In this special video episode, host Peter Bauman (Le Random's editor in chief) speaks with artist Loucas Braconnier (Figure31). They discuss DEL, a two-year project that began life as a terminal-based C application with a "Grim Reaper" persona before becoming a browser-native work. It consists of globular "bodies for the Ethereum network" rendered in real time as ASCII art. They go over Braconnier's path into blockchain art and his attraction to work that evolves over time, the discipline of building for longevity, and a wider conversation about how AI and new tools shift the artist's focus from technical skill toward conceptual intent. In the second half, Braconnier gives a live demo of the work and a visual walk-through, showing how its entities express network data through behaviors like twirling, meditating, or trying to escape the viewport.Monday's Editorial: Jakob Kudsk Steensen on Non-Human Pathways Chapters

This week, Laika Rountree chats to Crawley and Harry about multiple productions, such as How To Catch a Grim Reaper and Macbeth INC, and they chat to Suzy Eddie Izzard about her show at the NZ Comedy Festival, The Remix: The First 35 Years, and her upcoming show later on in the year, Hamlet.
We like to imagine the Grim Reaper as a helpful and misunderstood entity, clocking in for a very intense job. But after these stories… we're not so sure. We're getting into listener encounters that range from oddly funny to deeply unsettling, all circling the same shadowy figure who seems to show up a little too early and a little too often. Grim Reaper appearances include: A shadowy, eight-foot figure appears beside a listener's bed before returning in a dream to whisper “it is your time.” A hooded presence repeatedly appears throughout a listener's life during a series of near-death experiences. An unseen “man in black” pacing closer and closer to a hospital patient throughout a nurse's shift before the patient suddenly passes. A hooded entity sitting beside an apparition of a deceased relative at a funeral, sharing a quiet, eerie moment before vanishing. Can an infection from the 1800s really be trebling in Australia right now? Is there actually a cell in the human body large enough to see without a microscope? And how do you protect your gut microbiome? In this episode, Dr Mariam and Claire speak to Dr Melanie Besser, a Sexual Health Physician, to unpack why 'old-school' infections like syphilis and gonorrhoea are surging across the country. They discuss the rise of antibiotic-resistant 'superbugs', the "Great Mimic" rash you shouldn't ignore, and why the 1980s Grim Reaper campaign might have left us more traumatised than protected. We also talk about why Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is now being viewed through a lens of sexual transmission and how treating a male partner might be the key to stopping the cycle of recurrence. Plus, we look at the new "foxy" pathogens like Mycoplasma genitalium that are being talked about on TikTok and why they're often mistaken for a standard UTI. In Med School, we discover the powerhouse of the human body: the egg. And, in the Quick Consult, we explain how microbiome shifts after major surgery. This is a story passed down from a grandfather who worked nights in a rail yard in the 1940s. When a building caught fire, he rushed inside without hesitation, moving floor by floor to help anyone still trapped.By the time he reached the upper levels, the conditions had worsened, and the chances of finding anyone alive were fading. But as the smoke shifted, something else came into view—something that didn't belong in a rescue scene. At first, it was easy to question what he was seeing in the chaos. But the longer it remained, moving with purpose through the space, the harder it became to explain. It was a moment he carried with him for the rest of his life—one he never fully understood, but never forgot.#ParanormalEncounter #GrimReaper #NearDeathExperience #SupernaturalEncounter #UnexplainedPhenomenon #LifeAndDeath #HauntingExperience #RealGhostStory #SomethingInTheFire #ParanormalActivityLove real ghost stories? Gold Coast winter Olympian and social media sensation Desi Johnson joins the show to talk about her journey from sprinter, to flying down the hill in a bobsleigh! A crazy and unexpected adventure into the unknown for one of the GC’s most exciting upcoming stars. The QLD Government has launched a new campaign called “Operation Interpose” after a horror run on the roads, but no one seems to have actually heard of it. Spida questions whether it’s just another forgettable campaign, especially compared to hard-hitting campaigns like the Grim Reaper. He makes some proposals based on other campaigns like “Drive like your mother is watching,” and the NT’s “C U in the NT”.” Right now, “Operation Interpose” isn’t cutting through, so maybe we get Lara Bingle to reimagine the “where the bloody hell are ya?” The annual LinkedIn review is out for the top 20 places to work in Australia, with CommBank somehow topping the best list - but Liam took things in a very different direction, unveiling his own “investigative journalism” into the bottom five. A new spot called “Somewhere Good” is opening in Surfers Paradise, where you can pour your own pint, sparking a bigger debate about hospitality. Spida drops a huge call, saying service here is terrible and tipping should be brought in, arguing the U.S. does it better. Let’s just say the public is not with him. Leisel somehow snagged a ticket (it’s free…) to the most exclusive event on the Gold Coast – Annastacia Palaszczuk’s book launch at the library! Liam sets a challenge to buy a book to get a copy signed, with a bit of a twist.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode, Alex connects the dots between pop culture and political absurdity, starting with Karol G making history as the first Latina to headline Coachella—a moment that doubled as both a cultural milestone and a subtle political statement about identity and belonging. From there, the conversation spirals into the internet's favorite running joke: JD Vance as a Grim Reaper figure who seemingly dooms every event he touches—though notably, he did not attend Karol G's set, perhaps explaining why it went so well. Finally, Alex imagines a chaotic bipartisan fever dream where Marjorie Taylor Greene and Ro Khanna form an alliance, proving that in modern politics, anything is possible—except JD Vance having a normal week.
Inspired by our Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame discussion last week, we decided to test our Metal. Being trivia buffs, we came up with the idea of Aaron testing Snowy on his knowledge of said HOF. Essentially, Aaron threw out an artist and Snowy had to take an educated guess as to the year they went into the Hall. You'll be able to hear the wheels turning through your device. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we pay tribute to Motorhead's Phil Campbell. Rest In Power!! Musically, we crank some Jello Biafra, Artillery, Repulsion, The Great Kat, Steve Grimmett's Grim Reaper, Persian Risk, Poison Dollys, Blood Oath and we introduce TX thrashers Accuser in our "Indie Spotlight". In this episode, the Dr. Anna Marie with Jodi Wellman, founder of 4000 Mondays, about using the reality of our mortality as a powerful motivator to actually live. Drawing from her personal story of losing her mother, her work in positive psychology, and the concept of "memento mori," Jodi explains how acknowledging death can wake us up from autopilot, help us savor ordinary moments, and push us to avoid "pre-grets"—the regrets we're on track to have if we don't course-correct now. They explore savoring past, present, and future, living both wider (more fun, vitality) and deeper (more meaning, purpose), and taking small but bold actions to get off the sidelines of our own lives. Key Points Using the Grim Reaper / memento mori as motivation to truly live Waking up from autopilot and choosing a "squander‑free" life Jodi's mom's unfulfilled dreams as a powerful wake‑up call Leaving a comfortable corporate job for more meaningful work Creating 4000 Mondays and using "mortality math" to spark urgency Savoring past, present, and future moments to feel more alive Balancing life wider (fun, vitality) and deeper (meaning, purpose) Noticing that disappointment and fear keep us from big dreams Understanding regrets of omission (what we never try) hurt the most Taking one small, concrete action now as a vote for being fully alive Connect with Jodi Wellman: Jodi Wellman is a leading authority on living lives worth living. As a TEDx speaker, researcher, and author, she helps people live squander-free lives while they're lucky enough to still be above ground—starting with the "big end" in mind. She named her business Four Thousand Mondays to shine a light on the finite number of weeks we have to truly live with intention. She holds a Master of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where she serves as an Assistant Instructor in the master's program and a trainer in the world-renowned Penn Resilience Program. Through her research, she developed a model that teaches the interplay between living wider (with vitality) and deeper (with meaning), empowering people to experience life more fully. A certified coach with 25 years of corporate leadership experience, she has coached hundreds of companies, teams, leaders, and individuals over thousands of hours to "carpe diem" at a highly advanced level. Host Meg Wolitzer presents three stories in which reality contrasts with the dreams, perceptions, and actions of the characters. In “The Leap,” by Louise Erdrich, a mother's unusual skill set changes the outcome of events. The reader is Elizabeth Reaser. In “Death and the Lady,” by Ben Loory, even the Grim Reaper harbors illusions. And his parents' damaged marriage haunts an adult child in Delmore Schwartz's “In Dreams Begin Responsibilities.” Both the Loory and the Schwartz are read by multi-talented actor Denis O'Hare, and Wolitzer talks to him about his craft. Everyone is panicking about AI taking jobs, but some new data from NBER indicates we may have a different problem on our hands, especially when we take into consideration the impending labor shortage. However, it's worth noting that headlines can be deceiving. The data reveals a much more sobering reality that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone actually looking at the demographics. Despite the hype, a massive study of 6,000 firms reveals that the projected job loss from AI is a rounding error, just 0.7% globally over the next three years. In summary, while the "fear" of AI is skyrocketing, the absolute impact is miles away from "replacement." So, while countless voices are claiming AI is coming for your job, the real crisis is empty desks, not unemployment. This week, I'm digging into the new NBER report and comparing the "Grim Reaper" narrative against the stark reality of the global labor market. This isn't a tech review but a workforce reality check. I explain why a 1.2% reduction in US jobs is technically a loss but practically a disaster when matched against the 3 million Boomers retiring annually. I'm also stripping away the alarmist headlines to show you why the "Mass Layoff" narrative is being driven by fear, not financial reality. My goal is to move you out of "Protectionism" to "Preparation" by exposing the specific blind spots threatening your P&L.The "Grim Reaper" Myth (Data vs. Doom): We've been told mass layoffs are imminent, yet the NBER data proves the "impact" is barely scratching 1%. I break down why leaders aren't planning to fire their teams—they are desperately trying to figure out how to replace the talent that is walking out the door due to retirement. The "Tinkering" Trap (Usage vs. Utility): We love to believe we are transforming, but the average executive only uses AI for 1.5 hours a week. I call out the uncomfortable truth that "casual use" yields zero productivity gains and why you need to move from "users" to "surgical pilots" immediately if you want to survive the talent crunch. The "Brain Drain" Emergency (Mentorship as Survival): You cannot automate institutional knowledge. I share why the "Apprenticeship" model must flip, using AI for drafting so seasoned folks can focus on coaching, and why leadership development is now a survival mechanism to capture wisdom before it retires.By the end, I hope you see this data not as a reason to ignore AI, but as a mandate for urgency. You cannot simply wait for the labor shortage to hit; you have to build the infrastructure now that can sustain your business when the talent pool dries up.⸻If this conversation helps you think more clearly about the future we're building, make sure to like, share, and subscribe. You can also support the show by buying me a coffee at https://buymeacoffee.com/christopherlindAnd if your organization is wrestling with how to lead responsibly in the AI era, balancing performance, technology, and people, that's the work I do every day through my consulting and coaching. This week, the lads hop across the pond to continue excavating denim and leather. It's all about the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal! The NWOBM movement was filled with passionate bands that were poised to take over the world. Unfortunately, most of them didn't make it to the level of Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, or Saxon. Hopefully, we can help spread the word and sounds for those who didn't. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the LOST. For such a small island, they sure had a lot of amazing bands that set the standards for what is known as heavy metal. From the music, to the fashion, to the attitude… Over 45-years ago, these bands started an underground movement that would change hard rock and metal forever. Songs this week include: More – “Warhead” from Warhead (1981) DEMON – “Night Of The Demon” from Night Of The Demon (1981) Grim Reaper – “Run For Your Life” from See You In Hell (1983) Bronz – “Heat Of The Night” from Taken By Storm (1983) Witchfynde – “Give ‘Em Hell” from Give ‘Em Hell(1980) Marseille – “Rock You Tonight” from Marseille (1979) Aragorn – “Black Ice” from The Neat Singles Collection Vol. 1 (1981) Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!:InObscuria Store Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/ https://www.facebook.com/InObscuria https://x.com/inobscuria https://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/ Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/ If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/ If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Another Marvel character, Simon Williams (aka Wonder Man), got his own streaming series. This "review" isn't just going to re-read the Wikipedia entry; we're diving deep into the ionic-powered deep end to figure out if this show is a legit hit or just another forgettable piece of spandex-clad filler. Introduction: Wonder Man? Is That a Store Brand Hero? For those of you who just know Captain America and the one with the hammer, Simon Williams is basically the MCU's resident struggling actor/stuntman who also happens to be a walking ball of pink energy. He's an Avenger sometimes, but mainly he's the guy who has to deal with his super-villain brother, Grim Reaper, who probably still shows up uninvited to Thanksgiving. We're setting the scene for how Hollywood turned this surprisingly messy comic book star into a prestige TV series—and if they remembered to include the ego.Episode-by-Episode: The Roller Coaster of "What Is Happening?"Starfleet Academy - Episode 4 Analysis: This week, we offer an in-depth review and analysis of the fourth episode of Starfleet Academy. The discussion will cover the critical developments within the main storyline, the character arcs of the new cadet class, and the implications of the latest twist for the future of the Star Trek universe. We'll explore the technical merits, thematic resonance, and Easter eggs planted throughout the episode, debating whether it met fan expectations and where the season is heading next. The Future of God of War: Rumors and confirmed details about the next installment in the critically acclaimed God of War franchise are heating up. We examine the current information stream, speculating on the new mythology the game will explore following the Norse saga. Will Kratos and Atreus venture to ancient Egypt, Japan, or another mythological pantheon? We discuss potential gameplay innovations, the evolving relationship between Kratos and his son, and the monumental expectations surrounding the follow-up to Ragnarök.Highlander Reimagining Update: The long-awaited Highlander reboot/reimagining, starring Henry Cavill, has new details emerging. We cover the latest production updates, the creative direction being taken by director Chad Stahelski (of John Wick fame), and how the new film intends to honor the classic 1986 original while introducing the "Immortal" concept to a new generation. There can be only one—but what will this new iteration look like? And MUCH MORE! We'll cover a rapid-fire rundown of other significant news, including:Updates on the next season of popular streaming shows.New trailers and release dates for major motion pictures.Key announcements from the world of comic books, graphic novels & special guests.Stay tuned for a full-spectrum analysis of everything happening in pop culture, sci-fi, fantasy, and geekdom!#marvel #marvelstudios #wonderman #starfleetacademy #mcu #startrek

January 23rd: Shawna Nelson Kills (2007) Affairs are messy and, as we've heard time and time again, can be deadly. Dan takes us to downtown Dallas, across from Union Station, to an old hotel that's changed names so many times it's like it keeps trying to hide from its past. Room 1009 doesn't seem to care what the hotel is called, though. Stories of encounters with its ghosts remain unchanged. The room allegedly has a long, sordid history of murders and suspicious deaths tied to it. Then we explore the lore of the elegant Adolphous Hotel. It's been collecting tragedy since the first month it opened. On the nineteenth floor, guests still report hearing a woman sobbing like her heart is breaking in real time. Lynze starts off with a possible Grim Reaper sighting on the night of a confirmed death. Then, we head to Key West AKA Bone Island, for a ghost tour with an actual ghost. Lastly, on a long drive home after a long week of work, a man encounters someone who seems to have wandered out of their final resting place. Courthouses are full of tension—families on edge, lives in limbo, futures decided in fluorescent-lit rooms. But on one afternoon in Washington, D.C., something else showed up that had nothing to do with judges, lawyers, or legal papers. A 12-year-old girl sits in a waiting area, dressed in purple, next to a stranger who's struggling just to breathe. Behind them: a wall of glass, metal detectors, and bored security guards. It's the least “haunted” place you could imagine. Until something on the other side of that glass demands their attention. Three deliberate knocks. What happens when you're the only one who sees the figure in black? The only one who hears the sound that changes everything in the space of a breath? And why, decades later, can she still remember the color of the clothes, the feel of the air, and the way everyone stared at her like she was the problem? #ghoststory #paranormal #WashingtonDC #courthouseghost #truehaunting #realghoststories #grimreaper #supernatural #hauntedDC #creepyencounter #spiritvisitor #RealGhostStoriesOnline Love real ghost stories? Hello Witches In today's episode we journey through December folklore, peeling back the Christian veils to reveal the older stranger magic beneath. This episode begins with with St Lucy's Day. Beneath the saint lies lore entwined with Lilith, Lucifer, witches, trolls and wandering spirits — revealing how this 'festival of light' once belonged to the darkest nights of the year. From there, we descend into the symbolism of the sickle — a tool of harvest, severing and fate. We explore its mythic lineage through Morana, Mokosh, Cronus, Saturn, the Grim Reaper and the Druidic priesthood. You will hear about the magical uses of sickles across Europe, their protective and banishing powers and how you might weave this ancient blade into your own witchcraft practice today. We close with a look at Mothers' Night (Modranicht) — the Anglo-Saxon celebration honouring ancestral mothers, protective spirits and the deep feminine that presides over midwinter. Also includes some simple, meaningful ways to honour this sacred night in your personal craft. Bathroom dares, mirrors, candles, and a name spoken three times — for most of us it was a middle-school scare tactic. For him, it was just that… until it wasn't. Growing up in Minnesota, he saw friends do the classic “Bloody Mary” challenge and never once saw anything appear. His dad even banned the screaming-in-the-bathroom stuff, calling it fake. Years later in California, though, a friend from Mexico — a totally sober, devout guy with a Virgin Mary on his rearview mirror — tried something different: calling on Santa Muerte in front of a mirror with a black candle. This time he ran out of the house and never came back. What he said he saw wasn't a party trick. He described a female, Grim-Reaper-like figure — more like a dark Virgin than a slumber party ghost. And that lined up with what his grandmother had warned him about. That wasn't kid legend. That was folk religion. From there, the episode drifts into all the ways belief, language, and culture shape what shows up: Bloody Mary in one place, La Santa Muerte in another, Black-Eyed Kids in another. Then we hear from a listener in a 200-year-old farmhouse where a former owner, “Mary,” keeps visiting generations of the same family — proving that sometimes, the dead don't haunt a house… they haunt a bloodline. #RealGhostStoriesOnline #SantaMuerte #MirrorRitual #BloodyMaryLegend #ParanormalPodcast #LatinoFolkMagic #HauntedHouse #GhostEncounters #SupernaturalStories #TrueParanormal Love real ghost stories? We begin with the unsettling accounts of a psychiatrist whose faith is tested by cases of possession, patients climbing walls with unnatural strength, resisting sedatives, and channeling violent entities. Even if you don't know what “AI slop” is, there's a good chance you've encountered it basically everywhere you spend time online. Maybe it was those Facebook photos of an LA firefighter rescuing a baby and a bear cub during the wildfires earlier this year. Or it's in emails from your MAGA aunt with an inspirational story she found online about a group of bikers with a suspicious number of fingers visiting a World War Two veteran in the hospital. Or it's the President of the United States sharing AI-generated videos depicting the head of the Office of Management and Budget as the Grim Reaper or putting sombreros on House Minority Speaker Hakeem Jeffries. And with the latest version of OpenAI's Sora app, it's only going to get harder to know what's fake — which is bad, because AI imagery is becoming inescapable in our social media feeds and our politics. So to talk more about what AI slop is, why it's so profitable, and why we won't be rid of it anytime soon, we spoke with Jason Koebler. He's the co-founder of 404 Media, a tech-focused independent media outlet. And in headlines, President Donald Trump sends California's National Guard to Portland after a federal judge blocks him from sending Oregon's troops, delegations from Israel, Hamas and the U.S. are in Egypt to discuss a peace plan, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announces yet another strike on a suspected drug-smuggling boat off the coast of Venezuela.Show Notes:Check out 404 Media's coverage of "AI slop": https://www.404media.co/tag/ai-slop/Call Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
