Steve found "Dune Part II" underwhelming due to its slow pacing and lack speaking logic. Similarly, he criticized "The Acolyte" for its terrible story, terrible production, and terrible rewriting of the Jedi.
In this engaging podcast episode, the host, Mourad, welcomes guest Leo, a director at Blauw Films, a film studio with a unique approach to film production. Blauw Films is all about open source filmmaking, aiming to help aspiring filmmakers achieve their dreams without compromising artistic integrity while ensuring profitability. Leo shares his journey into filmmaking, emphasizing the power of collaborative and strategic thinking to break down barriers and make films as envisioned. He discusses the three key types of assets in filmmaking: digital, physical, and cultural. Digital assets offer short-term high-margin monetization opportunities, while cultural assets are the core of a film's lasting impact, with the potential for long-term value. The conversation delves into the significance of authenticity and evergreen thinking in creating projects that resonate with audiences, drawing parallels between art and business, and the importance of nurturing an artistic vision for sustainable success. The podcast explores how artists can monetize their projects effectively, emphasizing the need to preserve the cultural asset while capitalizing on various income streams. Leo shares a real-life example of how his space film project, "Syntactic Labyrinths," turned research and development into valuable products and revenue, building anticipation for the film's completion. The conversation concludes by highlighting the importance of nature as inspiration and the idea of "farming" ideas, ultimately connecting back to the profound impact and sustainability of art in our lives. The episode promises to be an insightful resource for artists and creators looking to navigate the intricacies of monetizing their projects while staying true to their vision. This week I have the joy of sharing a long-overdue discussion with legendary psychedelic media pioneer Ken Adams (Vimeo | LinkedIn), one of the first people I ever interviewed on record years before Future Fossils and whose influence on my own creative life cannot be overstated. Two of Ken's main claims to fame are the films he created in collaboration with Terence McKenna, namely Alien Dreamtime (mediocre fan upload, archived references to) and Imaginatrix (rental page). This June was the thirtieth anniversary of Alien Dreamtime's theatrical release, a major if initially under-appreciated moment in the history of digital film-making, and I had the good fortune to meet up with Ken here in Santa Fe for his commemorative screening at The Jean Coctea Cinema. What followed was an EPIC storytelling download about bold underground innovation told by one of the most soulful, thoughtful, heartfelt, humble, humorous, and generous people I know.✨ Support Future Fossils:• Become a patron on Substack, Patreon, and/or Bandcamp for MANY extras, including a members-only FB Group and private channels on our Discord Server!• Buy the show's soundtrack (recorded live at Psychedelic Science 2023) on Bandcamp.• Browse my art and buy original paintings and prints (or commission new work).• Dig my reading list at the Future Fossils Bookshop.org page!• Follow my music and awesome, eclectic playlists on Spotify.✨ Tip Jars:@futurefossils on Venmo • $manfredmacx on CashApp • @michaelgarfield on PayPal✨ Chapters, Summary, & Keywords provided by Podium.Page:(0:00:00) - Reminiscing on Psychedelic Underground and Filmmaking(0:10:07) - Ken's Childhood & Early Adulthood(0:25:04) - Screenings and Influence of Psychedelic Movie(0:30:06) - McKenna and Psychedelic Community Influence(0:35:24) - Nature, Doubt, Validation(0:44:23) - Late Night Studio Discovery and Reflection(0:49:30) - Non-Human Encounters and Embracing the Weird(0:57:17) - Encounters With Terence McKenna After His Passing(1:10:46) - Spiritual Experiences and the Need for Change(1:18:51) - Life, Legacy, and Creative Expression ReflectionsJoin me as I host Ken Adams, an experimental filmmaker, documentarian, and psychedelic explorer. We journey through his life from his childhood in Louisiana, his graduate studies in sociology and anthropology, to his discovery of LSD, and his eventual meeting with Terence McKenna. Ken shares his experiences with psychedelics and computers, and we discuss the impact these have had on his life and work. He provides insight into the psychedelic world in San Francisco, shedding light on the risks people took to make psychedelia accessible. This episode offers a fascinating look into the world of psychedelic filmmaking, with Ken Adams sharing how he created a business model from showcasing his experimental film. From the Adobe theater in Austin to the Roxy in San Francisco, Ken reveals how his work was embraced in the psychedelic space. He further explores the influence of Terence McKenna, discussing how Terence navigated the expectations of being a celebrity, his thoughts on psychedelics, and his ability to unite the psychedelic community. Finally, we examine Ken's experiences with non-human entities in altered states of consciousness, as well as his ideas on serving the common good. Ken shares his unusual encounters and his belief in the need for imaginative solutions to the issues facing the planet. We also reflect on the sadness and loneliness of the digital era, and discuss how digital arts are changing our world. Shanawdithit, the last-known of the Indigenous Beothuk people from Newfoundland, was only about 28 years old when she died in St. John's in 1829. Now, students at the College of the North Atlantic's Digital Filmmaking program in Stephenville are getting ready to tell her tragic story...and they want actors to help them do it. The film is called "The Last Beothuk." Auditions will begin soon, and filming will start in late May. Peter Buckle is an instructor with the program, and the CBC's David Newell reached him in Stephenville.

In this week's episode, I have an in-depth conversation with hip-hop Math edutainer Keziah Finney about her personal math journey, the founding of Lyrical Math, the power of hip-hop as a medium for Math pedagogy, and so much more! To learn more about Keziah's work, you can visit the Lyrical Math website at lyricalmath.com and follow her on Instagram & Twitter (@lyricalmath). BIO: Mrs. Finney was born in Chester, Pennsylvania and moved to New Castle, Delaware at a young age with her mother, father and four older brothers. She grew up in a musical family and spent years in her family church choir gaining her first experience sharing her voice through music in front of a large crowd. She loved teaching from a young age and knew she wanted to be a teacher since elementary school. Growing up with many siblings and cousins being rappers and music producers, she gravitated towards hip-hop music and performed as a rapper in many talent shows while growing up. In 1998, she graduated from William Penn High School. She completed her undergraduate degree in 2002 with a Bachelor's in Biology from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Upon graduation, she started her teaching career in Chester, Pennsylvania at Village Charter School. Diving into her love of teaching , she returned to college and received her Master's of Education from Wilmington University. Over the past 18 years, she has taught middle school math and science and various middle schools in Chester, Pennsylvania and in Wilmington, New Castle and Hockessin, Delaware. As an artist and educator, Mrs. Finney noticed early on in her teaching career how quickly students memorized and recited hip-hop songs throughout the school day. While her students walked in the hallways, socialized in the school cafeteria or completed class work, she would find many of them rapping popular hip-hop songs or even creating their own lyrics. These moments led to reflection on her own similar experiences with hip-hop when she attended grade school. When introducing math lessons to her class in the traditional fashion, she would see a disconnect in her students. Eager to have her students engaged in the lesson as well as increase their level of comprehension, Mrs. Finney started creating lyrics that explained the math content she was hired to teach. When she shared the lesson lyrically, her students lit up! Their excitement for learning increased and so did their level of comprehension. Administrators, teachers, parents, students and community members expressed their appreciation for Mrs. Finney's ability to tailor the curriculum to meet the needs of her students. This made for a more rewarding and memorable classroom experience. Mrs. Finney expanded her ability to teach more students through music when she met her husband, James Finney. With his undergraduate degree in Studio Production and Digital Filmmaking and Master's in Applied Technology in Education, Mr. and Mr. Finney combined their passion for education and disciplines to create Lyrical Math. With this edutainment program, Mrs. Finney created two CDs that teach basic math skills through hip-hop music. With the support of her husband and four children, Mrs. Finney aspires to help students all over the world become more engaged and interested in math and science by teaching through educational hip-hop music.

This week, we chat with Whitney Skauge, director of the short documentary The Beauty President, premiering at SXSW this week. The Beauty President asks the question, “If a bad actor can be president, why not a good drag queen?” In 1992, Joan Jett Blakk made a historic bid for the White House as an openly queer write-in candidate. Today, Terence Smith, the man behind the persona, reflects back on his place in gay rights history at the height of the AIDS crisis. By making this film, Whitney's vision is to fill in one of the many gaps in the oral history of queer America. Though popular history has often swept the triumphs of gay heroes under the rug, documentary film helps us bring these incredible stories back into the light of day. As a black queer person, Whiney understands how imperative it is to share perspectives from underrepresented communities. Whitney Skauge is an award-winning filmmaker dedicated to diverse storytelling and representation. Their films act as an extension of social and political activism with hopes of helping audiences understand themselves and the world around them better. Having worked at Breakwater Studios, Women In Film, Sundance Institute, and the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, their career has demonstrated a consistent commitment to the art of independent filmmaking. They received their B.F.A. in Digital Filmmaking from the University of Montana. We loved chatting with Whitney about the perseverance needed to make the film, the process, and what they hope people will come away with after watching the film. Enjoy!

Joining Griffin and David this week is special guest J.D. Amato to discuss the behind-the-scenes making of this film, including, a featurette entitled: “Star Wars State Of The Art: The Pre-Visualization Of Episode II” (found in the initial DVD release of Attack of the Clones.) Together, they examine the process of pre-visualization, why the CGI technology of its time compared even with today’s still makes this film ambitious, the uncanny valley and reasons why most of the special effects didn’t enhance or contribute to the overall story. Though, George tried his best, why did Lucas put himself into a situation where no one could help him or this movie? Why did actors perform to no one in a blue room? Was there ever even a bigger picture or cohesive plan? Find out these answers and more!
Director Paul Bright (@PaulBrightFilms on twitter) sits down with host Craig Price to discuss digital filmmaking. Comicpalooza premiered Paul's latest film "Long Term Parking" on May 23rd. Little did he suspect that his trip to Houston would force him to cross paths with Craig! The two discuss creating films for the small, small screen (phones and tablets), how you think about shooting films with unlimited recording capabilities, auditioning actors a foot away from a cell phone camera and some of the pros and cons of the available distribution outlets for independent filmmakers. They also discuss how the new, smaller high definition cameras allow for more shot flexibility and how actors act knowing that they can do unlimited takes (in theory) without having to start the scene all over. Also, Craig blatantly tries to get cast in Paul's next film. Pathetic, really. It's a great discussion for anyone interested in making their own independent films. You can find Paul and his movies at http://PaulBrightFilms.com and check out his vlog Paul's Tub Talk on Youtube.
I sit down with playwright and filmmiaker Joyce Storey to talk about her website Monologues To Go, Monologs Good and terrible, Digital Filmmaking and what makes a good story, festivals, and Prince Edward Island

As promised just (barely) in time for Halloween...I'm giving away my personal recipe for creating really cheap, easy and realistic bullet hole FX. This is an early sneak preview from the upcoming narrative filmmaking book, "The Down and Dirty DV Filmmaking Guide", dropping from Focal Press next winter. With a little modification, pretty much this same technique can be used to create all kinds of realistic looking wounds...gashes, cuts, open sores, flesh wounds, deep scrapes, festering boils, warts, vampire bites, werewolf wounds, and mongoose scratches...that's all I can think of at the moment, but you can break out the liquid latex and make-up and use your own imagination. Happy Halloween everybody!
Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Christine Evangelista for UBATV.com's filmmaking show, "The Reel" - and here it is. You can see more episodes of "The Reel" at UBATV.com.
Digging through the vast D&D vaults (a shelf and bag full of poorly labeled DV tapes) I discovered a long forgotten episode from NAB 2007 that I shot but never got around to editing. There are a few cool tools featured here - The Red One Camera, Losmandy SpiderDolly, and the Wrist Shot amongst others. Enjoy.
In episode # 12, Stacey Parks, author of "The Insiders Guide to Independent Film Distribution" and founder of the indie distribution website, FilmSpecific.com, shares her "4 Key Aspects to a Distributable Film".
Part 2 of 2 2 years ago, I interviewed filmmaker, Pete Chatmon, while he was in the process of raising the money for his first feature film, "Premium". He raised all the money and got his film on Starz and Showtime. Fundraising for a feature film is not just the math of putting together numbers on paper. It's also the business, social and psychological challenges of convincing people (including yourself) that you have a solid plan and the ability to execute that plan to it's fullest possibility. Not only did Pete manage to successfully raise the money for his first feature, "Premium", he got distribution and ended up on Showtime, Starz and with DVD's sold by major retailers. Here are Pete's tips for how you can get your head right to do the same.

Its 296 pages are chock-a-block with very useful illustrations. But the clincher seem to be the DVD which is all part of the package.” -British Film Magazine
