We talk a lot about fair prices. But what if we told you the price tag on your food is lying to you?In this episode of What The Field?!, we dive into true cost accounting — what it is, why it matters, and how it can change the way we think about food. Our guest Pietro Galliani from True Price and the Impact Institute breaks down the invisible costs behind what we eat: environmental damage, underpaid farmers, and social inequalities that never make it onto the label. We also explore how businesses and consumers can start closing the “true price gap” — without waiting for someone else to fix the system. Because change doesn't start in boardrooms. It starts at the checkout.

A new report from the UBS Sustainability and Impact Institute explores whether key climate technologies are breaking through at the scale and pace required to address the climate crisis. William Nicolle, the author of the report, explains that despite climate tech's vast potential for emissions reduction, there remains a tricky road ahead as most of these technologies are economically uncompetitive or as yet too immature to easily scale. We'll hear how processes might be improved to better understand complex dependencies, and also to better inform strategic policy, investment and organisational decisions. #203 Counting More Than Cash: Can CFOs Handle Human Value? with Arjan Udding and Werner Schouten https://open.spotify.com/episode/4XDwgSdG36iRyx8uhedCK4 In this episode of the GrowCFO Show, host Kevin Appleby engages in a thought-provoking discussion with Arjan Udding, Director Impact Institute, and Werner Schouten, Director Impact Economy Foundation. The conversation centres around the evolving role of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in the realm of sustainability. The guests make a compelling case for the CFO to transition into a Chief Value Officer (CVO) role, emphasizing the need to balance the traditional focus on financial value with equal consideration for social, human, and natural value creation. They delve into the importance of impact accounting, a methodology that quantifies non-financial value and integrates it with financial metrics. Arjan and Werner share examples of European institutions, such as Rabobank and Triodos, that have successfully adopted impact accounting to inform their decision-making and long-term investment strategies. Throughout the discussion, the speakers highlight the need for a harmonized, accessible language for impact reporting. This, they argue, is crucial for driving sustainable business practices and investment decisions across organizations of all sizes, as it enables a comprehensive understanding of the interconnected environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors that shape a company's long-term viability and societal impact. Key topics covered include: Introduction and background of the guests, Arjan and Werner Debate on whether the finance leader should be called a CFO or CVO Role of financial metrics in sustainability and the need to expand them Integration of financial and non-financial metrics through impact accounting Examples of companies adopting impact accounting Challenges and opportunities in implementing impact accounting The broader impact of impact accounting beyond just ESG Conclusion and call to action for CFOs to embrace the role of Chief Value Officer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maxJKO35A7s Links Arjan Udding on LinkedIn Werner Schouten on LinkedIn Kevin Appleby on LinkedIn GrowCFO Mentoring Timestamps 0:0:00 - 0:0:19 Introduction and background of the guests 0:0:19 - 0:1:35 Debate on whether the finance leader should be called a CFO or CVO 0:1:35 - 0:3:15 The need to redefine value beyond financial value 0:3:15 - 0:6:00 Expanding financial tools to include social and environmental value 0:6:00 - 0:7:30 The CFO's role in owning the balanced scorecard 0:7:30 - 0:12:30 Integrating financial and non-financial metrics through impact accounting 0:12:30 - 0:16:00 Examples of companies adopting impact accounting 0:16:00 - 0:20:00 Challenges and opportunities in implementing impact accounting 0:20:00 - 0:22:30 The broader impact of impact accounting beyond just ESG 0:22:30 - 0:24:00 Conclusion and call to action for CFOs to embrace the role of Chief Value Officer Find out more about GrowCFO If you enjoyed this podcast, you can subscribe to the GrowCFO Show with your favorite podcast app. The GrowCFO show is listed in the Apple podcast directory, Spotify and many others. Today's agrifood industry produces enough calories to feed the global population but it creates negative externalities across the climate, nature and health sectors. Global sustainability goals have changed what crops the agrifood industry grows and how. Such dynamics leave the sector structurally unprepared to deliver on these goals. However, deploying mature, high-impact investable solutions in the short term that strengthen innovation could be a boon to the industry. The UBS Sustainability and Impact Institute report analyses promising solutions and outlines the role of capital markets and investors in facilitating their development and deployment. We discuss this with William Nicolle, ESG analyst in the UBS Sustainability and Impact Institute.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In partnership with the Apparel Impact Institute, Philip Berman takes an in-depth look at its new The Climate Solutions Portfolio which aims to find, feature and fund any initiative with the potential to reduce energy use and/or greenhouse gas emissions at scale in the industry. And it has up to 250,000 dollars per year to award to projects that have the data to show they have the potential to make a big impact. In this first episode, Philip Berman was joined by Kurt Kipka, the Apparel Impact Institute's Chief Impact Officer, and Linda Greer, who sits on the Institute's advisory panel and is one of the experts assessing the grant applications. They talked about, why the Institute believe their new approach is needed, why there is no online registry of proven solutions, and what the Institute is doing about it, how the grants are being funded, and previous winners. In episode 2, which is released on 29 February, there will be lots of tips on how to apply and what their team is looking for. Applications open from 1 to 31 March, 2024. If you want to find out more about the Portolio check out its dedicated site where you can also contact their team if you need help with your application.

Fashion makes us feel elegant and affluent, creating unique looks that allow people living in crowded societies to set themselves apart with unique styles. But fashion also comes at a substantial environmental cost. According to many estimates, 10% of the world's carbon emissions and 20% of wastewater are generated by making, shipping, and selling clothing, much of which ends up in landfills long before the clothing's usefulness is exhausted. Meet Kurt Kipka, Chief Impact Officer at the Apparel Impact Institute. This nonprofit is working to reduce the apparel industry's negative environmental and social consequences. The Apparel Impact Institute created a methodology called Clean by Design that helps textiles and clothing manufacturers identify issues, get funding to trial new strategies, and propagate solutions across the industry. The organization emphasizes the importance of objectively measurable progress toward using less energy, water, and chemicals and reducing waste in the manufacturing process. The American Chemical Society, funded by the plastic industry responsible for the rise of the materials that enable fast fashion, claims the volume of fashion production will grow by 300% before 2050, which is unsustainable. Our society might be buried in its clothing waste. Kurt outlines the path to a more sustainable fashion industry, including using natural and recycled fiber, decarbonizing production, and shorter supply chains built around local clothing hubs that sell, resell, repair, and recycle clothing. Today's fast fashion item that costs $10 and is worn three times before being discarded could become a durable piece of clothing that is sold, resold, loaned, and traded in many times, with the fashion label earning revenue at each turn as the facilitator of the experience of shopping for quality, long-lasting clothing.

Moreover, given the proliferation of definitions, Tjeerd articulates what sustainability means to an institution like ABN Amro.
