In this episode, we talk with Tony Boobier, a consultant, mentor, author and advisor with a specialisation with AI and financial services. Tony delves into hype surrounding AI's role in everyday life. He discusses the fear-driven perceptions of data-driven decisions, pondering the motives behind the hype, and its influence on society's view of AI. The episode also explores the practical applications of Generative AI in understanding vast amounts of data. From Customer Satisfaction to Risk Management, we talk through AI's current efficiency and areas that still need improvement and emphasise the need for organisations to integrate AI sustainably, with focus on Stakeholder Management. Join us and gain valuable insights from this thought leader who provides an objective perspective on the evolving AI landscape.3 Takeaways:The overhype of AI's role in everyday lifeMaking sense of all the data through generative AI for human understanding What AI can do for us today efficiently and where it still needs improvement Key Quotes: “You have to ask yourself, why all the hype? You know, who is driving all this hype? Of course, there's a lot of fear around the whole topic. People kind of envisage a world of data driven decisions as being very dystopian really. They're frightened by what they've seen in 1984 and what they learned from Hollywood, and there is an element of that, of course. But a lot of the hype particularly has been driven, I think, by people with a vested interest. Particularly large organisations who are trying to drive stockholder value. Small organisations that are trying to establish a niche in the market. And maybe also, you know, dare I say it, the media who are keen to identify what is the buzzword of the moment. And AI seems to be one of those buzz words. And therefore, you know, put the expression AI into a title and it almost becomes clickbait, really.“I've found sometimes that smaller organisations particularly have a technical capability and they throw it to the wall and say, ‘you know, how can I make this work in a FSI industry or, or any other industry?' And that for me is looking through the wrong end of the telescope. Organisations need to focus on what's important to them. Customer retention, customer satisfaction, risk management, reduction of operational cost, and if AI and advanced technologies is the way that they do that, then all well and good, but, you know, don't view AI as being the panacea to all of that.”“Any data transition, any AI transition or whatever you wish to call it, needs to be part of an integrated sustainable program rather than something which is on the wish wishlist of an individual. So stakeholder management becomes absolutely critical. ““One of the joys, one of the pleasures of being an independent consultant, as I am now, is that you, you do have the ability to, to step back and be a little more objective perhaps than towing the corporate line and that I find very helpful.”Tony BoobierConsultant, Mentor, Author and Advisor on AI and Financial ServicesTony Boobier is a UK-based technology executive with over 40 years of international experience. I have used the term “versus” for many years, without ever looking it up in the dictionary. It is defined as “against (especially in sports and legal use)”; or “as opposed to; in contrast to.” So when we speak of Zen versus daily life or vice-versa, we imply that somehow the practice of Zen is necessarily set ”against” the other dimensions of life. This issue comes up frequently for experienced practitioners as well as rank newcomers. This segment will broach this subject and outline some of its parameters, which will be expanded in following episodes of UnMind. Everything is PracticeThe question often arises, after a person has been practicing zazen for some time, how, specifically, can we adapt some of the approaches and attitudes that we find on the cushion, to the rest of our day, off the cushion. Of course, this also comes up quite regularly with newcomers, to whom the standard reply is, “Don't worry about applying Zen to your life; just apply yourself to Zen meditation. It will apply itself to your life, in a natural way. In fact, if you do try to apply Zen to your life, you will probably screw it up.” However, Zen is not only for everyone, as Matsuoka Roshi would often say, it is also “Anyone, anywhere, anytime Zen.” But, as I mention in my first book, “The Original Frontier” the first of many excuses that most people cite for not practicing meditation is, “I don't have time.” To have yet one more demand on our schedules is too much of a burden, just another activity competing for our scarce resources. So the issue of integrating Zen practice into any and all aspects of everyday life becomes one of turning a perceived negative into a positive, converting a confrontational approach to one of collaboration and complementarity. From the perspective of Design thinking, this enterprise comes under the category of how to design your life in general, but particularly focusing on what we can glean from our Zen practice, finding ways to incorporate its skillful or expedient means (S. upaya) into our everyday life. This focus was prompted by the publisher of my monthly newsletter column, “DharmaByte,” who suggested commenting upon: Taking Zen off the cushion into daily lifeMaking space for practice in everyday lifeFinding a balance between dharma practice and sitting There are several sets of contrasts we may employ to structure the discussion, such as:- Lifestyle: Monastic versus Householder - Physical: Zazen versus the four Cardinal Postures- Biological: Meditative breathing versus everyday situations- Psychological: Shikantaza versus ordinary attention The comparison of monastic and householder lifestyles, for example, revolves around the common conception, or misconception, that it provides a contrast between the ideal and the practical, respectively. In other words, anything less than a monk-like existence is an undesirable compromise. Mythology surrounding the mysterious and mystical aura of the life of the monk or nun is pervasive in a culture in which its reality is exceedingly rare. How many of us actually opt for that alternative in real life, however compelling its fantasy? How many Zen followers are living an “as if” lifestyle, picturing themselves as monastics when, in reality, they are householders in monk's clothing? Note: Buddhism's historical attitude toward the householder-practitioner has always held that option in high regard, precisely because of the difficulty of maintaining balance in the everyday world of responsibilities and distractions. From the vantage point of those who have actually lived in a monastery and seen through its imaginary differences, life is mainly the same, on either side of the wall. In whatever path one chooses to walk, one will inevitably find that there are “circumstances beyond our control.” Further, we can extend the discussion to a more granular breakdown of time and action, such as:- Daypart: Morning; Afternoon; Evening; Nighttime (Routines)Daily: Meals; Shopping; Hygiene; Housekeeping; Livelihood; the Commute- Calendar Events: Weekly; Monthly; Seasonal; Annual (Weekend, Holiday, Vacation)- Time of Life: Infancy; Preteen; Adolescence; Young Adult; Adult; Family; Middle Age; Empty Nester; Pensioner, Retiree; Survivor; Extended Care; Hospice- Roles & Relationships: Child; Partner; Householder; Parent; Mentor; Caregiver; Leader; - Lifetime: Aging; Sickness; Death Aha – you see what I just did there? Sneaking in that quintessential Buddhist teaching, the Three Marks of dukkha, “suffering,” at the last moment, when your head was already going up and down in agreement. But after all, this whole question goes to the original teaching of the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, Buddha's prescription for carrying out the principles of Right Wisdom in the context of Right Conduct and Right Discipline. So perhaps our analysis will shed new light on the relevance and meaning of these ancient teachings in the context of today's more complex social realities. Speaking of social, other dimensions for the discussion open up:- Loved Ones & Partners; Family; Parents; Children; In-Laws; Friends; Colleagues; Associates; Strangers; Enemies- Home; Neighborhood; Village, Town, City; State; Country; International; Global - Media: Social; News; Infotainment; Literature- Technology: High, Middle & Low-tech; Home & Office; Personal & Social Beginning with the instructions for zazen inherited from Master Dogen's Fukanzazengi—Principles of Seated Meditation, we break them down into three areas of focus: posture, breath, and attention, or mind. - Posture: We can relate the upright, rigorous posture to other situations in which we “assume the posture” — at work, at rest, while driving in traffic, sitting or waiting in line, etc. Details of the posture, such as the fixed gaze, half-open eyes downcast, hands in the cosmic mudra, etc. can be resorted to in an instant. ‘Every minute Zen” becomes “Zen any minute.” - Breath: Consider the full breathing cycle of the natural breath, followed in zazen, with techniques of counting, etc. We can do this anytime, anywhere. - Attention: We can turn our attention to anything we wish, and away from distractions and annoyances. To our senses, for example: seeing, hearing, and feeling, altogether or independently, one at a time. - Bowing: We can practice an internal bow, with no outer signs visible, when feeling grateful, for example. Or when dealing with the “negative bodhisattvas” in our lives, bowing in their direction, thanking them for teaching us the Dharma, in a way that we do not particularly appreciate, but recognize it as the dharma, or truth, of this relationship, even though they are blissfully unaware of it. The “bad boss syndrome” is one salient example. These are just a few of the dimensions of everyday life where our practice-experience in Zen and zazen can have a halo effect on the difficulties that arise, and a positive effect on how we handle them. Managing difficult transitions, such as changing jobs, moving our home to another location, contemplating and going through divorce, as well as losing loved ones as we age, are all sources of additional stress, on top of the wear and tear of everyday aggravations. In Buddha's time, life was surely simpler, compared to the complexity of modern society. But of course the fundamental problems of life, described in his Four Noble Truths, were still the same as we find them today. Some things don't change. And unfortunately, with all our much-vaunted advances in science and technology, developed in the interim of two-and-a-half millennia, some things have only gotten worse. We will take these issues on one at a time, and hopefully develop some skillful means for dealing with them more effectively, efficiently, and compassionately. This introduction to the new series has amounted to a kind of survey of where we might go with this direction. If you have any suggestions for widening the scope please send them to my email address: taiunmelliston@gmail.com For more on Soto Zen, its meaning and application to our modern life and practice, please check out our online and in-person schedules, and register for my Master Class at www.aszc.org.

We need to slow down, and slowing down actually just means having some boundaries. –Amy MangueiraRecovering chaser of busy Amy Mangueira lost hearing in one ear before she slowed down enough to realize something was wrong. We talk about burnout, our need to slow down, and how to stop chasing busy (even if we want to be a great mom, make money, and follow our fitness goals.)You can still be driven and have boundaries. It means not letting clients run all over you, not letting them expect (or expecting yourself) to answer messages at all hours. You can go hard, but you also need space to slow down and rest or recover. The time doesn't have to even out, but the energy does.Sometimes we lose our identity and our confidence. We get so focused, so invested in some part of ourselves … mothering, our business … that we lose balance. We lose sight of our core values. We can have an epiphany about what's wrong or what's missing, but we need the actionable step. We talk through ways to make that change. We talk about: Taking time to assess what we really want and who we are nowGetting used to a slower pace and using joy as a metricLearning not to replace busy in one part of your life with busy in another part of your lifeMaking a list when you are stressed, seeing the patterns, and choosing an actionSetting boundaries to put yourself back in the driver's seat of your own lifeUsing delegation to be leaders to ourselvesBIORecently recognized by the NYC Journal as a Top Life Coach to watch out for in 2022, Amy Mangueira helps people all over the world live burnout-free by bringing clarity, direction, and positive habits into their lives by filling the gap between where they are now and where they want to be. A 4x entrepreneur with successful acquisitions under her belt, Amy has turned her focus to Humans First Coaching, a coaching network dedicated to guiding over 300 leaders in organizations on how to build healthy cultures, reduce burnout, take care of themselves, and put their employees first. In my book, Investopoly, I outlined 8 investing rules that if followed, will help you build wealth and avoid making costly mistakes. These 8 rules are evidenced-based which I have refined over the past 20+ years.Rule number one is; play the long game. Arguably, it's the most important rule because I've observed that this is the most common mistakes investors make i.e., they don't play the long game. Whilst this rule is simple to understand, its often very challenging to follow.Short term profit does not create long term valueWhich investment option would you prefer (you can only pick one)? Invest in an index (share) fund which will accumulate $500,000 of additional wealth over the next 10 years or follow a “stock tip” which will generate a $50,000 profit within 9 months?Unfortunately, many investors would pick the stock tip option. They might justify their decision by planning to invest in the long-term option after they have banked a quick profit, but they rarely do. Instead, they search for the next short-term hit. To many, making a quick profit feels less risky than waiting 10+ years for a much larger gain.Three reasons short-term opportunities are inferiorI recently came across an investment opportunity to complete a 4-townhouse development which was projected to generate between $460k to $550k in pre-tax profit (which equated to a return of between 15% and 18%). It may take 2 to 3 years to complete this development.Of course, an alternative to this investment is to purchase a high-quality, investment-grade property and hold it for the long term. This is a better option for 3 reasons (which is why I didn't pursue the property development).(1) Risk-adjusted returnsRisk refers to the chance that your actual returns will vary from your expected returns i.e. that the investment doesn't achieve what you expect. Low risk investments produce very predictable returns, such as term deposits – as the return is virtually guaranteed. An investment's volatility rate is a good measure of its risk. You cannot compare two investing options without also comparing their inherent risk. This is called a risk-adjusted return.Over long periods of time, a high-quality investment property (house) should produce an average capital growth rate of at least 7% p.a. to 8% p.a. plus a net (after all expenses) rental yield of at least 1% p.a. I have previously calculated that Australian property has a historical volatility rate of circa 10%.Property developments can present several risks including cost blowouts, failure to achieve your desired sales price due to changes in the market, adverse changes in planning rules and so on. For the sake of this example, lets apply a volatility rate of 30% (for comparison, the share market's volatility rate is circa 20%).The Sharpe ratio is a commonly used methodology for calculating risk-adjusted returns. A higher Sharpe ratio is better as it means you receive a high return per unit of risk.§ Development option: Return of 15% to 18% p.a., risk of 30% = Sharpe ratio of 0.48 (range is 0.43 to 0.53)§ Long-term hold: Total return of 8% to 9% p.a., risk of 10% = Sharpe ratio of 0.65 (range is 0.60 to 0.70)This shows that the long-term hold option provides the investor with a higher return relative to its risk.(2) Perpetual returnsThe advantage of investing in assets that are expected to generate adequate returns over very long periods of time is that they benefit greatly from the power of compounding capital growth (as illustrated in this chart). The challenge with short-term investment opportunities is you must find another equally attractive investment opportunity soon after each investment completes. This can be challenging, risky and time consuming – it's very unlikely that you'll be able to find an endless amount of consistently profitable opportunities.(3) TaxesTaxes erode wealth. Delaying taxes (such as capital gains tax) allows you to reinvest pre-tax profits to benefit from a greater amount of compounding capital growth. This is a disadvantage of short-term investment opportunities, as you must pay tax (capital gains tax) when you exit the investment, leaving you less to reinvest.A long-term financial comparisonI have compared the two investment options above i.e. complete a $3 million property development every 3 years versus investing in a $3 million investment-grade property[1]. The chart below set out the after-tax (income and CGT) wealth in today's dollars. It is relatively even over the first decade until compounding growth kicks in. Over 30 years, the ‘buy and hold' option produces over 80% more wealth – over $3.2 million better off in today's dollars. The chart eloquently proves the benefit of playing the long game. There is one very important factor that this chart does not include. That is the amount of time these two options require. Buy and hold strategies are very ‘hands-off' and may require just a few hours each year, on average. However, property developments can be quite time intensive including project managing, dealing with inevitable challenges, planning rules, due-diligence, feasibility studies and so on.Why are people attracted to short-term profit? For some investors, banking a quick profit feels less risky. Some people don't want to wait 10 to 20 years to generate substantial equity. Earning a quick profit helps them feel like they are making progress.Another driver is impatience. Young investors are more susceptible to this because they have a small asset base and want to build it quickly whereas seasoned investors that have already achieved a level of financial security don't have the same sense of urgency.A quick profit won't change your lifeMaking $50,000 profit on a stock tip is a good outcome. It's nice but it's not going to change your life or retirement strategy. However, making the decision to invest in a high-quality, long-term investment will have a huge positive impact on your wealth, and your life. How to play the long game§ Ask yourself; what can you invest in today that will maximise investment returns over the next 10+ years. I find 10 years is long enough to force you to focus on sound fundamentals but short enough to conceptualise.§ Resist the temptation to make a quick buck. If you do want to pursue something that's short term, ensure it doesn't come at the cost of compromising/delaying your long-term strategy.§ Appreciate that investments that have the fundamentals to generate good returns over very long periods of time are far better than investments that generate a once-off profit.§ Ignore all short-term noise e.g. media, spruers, etc. It's designed to grab attention and sell advertising or product, not inform investment decisions.Wealth transfers to the investors with most patience and disciplineWe are all tempted by short term investment opportunities from time to time. That's why it's important to regularly remind ourselves that short-term investments do not generate long term value. It takes discipline to play the long game. Long term investments require a fair amount of delayed gratification and patience. It's not always easy. But all the evidence demonstrates that it's the most successful path to build wealth.[1] Returns are risk adjusted. In development scenario each development generates a pre-tax profit of $450k in today's dollars and after-tax profits are reinvested conservatively earning 6.5% p.a. (interestingly, the analysis was quite sensitive to this factor). Buy and hold strategy includes the after-tax cash flow cost of holding a $3 million property assuming interest rates of 5.5% p.a.

How often do we blame others for the chaos in our lives? Whether we like it or not, we are not inculpable children stuck in uncontrollable circumstances. It may be painful, but as adults, we should blame ourselves. From this realization comes empowerment as we take on the responsibility to lead ourselves to a better life, as Michael Unbroken will discuss here. My journey is not dissimilar to that of millions of people around the world. I grew up in chaos. My mother was a drug addict and alcoholic. My father abandoned me when I was barely 2 years old. My step-father was hyper abusive, and the kind of guy that you pray never enters your life. We grew up in The Mormon Church where I was molested by one of the Ward's mothers in the night. Since we were often homeless and the church partitioners took us in I wasn't allowed to say a word. By the time I was 11 I had been entirely stripped of my childhood. Between the beatings, belittlement, molestation, and homelessness I was ready to kill myself. By 12 I was using drugs daily. One of my brothers and I were adopted by our racist grandmother. Today I educate people around the world on the effects of trauma and how to get out of THE VORTEX, take their lives back, and become the person that they know they are. The most important piece of that puzzle is taking the first step.In this episode, Michael shares his extraordinary story of living life in survival mode and coming out empowered. He stresses the importance of realizing your responsibility and gives hard truths towards better awareness of the situations we face. Join us and listen in! Catherine Isaac is a best-selling romcom author who is also a master of bittersweet family stories, the sort of stories that break your heart at the same time as they make it soar. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and today Catherine talks about her uplifting stories that delight readers with their glorious French and Italian settings, while challenging them to accept that sometimes it takes darkness to see how we shine. We've got three copies of Catherine's latest book, Messy, Wonderful Us, to give away to three lucky readers. In this story, two friends fly to Italy, one in search of her mother's secret life, the other escaping a sudden separation. It's an uplifting tale of love, regret, and second chances, just what we need in this time of COVID-19. The draw closes on June 13 so don't miss out. Introducing Catherine Isaac But now here's Catherine. Hello Catherine and welcome to the show. It's so good to have you with us. Catherine Isaac: It's great to be here. Thank you for inviting me. Jenny Wheeler: You are in the UK and I'm in New Zealand and we're in a time of pandemic. Can you paint a bit of a picture for our listeners? How is social distancing affecting you? Catherine Isaac author Catherine Isaac: I think we're the same as most people. We're kind of muddling through really. I've got three children, aged 15, 11 and 7, so they're all at home doing their schoolwork here. Obviously trying to write in between printing out trigonometry questions is a bit more challenging than usual. But we're muddling through and we're lucky because we've got a garden and I know that doesn't apply to lots of people, so we're just tootling along really. We're fine. Coping with Covid Jenny Wheeler: I've spoken to quite a few people who say that even when they're in rather comfortable circumstances, this virus somehow does get into their heads and distracts them from their normal thinking processes. As a former newspaper editor, are you finding it harder to focus? Are you a bit distracted by wanting to jump into news cycles still? Catherine Isaac: I 've always been slightly obsessed with the news. I was a newspaper journalist for many years before I became an author and I am permanently glued to the news and obviously there isn't a great deal of good news around at the moment. In terms of being distracted, I've heard a lot of people say that actually. In my case, I tend to find that in times of crisis I find writing a kind of distraction in itself and I do like submerging. Writing as an escape I can think of many examples in my life if things have been going badly elsewhere, somehow the writing seems to go well in that case. Don't ask me why but I think it's a means of escape for me. Jenny Wheeler: Yes. You can lose yourself in it, perhaps. Catherine Isaac: Exactly. That's not to say that I always find writing easy or anything like that, or easy to focus on,
