Brian K. Reaves is the EVP and Chief Belonging, Equity, and Impact Officer of UKG, where he leads the company's global belonging, equity, and impact program, expanding existing initiatives while working to strengthen a culture built on trust, fairness, and equality, so every U Krewer can thrive in every stage of their career.  In this episode of the Allyship in Action podcast, we dive deep into the power of employee resource groups (ERGs) and how they're not just a "nice to have," but a "must-have" for any company serious about thriving. Brian's work at UKG shows us the power of inclusion work and ERGs on business impact. Here are the key takeaways from our conversation: The Superpower of Unique Experiences: Brian emphasized that everyone's unique lived experience is a superpower. ERGs are spaces where these superpowers can be shared, celebrated, and leveraged for innovation and growth. It's like having a room full of superheroes with different powers, but they all work together to save the day!   Intergenerational Collaboration is Key: The "RISE" ERG at UKG highlights the importance of intergenerational collaboration. It's about breaking down the silos and creating spaces where different generations can learn from each other. Like Brian said, it's about being the "cool mom" or "cool dad" by understanding and connecting with the younger generation.   ERGs Drive Business Impact: Brian shared compelling data from Great Place to Work and UKG's own research that shows ERGs drive higher engagement, retention, and innovation. They're not just feel-good initiatives; they're smart business strategies.   Allyship Through Understanding: Brian advocates for joining ERGs that are outside one's immediate experience to foster understanding and allyship. It's about stepping outside your comfort zone and learning from others' perspectives. As he put it, "The power will come when you join the one you have least affinity to." ERGs as Proxies for Customer Base: Employee resource groups can act as a direct line to your customer base. They can provide honest feedback and insights into accessibility and market demographics that might otherwise be missed. Actionable Allyship Takeaway: If you're a leader, take the leap and become an executive sponsor for an ERG. And if you're an employee, consider joining an ERG that stretches you beyond your comfort zone. You'll be amazed at what you learn and how much you grow. Insightful Quotes: "That uniqueness is our superpower." "The power will come when you join the one you have least affinity to." "It's about creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued – like finding your tribe in the middle of a corporate jungle." "We can't live everyone's life, but we certainly can have empathy and listen to someone else." "These people will tell you the truth. And if you include them in the story, they'll continue to be more engaged." You can find the UKG ERG Playbook that Brian referenced online here, and you can find Julie Kratz at https://www.nextpivotpoint.com/

She engages deeply with the investor community and provides strategic updates to the Board and C-Suite. Mary Jane's accomplishments have been featured in many publications including Forbes, Greenbiz and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. She is an in-demand public speaker with global media experience. Committed to lending her expertise and leadership to support related professional and community organizations, she currently serves on the Executive Committee of The Conference Board's Sustainability Council, WRI's Corporate Consultative Group, and the Board of the St. Paul and Minnesota Foundation. Mary Jane Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: General Mills' key sustainability initiatives: Reducing GHG emissions, advancing regenerative agriculture, and recyclable/reusable packaging Strategies to engage with farmers to adopt regenerative agriculture  Getting leadership buy in for SBTI goals The importance of partnerships with key stakeholders and peer companies Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Mary Jane's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers?  Give yourself a little grace and space. This work, it's not a quarter, it's not a year, it's many years. You need to be prepared for the marathon, not the sprint. The days can be really hard, but they can be really rewarding. So grace and space for yourself is really important.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability?  I am most excited about the promising outcomes that regenerative agriculture is driving for the planet, for farm ecosystems, for communities, and for farmers, and what it's doing for nature. When I stand on a regenerative farm and I see these bugs and birds and so much life, it's really cup filling.  What is one book you'd recommend sustainability professionals read?  This is going to sound like a strange answer, but I would say The Alchemist, because there's something in there about the sustainability of the human soul that is really beautiful and worth reading.  What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work?  My favorite Go-to resources would be the Corporate Eco Forum. They have a plethora of research and information and latest emerging ESG rules and regulations, and also have created a really closely connected group of chief sustainability officers and sustainability professionals that I just have found invaluable in the time I've been in this role.  Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at General Mills?  For General Mills, they can visit www.generalmills.com, that's our company website. There you can also see a global impact and sustainability page that will take you to the great work that the company's doing in regenerative ag, our sustainability report, our governance structure. For me, you can check me out on LinkedIn, Mary Jane Melendez.

This episode is very very special to me. It is a tribute to my sister, Darcy Richie, who passed away at the age of 40 in 2021. Darcy Richie was the Chief Program and Impact Officer at Generation Citizen.  Last Spring, I invited her to join me to talk about two of her many superpowers: the how and why of communication and team-building.I called Darcy the communication whisperer.  She was one of those people who can be in any situation, with any group of people, and find her way to the heart of what they are trying to communicate. She had a unique way of making people feel truly seen and heard - which is really what communication is all about. Most critically for her work, she was able to help others do that for one another.Darcy spent her career building and sustaining high-impact teams, starting when she was the founding principal of a charter school at the age of 25. She built and managed national teams, and remote teams; Small intimate teams and sprawling layered teams…  At the root of it, she was simply excellent at communicating, and at helping build the capacity of those around her to do so effectively as well.

Interview begins @ 6:02 In this episode of The Sacred Speak podcast, we explore the potential of the Christian church as a sanctuary for psychedelic healing. Our guests, Hunt and Jessica, seek to reconnect the worlds of psychedelics and organized religion, addressing the misinformation that has driven them apart for the past 50 years. They assert that the church must prioritize healing and work to rectify the damage caused by this disconnect. Throughout our discussion, we delve into the concept of the church as a nurturing environment for fostering profound experiences, self-love, and personal growth through the exploration of one's relationship with their body and the importance of firsthand experiences. We also lay the groundwork for defining a "psychedelic Christian" and how this integration could lead to a more comprehensive understanding of how a divine encounter can be paired with the Christian faith. Recurring themes in this conversation include social justice within the psychedelic movement, the democratization of psychedelics, the significance of mystical experiences, embracing one's true self within small community groups, the power of honesty and truth in community settings, the church's role in healing, and the experiences of people of color within psychedelic communities. Join us as we examine this thought-provoking and transformative topic. Bio: Hunt Priest is a priest in The Episcopal Church and the founding Executive Director of Ligare: A Christian Psychedelic Society, a non-profit network of Christian leaders educating themselves and those they lead about the intersection of open-hearted Christianity and the Psychedelic renaissance. A participant in a psilocybin study in early 2016, he had two life-changing mystical experiences under the care of a research team. His encounters with psilocybin opened him to the healing and consciousness-raising power of psychedelic medicines and changed the landscape of his work. Hunt believes the healing power of psychedelics should be in the toolkits of all who are healers of bodies, minds, and souls and can't wait to be part of providing access for legal, safe, and guided experiences in a Christian setting. In April 2021 Hunt took an extended break from full-time parish ministry to expand his priesthood out into the emerging psychedelic landscape. Jessica Felix Romero has over 16 years of experience in social justice advocacy, organizing, and communications. With a doctorate in conflict analysis and resolution, she integrates holistic system analysis and transformative design to help nonprofits advance social change. She is Vice President & Chief Strategy and Impact Officer at Sojourners, a faith-inspired nonprofit that works with Christians to put their faith into action in the passionate pursuit of social justice, peace, and environmental stewardship. Jessica loves all things about food and spirituality — her pioneering doctoral research in El Salvador documents the transformational possibilities of conflict-resolution oriented food systems that feed people and nurture peace. She is a student of somatic writing and practitioner of embodied leadership. Her current work explores the intersections of spirituality, ancestral wisdom, psychedelics, and Christianity. www.ligare.org www.sojo.net Website for The Sacred Speaks: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com WATCH: YouTube for The Sacred Speaks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOAuksnpfht1udHWUVEO7Rg Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ @thesacredspeaks Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesacredspeaks/ Brought to you by: https://www.thecenterforhas.com Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com

CWS Virtual Side Event (Zoom)  The Necessity of Inner Development for the Full Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)  February 7, 2023 1:15 - 2:30 PM EST CSocD 61 Priority Theme Creating full and productive employment and decent work for all as a way of overcoming inequalities to accelerate the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic & the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development   Event Concept Note At a point approximately halfway through the 15 year time period to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is critical that all actors strategize around full implementation and achievement of the 2030 Agenda. Leveraging highly effective partnerships and applying lessons learned from the first seven years of the SDGs are necessary, and community-level engagement and leadership will continue to be critical. The role of the individual, and their personal journey toward their sustainable development will also be a critical lens for program design and implementation over the second half, and throughout the final years leading up to 2030.   The interconnectivity of the goals is also inextricably linked to the complexities of each person and their own capacities, interests, goals and lived experience - to name a few. This session will look at the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) as a key means to help the world achieve the SDGs.    The IDGs (https://www.innerdevelopmentgoals.org/) concern each humans' 1) being; 2) thinking; 3) relating; 4) collaborating, and; 5) acting. These five areas of the individual will be the lynchpin to help sustainably shift toward sustainable interests, habits, efforts, and unleash creativity and innovation.  Panelists will discuss how program models and approaches have shifted since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda in 2015 and how the role of program participants - as individuals - has shifted, including their roles in program design, community leadership and their personal goal setting and action. This will take into consideration inequity in access to basic services and disproportionate consequences - especially for marginalized and displaced people. This will be explored through several perspectives of our speakers with different backgrounds.   Speakers   Maurice A. Bloem, Chief Sustainability and Impact Officer, Church World Service (moderator) Dr. Michael Trice, Director of the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Engagement, Spehar-Haliligan Associate Professor, Seattle University Ntombentsha “Portia” Tengani, RDP Project Manager, Church World Service Africa  Sophia Robele, Foresight Specialist Consultant, UNDP Wardah Khalid - Foreign Affairs Officer at the US Department of State, but during this event she (re)presented: Founder and Board President, Poligon Education Fund

Reimagining Climate Action and Achieving the SDGs: Our Individual and Collective Work   Side Event to UNGA 77 and Climate Week Panel and Reception Hosted by Church World Service (CWS) Monday, 19 September 2022 4 - 7 PM EDT Location: Church Center of the UN New York, NY   About   For fourteen years, Climate Week has “brought together the most influential leaders in climate action from business, government, and the climate community” at the same time as the UN General Assembly High-level meetings. Climate Week aims to increase ambition and accelerate action for urgent climate action, and the timing is more critical during UNGA this year as the world experiences more frequent and severe climate shocks affecting all people, but most disproportionately for the most vulnerable (eg. food insecure, impoverished, indigenous persons, women, smallholder farmers). Climate change is also promulgating unrest and forced displacement; there are more displaced persons around the world now than ever before in recorded human history.    Most people in low and middle income countries are people of faith, and the role of places and leaders of worship, communities and individual action will only continue to be critical to achieve the SDGs. As a faith-based civil society organization in consultative status with the UN, CWS is uniquely positioned to engage with delegates and high-level attendees of UNGA regarding critical matters around the world's progress - or lack thereof - toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.   This side event served as a follow-up to CWS' side event during the 2022 High Level Political Forum entitled Reimagining Our World and Future Together: an integral approach towards sustainable development. In a panel discussion between the Netherlands, UNDP, Seattle University, MPOWERD and CWS, speakers addressed systemic gaps and the value of improving social safety nets and partnerships (SDG 17) to ensure resilience - especially among the most vulnerable - and the achievement of the SDGs. Speakers were asked to consider the role of “Inner Development Goals” (IDGs), or the capabilities, qualities and skills within each person.    The event featured a panel discussion and interactive dialogue with the audience. We would like to thank the audience for their participation and apologize that this summary podcast doesn't do total justice to the richness of the conversations that took place during the session.   Panelists (Moderator) Maurice A. "(ESG tracking software) needs to be comprehensive. It needs to be accurate, you know, full proof. It needs to be integrated into other systems. It needs to be easy to use…. And I think, fifth, it's got to be providing you a road map for where to go" Suzanne DiBianca on Electric Ladies Podcast The need for solid systems to track “net zero” emissions and ESG initiatives – environment-social-governance – are more and more critical, especially now that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced their proposed climate risk disclosure rules.  There are lots of software systems being adapted to do this tracking, including Salesforce, which is known for their sales-focused software.  But what should we look for in a good software to track this stuff, some of which is intangible? Listen to Suzanne DiBianca of Salesforce explain it in this fascinating interview with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. (Electric Ladies was formerly known as Green Connections Radio.) You'll hear: What net zero really means, no matter what industry you're in. What to look for in good emissions-climate-ESG tracking software. How Salesforce developed theirs to help them track their own carbon footprint. Plus, insightful career advice. And much more! “More venture money has gone into climate tech than ever in history in the U.S. in particular, but all over the world. And there's great companies that are doing direct air capture, that are doing clean energy, that are doing renewables, that are….(doing) such amazing innovation….You can work for an amazing company like that as a marketing professional, as an HR professional, as a sales professional…(in all kinds of roles)… So, either, stay put where you are and look are places to make impact based on your skill set and what the company's committed to, or, there's all kinds of incredible entrepreneurs out there doing amazing things in the world. Find a passion area, whether it's workforce development or education or climate (or whatever) and go do it.“ Suzanne DiBianca on Electric Ladies podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. You'll also want to listen to (some of these are under the name Green Connections Radio): Janet Gail Besser, Smart Electric Power Alliance, on their 5-point plan to get to net zero in any industry Kristen Sullivan, Deloitte Sustainability Practice lead, on the transformation and ESG Jennifer Gerbi, Ph.D., Deputy Director and Acting Director, ARPA-E, the innovation arm of the Department of Energy  Michele Wucker, thought leaders and author of “You Are What You Risk: The New Art & Science to Navigating an Uncertain World.” Roberta Rincon, Society of Women Engineers, Director of Research, on the status and careers of women in various types of engineering roles.
