Theater and art gallery opens in Beacon Vet/Rep, the theater company that moved from Cornwall to Beacon last year and is transforming the former bank building at 139 Main St. into a showcase for talented veterans and their family members, has been rechristened Savage Wonder. This weekend (May 9-10) kicks off the institution's inaugural season of productions in The Parlor, a 50-seat room. Most of the staged readings will be presented every Saturday for a month, although exceptions include the sold-out debut tonight (May 9) of The Bald Soprano, by Eugene Ionesco, three future dates and a six-week run of World War II veteran Noel Coward's scandalous 1920s comedy, Fallen Angels. All the performers are members of the Actors' Equity union, which includes Broadway-caliber professional actors and stage managers. On Saturday (May 10), Savage Wonder will unveil Savage Wonderground, a 4,000-square-foot basement art gallery, and The Grape Rebellion, a wine and dessert bar. The first exhibit is Radical Fun, curated by gallery director Jeannie Freilich, who commutes from New York City. It runs through July 6. A 60-seat theater, named The Kristofferson (after Kris, who turned down a position teaching literature at West Point, spurned the Army to write country songs and earned the wrath of his military family) is scheduled to open next year. A second bar and another main stage with 125 seats is planned for 2027. "One reason for the rebranding is that every time I spoke to groups about Vet/Rep, I had to make it clear that we're not providing art therapy - we rarely do war stories and not everyone onstage is a veteran," says Chris Meyer, founder and artistic director. "We're also going beyond theater by adding the art center and wine component." Meyer came up with Savage Wonder during a deployment in New Mexico (he served in the Army for 14 years after 9-11): "It's where the warrior and artist intersect." The revamped logo, which resembles a paint, wine or blood splotch, is a Rorschach test. "Our brand's spirit animal is the octopus, which encapsulates what the Savage Wonder thought experiment is about: intimate, absurd, whimsical and jarring." To expand the talent pool and repertoire, immediate family members of veterans may act onstage, direct a play or contribute a script. The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde (coming in June), makes the cut because the playwright's son served in the British military. Beyond the veteran thread, many of the season's themes convey a farcical sensibility. The absurdist Bald Soprano, from 1950, contains several exchanges with nonsensical dialogue. Nicolay Gogol's Inspector General, scheduled for October, premiered in 1836 and satirizes Russian bureaucracy. The son of actors, Meyers' flair for the dramatic enhances the staged readings. At the launch party on May 3, a hubbub interrupted his presentation and startled the audience. It turned out to be two actors shaking things up with a short performance set in a VA hospital waiting room to nowhere. "We're not sitting around or using music stands, we can stage the hell out of our readings," says Meyer. "We've had five-minute fight scenes; people enter through a window or trip and fall into the wall. Anything can happen." Savage Wonder is located at 139 Main St. in Beacon. The Bald Soprano will be performed at 7 p.m. on May 17, May 24 and May 31; tickets are $25 at savagewonder.org. Radical Fun will open at The Savage Wonderground on Saturday (May 10) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

With over 15 years experience at the heart of arts and culture, Patrick joined Sydney Fringe in 2024.

Inspired by Eugene Ionesco's Rhinoceros, an absurdist play about the invasion by a crash of rhinos (read: fascism), my Skool Daze is an absurdist tragicomedy about teachers and students getting distracted by all sorts of things, effectively putting blinders on to a real threat, in this case, an armed intruder (or two) in the school. Daze opens with a faculty meeting wherein administrators head a workshop on protocol for the event of an armed intruder. Things do not quite go as planned in the simulation and the faculty are not quite as attentive as they should be and are easily distracted by this and that. In the midst of their distraction, they see an actual shooter through the halls of the building, leading to at least one administrator getting shot! No, for realz! This episode is the surreal sequel to Act I of Skool Dayz, in which the previous events - an intruder or two runnning through the school hallways and the faculty's slow reaction to it and to their own administrator getting shot - lead to their inevitable (?) conclusion. In this episode you will find out who the intruders are, why they have intruded, and how the administrators, faculty and students in the building react to this menacing breach. Tune in and embrace the strange and unsettling conclusion, Act II, of Skool Dayz.

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Bookwaves Suzy McKee Charnas, in the 1980s. Suzy McKee Charnas (1939-2023), in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded over Halloween Weekend, 1981 at the World Fantasy Convention in the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley. Suzy McKee Charnas, who died on January 2nd, 2023 at the age of 83, was a novelist and short story writer focusing on fantasy and science fiction. Over a career that began in 1974 with her first novel, Walk to the End of the World, she wrote eleven novels and several short stories, winning both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best short stories. She is best known for her tetralogy of novels, The Holdfast Chronicles, beginning with the aforementioned Walk to the End of the World and concluding with The Conquerer's Child in 1999. In 1981, she had just written three novels, focusing on feminist issues in a field that was still dominated by men. Her second novel, Motherlines, which featured no male characters at all, was decades ahead of its time. A lot has changed since 1981, and the interview also serves as a time capsule in terms of both questions and answers, and in regard to feminist writing, publishing and genre writing. She continued to work steadily after 1981, but she wrote no more novels after 1999, though short stories continued to be published. None of her works were adapted for television or film, though she did adapt The Vampire Tapestry for the stage in 2001. The interview aired once shortly after the recording, and was digitized, remastered and edited on January 4, 2023. Complete 29-minute interview.   Artwaves Richard Wolinsky and Frank Galati, 2019. Frank Galati (1943-2023), who died on January 2, 2023 at the age of 79, was a giant in American theatre. A long-time member of the legendary Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Frank Galati was winner of Tony Awards for the adaptation and direction of The Grapes of Wrath in 1990, was nominated for an Oscar for co-adapting The Accidental Tourist for the screen, and was the director of Ragtime and The Pirate Queen on Broadway. Frank Galati is also known for adapting several other works for stage and screen. Frank Galati was in the San Francisco Bay Area to direct a production of “Rhinoceros” by Eugene Ionesco at ACT's Geary Theatre, and it was in ACT's offices that this interview took place on May 22, 2019. “Rhinoceros” is considered to be one of the greatest works of political theatre of the absurd. Originally produced in the late 1950s, the play hearkens back to the origins of fascism and how propaganda infects the minds of citizens. At the end of the interview, Frank Galati discusses his upcoming project, a musical version of James Agee's “A Death in the Family,” with music and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, A Man of No Importance). The show, titled “Knoxville” made its world premiere at the Asolo Repertory Company in Sarasota Florida in April 2022, and an original cast album was released digitally in October and on disc in November, 2022. Frank Galati (1943-2023), who died on January 2, 2023 at the age of 79, was a giant in American theatre. A long-time member of the legendary Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Frank Galati was winner of Tony Awards for the adaptation and direction of The Grapes of Wrath in 1990, was nominated for an Oscar for co-adapting The Accidental Tourist for the screen, and was the director of Ragtime and The Pirate Queen on Broadway. Frank Galati is also known for adapting several other works for stage and screen. Frank Galati was in the San Francisco Bay Area to direct a production of “Rhinoceros” by Eugene Ionesco at ACT's Geary Theatre, and it was in ACT's offices that this interview took place on May 22, 2019. “Rhinoceros” is considered to be one of the greatest works of political theatre of the absurd. Originally produced in the late 1950s, the play hearkens back to the origins of fascism and how propaganda infects the minds of citizens. At the end of the interview, Frank Galati discusses his upcoming project, a musical version of James Agee's “A Death in the Family,” with music and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, A Man of No Importance). The show, titled “Knoxville” made its world premiere at the Asolo Repertory Company in Sarasota Florida in April 2022, and an original cast album was released digitally in October and on disc in November, 2022. Sheila Heti's new novel Pure Colour, a kind of fable about end times, is published on 15th February. Jaston Williams is an American humorist, playwright, actor, director, producer, essayist and novelist. He is best known as the co-author and co-actor of the Greater Tuna quartet of plays. Greater Tuna is the first in a series of four comedic plays (followed by A Tuna Christmas, Red, White and Tuna, and Tuna Does Vegas), are each set in the fictional town of Tuna, Texas, the "third-smallest" town in the state. In 1971, Williams left Texas Tech University and moved to San Antonio to begin his acting career, where he joined the "First Repertory Company in San Antonio." He gained footing in the industry with the Taos Magic Mirror Players and TransAct Theatre of Austin. Along the way, he collected material for volumes of plays, essays and other writings. One of his popular true-to-life stories featured in his one-man show, I'm Not Lying, is a counterculture experience involving Williams wearing a chicken suit and performing at a Renaissance Fair at Dennis Hopper's mansion in Taos. Williams' performances have played on and off Broadway at the Kennedy Center, the Edinburgh International Arts Festival, the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. and all over America. Jaston received the L.A. Dramalogue Award for both Greater Tuna and A Tuna Christmas. A Tuna Christmas was published in "Best Plays of 1995." For several years, he toured in Larry Shue's The Foreigner. He performed in The Fantasticks and directed the musical, Bad Girls Upset by The Truth. Jaston received the Texas Governor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts by a Native Texan, and has performed command performances at the White House on three occasions. He has appeared at the State Theatre in Eugene Ionesco's The Chairs and at Zachary Scott Theatre in Jay Preston Allen's Tru, for which he received the Austin Critics Table Award for Best Actor in a drama. He appeared at Zachary Scott Theatre in The Laramie Project. Awards and nominations In 2018, Williams received the national Marquee Award, a lifetime achievement award, from the League of Historic American Theatres. Williams has received five nominations for the Helen Hayes Award in Washington, D. C., the Los Angeles Drama-Logue Award for acting and writing, the San Francisco Bay Critics Award for acting and writing, He has also received the Distinguished Alumni Award at Texas Tech University (2015), the Texas Governor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts, and, along with Joe Sears, the first Paramount Theatre Marquee Walk of Fame Award. Jaston is the recipient of the 2013 Texas Medal of the Arts and has been inducted into the Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in Lubbock. ​ Jaston is the son of a West Texas farmer and a school teacher, (James P. Williams and Vivian Lindley), He was born in El Paso, Texas, and spent his first six years on a farm  between Valentine and Van Horn, Texas. His family moved to Olton, Texas, and then to  Crosbyton, where he graduated from Crosbyton High School. He attended San Jacinto College, Texas State University and Texas Tech University. Williams was married to his high school girlfriend, Larita Stephens from 1971 to1973, and they had one son, Patrick Shane Williams (b.May 9, 1971). Patrick died in an automobile accident on December 27, 1995.  Jaston's older brother, Corky Williams, was a cowboy poet, actor and writer. In an interview with the Washington Post, Williams reminisces about his late mother, "one of the toughest, funniest and occasionally meanest people I've ever known"; his brother, who "talks like Yosemite Sam"; his mother's best girlfriend, a pilot with emphysema who had to stop smoking for months every time she wanted to fly (something about the oxygen); and that lady's son,  a hairdresser who worked in the big city but regularly came back home and fixed all the women up with identical helmet hair ("you need it, what with that wind!"). In 2007, Williams married Dr. Kevin Mooney, a musicologist who teaches at Texas State University, and they have one son, Song Williams. “Here was a jazz musician who had never smoked weed, never been arrested,” Williams says of his husband, Kevin. “And I had never had a boyfriend who hadn't been on the Post Office wall.” But it worked out, and the two eventually adopted a 7-year-old Chinese boy with special needs. Song, 21, graduated from Lockhart (Texas) High School in 2019, lives with his fathers, and is the light of their lives. Williams says that they got the best child in China, out of millions.

Specialist at Christie's in the contemporary arts department with a focus in NFTs. He started working on NFTs in March with his intro to NFTs during the first Beeple @beeple sale. Getting into NFTs and bringing them to Christie'sHow did Noah first get into NFTs? "NFTs really found me." Before he was head of NFTs at Christie's, he was the head of online sales for contemporary art. He was in the office last January to see an IRL piece of art for an auction. His colleague, Megan Doyle, brought an NFT opportunity to his attention. She had been contacted by MakersPlace for a possible NFT consignment, and asked Noah if he would be open to putting an NFT in his sale. Noah barely knew about NFTs. All he really knew was that Beeple sold his NFT at Nifty Gateway for $6 million, and that NFTs are a new asset class running on a blockchain foundation. What drew Noah into NFTs, beyond the art, was the promise of decentralization and the things that blockchain can do.  "We are heading towards a future that will have a foundation in blockchain. You can either end up with the state run dystopian future or you can build one yourself." Noah wants to see a future where there is a decentralized metaverse that is owned by the people for the people. If he can help do that within Christie's, a 200+ year old company, that could be really significant. Bringing NFTs to Christie's In the first conversation Noah had with Christie's they mainly talked about cryptocurrency.  Noah knew that some of their top clients were into crypto. He believed that NFTs were the perfect opportunity to jump into the space. The fact that it was ephemeral wasn't daunting to them. Christie's has sold dinosaur bones. If they can create some kind of excitement around an auction, Christie's will find a way to make it work. "I am really grateful towards Christie's for lending me such a long leash." NFTs have been reliably profitable for Christie's. They are now approaching $120,000,000 in total volume for the year. It's going to be 5% of their turnover. For the first Beeple sale more than 90% of applicants were not previously known to Christie's. Although this was more the NFT community and Beeple's community, Noah will continue to set the stage for artist to showcase their work. How did Noah's college degree in English with a focus on Absurdist post war french theater play a roll in Noah's love for NFTs? The absurdity of selling an asset that doesn't physically exist was extremely attractive to him.  "I think a lot about the theater of the absurd in the context of NFTs. What really drew me in was how counterintuitive NFTs are to the standards of the 21st century contemporary art world." Noah never felt like he completely fit in. He was sort of put off by the pretentious vibes in contemporary art, and how people tend to take themselves too seriously. Eugene Ionesco's play, The Bald Soprano, plays a huge role in understanding Absurdism.  The story behind the play is that one day while Ionesco was learning French and English, he was reading the textbooks and thought it was absurd that they were trying to teach him family dynamics. This then lead him to believe that the foundation of language is super shaky and unreliable. In the play, The Bald Soprano, nothing makes sense. It is indebted to people that question the moral and aesthetic values, at the time, by way of absurdity. "Ionesco would love NFTs." NFTs and ArtWhat is the future of NFTs in the traditional art world?In the traditional art world, you will see a lot more adoption from contemporary artist who dabble on digital media.  The more mega blue chip galleries that jump into NFTs, the more inspired artist will be to take the leap. To understand and overcome that stigma of NFTs as a step below "intellectually speaking" what contemporary art normally is, is a very challenging medium to master. "As more artist embrace this, we will see really dynamic projects coming forward and new amazing 1 of 1 art work from amazing talented bluechip artist."  Right now people like Tom Sachs (@tom_sachs) and Damian Hirst (@hirst_official), are the only real Fine Artists from the blue chip world that have mastered this. They are playing by the rules of the NFT space, but they are speaking directly to a crypto native audience. However, there will be artist that enter the NFT world, play by the old rules and somehow succeed. It's going to be a difficult bridge to build and the needle has really only been threaded once successfully with Christie's auction of Andy Warhol NFTs with the Andy Warhol foundation. They tokenized digitally native works that Andy made for the amiga computer. Art Basel NFT prediction?There will be a base line of friction from two different worlds. That's good because those sparks is where you get something creative.  “There will be a lot of chatter around NFTs for sure.” Christies is collaborating with NFTnow during Art Basel to host an event. They have built a, 2400 square foot, space in a bank building and repurposed it as an art gallery. Superrare and Collector 33 will have a presence there. “To see all this art, in this environment, is going to be interesting because we haven't really nailed the exhibition component of NFTs yet.” They have learned a lot and they are going to be applying all of it in Miami. You need to correctly activate the immersive quality of some of these artworks. Christie's and OpenSea sale? So far all the NFT sales Noah has conducted at Christie's have been off-chain, and because they are off-chain it is hyper manual.  All of the movement of the tokens are analog and payment is pretty clumsy. "It's like we are operating in this new dimension, but we are still pushing the buttons and pulling the string from the old one." This is their first collab with Opensea, if it goes well there is no reason why Christie's should auction their NFTs off chain. There will still be a place for traditional auctions, like the Beeple (@beeple) one they recently sold. But, if they are selling an ether rock and they are marketing that to a crypto native audience they can't get away with off chain. When's Christies DAO? "The idea of a DAO is an incredible thing." As much as Noah is really fighting to push things forward. There are things he wants to be really careful with. Like building in the metaverse and thinking about airdrops. Regulation is going to catch up with us and until these unknown areas are become more defined. There's no reason for a corporation like Christie's to dive in the front. NFT space and ArtistsWhat was the process of promoting Beeple's sale on Discord? Noah wasn't really involved in the promotion of the first Beeple sale.  At the time he was going more of the traditional media route, and still learning about NFTs and crypto. "The first time I heard someone refer to Ethereum as ETH, I took a beat and I had no idea what that meant, I didn't know what it was. I bought my first Ethereum in April." Noah didn't join Discord until after the Beeple sale. Because he hasn't used social media in a long time, he was very cautious. Justin Aversano (@justinaversano) invited Noah into Cryptopunk's Discord channel to promote the sale of a Cryptopunk that Christie's was having in May. He felt like he didn't belong there. He felt like he was the corporate salesman. Now he has his ens name in his username. But it took the same push to get him on Twitter too. Noah was so scared, his username was "Noah the Poser". Secondary Sales in a world on Smart Contracts. The first big contemporary art auction took place in the 80s.  The artist themselves were at the auction, and they accosted the seller because he bought the photos for $1,000's and he was selling them for $10,000's. "There was an intense animosity at the moment between the artist and the collector because it felt like it was deeply unfair, and it is." There are certain places in Europe that already have a resale royalty, and California was really pushing for this too. Noah strongly believes that artist should absolutely have these royalties.  With NFTs and blockchain, the artist and the creator have complete control over this. "The blockchain doesn't care. What you tell it to do, it is going to execute it. It is never going to make a mistake"If you program it with protocols that are fair, those will be the rules forever. Right now is the time to make sure that these rules make sense, are fair, and are equitable. Artist should own their smart contract, and have their own independence so that they can never get duped. That kind of responsibility and independence is very admirable. It is the way forward. Manifold is behind a lot of artist's smart contracts. Their philosophy is that artist should own their own smart contract. Working with artists "I love artists. I like to make art when I am not working for Christie's." Noah used to only get involved with the collectors or estates, and rarely with artists. Unless they were complaining, which is reasonable.  When contemporary art comes to auction it is usually not under the best circumstances. There's an industry term referred to as the "three D's". Divorce, debt, and death are the three major driving forces that bring contemporary art to auction. You are starting from a place of negativity. Working with artists, however, is all about positivity.  Noah feels such an incredible bond with the artists, like Beeple. He's made art with Fewocious (@fewocious) and has had lunch with Joshua Davis (@JoshuaDavis). "I hang out with these guys and it just feels right." Before he felt weird and almost felt like the enemy. Now he feels like he is helping these artist tell their stories. "The NFT space is magical. Everything I felt frustrated with in the contemporary art world is not at play in this space." If you were stranded on an Island and you could only take one NFT from your collection or any collection, which would you take? From Noah's collection, he would take his CrypToadz or his Deadfella. From any collection, Noah would take CryptoPunk 4301. It's from the collection of Sov.eth. It's a wild white hair with VR and pink lipstick. Noah was glowing while he was talking about this.

On this week's deep dive, The Cultists Present Quentin Dupieux's ‘Rubber' (2010). Notoriously known as that movie where a tire gains psychokinetic powers and just enough sentience to go on a killing spree, this film often gets tragically mis-labeled as your standard B-rated monster movie horror romp. And yet, Rubber is anything but. Once and best described as ‘Samuel Beckett by way of Roger Corman,' from surface to core, "Rubber" is a modern staple of absurdist theater lovingly transposed to celluloid. Pulling from classical absurdist plays like Eugene Ionesco's The Chairs; enacting human-pawn replicas of the weirder particulate behaviorisms of quantum mechanics; and weighing in on the old Aristotle debate on the proper use of The Chorus in Attic dramas, Rubber is A LOT of things. (And all of those things are pretty damn spectacular). The passions and purpose of creators in our community and around the country are the centerpiece of weekly conversations on Into the Absurd: An Existential Dinner Conversation presented each week by The Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium, the Philadelphia-based theater company whose mission is to present existentialist and absurdist theater to audiences in the region. Producing Artistic Director Tina Brock hosts the conversation, illuminating the creators around the country and their reflections about life during existentially challenging times. For the past 16 years, the award-winning IRC has been interpreting the writing of Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, Franz Kafka and the many existentialist and absurdist writers grappling with the question of purpose and place in the world. Whether the stage setting is a village of twenty or two tramps under a nearly bare tree, the drama of bearing witness to each other’s stories sets the stage to light up the imagination, sharing strength to continue in challenging times. You see, Ionesco likes to talk, he talks a lot, too much, repeating and saying the same things over and over again, dislocating language in order to create absurd silly stories. The Buttons & Figs kids on this episode wrote some really crazy, absurd stories after they heard about the way Ionesco liked to write. We hope, after listening, you'll want to write some crazy, absurd stories too.

Rosanna Saracino is an Italian-Canadian director, dramaturge, educator, acting coach and costume designer, who has worked in the professional theatre industry for more than twenty years, with forays into directing and acting coaching in film, TV, video and documentaries. She received her MFA from York University in Directing, was the Director in Residence at the Canadian Stage Theatre and at Shadowpath Theatre as part of the Femme5 Operative, is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of art & lies productions. She held the post of the Head of the Acting Division of the Randolph College for the Performing Arts for twenty years, and has been an instructor with the college for as long. Currently, she is teaching at George Brown, in the Theatre Department, as well as at TFS. Her freelance work has extended to companies such as the Classical Music Conservatory, the Canadian Opera Company, the PowerPlant. She is specialized in working with large casts, and stylized and physical theatre, and has worked extensively in classical and modern adaptations, new play work, and devised theatre. Legendary Chicago newspaperman, radio host, and author Rick Kogan joins us in the Booth to share some great stories and lively conversation. He's a big fan of our show and has listened to a number of past episodes that he's told us are terrific. High praise from a master interviewer who was a close friend of Studs Terkel and is carrying on in his brilliant tradition. Rick says he may be our only guest so far who has gotten drunk in the original Booth One at the Pump Room back when real movie stars sat there. Check out the list here. Rick talks about growing up in a remarkable family - his father, legendary author and journalist Herman Kogan; his mother, reporter and publicist Marilew; and his brother, major league rock band tour manager Mark. He tells us an amazing story about Mark, Elvis and Sinatra. Their parents met at Riccardo's, a restaurant behind the Wrigley Building, and he is named Rick (not Richard) after the owner. A legendary hang out for newspaper people, artists, and musicians, our producer spent some time there back in the day just to eavesdrop on the always interesting conversations. He talks about the kind of people who were hanging around his parents' apartment growing up. A list that includes Studs & Ida Terkel, Nelson Algren, Marcel Marceau, and Mort Sahl. Can you imagine? We learn about his early career driving a cab, then moving to Spain and eventually submitting a travel piece about Dover, England to the Tribune, which sold for the then thrilling price of $160. He returned to Chicago and began an incredible career in journalism. Gary announces that on August 1st, the National Comedy Center will open in Jamestown, NY, the birthplace of Lucille Ball. Check out this video that will make you want to visit. Frank is an expert on Lucy, and will probably be going to represent. One of the cool things is that on a touch screen, you create a "sense of humor profile" to personalize your experience. They have acquired the archives of a very impressive array of comedians, including Lenny Bruce and George Carlin. Gary asks Rick about favorite guests on his radio show. He starts with Studs Terkel, who was not just the all-time great interviewer, but also a really fun guest. They talk about the WFMT Studs Terkel archive and Rick describes a favorite - Studs interviewing a very young Bob Dylan. You don't want to miss his spot-on impression of Studs and hilarious summary of the episode. The digital audio of this is not yet public, but will be soon. Rick graciously invites us to come on his radio show, After Hours, which airs on Sunday nights from 9:00 - 11:00pm CST on WGN. What an honor! The boys are excited about this opportunity. A Red Orchid Theatre is currently running a Eugene Ionesco play called Victims of Duty, a lesser known work not often produced. It stars a wonderful group of actors, including Michael Shannon and AROT co-founder Guy Van Swearingen. It's an absurdist play that deals with memories and the concept of "non-theatre". Gary and Frank admit to being somewhat puzzled by the play's themes and structure, but praise the performances and the production design by Danila Korogodsky along with excellent direction by Shira Piven. Running through August 5, this show will keep you laughing, guessing and thinking. And pondering the absurdities of life and love. Rick regales us with tales of baseball, Riverview amusement park, Mike Royko, John Wayne, and Bushman the gorilla. We discuss his fascinating true-crime book Everybody Pays, co-authored with Maurice Possley. A real page-turner and we are hoping destined for a movie deal some day. Apostasy is a British film about disfellowship in Jehovah's Witness congregations. How do families cope when their religious beliefs come into conflict with contemporary social mores. London's National Theatre is staging its first production of a play by Eugene Ionesco. Adapted and directed by Patrick Marber, Exit The King stars Rhys Ifans as a monarch who knows he will die before the end of the play. Olivia Laing's first novel Crudo was written in real time in 7 weeks during 2017, recording her thoughts on the news of the day, "to get an imprint of the moment while it is still wet". White Cube Gallery's newest exhibition marks its 25th anniversary. Memory Palace is on at their two London sites (as well as at their Hong Kong gallery, but we didn't go there!) looking at memory and how it shapes our identities. BBCTV has put the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (you know, the one where Colin Firth comes out of the lake clad in a clinging shirt) on iPlayer as a box set, we consider whether the fond memories of it match up to a re-watching 22 years on... An accomplished translator, her translation from the Yiddish of Sholem Asch's "God of Vengeance" “set Show World aflame” according to the Village Voice. She is a three-time recipient of a new play commission from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture for her contemporary adaptation of Dovid Pinski's Yiddish classic "Jake the Mechanic" as well as for the first-ever English translations of Sholem Asch's underworld plays "Motke Thief" and "The Dead Man". Episode 3 Rebecca Forstadt Rebecca Forstadt has been a voice actor in the Los Angeles area for over 35 years and is a long time member of SAG – AFTRA. Let’s learn about her career! She has an extensive resume in film, television, commercials, animation, video games, audio books, ADR.   Rebecca is best known in the anime genre specializing in kid’s voices and has voiced hundreds of projects including Robotech, Tenchi Muyo, Ghost in the Shell, Code Geass and Metropolis. Rebecca studied theater at Orange Coast College, the Lee Strasberg Institute and the Ossetynski Actor’s Lab.   She received 2 Drama- Logue Awards for outstanding performance as an actress in Ionesco’s Tales with Eugene Ionesco in residence and Leonce and Lena at Stages Trilingual Theatre in Hollywood. Dealing with boredom Astrid: Hello I'm Astrid. Welcome to VOE school talk show. I'm joined today by Helen. Hello Helen. Helen: Hi Astrid. You know, I'm happy you called me to present this programme with you because I was there by my desk feeling a bit bored (yawns loudly). Astrid: Okay. Let's make this a programme all about boredom, shall we? And I'll start by stimulating your imagination. Helen: Thank you, but how are you going to make me excited and interested in something, Astrid? Astrid: How about I challenge you to a question you might not know the answer to? Helen: Okay, well, you can try. Go on then. Astrid: Well, I know you like the theatre. Helen: I do. But it has to be an exciting play or I get restless. Astrid: Restless, you mean unable to sit still because you get bored or worried even. Okay. I wonder how you'd feel watching the longest continuous play recorded? Helen: That's quite an offer. What do you mean? Astrid: According to the Guinness Book of Records, the longest continuous dramatic performance was held in New Jersey, in the US, in 2010. But do you know how long the cast for The Bald Soprano by Eugene Ionesco, was on stage for? Was it for about: a) 8 hours b) 17 hours c) 23 hours Helen: Wow! They're all pretty long. I'll say b) 17 hours, Astrid. Astrid: Goodness! Right. Okay. I'll let you know the answer by the end of the programme. Now, let's talk more about boredom. I think this is a feeling we have to learn how to cope with. Helen: Yes, we have to learn to deal with this situation successfully – to cope with it. But people often feel they want to change their life, to change their job. They might feel stuck in a rut. Astrid: That's a good phrase - stuck in a rut. So you mean you've become too fixed in one kind of job? Helen: Yes. You know Astrid, even I sometimes dream of something a bit more exciting like being a professional diver or maybe even a pilot of a really fast plane. Astrid: Well, guess what: even pilots get bored, you know? Helen: Not when they are flying anyway. Astrid: Wrong. When they're up in the air! Helen: No way! Really? I don't believe you! Astrid: Well, Missy Cummings, an American, was a fighter pilot. Listen to the phrasal verb she uses meaning to stop being bored, at least for a while. Is there ever time for a fighter pilot to get bored? Missy Cummings , former fighter pilot: Oh my gosh, sure, for the same reasons that commercial pilots get bored. These fighter jets are very automated when it comes to just holding altitude and heading. So you turn everything in autopilot and I pAstridably listened to more Oprah Winfrey TV shows on the high-frequency radios… And so you get good about using the technology to figure out how to stave off that boredom. Helen: Ah, so she listened to a show hosted by the American presenter Oprah Winfrey on the radio to stave off her boredom. Now, to stave off means to stop or to keep an unpleasant feeling away. In this case she means boredom. Astrid: Yes, indeed. Astrid: But some experts think there's something good about feeling bored. Helen: Really? Astrid: Let's hear what Tiffany Watt-Smith has to say. She works for the Centre for the History of Emotions at the Queen Mary University of London. Pay attention to the word she uses to describe what boredom does to people. Tiffany Watt-Smith, Queen Mary University of London: On the one hand people are worried about being under-occupied and bored. On the other there's a set of anxieties about us having any more downtime, you know. We can constantly check our phones at the bus stop. Everything is to be filled and what does that do to our minds? I think boredom is a very useful emotion. It's an emotion which spurs people on to change something about their environment. If you're bored that gives rise to creativity. Helen: So boredom spurs people on to change something. To spur on means to stimulate or to encourage someone to do something. Astrid: So what are you going to do, Helen? How will you change your life? Helen: Change my life? Okay. Two things. The first one is: I want to know if I got that question right! Astrid: Well I said at the beginning of the programme that the longest continuous dramatic performance was held in New Jersey, US, in 2010. And I asked you how long was the cast on stage for to play The Bald Soprano by Eugene Ionesco. Helen: Yes. The options were 8 hours, 17 hours and 23 hours, I think. And I said 17. Was I right? Astrid: You were not! Helen: Oh, no! Astrid: It was even longer. Helen: Wow! 23! Astrid: According to the Guinness Book of Records, the play lasted 23 hours, 33 minutes and 54 seconds. It was achieved by The 27 O'Clock Players who performed The Bald Soprano at Belmar, New Jersey, USA, on 27 July 2010. Anyway Helen, what's the second thing you're going to do to stave off your boredom? Helen: You know what, Astrid? I'm going to book myself a fantastic holiday! Maybe I could start with a visit to Patagonia in Argentina to see the penguins… Astrid: Yeah, it sounds very exciting. But before you head off to Patagonia, could you remind us of some of the English words we've heard today? Helen: We heard: 1. to yawn 打呵欠 2. stimulating 令人兴奋的 3. restless 焦躁不安的,坐立不安的 4. to cope with 处理,应付 5. stuck in a rut 一成不变,原地踏步 6. to stave off 挡开,避开,延缓 7. to spur on 驱使,鼓励,鞭策 Astrid: Thanks Helen. This morning we addressed Woodfox's legal teams' procedural direction and Woodfox's safety at the institution as his release looms near. We are joined by: Robert King and Gail Shaw, who share portions of letters and conversations with Woodfox.
