When 16-year-old Olivia "Janie" Ward died after a fall at a teen party in the woods, her family began a decades long search to find out what really happened to her on that night. With conflicting autopsies, "misplaced" records, and eyewitness statements that create more questions than answers, Janie's death sadly remains as much a mystery today as it was 35 years ago. Paul Allen Smith Jr is the oldest of four children, was born on March 12, 1960, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He grew up in McMinnville, Tennessee, in the Cumberland Mountains, where his father's family had farmed for several generations and also operated an ornamental plant business. Smith calls himself a fourth-generation nurseryman and horticulturist. The family moved back to Little Rock when Smith was twelve due to a career opportunity for his father, who unexpectedly died just three months later. To cope with his grief, Smith planted a small garden in the backyard and began raising chickens. After graduating from Little Rock's McClellan High School in 1979, he attended Hendrix College in Conway to major in biology, with plans of becoming a veterinarian. After graduation in 1983, he earned a Rotary International scholarship to study ornamental horticulture, garden design, and history during an eighteen-month stay at the University of Manchester in England. After returning home to Little Rock, Smith entered the nursery and garden design business with his family. He also became a private tour guide to European gardens and began teaching gardening workshops at the nursery. Regular appearances on local radio led to a weekly gardening segment on Little Rock television station KATV's Daybreak show in 1989. It soon led to a syndicated program starting in 2000, P. Allen Smith's Gardens, which was largely shot at Smith's historic home in Little Rock's Quapaw Quarter. The original Garden Home is a 1904 Colonial Revival cottage surrounded by a series of garden rooms designed by Smith. He purchased the house for one dollar and relocated it to a 15,000-square-foot vacant lot. Smith divides his time between that home and his 650-acre Garden Home Retreat at Moss Mountain Farm in Roland, Arkansas, which overlooks the Arkansas River Valley. At Moss Mountain Farm, Smith promotes the local-food movement, organic gardening, and the preservation of heritage poultry breeds. Smith founded the Heritage Poultry Conservancy in 2009. Smith is a Certified Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society and a board member of the Royal Oak Foundation, the U.S. affiliate of the National Trust of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. His awards and recognitions include the 2009 Arkansas Cultural Enrichment Award from the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, the 2011 4-H Celebration of Excellence Award, the Medal of Honor from the Garden Club of America, Garden Communicator Award from the American Nursery and Landscape Association (ANLA), Horticultural Communicator Award from the American Horticultural Society (AHS), and the Odyssey Award from the Hendrix College Board of Trustees honoring the achievements of Hendrix College alumni.

James C. Leake was a Television pioneer along with his wife Marjory Griffin Lake and brother-in-law John “J.T.” Griffin. In the 1940s, they applied to the FCC for licenses to put television stations in Little Rock, Arkansas (KATV), Tulsa, Oklahoma (KTUL) and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (KWTV). They put these three stations on the air in nine months. What you are about to hear is James Leake describing the process from application time, their competition, money issues, to building studios, and to when they went on the air, December 1953.It was February 3, 1998, when Mr. Leake recorded this oral history account of Oklahoma and Arkansas television. He was 83 years old when he talked for an hour without an interviewer or notes as he recalled in interesting detail the many challenges they faced in constructing these stations “put on by folks who had never seen it.”We are grateful to Nancy and Richard Sevenoaks (daughter and son-in-law) of Jimmy Leake for providing this recording. James C. Leake was 86 when he died July 3, 2001.

An 18-year-old college student has been elected to serve as mayor of a small east Arkansas city, becoming one of the youngest people to serve as a city's top leader in the U.S. Jaylen Smith, who is Black, was elected mayor of Earle in a runoff election on December 6, winning 235 votes to Nemi Matthews' 183, according to complete but unofficial results. He's among the youngest mayors elected in the United States and would be the youngest member of the African American Mayors Association. Phyllis Dickerson, chief executive officer of the association, told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the association's current youngest member is Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, who is 35. Smith is among a handful of people elected mayor before turning 20, including Michael Sessions, who was elected mayor of Hillsdale, Michigan, in 2005 when he was 18; and John Tyler Hammons, who was elected mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma, in 2008 when he was 19. Smith, who graduated from Earle High School in May 2022, campaigned on improving public safety and bringing new businesses, including a grocery store, to the city of about 1,800 people 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Memphis, Tennessee. He is a student at Arkansas State University Mid-South in West Memphis, Arkansas. “People looking at me, well I'm too young, he has no experience, he's fresh out of high school,” Smith told Little Rock TV station KATV. “But I used to always tell people you have to start somewhere in life.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with professional speaker and social media strategist, https://www.ashleyannspeaks.com/. (Ashley Ann). Ashley helps clients get paid for the work that they enjoy doing. She works with individuals or companies and has helped over 700 people make six-figure incomes with their social media accounts. Ashley's strategies include building an audience and establishing reach organically as well as finding a balance between human interaction and automation. This is done to maintain a business and set up a system to create longevity. Ashley explains that there are only 1-3 categories of people that will understand a business or individual's message and product. These groups of people need to be focused on creating reach by identifying what they think they need, and what they actually need. Schedules for business owners tend to be quite busy and it can be hard to find the time to make a presence on social media. Ashley advises that everyone use a text community or text list because emails tend to get ignored for promotions. People are more likely to check a text message rather than an email. This connection allows for the reach to grow as an individual can promote more productively with better outcomes from the audience. Hiring an engagement team is a good way to gain media attention on an individual's behalf. It takes time for a team to learn the voice they are trying to portray. Ashley finds it beneficial to have meetings with her engagement team to modify or give points to more accurately imitate her response. Ashley advises to not always use advertisements to sell but to use them to also inform an audience. Segmentation is a way to group individuals into categories based on their needs to give them only the information they desire. Ashley utilizes this to set up a schedule of when to contact each person based on what segment they are in. https://www.kansascity.com/news/nation-world/national/article251340103.htmlhttps://abc7ny.com/teen-mom-baby-abandoned-customer-woman-saves/10668533/Four children missing since last year were found Tuesday, three of them barricaded with their mom in a safe room at their grandmother's Arkansas home.Their mother, Lisa Goodman, lost custody of the kids but refused to turn them over to authorities and reportedly fled the state, according to the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office. They were ages 5, 7, 15 and 16 at the time Goodman lost custody, KATV reported. When Tustison answered the door for the deputies, she said she hadn't seen her daughter or grandkids. The deputies had a search warrant and inside they found a barricaded safe room with Goodman and three of the children.“Negotiations were attempted, but Goodman refused to open the door or even acknowledge our presence,” the sheriff's office said, so they tried a different tactic. “Operators with the LCSO Emergency Response Team successfully rescued the children and took Goodman into custody safely.”Goodman and Tustison were arrested and face charges including four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, interference with custody, and obstructing governmental operations, the sheriff's office said. A man named Zean Tustison was also arrested.JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (WABC) -- A teenager walked into a restaurant in Jersey City on Wednesday afternoon with a newborn, handed the baby to a customer and then left. The entire incident at the El Patron restaurant was captured on surveillance video. The 14-year-old mother walked up to the counter and claimed she found the infant girl.Restaurant owner Frankie Aguilar said the teen handed the baby to a good Samaritan and ran away.Alease Scott and her boyfriend Walter Cocca were eating lunch when the teen asked for help.Scott didn't hesitate."I said do you mind if I check the baby's vitals, she readily handed the baby over to me so my focus went right onto the baby," Scott said. The teen mother walked out leaving Scott with the newborn girl who still had a portion of the umbilical cord attached. Scott and her boyfriend could tell the baby was having trouble breathing. Police were called and quickly responded with medical gear and oxygen. Fortunately, Scott is trained in CPR and first aid. "Once I applied the oxygen mask to the baby, all of a sudden we heard the most beautiful cry and the baby started moving, she slightly opened up her eyes and then she closed her eyes but the sweetest thing was when she got hungry and she was trying to suckle on the oxygen mask so we knew she was OK after that," Scott said. Police found the teen mother and said both she and the baby are doing well. The child will be put up for adoption, and at this point, the 14-year-old is not facing charges. The family owned business said they were happy the teenage mom decided to go to their restaurant for help. "And hopefully we as a society become better at just helping one another, especially after COVID," Aguilar said.

Episode 179 - Viktoria Capek. Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Viktoria Capek. Viktoria Capek, from Lawrenceville, GA, has been a storyteller and creative her entire life. She pursued theatre in school but made the switch to journalism when she realized the two fields were similar. Journalism would allow her to interact with a broad spectrum of people from different backgrounds. Now 25, Viktoria is a morning news and traffic reporter for KATV in Little Rock, AR. She also hosts the station's morning lifestyle show, Good Morning Arkansas. Viktoria is outspoken and extremely transparent on social media, gaining traction on TikTok and Instagram for being an openly LGBT news-personality and encouraging other young people to be their authentic selves. She's known for combatting industry norms by wearing more androgynous clothing, occasionally baring a large tattoo on her right shoulder and calling out viewers for making negative, unnecessary comments on her and her co-workers' appearance. Viktoria dreams to host her own show highlighting the stories of everyday people. She wants everyone to know their story is incredible and worth sharing with the world. She also wants to encourage others to be bold enough to ask strangers who they are, where they come from and what gets them out of bed in the mornings. Little Rock, AR — A deeply disturbing video was released last March showing a cowboy cop, Officer Charles Starks jump on the hood of a man's car and dump 15 rounds into him—instantly killing him. The family of the victim has been trying to expose the unnecessary nature of this shooting but their fight has hit barrier after barrier. In April, it was announced that this cop would face no charges for murdering Bradley Blackshire, 30, but he was still fired. Now, however, he's getting his job back. According to KATV, “Pulaski County Circuit Judge Tim Fox on Thursday ordered the police department to reinstate Charles Starks and retroactively suspend Starks 30 days without pay. Ep 108 | October 5, 2018 Kerry McCoy sits down with P. Allen Smith on Up In Your Business Paul Allen Smith Jr., the oldest of four children, was born on March 12, 1960, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He grew up in McMinnville, Tennessee, in the Cumberland Mountains, where his father’s family had farmed for several generations and also operated an ornamental plant business. Smith calls himself a fourth-generation nurseryman and horticulturist. Regular appearances on local radio led to a weekly gardening segment on Little Rock television station KATV’s Daybreak show in 1989. It soon led to a syndicated program starting in 2000, P. Allen Smith’s Gardens, which was largely shot at Smith’s historic home in Little Rock’s Quapaw Quarter. His awards and recognition's include the 2009 Arkansas Cultural Enrichment Award from the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, the 2011 4-H Celebration of Excellence Award, the Medal of Honor from the Garden Club of America, Garden Communicator Award from the American Nursery and Landscape Association (ANLA), Horticultural Communicator Award from the American Horticultural Society (AHS), and the Odyssey Award from the Hendrix College Board of Trustees honoring the achievements of Hendrix College alumni.

He got his first car sales job in 1970, graduated from Benton High school in 1971 (after attending summer school) and married in 1972. He went in with his father and began his own car dealership later that year. By the early 90’s, Landers Auto Group included three separate dealerships. In 1995, Landers sold to United Auto Group for 40 million dollars. In 1998, the United Auto Group hired Steve Landers to be president of the south-central US region. He stepped down in 2003. In 2005, Landers partnered with McLarty and purchased another 20 dealerships. Presently, Landers is CEO of the Steve Landers Auto Group, which includes all dealerships under the Landers name in Arkansas. He also has a partial interest in McClarty Automotive. In addition to his automotive dealerships, he is involved in the horse-racing community. In 2016, he was appointed to the Arkansas Racing Commission. Once a week during football season each year, KATV’s sports staff selects a student athlete to receive the Landers Award and scholarship, which is given to a high school athlete for exemplifying “the spirit of courage and dedication that all student athletes must master to be the best in the State.” The Steve Landers Family Foundation also funds various charitable works throughout Arkansas.
