There's a chance you've brushed paths with this week's cult in a West Coast farmers market or while scrolling through #yogainspiration, or as of late, your HBOMax recommended page. Kundalini yoga promises spiritual awakening, cosmic energy, and a path to your highest self. But behind the flowing white turbans and chanting in sat nam, there's a darker story—one of control, secrecy, and not one but TWO gurus with highly questionable pasts. This week, we're unraveling the culty underbelly of Kundalini, its infamous founder Yogi Bhajan, and his 20-teens girlbossified equivalent, Katie Griggs. From Instagram livestreams at millennial haven RaMa Studios to the militarized "3HO" organization (Healthy, Happy, Holy—or is it?), we're asking: When does devotion cross the line into dogma? Strap in for a deep dive with Hayley Phelan (@hayleyphelan), journalist behind the article that powered HBO Max's Breath of Fire docuseries, and spiritual/sexual abuse lawyer Carol Merchasin, as Amanda and Reese discover why so many former followers say this spiritual practice left them anything but zen. Today our guests are historian Philip Deslippe and writer Stacie Sutkin, who together have done investigative reporting on 3HO (“happy, healthy, holy organization”), Kundalini yoga, and Yogi Bhajan. They're going to tell us how they got started writing about 3HO, both interacting with Kundalini yoga in different ways, who Yogi Bhajan was and whether he had any credibility in the Sikh religion (spoiler: he did not), and how he began to get white Americans to believe he was the ultimate spiritual authority, rapidly expanding and profiting off of the money and property of his followers. They'll tell us about some of the many ways Yogi Bhajan exerted control over his followers lives, the practice of separating children from their parents in a practice called “distance therapy,” and the boarding schools kids were sent to for years that turned out to be neglectful and abusive, all within full knowledge and approval of Yogi Bhajan. Plus, the wave of survivors that came forward to tell their stories of his and the organization's abuse, and how they were failed by 3HO's reparations program. We have deals for you! This episode from the archives originally aired in 2020 After four successful years of working on TV shows and films in New York City, Jules Hartley thought it would be a good idea for her to move to LA. A couple of years into her Hollywood journey, she discovered Kundalini yoga as taught specifically by Yogi Bhajan and the Golden Bridge Yoga Studio in Hollywood. She was instantly hooked and began what turned into a seven and a half year stint as a hardcore and fanatical member of what is now The Rama Yoga Institute, 3HO, and their brand of Sikhism. The yoga and meditation lifestyle given by Yogi Bhajan thus became her entire universe, and within a year or two, she was devoting up to 18 hours a day, to practices that Yogi Bhajan said would ultimately make her life better and get her to "ascend". Jules explains to Rachel why she ultimately ended up leaving Hollywood in 2018, very sick after her experiences, and completely broke as she had given her money over to this group. She details her experiences leaving the intense systemic control of this cultic yoga group and provides insight on her journey to recovery. Before You Go: Rachel shares her perspective on the results of the 2020 U.S Presidential Election and provides insight into why people who have left cults were so triggered by the US president for the last 4 years and how he behaved, and were so troubled by seeing how many militant hate groups and conspiratorial groups like QAnon felt supported by him.

Rodolfo Caro (formerly Bhajanjeet Singh) became a KY instructor in 2004 and integrated his home, family and spa business into the lifestyle brand of promoting KY and Sikh Dharma over the next 18 years in Guadalajara Mexico. He was even a IKYTA Mexico board member until 2018 when he began to disconnect from his local sangat community because of incongruency. In 2020 when the book Premka came out he began to confront the dark side of KY for real. After the Beyond the Cage FB group, reading the AOB report, listening to the UCpodcast, and all the material that became available, Rodolfo began deprogramming and figuring out his own practice, totally removing himself from KY Cult. He's a Bodyworker and massage therapist and Spa owner of Canto Yoga & Spa in Guadalajara México. He's a content creator for health and mind and has collaborated in 2024 as a book translator for "Under the Yoga Mat" spanish versión for Latin America. He's the Co-Creator of the youtube channel for the continuity of conversations in spanish, for uncomfortable conversations podcast. Ivan Sanchez (Siri Om Singh) was in the KY Cult from 2006-2021. He was a kundalini instructor for 11 years, taking his first teacher Training by 2009. His mentors were Tarn Taran Kaur (USA), Shiv Charan Singh (PORTUGAL) and Gurujodha Singh (Mexico) at RaMa Kundalini Yoga school in Mexico City. As an instructor he achieved level II certification in his training as a Kundalini Yoga teacher. He was a member of ATA (Aquarian Teachers Academy) training as a leading trainer to teach courses and training for future teachers. In 2020 he discovered the book White Bird in a Golden Cage by Premka and also came across the book Trust All For Nothing, my time saving Yogi Bhajan by Wahe Guru Kaur and seeing himself reflected in many of the statements of physical and psychological abuse that he finds in these documents, he decides to investigate and realizes that there are thousands of people around the world raising their voices and talking about abuse within the so-called Kundalini Yoga community led by 3HO and KRI.Not finding support or coherence in many colleagues, students and teachers in Mexico at that time, he makes the decision to renounce his titles, his classes, his lifestyle and the community. From that moment on, he uses social networks to make complaints and support people who are realizing the manipulation that exists in the "white sect" as he usually calls it. Ivan has been attacked by people who consider that he is harming the community and the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, however that does not stop him from continuing to raise his voice and helping more and more people to realize the deceptions and manipulation into which they can fall by the misnamed Kundalini Yoga community.Currently, after a process of therapy and with the help of his partner and great friends, he's managed to heal many emotional wounds. He decided to continue raising his voice, because after 4 years, the current Kundalini Yoga teachers continue to give classes and hold teacher training sessions as if nothing had happened, and that seems extremely dangerous to me for people who are looking for something to feel better about themselves. For this reason, he has partnered w/ Els Coenen and Rodolfo to share information in Spanish in Mexico and Latin America since a lot of guidance is needed due to the language difference with regions such as the United States or Europe.UC Podcast Episode 48: Siri Om Singh; Mexico City, Mexico (Started KY 2006 - 2021)Book link to Under the Yoga Mat: The Dark History of Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga Abuse in Kundalini Yoga Website GuruNischan is a writer, pleasure activist, and consultant in personal reinvention for unorthodox high achievers. Returning guests, Stacie Stukin and Phillip Deslippe are joining the show once again to speak about their newest investigative piece on the troublesome boarding schools of the 3HO community. Stacie Stukin is an arts and culture journalist from Los Angeles. She was a contributing editor at Yoga Journal and has also written about yoga for the Los Angeles Times and Time Magazine. Over the years, she's had the opportunity to write about Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, including a majorly impactful article for Los Angeles Magazine about the sexual misconduct allegations against Yogi Bhajan and the subsequent reckoning within the 3HO community. Philip Deslippe is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and holds an MA from the University of Iowa. He has written articles for several academic journals including the Journal of Yoga Studies and Tricycle magazine. Philip was himself a member of 3HO for about a decade after taking a Kundalini Yoga class at his undergraduate college in the mid-1990s. He left in 2008 and went on to conduct research into the origins of Yogi Bhajan's Kundalini Yoga that culminated in the ground-breaking 2012 article "From Maharaj to Mahan Tantric" for Sikh Formations. In this revealing conversation, Stacie & Phillip delve into the disturbing practices within the 3HO community, particularly focusing on the abusive and neglectful conditions at the boarding schools in India. Philip provides a detailed history of Yogi Bhajan's rise to power and the hierarchical structure he created, which facilitated widespread abuse and control. Stacie shares harrowing accounts from former members, highlighting the long-lasting impact of the community's toxic environment. The discussion also covers the recent reparations program for survivors of abuse within 3HO. While the program aimed to provide settlements and institutional changes, many claimants found it re-traumatizing and inadequate. Uncomfortable Conversations Podcast The Untold Stories of the 3HO Kundalini Yoga Community
Manju Sadarangani was born and raised in India, surrounded by yoga. Her yoga teacher mother insisted on an upbringing informed by yoga and traditional medicine. In her teen years, her deeply spiritual brilliant father joined a Hindu cult, resulting in upheaval resulting in her immigration to the United States with her mother and brother. Manju found yoga in the US to be deeply puzzling. She would try yoga studios and styles of yoga in an effort to feel the spiritual solace of her childhood yoga practice, but felt extremely excluded at American yoga studios. Through most of her adult life, she avoided yoga, and practiced it only when she visited the country of her birth. In 2019, serendipity led her to a kundalini yoga class. She was intrigued by this unfamiliar style of yoga which she found absurd and amusing, but was soothed by the elements of Surat Shabd that she recognized in kundalini yoga practice. She enjoyed the element of play and creativity in her kundalini meditations, but found herself often flummoxed by the pastiche mantras and practices. She was offended by some practices (like excerpts of Japji inserted into kriyas) - but when she asked questions of kundalini teachers, they were not able to give her answers that felt logical or grounded in any yoga discipline. Her teachers encouraged her to take teacher training with KRI, telling her that was where she would get answers. Manju was understandably reluctant, especially after she read the book Premka. In 2020, she was approached by representatives of KRI, who recommended a brand-new global teacher training program. This new TT was advertised as trauma-informed, inclusive, egalitarian - a symbol of the new direction KRI and 3HO were embracing. Manju applied to this new teacher training global cohort. She was one of only three Americans, all women of color. It turned out to be one of the most traumatic and racist experiences of her life. Since then, Manju has relied on her command of languages, academic background in South Asian history, conversations with elders and teachers in India, and cultural background to deeply research, question, retrain, and reform her yoga practice. She connects deeply with the feminist, spiritual and historical foundations of yoga to counter problematic cultural appropriation. Her evolving yoga practice is grounded in a desire for equity, justice, emotional and mental well-being. She brings her spirit of play, body positivity and radical self-love to her yoga practice, acknowledging that her yoga journey makes her an inconvenient outsider the art of manju manjusadarangani.com Song credit: Vaishnav Janto Tene Kahiye by M.S. Siri Whitecrow, was born Elias Seneca Whitecrow in 1972 in Juneau, Alaska. His mom, Sat guru Kaur, joined 3HO with his older sister, Siri Kaur, in 1976 and his name was changed to Siri Singh Khalsa. His early life was spent between two different ashrams in Anchorage, Alaska, then in 1979 he was sent to Española New Mexico at 7 years old, living with two different families. In 1981 he was sent to the newly (not yet) established India program GNFC, initially being sent to the girls school because he was so young and only in 3rd grade. After four years in India, and tons of horrific abuse, and plenty of righteous resistance, he was kicked out of that school and sent back to the USA. He spent half a year at Amritsar Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was eventually asked to “not return”. He ended up in Los Angeles, near his mom and close to the ashram, but by 1988 he left 3HO/Sikh Dharma/Kundalini Yoga completely, never looking back. Graffiti became a huge part of his life and currently still is. His Graffiti name is ANGER and he runs one of the biggest graffiti crews in the world which began in 1993 when his life was forever altered when his mentor was hit by a train, and he was shot 4X by a Los Angeles police officer. Uncomfortable Conversations Podcast The Untold Stories of the 3HO Kundalini Yoga Community
Ravi Singh began practicing Kundalini Yoga in 1973 and lived in the 3HO ashram in Chicago, IL. In 1974 he moved to New York City to be a writer and continued to practice Kundalini Yoga and began teaching. In the late 70's I had a brief stint as a resident of the 3HO ashram in Brooklyn, NY. He attended every Summer and Winter Solstice gathering from 1976 to 2000 and before 1999 would typically teach Kundalini Yoga at those events. In 1999 he discovered that YB had propositioned one of my students at Women's Camp. That was when the floodgates opened and the scope of what was going on behind the scenes became abundantly clear. When he attempted to alert people he was summarily kicked out of 3HO. His state of mind since then has been one of personal liberation, i.e., relief that he doesn't have to continue to try to be someone he's not. It became more obvious over time that there's no room in an organization like 3HO for artists, autonomous beings, or independent thinkers. Ravi Singh is Author (with partner Ana Brett) of the Kundalini Yoga Book - Life in the Vast Lane. He's been teaching yoga for 45 yrs. He is Founder of Evolving Kundalini, which was created via the need for a safe space for Kundalini Yoga Teachers to gather and process. EK is now a non-profit dedicated to ethics in yoga, and the forward evolution and the up-leveling of all things Kundalini. Guru Kartar Kaur (she now goes by Rue) was born into 3HO in Mexico City in 1997 to her parents, Guru Hans Kaur Khalsa and Siri Simran Singh. A couple months after she was born, Rue and her sister, Partmatma Kaur, were brought to New Mexico by her parents, to attend the Summer Solstice where she met YB and received her spiritual name from him. Rue's parents were originally raised catholic but later converted to Sikhism and joined the 3HO community through her maternal grandmother, Hari Kaur Khalsa, who first became a member of Babaji's Ashram; the first 3HO Ashram in Mexico City in 1972. Rue participated in Summer Solstice with her family for 7 years straight. At age 11, her parents decided to send her to MPA so that she could practice and learn more about the Sikh religion. Her older sister was first sent away in 2007 and then Rue joined her a year after. They lived in India for 3 years straight and later returned back to Mexico as their parents no longer found the school appropriate and affordable. Rue has now been living in Ontario, Canada for 11 years. She is currently in the works of opening her own art business and will soon be attending college for social service work. Through her own self-healing journey and research, she discovered she has dealt with racism and sexism as a Latina with indigenous ancestry, especially while being part of a religious cult at a young age. This is a follow up conversation w/ Darci Laroque to share the lasting IMPACT of childhood neglect, abandonment, and survivalist 3HO training to breed "spiritual-warriors" that she, and other children of 3HO/Kundalini Yoga, "Sikh Dharma" received. Hint: It's NOT Healthy, Happy, or Holy. It's communal abandonment disguised as consciousness. GuruNischan.com ____________________ From Eps. 55: Darci Larocque, was born Darci Clack in 1971. Her father joined 3HO in 1974 in the New Haven Ashram. Her mom and father were divorced and at the age of 5, she started visiting the ashram in Dorchester, MA, where her father had moved. One day in first grade catholic school, her dad and a friend in full Bana showed up in the middle of a school day and took her. Darci was taken to the Dorchester ashram and even though her mom had full custody, her father wouldn't give her back. It was the 1970s - her mom, then 23 year old could not fight it so she joined 3HO and moved in. Darci's dad was Deva Singh. Her mom was Ram Sarn Kaur and her name became Upma. After Children's Camp in 1978, at 7 years old she was sent to the newly created Guardian Program in New Mexico where she stayed for years; first with one set of guardians then with the heads of the ashram. Which among other things, she had direct ranch access that only in hindsight she can now see as “special”. During this time, her mom moved to the LA ashram and YB engaged her to be married. She was supposed to go to India - but stayed behind with even more YB and ranch access. Her friends (other kids in the guardian program) left in the first group to Mussoorie, India. She ended up in LA and NM for a couple years back and forth. She was fully " out" at 13. Her dad stayed in until he died 16 years ago. Her mom left when she was 15 and she continued to work at the Golden Temple and stayed dressed in her turban while she worked. She died 7 years ago. Her whole life in 3HO was her life via her dad and friends. She didn't choose to “be cut” out. Until she was 40, she considered herself a Sikh. Only in the past two years did she finally recognize that she wasn't a Sikh. She was raised in a cult. This is a very important episode! It has taken us 2 years to be able to bring this to you and Emmas story will shock and inspire you.Emma didn't choose her young life, it happened to her. Emma is extremely brave in talking about this part of her life and you will hear how traumatic it was at not just a young age but at any age. She hopes that by listening you will understand what her life was like and help others that have been through similar situations.Emma can now speak about this because she is the first out of dozens of confirmed victims to win a legal settlement with the 2 lawyers who were on the team that got Larry Nasser 175 years in jail. Her settlement now proves that Yogi Bharjan is not only a serial predator of adults but a confirmed paedophile of children. We don't want this to be the focus on the yogi but how Emma was able to turn her life around into a positive future! This is also not about Kundalini yoga but about Yogi Bhajan and 3Ho and the atrocities they committed in the 90s.Important website to help youth suicide:END THE SILENT EPIDEMIC | Youth Suicide Prevention MovementInstagram page:End The Silent Epidemic (@endthesilentepidemic) • Instagram photos and videosPlease read the Olive Branch report for further information:An Olive Branch's Shocking Report on Yogi Bhajan Revealed - THE GURU MAGAZINEFurther reading:Master of Deceit: How Yogi Bhajan Used Kundalini Yoga for Money, Sex and Power - THE GURU MAGAZINEYogi Bhajan Left Generations of Victims of Alleged Sex Abuse in His Wake (lamag.com)#cult #religiousabuse #kundalinyoga Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Part Two with Jules Hartley. We go into detail of her personal story of emotional/psychological abuse from her Teacher Tej Kaur (Los Angeles; Nine Treasures), other 3HO experiences including White Tantric Yoga for both Winter and Summer Solstice, Los Angeles, as well as the highly "coveted" position and privilege of volunteering at the SSS Cabin to serve the subtle body of YB and the "WTY Facilitators" who were the live in-person representatives of the Mahan Tantric himself. Lots of details and stories revealed in this episode. _______________ Jules Hartley joined 3HO in 2011, changed her name to Amrita Kaur, and actively participated as a kundalini yoga teacher, worked for WTY (Health&Humanology), Golden Bridge Yoga, Nine Treasures Yoga, and performed work exchange for KRI and 3HO, and did seva at the RaMa Institute as well as the Guru Ram Das Ashram in LA through the end of 2018. She grew up in San Diego and Northern Virginia, and then went to college in New York City where she began her career as an actress and producer in the film & TV industry. Upon the suggestion of her manager at the time, she moved to Hollywood, where she lived for over a decade––Much of which was defined by her life in 3HO, serving the community. She has lived back in San Diego since leaving LA in 2018, and is currently finishing up her fourth year rotations & classes of medical school. A second career in naturopathic medicine has given her a fresh perspective and the chance at a new start in my life since leaving the 3HO cult. Peter Blachly (Blatchley) was a devotee of the man who called himself Yogi Bhajan from 1970 until 1987, when he was finally disillusioned by his close contact with YB and made a break from the organization. Peter was one of the early adopters of the Sikh religion, had an arranged marriage, two children who attended schools in India, and served as a “Singh Sahib” and member of the Khalsa Council until his departure in 1987. Earlier, with Steve Josephs, then known as GuruShabad Singh, and Livtar, who is still in the cult, he formed the Khalsa String Band, published several albums of music, and took the band on a national tour in 1974-5. Recordings of Peter's original songs are still played in Yoga classes around the world. He now lives in Bath, Maine with his wife, Johannah Harkness, a psychotherapist. He recently published book one of his two part memoir called, The Inner Circle, which documents his 17 year journey in detail. Peter is happy to speak with anyone about his experience in 3HO. Uncomfortable Conversations Podcast The Untold Stories of the 3HO Kundalini Yoga Community
Guru Gun Kaur, simply goes by Gigi, joined 3HO in 1972 at Mendocino Summer Solstice. She became devoted to the practice of yoga, cleansing and detoxing from her young adult years during the time of sex, drugs and rock and roll; moving away from the “negative” lifestyle, while rapidly moving toward her new found faith and “conscious” family, led by Yogi Bhajan. For the next 12 years she immersed herself in the Sikh tradition of sacred music, Kirtan and her faith as a sacred devotion. She was arranged to be married in 1974 and soon after in 1976, YB influenced her to relinquish her family inheritance, which was eventually used to purchase the Summer Solstice land, known in 3HO as Ram Das Puri, in Espanol, New Mexico. In 1979 YB turned on Gigi, vowing to destroy her, and eventually influenced her to give up her children to her ex-husband. Yet she carried on as a devotee until December 1983, when she finally left; but remained devoted to the Sikh Faith. 2020 was an uproar which opened the old wounds and forced her into the swirl of all that went left unexamined. Today Gigi finds herself struggling to even keep a roof over her head, yet in spite of all of this trauma and loss, she knows she's on the path to healing the deep emotional wounds she has suffered. She's in contact with her children, who've also shared their stories with her of their abuse during the years after she was forced to leave them behind. She's grateful for all spiritual support and prayers in the spirit of brotherly and sisterly love. Sat Pavan Kaur was born into the 3HO community and Sikh Religion. She spent her childhood moving around to various 3HO communities. At the age of 8, she was sent to India with 120 other children to go to boarding school leaving her family back in the US. At 16, she would be taken out of school and join YBs personal staff. In the last couple of years, she has left the Cult but stayed within the greater Sikh community. She is one of the many women that was abused by Yogi Bhajan. She has had to unravel her life, the good, the bad, and the horror that she experienced growing up in the 3HO community; the abuse she was subjected to, the toll it took on her and her husband, and the clear choices she made to raise her children differently from how she was raised. She has been teaching and performing dance for the last 30 years to people of all ages and backgrounds. She is passionate about teaching and inspiring creativity, confidence, and individuality in her students, especially the younger generation which has been a hugely positive outlet for her. Satpavan is also a musician who plays Kirtan and has played Sikh religious music since she was a young girl and continues to do so. Her music, along with dance has kept her going by providing a sense of healing throughout her life. She lives with her two children and husband of 27 years, raising her family and working hard to be a good person and do good in the world around her. Sat is also featured in the Vice documentary The Dark Empire of Yogi Bhajan which is available now. In this second conversation with Rachel, Satpavan fills in some of the missing parts of the story she shared with us last week. She dives deep into the corruption but also incredible successes of the many businesses that members of the 3HO community built, explaining how YB would enrich himself while his devotees struggle to survive. Rachel shares her insights on why followers have remained devoted to YB even after his death while Satpavan explains why she still has empathy for those who continue to defend him. Before You Go: Rachel discusses how cult leaders and abusers are often not bounded by logic and explains why their victims can sometimes suffer in silence for so long. In this intimate conversation, Sat Pavan shares a full portrait of her life being born into the 3HO cult, from how her parents were pulled in to her childhood development as she was whisked away from one unsafe situation to another. Sat expertly points out the key moments of indoctrination, suffering, and, red flags she experienced throughout her decades involved with 3HO and it's monstrous guru. Throughout her story, Rachel offers insights from a psychological perspective to help explain the cult dynamics at play in her experiences and together they look forward to the healing that is to come in the future. Before You Go: Rachel explains why people who have survived intense trauma compartmentalize their emotions and often seem to downplay their suffering outwardly. Uncomfortable Conversations Podcast The Untold Stories of the 3HO Kundalini Yoga Community
Today's guest is Taran Kaur. Her birth and original name was Alice, and she started practicing Kundalini Yoga in 2014 (late 20s) following guidance from 3HO's website on Kriyas, meditations and doing many 40 days practices with them. Through this she quit drinking alcohol and focused on getting on the mat everyday rather than nursing a hangover. Alice continued to practice Kundalini Yoga with teachers on Youtube, at the end of 2016 after switching to health care and doing Radiant Body Kriya for 40 days she realised the reality of the destructive relationship she was in with her partner of nine years, left and returned home. Alice went on to study Kundalini Yoga Level 1 at Sahej TT, in the UK with Hari Har Kaur and Sat Siri Singh in 2017. following a calling to finally teach Yoga after years of practice and styles (Hatha in teens, Bikram in early 20s), here she got given the name Ajeet Amrita Kaur. Through the training Alice/Ajeet fell in love with the Sikh Dharma and went to Khalsa Camp to discover it's depth, Alice/Ajeet went on to learn and embrace Sikhi from more Sikh camps, was blessed with Amrit in 2018 and given the name Taran Kaur, then legally changed it to Taranjeet-Kaur to honour a Kundalini background, ironically she has always shortened it to Taran. Taran (now 31) is navigating married life, mother to one daughter named Satnaam Kaur Evie. Narangkar is an artist and advocate for 3HO second generation adults. She lives in Oregon with her husband and two cats. Narangkar was born and raised in 3HO in the 70's. Her parents are the Gurujohns who headed the Hartford CT ashram in the 70's & 80's. She a big extended family in 3HO as well: 2 aunts & uncles, one set of grandparents, 5 cousins plus 1 aunt born in 3ho. And 2 sisters. Narangkar & her big sister were child-swapped when they were 7, sent to live in Ram Das Puri to live with strangers. In 1983 they got sent to India for boarding school first to GNFC School, and then GRD Academy, and also attended New Mexico Military Institute (which was a short-lived US-based school “program” for 3HO kids). Narangkar left around 18 or 19. In 2008 she started talking about her life growing up in 3HO through the blog rishiknots– advocating for the openness and truth about the abuse we children experienced. The goal is for people to better understand how any seemingly innocuous 'seeker' culture can lead toward totalitarian and abusive environments that can cause serious and lasting harm. Today's guest is Guruatma Khalsa, now Laurel, has been in 3HO since 1978 until 2020. A native Chicago girl, just stepped into her 69th year, 43 of which were totally immersed in the 3HO/Sikh Dharma Community. She attended her first KY class in Madison, Wisconsin in 1978 and received her spiritual name in March of '79. For a short while she lived in the Des Moines, Iowa country ashram where she met her future (first) husband. They attended Summer Solstice together and she was invited to come live in Houston TX to be in charge of the Children's Program ...because they heard, "she's good with children". In 1984 Laurel married SatKartar Singh and they've been together now for 37 years. Her life-long challenge with a serious, rare and relapsing autoimmune disease, ended up leading her to specializing in yoga modifications and Chair Yoga for Seniors as well as to physically/mentally-challenged people at the City of Houston Adaptive Recreation Center. In May of 2020, while in the throws of launching her newly-renovated website yogictools.com and self-published book, "Stop & Feel it - One woman's extraordinary path of healing", she was shattered awake to the real truth of the horrible abuses of YB. After participating in the “Listening calls”, reading the AOB report in August 2020, as well as the last year of processing and reflection. Shes's been blown wide open to the real truth. She's since halted all business sales and teaching and she's attempting to reconcile the mess of it all the best she can. She's since renounced her connection with 3HO and Sikh Dharma and relinquished her Minister license as well. Uncomfortable Conversations Podcast The Untold Stories of the 3HO Kundalini Yoga Community
Today's guest is Porter Singer (aka Sirgun Kaur) Porter Singer took her first Kundalini Yoga class at the Golden Bridge in Hollywood, CA in 2009. Drawn to the allure of this space and (mainly) the music they played, she signed up for a children's teacher training program that same day. It was in that training she met a fellow musician who invited her to be part of the Summer Solstice sound team, in June 2010. At Solstice, she learned about the month-long Aquarian teacher training at the Española ashram in August, which she ended up taking that year too. Upon returning from this 1-month intensive, she felt her identity slowly morph, adopting her spiritual name completely and wearing a head covering any time she went out. Propelled by what she believed to be positive changes in her life, she decided to skip Christmas with the family that year in favor of attending Winter Solstice. There, she reunited with two men from the Summer Solstice Sound Team who would launch her further along her 3HO path. At Summer Solstice 2011, she married Harimander Singh and also released her first mantra album "The Music Within" with Sat Darshan Singh. This album contained the single “Bliss”, which would become the soundtrack for a Yogi Bhajan slide show entitled “Facets of the Master”— played at every White Tantric Yoga event in the world. Things seemed to be evolving "magically", and in 2013, after the birth of her first son, she released her second album. Postpartum depression was really her first clue that kundalini yoga, or “Yogi Bhajan”, might not have, or be, the answer to everything. She started to seek alternate solutions to wellness. The more she researched and branched out, the more confining her life started to feel. And in 2019, she finally made the decision to separate from her husband and move from the Phoenix ashram community. She now lives in Washington state with her two boys and her new partner. Shabd has been someone who I've been following for a while and inspired me to start my own podcast, so it was great to get to know a bit more about him and I cannot thank him enough for taking the time out to talk. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ ★ Buy this podcast a coffee ★ In this episode, we get to know a bit more about Shabd and his upbringing near Washington DC in Northern Virginia, amongst the 3HO community, his parents, who are both converts to Sikhi through 3HO, his background including his mixture of Jewish, Basque and Parisian ancestry, his attendance at Miri-Piri academy in Punjab, his further education, a period of change in his life more recently and his involvement in politics and how it took him further then he could have imagined. Did you know his mum travelled overland through Afghanistan to reach India in the 1970s? We continue and talk about how Shabd spends some of his spare time focusing on his own podcast – The One: Intersection of Sikhi/Sikh Affairs and Left/Progressive politics. How Sikhi is more than a religion, a book called the “Jakarta Method” which helps to map the American backing of the Indonesian death squads of the 1960s (resulting in the death of over a million people) and how this was part of the CIA's broader project of extinguishing the left wherever it was. Those who doubt socialism and use a lack of historical examples sometimes miss that since inception socialism has been aggressively attacked and undermined by the USA and Western powers & specifically undermined. Can Sikhs be part of a modern day military? How WWI and WII are not unrelated or disconnected from colonialism and the purpose of modern militaries. The tokenisation of Sikhs, the concept of langar and the human right of food security, the relationship of colonialism, capitalism and white supremacy. Malcolm X, truly questioning the system, the Khalsa mindset, the acceptance of death, learning and teaching and how Shabd tries to use this to keep grounded when involved in politics. We then dive into Shabd's upbringing as a Sikh, experience of the 3HO community and the cult, criminal activities and systems of abuse controlled by Yogi Bhajan. Shabd outlines his own personal journey and the importance of Kashi House's accessible production of pre-colonial Sikh history that was particularly helpful. Amongst other things, we round off the episode focusing on the 3HO community today, the entities and community of 3HO and why it is important to identify and change the systems around us. We spoke about so much more than that. More importantly, I learnt so much and thoroughly enjoyed getting to spend time talking to Shabd Singh. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
After four successful years of working on TV shows and films in New York City, Jules Hartley thought it would be a good idea for her to move to LA. In this episode I'm speaking with Actress/Medical Student Jules Hartley about how she is processing all of the information coming out of the Kundalini Yoga and 3HO communities. For some background on why we are having this conversation, you can listen to the episodes I've done with Matthew Remski, GuruGanesha, and Nadine Stellavota Brown. This is the video Jules I refer to in the beginning, that Jules made as a response to the "Shit __(insert group here)__ Say" craze that was going on a few years ago on YouTube: https://youtu.be/zHzM9p8vWowA quote Jules shared with me after our conversation:“Grief, I've learned, is really just love. It's all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.” -Jamie Anderson ------------------------ABOUT YOUR HOST:Porter Singer (formerly known as "Sirgun Kaur") is a spiritually-inclined music-maker and personal coach. In this episode of the podcast, I am speaking with Nadine Stellavato Brown, a graphic designer living in Washington state. Nadine grew up in 3HO, a community created by Yogi Bhajan and his followers. She speaks about the trauma she experienced being sent away from her parents at 2 years of age, being underfed and abused in India, being groped by Yogi Bhajan as a young woman, and her eventual decision to "take off her turban" and leave the organization. I am so honored to have her share her story on the podcast, and lend her voice to a chorus of truth coming forth from this community.Nadine's Written Testimonial:"I’m Nadine (Hari Kaur) the daughter of Richard Lasser (MSS Baba Singh) and Andrea Opalenik (SS Krishan Kaur). This is my story. At two years old my parents became Sikhs. The same year I was sent to live in the D.C. Ashram. I lived in various Ashrams and was part of the first kids sent to India from ages 2-16. This alone is riddled with so much anguish and grief in my life and yet was not the worst. At 16 I insisted I move home - and attended a western school. In 1990 I graduated high school and was asked by the Yogi Ji (SSS) to take a year off to work at the Secretariat. All I really wanted at the time was to go to college, to spread my wings. I knew at a young age Sikhism was not for me. Yet, I dutifully listened to the master my parents picked.I was told to work under MSS Nirinjan Kaur, one of his secretaries. She immediately starts to “groom” me. She would frequently ask, “If SSS asked you to work full time as a secretary, would you consider not going to college?”One of my many duties was to “clean his room” and set it up for sleeping. They were clear with me who took care of him at night with the implication I could be called to do the same soon.——Many nights I would be with SSS and his “Entourage” at Dr Allen’s house. One night he called my father and me into the back room. He started to yell at me, that I was a slut, was I even a virgin? He said that a kid I grew up with, told him I was a flirt. And yogi did not believe my answers. I was devastated.A second time, again at Dr. Allen’s house, the yogi again called my father and me into the back room. This time to compliment a certain dress I had on. He told me the dress was “sexy” and I was to only wear that style from then on, he proceeded to push money into my hand to buy more. Finally, in the late fall of 1990, I was at Dr. Allen’s cleaning SSSs room. He came across me. He made me stand up, asked me to twirl around, then he proceeded to put both of his hand on my breast, he squeezed them. He turned me around and did the same to my butt. I was scared, we were alone. I was mortified. He said, “You are almost ready, and turning out very nicely.”As soon as I could I ran home.I told my dad what happened. That I would never go back. Because he had been in the room the previous two encounters, he believed me.But it did not end there. When the SSS found out I would not got back, he asked my parents to disown me. He harassed me, he harassed my parents. He got kids I grew up with to call me, ask me not to go.In December of 1990 we all took off our turbans. You have to understand my dad was the first student to put on a turban. He was devoted he and the community never thought this would happen. Now everyone knows, he stood by his daughter.And.... I was lucky, I still had my family. I not only had my mother and father, but I also had and still have my lovely god-parents Sat Shakti Singh and Andrea Khalsa (Sat Shakti Kaur) and Akasha Richmond, who was and still is my saving grace. There are so many who never had that support.I believe all the stories, I respect all those who share and those who cannot. The pain and shame are real."------------------------ABOUT YOUR HOST:Porter Singer (formerly known as "Sirgun Kaur") is a spiritually-inclined music-maker and personal coach. GuruGanesha is my guest in this episode and we are talking more about 3HO culture within the context of the abuse stories coming to light around Yogi Bhajan--the "spiritual teacher" who founded what we know as "Kundalini Yoga". GuruGanesha, a child of the ‘60s, grew up in a world where social expression and musical boundaries were confined to a very rigid set of rules that the 1950’s America dictated. Then one day that all changed: It was in 1964 that the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time, and the world was never the same. He knew right away what his life long calling would be and then set out across the country armed with a guitar and a vision to touch people’s souls with sound and love. For more info: https://www.guruganeshaband.com/FULL LETTER FROM SAT PAVAN (one of the many women who have come forth to share their stories of being abused by Yogi Bhajan): I am one of the victims. I did not say anything for 28 years because I thought it was a "test". I thought having me watch porn three nights a week when I was 17 was really testing me to not be so innocent as he always said I was. I thought when I was alone with him at night in his room for night duty when I was 18 and he asked me to get in bed with him and make out with him and that all his "wives" do this it was a test. As I shook, terrified, as my heart beat out of my chest as tears burned my eyes and I repeatedly said no it was a test and when I left his room I thought if I told anyone he would be destroyed. I couldn't believe he trusted me with this secret. He offered me money, shopping sprees, fancy trips. I turned it down telling him I just wanted to serve the Guru. I thought he was a holy man, a Sikh of the Guru and if I said anything all the good he had done would be destroyed so I hid it. I stuffed it away. It haunted me for years. I told myself that it was an isolated incident and nothing happened. On the day before my wedding, asking for his Blessing he refused to give it saying I betrayed him in choosing Sarib and I could have had him. I remained loyal, I danced at events, I traveled and played Kirtan and even as he tormented me for years and pressured Sarib and I to not go to school, to work in the businesses and not do anything else, I said to myself he has our best interests in mind. I validate the women. I am one. I stayed. I wanted to serve the mission. What mission I ask now? I was angry for so long feeling after all of this he did not keep his promises that Sarib and I would always be taken care of. I directed this anger at every one else, but not him. To find out from other friends that he did similar things to them, but they left because they couldn't separate him from being a Sikh and their loyalty to be a Sikh was not strong. They are not crazy. This was not ok. It took Sarib asking me a question two weeks ago if I would be ok with these events happening to Jivan Jot, who is the same age as I was. It woke me from denial. No! I saw everything clear in that moment. Sarib has known these things for years but has patiently waited for and hoped I would realize what was done to me, how he continued to abuse me for marrying Sarib, disparaging Sarib to me, because I was the one who got away, but was still around in the community. And still I did not want to destroy people's lives. One of my friends said the reason she did not come forward was because she thought no one would believe her. I did not come forward because I thought everyone would believe me and the weight of hurting so many people weighed on me. I cannot hide. I cannot keep silent. I am a Sikh. He does not get that. I will dance, I will play Kirtan, I will hold my head up. I am the daughter of Guru Gobind Singh. I am part of 25 million strong. I am a survivor of mental, emotional, psychological and sexual abuse. He owns that abuse.------------------------ABOUT YOUR HOST:Porter Singer (formerly known as "Sirgun Kaur") is a spiritually-inclined music-maker and personal coach. In this second episode of the conscious communication series, we focus on the power of listening. We often are too hung up on our own agendas instead of really listening to others. When we harness the power of listening to others, to our own words and thoughts, and our intuition, we inform and connect to our world. When we listen deeply, sunni-ali in gurmukhi, we can be one step ahead of the moment. As Yogi Bhajan says, listening is your greatest power, "When some of you stop listening, you don’t want to listen. That is the time when you make the greatest mistake of your life because your constitution, your construction, your building, your faculty, your power is in listening."Mentioned in this episode:Some meditations that increase your connection to your intuition that I have found to be very powerful are Kirtan Kriya (which I talked about extensively in episode 3), Sodarshan Chakra Kriya, Long Ek Ong Kars, and so many more! You'll find so many kriyas and meditations that increase your intuitive power in the featured kundalini kriyas from 3HO, especially those under the section "The Spirit".Check out this beautiful live version of Sun-iai by Snatam with Ajeet.Learn more about Sun-iai, the 8th Pauri of Japji.Yogi Bhajan on listening. Satmitar Khalsa, Sikh Tradition Wednesday, June 6, 2018 Pay What You Can, suggested value $10 For the month of June, the Rothko Chapel presented a meditation in the Sikh tradition led by Satmitar Khalsa. We explored Guru Nanak's Mul Mantra, the origin, the root, of all Sikh teachings. When chanted, or preferably sung repeatedly, this mystical mantra provides a practical approach to achieving a stable, elevated Unity consciousness. The presentation included: light history and story telling, brief intellectual review of the mantra, singing/chanting the mantra for personal experience, meditation/contemplation in brief silence and time for questions. About the presenter: Satmitar Khalsa, a native Houstonian, became a certified Kundlini Yoga teacher in Portland, OR in the late 1990’s. By 2001, she began working for Yogi Bhajan in Espanola, NM. For 11 years, she lived in a spiritual community and served in the non-profits established and managed by Yogi Bhajan. Some of her duties included: Director of 3HO’s NGO/Representative to the United Nations, Director of International Peace Prayer Day and the Peace Cereal Grant Philanthropy, Director of Community and Public Relations, President and Vice President of Interfaith LEAP (a local faith based nonprofit) and other positions along the way. Recently, she created an eco-friendly design company and became a consultant for doTerra Essential Oils. Satmitar offers a transformational approach to teaching. She focuses a great deal on the breath, naad yoga (chanting) and meditation. She is grateful to return to her Texan roots and become fast friends with the unique and beloved Kundalini Yoga community in Houston. Satmitar means “True Friend.” About the series: Since September 2005, on the first Wednesday of each month from 12-1pm, the Rothko Chapel hosts a meditation or contemplative practice focusing on a different spiritual or faith tradition featuring teachers and religious leaders from throughout the greater Houston community. The Twelve Moments: Experiencing Spiritual and Faith Traditions series provides opportunities for visitors to learn more about a specific spiritual or faith tradition, and experience a related meditation or contemplative practice, such as prayer, chanting, etc.
