About the Lecture: This conversation will be devoted to Elena Kostyuchenko's book I Love Russia: Reporting from a Lost Country (2023), “a haunting book of rare courage,” as Clarissa Ward, CNN chief international correspondent, called it. In March 2022, as a correspondent for Russia's last independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, Kostyuchenko crossed the border into Ukraine to cover the war. It was her mission to ensure that Russians witnessed the horrors Putin was committing in their name. I Love Russia stitches together reportage from the past fifteen years with personal essays, assembling a kaleidoscopic narrative that Kostyuchenko understands may be the last work from her homeland that she'll publish for a long time—perhaps ever. It exposes the inner workings of an entire nation as it descends into fascism and, inevitably, war. I Love Russia earned several distinctions, including a Best Book of the Year by The New Yorker and TIME, and the Pushkin House Book Prize (London, U.K.). About the Speaker: Elena Kostyuchenko is a Russian journalist; in 2024-2025, she is a Fellow at The Nieman Foundation for Journalism, Harvard University. She was born in Yaroslavl, Russia, in 1987, and she spent seventeen years reporting for Novaya Gazeta, Russia's last major independent newspaper, until it was shut down in the spring of 2022 in response to her reporting from Ukraine after the start of the Russian invasion. She is the author of two books published in Russian, Unwanted on Probation and We Have to Live Here, and is the recipient of the European Press Prize, the Free Media Award, and the Paul Khlebnikov Prize. This event is part of the CREECA lecture series, which is held on Thursdays at 4:00 pm. Coffee, tea, and cookies served starting at 3:45. **This talk was co-sponsored by the UW-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Center for Journalism Ethics.**

Rosa Parks is best known to Americans as a national treasure — the little old lady who sat down on a bus and “ended racism.” What we lose in that depiction is what happened before and afterward, which is to say most of the story of Park's lifetime of activism. Soledad O'Brien, the award-winning journalist and producer, has just executive  produced the first ever full-length documentary on the Civil Rights icon, titled “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks.” based on the book by Jeanne Theoharis, and directed by Yoruba Richen and Johanna Hamilton. The film tells a much fuller story of the woman best known for her role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The film is also being used to create a curriculum for K-12 students. Laura welcomes back Soledad for this revealing conversation on Parks, her legacy, and what the media got wrong. Why is it essential to dispel the myths and to fully understand the role that strategic organizing played in the actions of Rosa Parks, and the implications for her life, and ours today?“Who knew Rosa Parks was a fan of the Black Panthers? Who knew Rosa Parks was as much of a fan of Malcolm X as she was of Dr. King? What does it say about this vision we had of Rosa Parks, where everybody knows her and yet even Hollywood celebrities can't identify this woman who's called the mother of the movement.”“I talk about mistakes I made all the time. I don't mind. I'm happy to, I did them. They exist on tape somewhere. It's okay, let's fix it. Let's get better from it. I think we just need more introspection.”Guest:Soledad O'Brien, CEO of Soledad O'Brien Productions; Award-winning Journalist, Producer & Philanthropist; Executive Producer, The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks Full Episode Notes are available to Patreon members and non-members.  We are listener and viewer supported media.  Patreon members receive early access to the full uncut conversation at https://Patreon.com/theLFShow  For more ways to donate go to LauraFlanders.org/donate

Harbath is a global leader who works at the intersection of elections, democracy, and tech.  Most recently, she was a public policy director at Facebook where she was credited with building out and leading a global team responsible for managing elections over the course of 10 years.  She played a significant role in building another team of over 30 people that worked to engage governments and elected officials from around the world at the local, regional, and national levels, in using Facebook and Instagram to connect and engage with constituents.  She worked closely with product development teams to deploy civic engagement and election integrity products, including transparency features for political ads, developing and implementing election policies, building teams to support government, political, and advocacy partners, and working with policymakers to shape election regulations online.  Harbath was involved in this work in major elections for every country around the globe, including the United States, India, Brazil, United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, Philippines, and Mexico.  Before joining Facebook, Harbath held senior strategic digital roles at the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, DCI Group and multiple campaigns.  She sits on the boards of the National Conference on Citizenship, Democracy Works and the Center for Journalism Ethics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In today's episode, Rick and Sam are joined by Kathleen Culver, associate professor in the UW-Madison School of Journalism & Mass Communication and director of the Center for Journalism Ethics. Kathleen shares her perspectives on the role of journalism in society, first examining the ethical challenges for journalists, particularly for young journalists. From there, the discussion broadens to include how to use media responsibly to be informed and engaged citizens, social media's influence on journalism, and the future of journalism (hint: there is reason for optimism). Kathleen Culver is the James E. Burgess Chair in Journalism Ethics, an associate professor in the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism & Mass Communication and director of the Center for Journalism Ethics. Long interested in the implications of digital media on journalism and public communication, Culver focuses on the ethical dimensions of social tools, technological advances and networked information. She also serves as visiting faculty for the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and was the founding editor of PBS MediaShift's education section. The Center for Journalism Ethics has been an important vehicle for her work, engaging hundreds of people through annual conferences, public panels, training sessions and other appearances, and has recently focused on topics including ethics and immigration reporting, the impact of #MeToo on media, and how journalism can address partisanship and other social divisions. Culver is widely recognized for her curricular innovations, including the School of Journalism and Mass Communication's gateway course, Mass Media Practices. This bootcamp course trains over 100 students each semester in the concepts and skills necessary to approach disrupted media industries with adaptability, critical thinking and integrity. She regularly trains other communications educators through her work with Poynter and the Center for Journalism Ethics. Prof. Culver also offered a fascinating and insightful take on the popular politicization of the term “cancel culture” and why she thinks it undermines meaningful discussion about the intent and consequences of harmful and misleading speech in political discourse. As always, we thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Prof. Culver.

In a world flooded with information, everybody necessarily makes choices about what we pay attention to. Broads You Should Know is the podcast about the Broads who helped shape our world. This week, Sam brings us the story of the woman who single-handedly reshaped an industry while taking down another: Ida Tarbell!Ida was one of the first investigative journalists. She imposed strict rules upon herself that became the standard for the type of journalism we see today, things like: 1) Off the record, 2) Never betray your source, & 3) Never accept gifts from an interview subject. While researching Abraham Lincoln, she was one of the first reporters to track down old friends and neighbors to get the subject's life story starting in childhood. Without her, reporting would look a whole lot different, and that's why we think she's a broad you should know. Broads You Should Know is Hosted by Sam Eggers, Sara Gorsky, & Justin Xavier. NBC is investigating its nightly news anchor and claims he made about being aboard a helicopter shot down over Iraq. Williams has apologized and claims over 12 years he misremembered the flight he was on wasn't the flight forced out of the sky by RPG fire. Now Williams claims while reporting hurricane Katrina in New Orleans are also being skeptically viewed. Guest: Steve Liewer. Military reporter. Omaha World-Herald. Liewer was in Iraq in 2003 reporting for Stars and Stripes and embedded with helicopter crews. He flew out to speak to crew of the Chinook forced down by the RPG fire and says the pilot and crew of that helicopter accused Brian Williams of lying about being on the flight. That the NBC crew arrived later, took photos and film and wanted to interview the crew and its pilot Don Helus, but they refused. Williams now says he was on the Chinook behind the one which took fire. Also not true say the chopper crews. They maintain Williams and his NBC crew were on a completely different mission. That story is supported by Chris Simeone, pilot of the Chinook Williams flew on. Helus emailed Williams producer asking for a retraction from Williams to the claim he'd been on the chopper which took fire. There was no reply. Being shot is not something you misremember. I've been shot and remember the circumstances exactly, even though it was decades ago and a minor caliber gun. Should Brian Williams be fired? Surprised someone in a major media position like Brian Williams would for years publicly continue to tell a story which is a complete fabrication, after being asked by military members who were there to retract his claim? Ever told a lie which bit you? Ever caught someone in a major lie which impacted their work? What did you do about it? The journalistic ethics question surrounding NBC's Brian Williams.
