No one truly wants to see anyone physically hurt, injured for life or have death be the result of unnecessary actions that could have been prevented. Often if one is to scroll through social media, it almost feels as though "Common Sense" has gone out the window! Trends on TikTok or YouTube, for example, of jumping out of moving tractors while filming oneself doing so to jumping off of UTVs at the cabin, might get a few likes or be the latest #challenge - Just STOP. Please STOP.  The actor/actress doing the activities - We get it! You are wanting the attention, be thought of as crazy or pushing limits; hate to break it to you - You are not achieving it. Instead you are risking your own life to become an instant sensation that will only be forgotten as soon as the daring act you took was overlooked. Ouch! We know - Truth Hurts. The property owner of the machinery, UTV, or the land in which these acts are taking place - STOP THEM. Why? Because you are exposing yourself not just to the high risks of losing a loved one, if that's not scary enough in itself, but also opening yourself up to liability lawsuits as the actions did take place on your property, using your property, etc. Now that we have your attention, make a change this year and STOP feeding into the social media challenges and trends that really are only making someone else money at your expense.     EASY ST. Embrace the rich flavors of Irish tradition with just a few simple steps. To start, gather 4 cups of flour, 4 tablespoons of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ cup of softened margarine or butter. Combine these ingredients in a mixing bowl, creating the foundation of your bread. Next, enrich the mixture with 1 cup of buttermilk, 1 egg, and if desired, 1 cup of raisins for a delightful twist. Blend all ingredients thoroughly until a dough forms. Once mixed, gently knead the dough and shape it into a round loaf. Place it onto a baking sheet, ready to be transformed into a golden delight. Before baking, don't forget the signature mark of Irish Soda Bread - carefully cut an "X" across the top of the loaf. Then, brush it with 1 beaten egg white to achieve that perfect finish. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius), and let the magic unfold as you bake your creation for 45 to 50 minutes. Indulge in the aroma of freshly baked bread, and savor every bite of your homemade Irish Soda Bread. Hi Bakers, Don't you want to cut into a warm slightly sweet biscuit bread with a beautiful craggy top and tons of sweet dried fruit inside? Yes please, I say! I'll grab the butter and honey and we can dig in. I have no shame in saying I ate three pieces of bread during the taping of this episode because it was so darn good. This easy bake comes together quickly and you don't have to wait for the yeast to work since Irish Soda Bread uses baking soda and buttermilk to rise! Try this making this treat sometime soon and have it for breakfast, a midmorning snack, or anytime -Carolyn Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread Makes one 9” round loaf Dry 3 1/4 cups Cup4Cup Gluten-Free Multipurpose Flour 1 cup gluten-free oat flour* 1 teaspoon sweet rice flour 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 5 tablespoons butter, cold Wet 1 1/2 cups buttermilk 1/4 cup applesauce, unsweetened 1 large egg 1 cup currants or raisins, lightly dusted with flour Preheat oven to 375F and set the rack in the middle position. Grease a 9” cast iron pan or baking dish. In a large mixing bowl whisk together dry ingredients except for the butter. Next, cut in butter and set aside. In a small mixing bowl combine buttermilk, applesauce, and egg. Add wet ingredients to dry and mix until the dough just comes together. Stir in currants to evenly distribute them. Then, gather the dough into a ball and knead it on a floured counter a few times until you can shape it into a round loaf. Transfer the dough to the baking pan and score an “X” lightly into the top with a serrated knife. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the bread is done. Check the bread about 20 minutes into the bake for color and tent with foil if the bread is already browned. The bread is done when a cake tester inserted into the middle comes clean. Cool for 10 minutes and cut with a serrated knife. I like my Irish Soda Bread with butter and honey. Enjoy! * I make my own oat flour with gluten-free oats ground in a food processor or spice grinder. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carolyn-hillyer/message

The Multiple Heritages of Irish Soda Bread Presented by Lucy Long, PhD Soda bread, a quick bread using baking soda as the primary rising agent, is closely associated in the U.S. with Ireland. Its history and meanings, however, are much more complicated—and tasty—than the sweet loaf with raisins that is usually found around St Patrick's Day in March. This talk discusses the various forms this bread takes in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and the U.S., exploring how it represents different notions of Irish heritage in each of those countries. Recipes will be made available. Lucy M. Long directs the non-profit Center for Food and Culture (www.foodandculture.org) and teaches adjunct in American studies, ethnic studies, folklore, nutrition, and tourism at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. With a PhD in Folklore and Folklife (University of Pennsylvania), she has been involved in humanities-based research on food as a medium for creating meaning, identity, and community since the 1980s. The luck of the Irish, wasn't about their cuisine but rather the propensity for miners of Irish decent during the gold rush to strike it rich.  At House of Bread, we added our "lucky" ingredients to Irish Soda Bread to make one feel lucky to enjoy.   Traditional Irish Soda Bread is made with flour, baking soda, soured milk, and salt-that's edible but just doesn't taste very good.   At House of Bread, we took tradition and added, butter, buttermilk, raisins, caraway seeds for a full bounty of delicious flavor.    This recipe will yield two loaves. 2 ½ cups of white all purpose or pastry flour (can use gold whole wheat for Irish Brown Soda Bread) 3 Tablespoons of granulated sugar 1 tsp of baking soda 1 tsp of baking powder 1 tsp of salt 1 tsp of caraway seeds (optional) Measure out dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix them thoroughly together. ¼ cup of cold butter Cube butter into small pieces and cut into dry ingredients with fingertips until it resembles pea size crumbles. Add in raisins and mix together: 1/2 cup of golden raisins (may substitute regular raisins or currants) In large pitcher or use well method. 1 cup of buttermilk. Can not substitute milk, well you can but you have to add a T lemon juice. The acid found in buttermilk reacts to bases — most commonly baking soda — creating carbon dioxide gas.  2 eggs Whisk the egg/buttermilk together and then add in your dry ingredients. Using your hands, mix until flour holds together like a biscuit or scone dough, not a cookie dough. Cut dough into two equal parts.  Place on well sprayed cookie sheet and cut a cross shape on top. Egg wash the top, by scrambling one egg and brushing it on top. Bake for approximately 30-35 minutes at 350 degree oven. Happy Baking everyone!  If you wish to learn more about the scone method of baking that is used to make Irish Soda Bread, then here is a link to the muffin/scone baking class.  Baking Class – Quick Breads, Muffins and Scones – House of Bread    For more information about House of Bread, please visit www.houseofbread.com. Food and memories are tightly intertwined. It's often around holidays and celebrations that we can miss those family traditions the most. One of my favorite resources for recreating special dishes is from Jules Shepard aka GF Jules. Her recipes include traditional foods like King Cake, Beignets, Irish Soda Bread, Pierogi and Holiday Cookies to name a few. She has worked hard to perfect her recipes and has shared them all for us to enjoy. She provides substitutes to make most of her recipes dairy free as well. Flatbreads and quick breads may seem like strange oven-fellows, but hear us out. In the Venn Diagram of bread baking, they both fall in the overlap of “speed” and “differently leavened.” So we're firing up the tonir, the tandoor, the griddle, the bastible, the wok, and even a rock, to travel around the world through bread. We'll chat flatbreads with chef Mike Solomonov of Zahav, head baker Peiwen Lee of Hot Bread Kitchen, and author Kate Leahy of the forthcoming Lavash. Then, producer-at-large Conor O'Donovan will dive deep into Irish Soda Bread with Darina Allen of The Ballymaloe Cookery School and cookbook historian Dorothy Cashman. And, as always, we'll hear insights from co-authors of Modernist Bread Nathan Myhrvold and Francisco Migoya. Photo Credit: Nathan Myhrvold / The Cooking Lab, LLC. He even sings us a tune & in perfect pitch too! Cheers … to Your Ears!
