removal" can do more harm than good, by introducing popping. Though I didn't know it at the time, the reason the post-processed portions of this conversation sound "poppy", especially Hugues' side of the conversation - is because the source recordings were not high enough quality for click removal to be a benefit. Click removal was not used in the post-production of C2E7, and that's why there's no popping. In short: click removal can make a good sound clip sound even better. But it apparently makes a marginal one sound a lot worse. :-) Final Note: This conversation is slightly redacted, but mostly whole. There was a brief segment in the Spindizzy II conversation segment where I said something I felt shouldn't be in a recording, so I removed it. And then at the end, after business was done, we ended up talking for a while about living arrangements, which I felt also should be left out. This is why Hugues' "alright, I need to get out of here" at the end seems so abrupt. It wasn't abrupt. There was conversation missing. Other than for these two redactions, though, the rest of the conversation is otherwise complete and intact.
It's an unusually literary week on Channel F as Dillon, Danielle and D'Steven are put under the gun and/or crime novel by merritt, just before having their knowledge of 20th century French literature put to the test. Meanwhile, Dillon's quest to complete ancient video games continues, Danielle enjoys the retro-tinged spoils of modern game design, and Steven tries to make the latest hardware innovations function as advertised. Today's Broadcast is C1E60, for Theme Thursday, December 23rd, 2021 - our final episode of our very non-standard two-year long “Season 4”. So it is fitting that we'd end such a wildly non-standard season - filled with primarily wildly non-standard content already - with such a dramatically non-standard Channel 1 episode. Today's episode abandons the customary Channel 1 “great big music block” mixtape format for a modified take on the original W.A.R.T. Radio format, featuring Trey Johnson of Nintendomain / W.A.R.T. Radio and St. John. Today's episode is also a “Lost Level”, as it was originally intended to be a Channel F bonus “F-isode” to supplement “C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol. 1” from December 2018, and was intended to release right after it, in a nearly identical presentation to what you receive today. As such, today's broadcast shall be “Listener Picks - vol. 2”. All music, other than the background music for the speaking portions was curated by listeners of the show, and are the roughly 60 remaining unused tracks from the pool of roughly 100 that were offered up for C1E40 in 2018, of which only 40 were used. p.s. We apologize for the uncharacteristically poor audio quality on St. John's speaking voice. Details available upon request, but the short version is that John had technical difficulties on his end of the recording with "the good mic", but fortunately, we had a lower-quality backup recording on Trey's end over Zoom using St. John's built-in laptop mic. The sound quality is diminished, but the content is still preserved. For Michael's Channel F debut, merritt presents two of the most fiendish (and embarrassing) challenges seen yet, and two opponents that won't hold back: Jordo and Danielle. Oh yes; the company behind the very first second-generation console gets bought out - what does this mean for the Channel F?! We also go through a bunch of games including Bomb Bee by Namco and Lucky Puck Ice Hockey by Bambino!Website -https://historyofvideogamespodcast.comTwitter - https://twitter.com/HistoryofVideo1Email - historyvgpodcast@gmail.comHosts - Ben & WesMusic - Arranged and recorded by BenCan you guess this week's transition music? The theme is 'Best of Ben'
Today's “F-isode” is the complete collection of all music from season 1 of Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 2 (Sept 2020 - Sept 2021) ***PLUS***, the music from Hugues and I's December 2019 Channel F “one-off” that would go on to retroactively become the template, and “unofficial ‘beta'” for Channel 2. Though much longer, and a bit more clunky and unpolished, it is otherwise identical in format and fundamentally similar in delivery to what would go on to become the later Channel 2 “official episodes”. Now, this collection is JUST the music from these episodes, with all the conversation between Hugues and I scrubbed. However, I will provide iTunes links to each of the full episodes (plus the full beta) so that you can listen to these tracks IN CONTEXT if you wish, and can hear everything we had to say about them. Part of the reason I had included the tracks from the 2019 beta is to show where we've come from. Part of it is to show where we're going. Part of it is simply because it's full of really, really great music that you may have otherwise missed. And lastly, since starting with the “Best of 2020 / 2021” episodes in 2022, music from Channel F “F-isodes” will be eligible, unlike they were in 2020 for “Best of 2019”, I wanted to include them here now so that they'd finally be available to you or I for inclusion in our respective “best ofs”. But the single biggest reason for my sharing these with you now, in November of 2021 is simply to hopefully build some excitement for and engagement with December's “Best of Channel 2 - Season 1” episode, which Hugues and I will meet to produce, and will feature a grand total of 26 tracks, ***ALL OF WHICH*** pulled from today's collection of 92 - two tracks per host per episode, plus one “wild card” track pick per host. So, which 26 will we pull, and which 66 will we leave behind? And how well or poorly will our 26 align with the 26 that you, the listener, may have theoretically picked for yourself and/or predicted that we might pull? In December, we'll all find out together. And afterwards, you'll have to be sure to reach out to us to let us know! In the meanwhile, here's the source material we'll be pulling from: first, the 70 tracks from “Season 1 proper”, plus the 22 from 2019 in our beta afterwards. I hope you'll enjoy! Please get a hold of us on FB, or Twitter, or through e-mail at nerdnoiseradio@gmail.com with what your picks, and/or your guess of what our picks will be, and if we get them in time, we may even mention them, and engage with them during the episode! If you DO decide to play along, pick one “Hugues track”, one “St. John track”, and one wildcard, so we're dealing with the same number of tracks (as well as what your guesses are for our picks). Today's rerun was a VERY special occasion that I'm very excited to get to share anew. It was a Channel F "F-isode", originally broadcast December 19th, 2019 that at the time was intended to be nothing more than just a fun "one off" between two friends and fellow podcasters. And yet, it ended up becoming something so much more than that. Though not intended to be at the time, and though it will probably never "officially" be classified as such, it has retroactively become something of a "beta", or a "pilot", or maybe an "Episode Zero" for what would go onto become "Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 2". Though this trial run is much longer than a standard Channel 2 episode - because it contains nearly twice as many tracks, and though the conversation and production are clunkier, the basic formatting is fundamentally the same, and thus, this really can be retroactively considered to "the birth of Channel 2". Enjoy! Ahh, o próximo será do glorioso Atari 2600. In celebrating my receipt of the all-new Turbografx16 Mini yesterday, I thought that I would share my own personal Turbografx story from my childhood. Unfortunately, I don't have a recording that is nothing by the TG story. But what I do have is the Channel F Introduction post, which not only contains my TG16 story (centered around Christmas 1992 / December 2000), but also my "NES Story" - Christmas 1989, which, apart from the simply terrible production value as my very first release (even before the release of Episode 1) is just an incredible story! And in my opinion, the Christmas 92 story is not that far behind it in terms of story worthiness. I don't know whether I'd stand behind every single word I say in this recording, but I know one thing that hasn't diminished is my love for the TG16 / PC Engine. In fact, as a make-up for not doing this in March, I believe our rerun cycle for June will also center around the TG16...specifically, a certain mini-series co-starring Bryce Dumond of the Turbotastic Podcast! Stay Tuned! Meanwhile, enjoy this surprise bonus rerun - a surprise even to me, as I had not planned to do this until I had the Mini hooked up, and was playing through game after game of greatness! Whether you're a TG16 veteran, have only had the most fleeting brushes with it, have never played one....or perhaps have not even heard of it, you owe it to yourself to try it out! If you've got a spare $100 laying about, I STRONGLY recommend you pick up one of your own! Cheers!
[edit: A technical glitch I caught fairly quickly: if you go to listen to this, and it stops about an hour and 44 minutes in, and/or the timestamps behave all weirdly, delete it, mark it unread, and download it again, then you'll get the full episode....first timer blues, we'll call it.] :-) You are tuned to Nerd Noise Radio – Channel F. Today’s “F-isode” is significant not only for being only the second F-isode we’ve had in over a year, when they used to be quite a bit more common, but is also significant for being the first ever production of Nerd Noise Radio of any type to be produced entirely on Linux. Historically, the show has been produced on Mac. With a small backlog of previously-produced, but not-yet-released music blocks that were, of course, produced on the Mac still in reserve for future episodes, it will be some time yet before the Mac presence fades from the show completely. But it is my hope to do the lion’s share of future all-new production on Linux moving forward. So, the shift will be a glide, rather than a snap. But that shift starts...here. Longtime listeners of the show will know full well what a Channel F F-isode is, but a pair of really beautiful things happened early this month which will have brought new attention to the show, from faces as near and dear as my fellow Des Moinesers (and surrounding communities), to as far-flung as Linux fans all the world over. For an explanation of what Channel F is, and how it relates to Nerd Noise Radio as a whole for the newcomers, as well as the details of who and what the new faces are, and how all that came about, see below. Also, for a descripton of how this F-isode relates to our April Fool’s episode, “Backtracks”, see the blog....or just sit, back, relax, and enjoy, as you listen to.....”The OTHER 50”! Timestamps provided, but track details withheld for now in case anyone wanted to play the guessing game on the tracks. A follow-up blog post on April 30th will provide the entire track list information for both Backtracks and for today’s outing. So, be on the lookout for that. In the meantime, enjoy! The mini-article appears in the April Issue of the magazine which can be viewed online (Link below). In addition to that, Jason Evangelho, a tech-writer for Forbes Magazine who focuses on Linux very generously boosted my tweets about my first production in Linux, which went on to become the most liked and retweeted tweet in my history on the platform. I make it a point to look at “the numbers” as little as possible, so I don’t know how many (if any) of the new faces stuck around. But certainly a number of them at least had a peek. If you are a new face, either brought to the show through the Cityview article, or through Jason’s buff of my tweet, get a hold of me to let me know you’re here! Presuming we did have at least a few stick around, I should give an explanation of what Channel F is, relative to Channel 1, and Archive Super Bonuses, so you know how this show works. I will do so at length on the blogspot version of this episode, where the blog format is more accommodating of lengthiness. But I will give you a brief overview here: Channel 1: This is “the show proper”. These are “the actual episodes”. On average, 10 fresh episodes a year (with reruns to fill in the blanks). Other than extraordinary circumstances, they follow a standard “enhanced mixtape” format: a short, semi-standard intro, and standard housekeeping outro bookending a winding, twisting journey through sound. We have had quite the spate of non-standard “Channel 1” Episodes of late though, so for the newcomers, I wanted to stress what “normal” looks like. We don’t anticipate having anything else non-standard for several months moving forward. Channel F: This is my side-outlet for bonuses, betas, extras. It can be virtually anything. And additional mixtape music block (like today), but has been all sorts of things. We even had one that was an exposition on a certain episode’s outro. Anything that doesn’t fit in Channel 1, but that I still want to have full attention (podcast feed, blog, social media, Archive.org, etc) becomes a Channel F “F-isode”. Super Bonuses: These are for the times where I have something that I felt was worth producing, and felt was worth putting out there, but did not want to clog up the podcast feed, or the blog, or social media with. Generally, it takes the form of remixes and twists on existing content. Since they only come out on Archive, and not anywhere else, and since they’re not really advertised, this creates a nice “underground” quality to them. I usually drop hints inside Episodes and F-isodes if there are any Super Bonuses planned. But beyond that, a person just needs to know to be on the lookout. They will release even less consistently than F-isodes, but will also tend to be in bursts around certain episodes that are rich for alternate twists on their content. See the blogspot version of this episode if you’d like to know more about these. Link below. Meanwhile, our next all-new episode is planned for August, though I do have some really great reruns lined up for the months between. Even those will still constitute much more of a “return to normalcy” for the show than what our past several months of fresh content offers, so a great chance to “get to know us” I hope you will enjoy! We also have a secondary podcast feed which is dedicated entirely to reruns, which will feature reruns different than the ones on the main feed, if you wish to explore even more Nerd Noise Radio history. It can be found on your podcatcher of choice by the name “Nerd Noise Radio Reruns”. Cheers! St. John of "Nerd Noise Radio" and Hugues Johnson of "Retro Game Club" (and "The Retro League" alum) join forces to cover and discuss some of their favorite pieces of VGM from the 2010's.It's about what you'd expect if you put Retro Game Club / The Retro League, Nerd Noise Radio, Legacy Music Hour, and an entire decade of VGM in a blender....ooh, or maybe the hadron collider! For the time-being, this is just a one-time "one-off" special, but if there is enough demand from either, or especially both of our respective listener pools, then we're open to making this an ongoing (albeit occasional, and likely irregular) thing. "Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 2", maybe? ;-)Anyway, the power is yours, listeners! Make your voices heard! In the meanwhile? Enjoy! Q&A: >1. How did this article come about? I was a young professor at Oregon State University in 1979 and the personal computer industry was just getting started. Apple computer gave me an Apple ][e to play with, which started a long relationship and thinking about the disruptive nature of PCs. I began writing books and articles about them, eg How To Profit From Your PC, and The Mind Appliance. I think they were the first books on the topic. > Did you submit it or was it requested by the magazine? I don’t recall but probably it was unsolicited. I think it was little high-brow for Byte. > > Was it part of a larger research project? No. Back then, PCs were considered toys unworthy of academic study. Everyone else used the mainframe on campus. By 1985 I had a lab of 20-30 Macs for Master degree students to do their research on. It was a robust effort at that time and for OSU. > > > 2. Which "personal computers," according to your definition in the article, were you using at the time? > Like I said, Apple ][e, but before that I had a kit computer from North Star, which went out of business. But it had a disk operating system and BASIC burned into ROM. That was 1977. But when the Apple came out, it took over the market. > > 3. Your fourth law, concerning the high cost of producing software, seems prescient of the need for standardized hardware architectures. Were you imagining at the time that such a universal standard might be possible? Were you thinking that the S-100 was such a standard? How long did you think a standard in personal computing could last? > > Well you are right - the S-100 was a standard as well as Bill Gate’s BASIC. But I was thinking more in terms of what is now FOSS. Also, I was enamored by p-code UCSD Pascal. Boy was I wrong! > > 4. In laws 5 and 6, you talk about the usability of a personal computer as well as the service required to make that usability understandable to the consumer. Did you consider the existing machines you named in the piece as "simple" enough to be successful on the mass market at the time without the need to have the consumer to be held by the hand by a human service person? (aka you didn't need a human to explain a simple calculator but you did for most software packages at the time) > I completely missed the importance of GUIs until we got some Xerox Parc windows machines and then the Macintosh came out. They were so easy to use, you didn’t even need a manual. Totally surprising. I missed this again when the iPhone came out. I was right about ease of use, but totally missed the impact of GUIs. > > 5. Had you already seen Visicalc at the time of writing this piece and, if not, would it have changed any of your views concerning interface and usability? I wrote the first book on spreadsheets, 32 VisiCalc Spreadsheets, soon after. It paid off my mortgage! But I never thought of it as a GUI. And of course it was. It was an example of ease of use. I was stuck in a BASIC paradigm, were the language was the interface. There had to be better interface, but I was stuck in the command line interface. > > 6. Law 8 makes a rather bold statement concerning operating systems. Do you think this statement was true at the time, and if so, what changed in the technology or the market place to make operating systems as ubiquitous as they are today? I am sad to say that operating systems are still too primitive. We are stuck with Unix and it’s derivatives. I consider Unix (Circa 1976) to be a major misstep in computing, akin to the original sin. It stripped out the security of Multics and usability of VMS. Much of what is wrong with computing today is traceable back to Unix and Linux. Nuff said. > > 7. Law 10 seems to sound an ominous warning for the future. How has the propagation of personal computing over the last 40 years differed from the way you imagined it at the time? (yes, I know, a very narrowly crafted question) :) Well the more time that passes, the less accurate become predictions. Wireless internet has changed everything. Mobile computing and cloud are the result. The future is probably wireless 5G with a computer in everything down to light bulbs and toothbrushes. When quantum computers take over, the Internet and its computers will have to be reinvented. > > I hope this isn't asking too much. I really found the article fascinating and trying to put such things into a proper historical context is the main goal of our show. No problem. Thanks for reminding me that I wrote the article 40 years ago. The creation of the Episode 32 Outro was unique for the show, and very, VERY special for me. It was a family project involving the wife and the kiddo. Since this was a labor of love with people I love, I'm sure not all of the heart-swelling magic that I feel about it will be fully transferrable to an audience who doesn't know them. Here is my best effort to transfer as much of that magic to you as possible. WARNING: This submission is SUPER-DUPER LONG – like “Insane in the Membrane” long!!! Like, take a week to make the track list long!!! It’s the musical version of a “tl;dr”. And now for a non-musical version of one, here’s the explanation (with track list to follow): If you’re new to Nerd Noise Radio, and feel this is oppressively long, fear not (and certainly unsubscribe not)! This is not at all indicative of a standard episode! Typically, episodes generally find themselves in the half hour to an hour and a half range. This is a once-a-year super-duper track-fest that is as long as it is because I couldn’t be more committal! I created a list of all “candidate” tracks from 2017 that I would consider for a favorites episode….and ended up with a whopping 122 tracks! For perspective, an ordinary episode of NNR is anywhere from 20-35 tracks. So, I started pruning back the list with the goal of hitting 40 tracks, mayyyybe 60 at the extreme. I started by cutting the tracks on my list that were already featured via listener picks on C1E25: The Best of 2017 since you, the listener just heard them a few days ago. I did include a list at the very bottom of these notes featuring the tracks that were in C1E25, and were therefore cut from my list so you can know which tracks they were. I gradually whittled my list down to 70 tracks, but couldn’t think of any more to cut. And besides, with so many tracks that I would’ve wanted featured absent already, and so many “me tracks” already featured on C1E25, I felt like I was beginning to approach the precipice of this not being worth doing anymore if I cut too many more out. It wouldn’t be representative enough, especially when there was already a good representation of “my tracks” selected by the listeners in the proper Channel 1 episode….. …..and thus….. ……..a 70 track, 3hr and 23 minute long music block JUGGERNAUT!!!! Actually, 71 tracks! I realized belatedly that in my quest to trim it back, I trimmed out all the NES tracks….and we just couldn’t have a Best of 2017 episode without AT LEAST ONE NES TRACK, am I right? There were already a pair of FDS tracks which, to be fair, is just an NES and then some, but it’s still not quite the same, don’t you agree? So, our opening track was a last second addition to make sure we got some real deal NES glory in this monster. I hope you’ll feel it fits. This is already long enough that I can’t feature it on the dedicated Channel F feed, so it will only be appearing on the All Channels Feed, on YouTube, Twitch, Archive, and Blogspot. Also, due to the extreme length, the customary intro and outro of a typical Channel 1 episode were cut, meaning that this episode is pretty much JUST the music block! If you’re catching this via the “video-ified” version on YouTube or Twitch, I will still include pop-ups for each track. But if you’re listening to an audio-only version, like podbean (the All Channels Feed), or Archive, then the ONLY place where you will find track info is in the show notes! So, they are more important than ever! In the case of YouTube, which has a character limit for descriptions, I fear that I may run afoul of that, and may need to move the tracklist to the comments section instead. So just keep an eye out for that. If you don’t see a track listing in the description, then you know where to look next. :-) All that said, I actually am really proud of this track list – particularly the track ordering. We start out with a fun, happy block, followed by dark, then intense, then weird, and then…..well, you’ll just have to tune in to follow the carefully curated ebb and flow and weave of this winding, twisting musical journey. I will say that other than our very last track, which has a PERFECT “goodbye” feel, we wrap things up with a jazz block. So, it’s truly an “all over the world” musical experience! And how we get from happy, to dark, to intense, to weird….and then to jazz is a question you’ll have to find out for yourself by listening. If you can survive the 3 ½ hour non-stop trip, I promise you that it is the biggest, boldest, broadest, richest, most ambitious journey I’ve taken you on as a podcaster! Lastly, I made sure to get at least one track from every episode in here. Had I been going by pure preference, the track list may have looked a tiny bit different (though not much), but having as my secondary goal to get every episode involved, I made the list the way I did, picking my favorite track(s) from the episode not already featured on C1E25. In the case of C1E7 (the Sword of Vermilion soundtrack), my favorite track, Statts, was already taken, and it became a multi-way-tie for second favorite, so I just chose a track that I thought would go well in the mix. I chose Dungeon 2. Anyway, I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it! 2017 was a great year for the program, and I’m convinced you’ll find 2018 even better…..I know I do ---- which means this task for me will be even harder next time! Get ready for 90 tracks next time…..maybe 91! ;-) Cheers! -John (Nerd Noise Radio) Track Number – Track Name – Game – System – Composer – Episode Originally Appearing on – Time Stamp (unless obviously otherwise) :-) 01: Intro – 00:00:00 02: Title Theme – Solstice – NES – Tim Follin – Ep 16: 00:00:15 03: Lovely City - Lovely Planet - Multiplatform - Calum Bowen - Ep 4 – 00:03:09 04: Nice Day - Spindizzy II - X68k - Toshiya Yamanaka - Ep 2 – 00:05:44 05: Chilled Reflection (Feat Rudy Escobar) - DYA – Neon Dreams (Album) - Ep 14 – 00:09:15 06: July 2014 - eShop Music - WiiU/3DS - Kazumi Totaka - Ep 6 – 00:11:35 07: Stage 1 - ChipChan-Kick - PCFX - Yoshio Furakawa, Masahara Iwata, and Hitoshi Sakamoto - Ep 4 – 00:14:28 08: Fun with Laser Guns - FearOfDark - FDS – BotB Winter Chip 8 – Ep 8 – 00:17:40 09: Metro City Subway - Final Fight CD – Sega CD - c: Harumi Fujita, Hiromitsu Takaoka, Junko Tamiya, Manami Matsumae, Yasuaki Fujita, Yoko Shimomura and/or Yoshihiro Sakaguchi / a: T's Music - Ep 15 – 00:21:11 10: High Sky - El Viento – Genesis - Motoi Sakuraba - Ep 16 – 00:23:15 11: Snow Land - Wiz 'n' Liz - Genesis – Matt Furniss – Ep 12 – 00:25:37 12: Tachy Touch - Knuckles Chaotix - 32X - Junko Shiratsu, Mariko Nanba - Ep 2 – 00:27:53 13: Ethnic Cave and Flame - X-Men - Arcade - The Konami Kukeiha Club – Ep 10 – 00:28:54 14: The Vile Peaks - Final Fantasy XIII - PS3 - Masashi Hamauzu – Ep 10 – 00:31:24 15: Twilight Palace (Outside) - LoZ: Twilight Princess - GC/Wii - Toru Minegishi, Asuka Ota - Ep 4 – 00:34:10 16: Options - Bram Stoker’s Dracula - Genesis - Matt Furniss - Ep 2 & 17 – 00:37:18 17: Intro - Sabre Team - Amiga - Matt Furniss - Ep 12 – 00:38:46 18: Cycle 1 - Streets of Rage 3 - Genesis - Motohiro Kawashima w Yuzo Koshiro) - Ep 2 – 00:41:38 19: Bonus 1 - Second Samurai - Mega Drive – Matt Furniss - Ep 12 – 00:44:51 20: Mission One - T2: The Arcade Game - Genesis – Matt Furniss – Ep 12 – 00:46:19 21: Traveller's Tales - Knight Arms - X68k - Toshiya Yamanaka - Ep 2 – 00:48:30 22: Yug's Stage - Cosmic Carnage – 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto – Ep 13 – 00:51:05 23: Stage 5-2 – Bram Stoker's Dracula – Genesis – Matt Furniss – Ep 17 – 00:53:01 24: Stage 4-3 - Bram Stoker's Dracula - Genesis – Matt Furniss – Eps 12 & 17 – 00:55:30 25: 4th Cause - Psychosis - TG16 - Atsuhiro Motoyama – Ep 4 – 00:58:17 26: Naja's Stage - Cosmic Carnage – 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto – Ep 13 – 01:02:47 27: Gong Shun Sheng - Outlaws of the Lost Dynasty (Dark Legend) - Multi - Seiichi Hamada – Ep 4 – 01:04:56 28: Dungeon 2 – Sword of Vermilion – Genesis - Hiroshi Kawaguchi and Yasuhiro Takagi - Ep 7 – 01:07:34 29: Swamp - Samurai Ghost - TG16 - Gappy, Miyoshi Okuyama, and/or Hiroyon – Ep 20 – 01:09:47 30: Passage - Destiny - PS4/XB1 - C. Back in November on Channel 1, we had our first FaceOff Friday episode, and with it, our first Nerd Noise Radio contest! The third person to e-mail nerdnoiseradio@gmail.com would get to have their picks featured in a bonus episode here on Channel F, and if they so chose, even guest host the intro and/or outro of the episode. If the winner would turn out to have a podcast or other project of their own they'd get the opportunity to promote it. It turns out that winner was Trey Johnson, one of the hosts of the Nintendomain Podcast, as well as being the host of W.A.R.T. Radio, and one of the hosts of The Honey Darling Show. In order to maintain the elements of surprise, I will not say which parts (if any), Trey chose to guest host, and which parts (if any) I hosted as usual. Also, to maintain the element of surprise, the track list below DOES NOT indicate which versions of the tracks Trey selected. In the video version of this episode, the track versions are revealed in the pop-up at the beginning of each track, as well as in the track list in the outro. In the audio version, only in the track list in the outro. Of course, the astute listener will not require either aid to be able to determine which version they are hearing. However, as a general "roadmap" to the episode, the track list (minus version specification) is provided below. It also includes timestamps. See below the track list for links to the episode, as well as links to Trey and the Nintendomain gang's body of work! This is John’s picks from Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 1’s C1E18: Face-Off Friday - vol. 1 (Nov. 2017). I’ve hidden the version details in this track list so as not to “blow the punchline”. However, track list provided at the end of the episode does list the version info. Also, in the case of the YouTube video version, there’s a pop-up for each track, and those provide version info as well. Also, I had one tie, where both (or all) of the versions included in the original episode are still included here. Though not stated explicitly in this track list, the very astute observer will likely be able to glean where that tie is. Content will come out as it’s available, rather than on a regular, or semi-regular schedule as is the case with Channel 1. In some cases, this will mean a bunch of content coming out rapid-fire. In other cases, there may be months in-between new content. Please do not unsubscribe during those drought periods. Also, a reminder: there is a contest! Third person to e-mail me at nerdnoiseradio@gmail.com will get to curate their own list of picks from Face-Off Friday - vol. 1, and I will produce and release it on Channel F in late January. Lastly, since this was produced on 12/28/17, it is the one-year anniversary of the passing of my dear friend, Chris Chandler, and thus, this production is dedicated to his memory. To hear a fuller tribute to him, see Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 1 - C1E10: “Mishmash Monday - vol. 1”. Until next time! Fly the N!!! Cheers!
Tales of the glories of Christmases long long ago.......and tales of the glories of an all-new Channel from the Nerd Noise Radio Network - plus a certain special "re-run" embedded at the end! Merry Christmas (etc), Noisers!!! p.s. First Appearance of the new Nerd Noise Radio logo and background design scheme for 2018. I hope you like it! It's purposely lo-fi, but hope that comes off in the good way, rather than the bad way. Also, as a fledgling (and I mean SUUUUUUPER fledgling) student of Japanese, I just couldn't resist. ;-)
