Dr James Steele is an Associate Professor in Sport and Exercise Science at Southampton Solent University (United Kingdom). James teaches across both exercise physiology, biomechanics, and research methods, is an active researcher and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles on a variety of areas relating to health and fitness. Listen to my previous episodes with Dr Steele here: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. Dr James Fisher is a Course Leader and Senior Lecturer in Sports Conditioning and Fitness at the Southampton Solent University in the UK. He is the lead author on 2 of the most important papers published in Evidence-Based Resistance Training. Listen to my previous episodes with Dr Fisher here: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. Early January 2018, I took a flight back to my homeland (UK) to visit the James's over at Southampton Solent University for the most gruelling workout ever, a meat feast and some very engaging and intellectual conversation. Here's the workout routine they put me through: MedX Knee Extension (1 timed-static-contraction maximum force output test following by 3 drop-sets to failure) Z-Bar Bicep Curls (3 drop-sets to failure - on the third set, I had to ask for a bin incase I puked ... ) Chin-up (Single-set-to-failure) Chest press (Single-set-to-failure) Dips (Single-set-to-failure) Chest press (Single-set-to-failure) MedX Lower Back (Single-set-to-failure) This episode is an in-person 3-way podcast. Unfortunately, I did not have any microphones and we ended up using VoiceRecorder (which is pretty decent) on my iPhone 7 to record the podcast. The sound quality is okay but it might be a little difficult to listen to if you're dealing with other noise. Next time I do an in-person interview, I'll bring microphones or and/or use a Zoom H6! In this episode, we discuss: The role of effort in resistance training Are multiple sets not-to-failure just as effective as single-sets-to-failure? How to motivate loved ones to exercise Workout frequency The value of supervision Nihilism vs training optimisation When is more more volume more effective? The value in resting between exercises This episode is brought to you by the Resistance Exercise Conference – The Science and Application of Strength Training for Health and Human Performance. You will learn from the top strength training researchers, connect with exercise professionals from all over the world, get a workout from an expert trainer and get inspired, rejuvenated and focused on your strength training business. Dr Doug McGuff (@DougMcGuff / Instagram: ultimate_exercise_) is frequently labeled as one of the world's top experts on exercise and in particular, high intensity strength training. Doug practices full-time emergency medicine with Blue Ridge Emergency Physicians and owns, Ultimate Exercise, where he and his instructors continue to explore the limits of exercise through their personal training of clients. Doug regularly posts his exercise thoughts and findings on his blog and YouTube channel, and provides consultancy and other products and services via DrMcGuff.com. Doug’s popularity exploded with the release of his ground-breaking book, Body By Science, which he published with John Little. Soon after, Dr McGuff and Dr Robert P. Murphy published The Primal Prescription: Surviving The “Sick Care” Sinkhole, an expose on medical care, how to get the best care when you really need it, and a prescription for wellness, longevity and personal accountability. This was an eclectic episode that touched on a number of different areas. As this may be the last interview I do with Doug for a while (he's incredibly busy), I took this opportunity to go beyond strength training to talk about things like investing, cryptocurrency, success and even relationships. Doug provides a very intelligent and thoughtful perspective on all of these topics and more. I look forward to listening to this interview again and again. I hope you will feel the same. This was one of the most profound conversations I've had in my entire life. In this episode, we discuss: Entrepreneurship Workout Volume and frequency The Placebo Effect Neck training (machine vs manual resistance) The practical application of scientific literature on exercise (and in general) Cryptocurrency What calorie surplus is required for optimising muscle gain? Jim Flanagan says that to tell a story, you must write it down. Before you tell it, you must have a point of reference, an outline, and then scratching a script. This is the beginning of using writing and storytelling with children in schools to teach the art of creating stories.

"The Ghost and the Rock" is our retelling of storyteller Jim Flanagan's retelling of a ghost story about Gettysburg. We met Jim at a PTO Convention in Valley Forge, and he allowed us to use this tale, called "The Shadow in the Back Yard", from his book "The School of Scary Stories". This little yarn, which takes place in the present, but involves a classic ghost story motif, makes an important point about respecting and preserving history. Bicycling through History And history was very much a part of our experience this week in Pennsylvania, as we (Dennis and Kimberly) took in about 80 miles of territory on our bikes while Zephyr was practicing and performing with his band in North Carolina. First, there was Valley Forge itself: we toured on bikes through the park where General George Washington's troops spent a miserable winter in 1777-78 defending the area from British invasion. Although Washington himself, and his wife Martha, were considerably more comfortable in the house that served as the army's headquarters, and which today is open to the public. Then we pedaled from the town of Plymouth into downtown Philadelphia and had our lunch by Independence Hall, where delegates spent a sweltering summer in 1776 hammering out the beginnings of the new nation. The Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution were all signed in this picturesque building that recently guest-starred in the movie "National Treasure". We also dropped in to visit the fabled Liberty Bell, just across the street. On to Lancaster, where we joined our first ever group bicycle tour for a quaint ride through the countryside, past many Amish farms. And then there was Gettysburg, the site of another important military operation in another landmark war, nearly a century after Valley Forge. And whereas the soldiers at Valley Forge had to deal with insufficient clothing in a bitterly cold winter, the soldiers at Gettysburg wore stifling wool uniforms in the middle of July. It was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, killing about 50,000 troops. No wonder there are so many ghost stories in the area. And with those wool uniforms, no wonder the ghosts are so restless! Happy Listening, Dennis ("dad" and "son") and Kimberly ("mom", "daughter" and "geologist") Goza
