Katalin Schäfer is a Hungarian dancer, choreographer, teacher, costume designer, and psychology student whose work bridges Middle Eastern dance, modern fusion, somatic movement, and self-awareness practices. With more than 20 years of international teaching, performing, and judging experience, she is the creator of the NEUture Dance method, a neuroaffirmative approach that integrates movement, body awareness, creativity, and nervous system regulation. Katalin is the director of GoldenScarf Arabic Folklore Dance Theater, founder of numerous artistic and retreat projects, and an award-winning performer whose career has taken her to festivals and events across Europe, North America, and Asia. “If your opening position is: your views are beyond the pale, you are deplorable, there is no space for you in democracy — then how on earth do we expect anything other than revolutionary conservatism as a response?” — Maciej Kisilowski For Americans concerned about the fragility of their democracy, Poland offers some reassuring news. Having experienced its own illiberal blip, democracy in Poland now seems amongst the healthiest in Eastern Europe. So what does a democracy only created in 1989 teach America as the old republic braces for its surreal semiquincentennial celebration? The Vienna-based constitutional scholar Maciej Kisilowski is the author of Let's Agree on Poland: A Case Study in Strategic Constitutional Design. In this bestselling 2025 book, Kisilowski argues that Poland is a map of where other Western democracies could go. If they choose to. Poland elected its first illiberal conservative government in 2005. Hungary followed in 2010. Both explicitly served as models for Donald Trump — relatively tamed in his first term, unshackled in his second. Like the United States, Poland is a relatively rich country with per capita GDP growing an astonishing 650% in a single generation. So, Kisilowski argues, the conventional argument that Poland embraced illiberalism in response to economic hardship is mostly wrong. Instead, what triggered illiberalism in Poland was culture, particularly the compressed, accelerated challenge to traditional identity — national, male, religious — that EU accession triggered in Central Europe. Kisilowski, who teaches at Central European University, might have entitled his book Let's Agree to Disagree. Poland's solution to this cultural crisis of identity is what Kisilowski calls “subsidiarity” — genuine decentralisation that allows both conservative communities to remain traditional and liberal cities to become progressive, all within a common democratic framework. He warns both the left and the right that if you tell people their views are somehow foreign, it's entirely rational for them to want to smash their “foreign” democracy. This is the Polish model of a viable 21st century democracy. Ironically, it's a Madisonian warning about the dangers of faction. The “deplorable” gambit always backfires. Péter Magyar's remarkable victory in Hungary — a staunch conservative ending Orbán's 16-year mafia-style illiberal chapter — offers the Hungarian model of Kisilowski's argument. So this July 4, worried Americans might read Let's Agree on Poland. Or reread James Madison. Five Takeaways • Central Europe as the Leading Indicator: Poland and Hungary Before Trump: Poland elected its first revolutionary conservative government in 2005 — sixteen years before the January 6 insurrection. Hungary followed in 2010. Both were explicitly cited as models by the architects of Trump's political project. Kisilowski's argument: what happened in Central Europe is not a regional anomaly but a leading indicator of what happens when open society's challenge to traditional identity is concentrated and rapid rather than gradual. The walls of liberal democratic institutions were weaker in Warsaw and Budapest. They will not hold indefinitely in Washington or London either. • It's Not the Economy, Stupid: The Case Against Materialist Explanations: Poland and Hungary are economic opposites. Hungary was the “happiest barrack” of the Soviet bloc but fared poorly after 1989. Poland was among the poorer countries of the bloc and grew 650% in per capita GDP in one generation, with a Gini coefficient below France's. Same revolutionary conservative politics. Opposite economic trajectories. Kisilowski's conclusion: the materialist explanation — people turn right because of economic hardship — is flatly wrong. The driver is identity: the compressed, accelerated challenge to national, male, and religious identity imposed by EU accession conditionality in a decade. • The Deplorable Problem: Why Exclusion Rationally Produces Authoritarianism: Kisilowski's most politically pointed argument: if your opening position to conservatives is that their views are beyond the pale, they are deplorable, there is no space for them in democracy — then it is entirely rational for them to break democracy. Not irrational. Not manipulated. Rational. If there is no space for me inside the system, I must break the system. That is what revolutionary conservatism is: a rational response to liberal exclusion. The solution is not to validate the views. The solution is to demonstrate that there is a place for those people and their communities within a democratic framework. That is the Madisonian insight. • Subsidiarity as the Solution: Conservative Communities, Liberal Cities, Common Framework: Kisilowski's constitutional proposal, worked out with co-authors from the full ideological spectrum, is subsidiarity: genuine decentralization that allows conservative rural communities to be conservative and liberal cities to be liberal, within a common democratic framework. Budapest, in Magyar's Hungary, should get strong autonomy to pursue the more liberal policies its electorate wants. Warsaw and Kraków should be able to differ. The European Union is, in this reading, the model: different countries, different cultures, one framework. The alternative is winner-takes-all, which always produces a revolutionary reaction from the losers. • Peter Magyar and Hungary: Proof of Concept for the Compromise Strategy: Magyar's extraordinary victory in Hungary — winning a constitutional majority against a 16-year right-wing regime rightly called a mafia state, in elections skewed heavily toward the government — is, in Kisilowski's reading, direct evidence that the compromise strategy works. Magyar is a staunch conservative and former member of the Orbán government. He won because he demonstrated to far-right voters that there was a place for them and their views within democratic Europe. The 2 million liberal Budapest voters who voted for him did so not because they like his conservatism but because he was unquestionably preferable to Orbán. Kisilowski made sure Magyar got the book. Challenging Archives is a new series of podcasts jointly organized between Review of Democracy and Blinken Open Society Archives, based in Budapest. We will invite scholars to discuss about their investigation in this archive. The Blinken Open Society Archives (OSA), is a complex archival institution. On one hand, it is a repository of vast collections that document how power operated across the twentieth century. OSA holds 10,000 linear meters of archival material, 17,000 hours of audiovisual recordings, and 15 TB of digital records, as well as 150,000 photographs, 6000+ documentary film titles and 22,000 library items. Their catalogue is available online.OSA is not only an archive. It is one of Europe's leading research centers on the history of the Cold War, state socialism, human rights, and surveillance. The OSA Archivum also provides fellowships for promising researchers that want to investigate the archival funds. Particularly the Visegrad Fellowship supports scholars, engaged artists, journalists, scholars at risk who want to work directly with these materials. Since its start in 2010, the Visegrad Scholarship has been awarded to more than 290 fellows from over 65 countries.In our series, we will invite the Visegrad Fellows to share us their experience with working with this fascinating archive.In our first episode, we discuss about Hungarian-language theater in socialist Romania with Eszter Szabó-Reznek. Her case offers a unique perspective into how ideology, culture, and bureaucracy intertwined.Eszter Szabó-Reznek is currently an Associate Lecturer at the University of Bucharest. She was a New Europe College Fellow in Bucharest. Her area of expertise is the social and economic history of cultural institutions, with a particular focus on Hungarian and Romanian theater.

Szabó's oeuvre. Translating her chiselled and daunting poetic voice has been a profoundly moving and humbling experience. Due to the increasingly strict dictatorship in Romania in the eighties, where Anna was part of the oppressed Hungarian minority, she moved to Hungary with her family at the age of fifteen. She started as one of the late intellectual successors of the legendary short-lived literary magazine, New Moon (1946–1948), and seems to agree with one of the authors in its circle, Géza Ottlik, who said: ‘Existence is my profession.' Anna presents experiences as if they are empirical observations. Her poems are often anchored in pain and suffering, both physical and emotional, revealing her awareness and responsiveness to the emotions of others. Her writings seem to encompass extreme psychic states. ‘Disgust' is a case study in what I will call ‘empirical observation of everyday horrors'. It charts the mental state of being lost in the world, hitting against the edges of existence. Disgust is distrust: it is losing the essential sense of security. ‘The Lake' echoes a feeling that was named in the short story, ‘The Imp of the Perverse', by Edgar Allan Poe: a compulsion to commit an act against one's own interests. In ‘Crossing, out' Anna tries to describe death. She was asked to write an elegy for someone she hadn't seen in over thirty years. The poem deals with the feeling of worldly alienation in which someone is thrown into an abyss: a place without language or direction, where everything earthly is negated, including logic and duality.

Leaders from some of the world's most powerful nations are gathering today in France for the G7. This year's summit comes just after the US and Iran say they have struck a tentative deal to end hostilities and open the Strait of Hormuz. The text of the deal has not yet been made public and both sides have offered conflicting accounts of what will follow a signing ceremony on Friday. To add to the uncertainty, the agreement does not resolve perhaps the most important long term issue: Iran's nuclear program and its existing highly enriched uranium. In April 2026, the world was shocked by when Péter Magyar handily defeated long-time Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán. In this episode, LCHP Assistant Director Rose Campbell speaks with legal scholar Kim Lane Scheppele about this unexpected upset after sixteen years of Orbán's autocratic regime, and what it reveals about the rise and fall of modern authoritarian regimes. Drawing on decades of research in Hungary and Eastern Europe, Scheppele explains how leaders such as Orbán, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump, among others, have used legal and constitutional mechanisms to consolidate power, weaken democratic institutions, and entrench their rule while maintaining a façade of legality. Orbán's tactics have been widely used by aspiring autocrats around the world, and his defeat throws the political future of these regimes into uncertainty.The conversation explores how corruption, economic stagnation, independent media, and grassroots organizing ultimately contributed to Orbán's downfall and the rise of Péter Magyar, whose campaign successfully united opposition forces and mobilized voters across Hungary. While not a progressive himself, Magyar's policies nevertheless are more centrist than Orbán's more hardline right-wing policies. Winning the election, however, is just the beginning. As Scheppele argues, elections can remove autocrats from office seemingly against all odds, but rebuilding democratic institutions can be a years-long challenge. Kim Lane Scheppele is the Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Sociology and International Affairs in the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University. She is also a faculty fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She studies the sociology of law and specializes in ethnographic and archival research on courts and public institutions. She has published over thirty articles (find them here) and her book, Legal Secrets, won Special Recognition in the Distinguished Scholarly Publication competition of the American Sociological Association as well as the Corwin Prize of the American Political Science Association.
Harry Warden is here to see you! My Bloody Valentine (1981) My Bloody Valentine turns 45 years old this year. The director, George Mihalka, was the guest of honor at this year’s Portland Horror Film Festival. He was kind enough to speak with the Scariest Things, who are huge fans of the film. Lost cutting room footage was recently found when the producer was absorbed by Lionsgate, allowing some of the missing gory effects to be brought back into the movie. So, it’s time to revisit this movie and talk to the creator about why it remains important today. In my nine years of managing the Scariest Things, I have been honored to meet some of the best people in the horror movie industry. Mick Garris, David Dastmalchian, Darren Lyn Bousman, Ben Leonberg, Aaron Moorhead, Carter Smith, and Ted Geoghegan are all people whom I would consider friends of the Scariest Things, having met and interviewed them. But, after meeting George Mihalka, director of My Bloody Valentine (1981), I can firmly say that he is my favorite person in the genre. Talking with George felt like story time. He was warm and generous, and was eager to tell us all about how he did his movie. George is an outlier, as far as horror directors go. He produced a singular, momentous horror film and then had a long directorial career outside of the genre. His experiences with Jack Valenti and the MPAA, who censored his film, were a “death by a thousand cuts” quite literally. It may have scared him off from continuing as a horror specialist, even though he had the gift. Sadly, some of the most creative kills in the movie got edited to the point of bloodlessness. He likes to say that it became “My Anemic Valentine”. And that, “There is more blood in the title than there is in the movie.” Frame-by-frame slicing and dicing. The film became the fall-guy film for the industry as a reaction to random violence following John Lennon’s assassination. Somebody would have to be made an example of, and in this case, it was Mihalka and My Bloody Valentine. The Legacy of My Bloody Valentine Despite all the censorship, it still found an audience. And we can celebrate it 45 years later. It is a testament to the story, the amazing sets, and better-than-average performances that, despite having the most exciting parts of the movie excised, the film became iconic. It is the trope foundation for so many slasher films to come. I Know What You Did Last Summer comes to mind. Scream, with its multiple killer options, also owes a debt to this film. And those are just the big ones. Simply put, My Bloody Valentine is foundational horror. For me, it ranks only behind 1978’s Halloween for slasher movies of that era. You can see the family tree: Black Christmas, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, My Bloody Valentine, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Cold Prey, Heart Eyes. Silent human killers bent on revenge, in full costume, butchering their way through lots of pretty young adults. This is the model, and it works well when executed with focus and craft. My Bloody Valentine helped build the trope platform that so many slasher films have utilized. They may be cliches now, but along with Friday the 13th, The Burning, and Halloween, MBV established these themes: Masked killer (essential) The Hidden Villain Switcheroo Splitting up the group (OK, this one is as old as horror films have been around, but slashers really take advantage of this trope.) Sneaking off to have sex in the next room is really dangerous. Never leave a romantic interlude to get booze. Let’s go exploring a really dangerous place for the fun of it. A panicking mayor. The young people don’t listen to the cops. The cops don’t tell the people what they need to know. The mad prophet. (Happy, in this movie) The body in a cooler. (A nod to Rabid?) Childhood trauma made the killer. Remember. This is an early slasher film. MBV does all of these tropes better than most. Mihalka wanted to do Deer Hunter, slasher style. He knew what he was getting into and willingly admitted that this was a movie meant to be fun and make money. It wasn’t going to be an Oscar contender. But he took the ideas of The Deer Hunter and the disaffected blue-collar workers and crafted a story that, despite its drive-in bona fides, was as much about the community as it was about the killer. The film used a real mine in a wind-swept working-class Sydney, Nova Scotia. It has a simple, plausible story. And now that the film has recovered some of its cutting-room components, restored to a 4K Blu-ray Collector’s edition, it can be appreciated for the gory creativity that fans were denied in 1981. About George Mihalka George was a Hungarian immigrant to Canada, initially unable to speak English or French. He initially found it difficult to integrate into Canadian culture, but would eventually become a highly prolific director in both English- and French-language films. He has amassed over fifty credits. This includes long runs on Canadian TV shows: Crossbow, Scoop, Undressed, and 24-Hour Rental. However, he will always be known for My Bloody Valentine. You can find several of his interviews online, talking about this movie. (But of course, you found this one first, right?) Mihalka appears to be comfortable with his legacy. He’s had plenty of time to see his film first get threatened with an X-rating, then achieve moderate box-office success, receive a sequel, and become the moniker of a hugely influential post-punk shoegaze band. George genuinely seemed to glow at how much the fans appreciated his work all these years later. He isn’t a stranger to the festival and podcast interview circuit. His easygoing demeanor, combined with his wisdom and eagerness to share stories about the craft of filmmaking, makes for story time with Uncle George. This is why I love doing what I do. When you meet your heroes and they turn out to be wonderful people, it confirms that pursuing this hobby as a small-press horror blogger rewards the grind. Hungary is undergoing a major transformation with the election of a new prime minister.After 16 years in power, Viktor Orban's Fidesz party was swept from office in a historic landslide election in April and with an equally historic turnout of almost 80 percent.The new Tisza party, led by Peter Magyar, won the largest super-majority in Hungary's post-communist history with a platform focused on anti-corruption and national renewal. They've promised major changes to Hungary's constitution, known as the Fundamental Law.So what does this election mean for Hungary and how might the new leadership reorient its relationship with America, the European Union, Russia, and China?Orban was known for his pro-family and pro-tradition domestic policies, while at the same time cultivating close ties with Russia and communist China and distancing himself from the EU.Joining us today to break all this down is Hungarian constitutional law scholar Marton Sulyok, a visiting researcher at the Georgetown Center for the Constitution.Sulyok is, notably, also the son of Hungary's current President, Tamas Sulyok.Magyar has demanded the resignation of Sulyok and other Orban allies.
