In 1957, Tennessee Williams returned to the Martin Beck Theatre with Orpheus Descending, a play he had spent nearly two decades trying to get right. Originally produced in 1940 as Battle of Angels, the drama had collapsed amid censorship battles, technical problems, and public outrage. Yet Williams could never leave it behind. In this episode, we trace the remarkable seventeen-year journey of the play, from its disastrous Boston tryout to its rebirth on Broadway under a new title. Along the way, we explore Williams's complicated relationship with success and failure, the creative partnership that shaped his work, and the cast and collaborators who helped bring Orpheus Descending to life, including Maureen Stapleton, Harold Clurman, Boris Aronson, Robert Loggia, Cliff Robertson, and Lois Smith. Featuring archival interviews and firsthand accounts, this is the story of one of Broadway's most ambitious productions, why audiences rejected it, and how its failure marked a turning point in the life of America's greatest playwright. -- Click here for a transcript with photos, videos, and a list of all resources used. Bob Rafelson's “Five Easy Pieces” established the behavior-driven, theme-over-plot indie movies that paved the way for the best era for indies. Jack Nicholson is a badass (asshole) prodigy-turned-roustabout looking to find himself in people he's willing to screw over in Bob Rafelson's seminal movie. But what exactly is a publicist? The word publicist carries a hint of intrigue. It takes us back to a time when this profession unfolded behind the scenes, long before the internet, social media, and influencer marketing. In fashion, beauty, or design, publicists---often called press agents---were key figures. They were recognized as true experts, and their role went far beyond sharing information. They shaped careers. They created events. And they knew how to captivate the media.Take Eleanor Lambert. She founded the Fashion Calendar. She invented... New York Fashion Week! Thanks to her, American designers like Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein gained international recognition.Lambert wasn't just a publicist---she was a visionary. In Hollywood, there was Lois Smith. She had a gift for turning an actress into an icon.Marilyn Monroe owed her a lot.Smith knew how to orchestrate public appearances, manage relationships with journalists, and build a story around a personality.Being a publicist back then meant having a precious contact book, an intimate knowledge of the industry, and above all, an unfailing instinct for storytelling.Their influence was built on trust, respect, and professional rigor.Today, the profession has evolved.PR agencies have taken over. They juggle journalists, influencers, social media, visual content, digital partnerships... and even paid advertising. Results are measured differently: reach, engagement, conversions.Yet despite these sophisticated tools, the essence of the job remains the same.Whether it's a journalist in the 1950s or a content creator today, strong stories, authentic narratives, and genuine human connections remain the key to building awareness for a product or personality. The word publicist is still widely searched online. And yesterday's publicists and today's agencies share one thing in common: lasting visibility is built on storytelling and human relationships. The very term publicist continues to fascinate. It evokes elegance, subtlety, and the boldness of those pioneers who turned communication into an art form.Their legacy lives on in every press release, every event, every strategy designed to bring a story to life.In the end, no matter the tools. No matter the era.Our profession remains the same: weaving stories, creating connections, and building visibility that lasts. This is what PR professionals continue to do today, still inspired by those who shaped the history of the craft.I'm also taking this opportunity to announce our next free workshop on the #1 PR tool: the press release.Reserve your spot even if you can't join us live. She was one of the entertainment industry's most respected and sought-after media and publicity strategists, ran her own talent management firm (B. Company), and now she works with Late Show legend, Stephen Colbert… as president of his production company Spartina. Carrie inspires me and so many other women by being a kind leader in a tough industry, her dedication to her team, and her 1.8 second-response time to text messages. Whether you're just starting out or you've been in business for years, there's something here for you. So grab a cup of tea, buckle up and tune in!In this episode, we discussFinding the confidence to start your own thing in the entertainment industry - TWICE!Handling comparative pressure, facing down obstacles and refusing to apologize for who you are.Balancing high demands on your time while finding time to live a lifeHer genius method to get to inbox zero-ish (I've tried it, it works!)The women that have lifted HER up.This episode at a glance:[08:23] What helped Carrie take off on her own: she wanted to contribute to the choices that her clients were making, not just enhance the work they were already doing. And it just took one client, America Ferrara, to say “I see you as that” to give her the confidence to *be* that.[20:45] The main reason Carrie said YES to running Stephen and Evelyn Colbert's production company, Spartina: If that YES is loud, if something magnetic is pulling you, that's telling.[31:08] Carrie's empowering leadership style: she taps into people's strengths and celebrates the things her team can do that she can't. If you have a team of clones, you won't succeed. [44:05] Carrie was surrounded by strong female role models, starting with her mom, author and speaker Marcia Byalick. She learned from great women in her industry like Kelly Bush Novak, Lesley Dart, Lois Smith, and Pat Kingsley.[58:03] What's on Carrie's Times Square billboard: “There's always a ticket”. This week, it wouldn't be the final episode of July if we weren't talking about a huge new theatrical release, but we're doing it a bit differently this time around as for the very first time (officially anyway) we review two movies at the same time! July's canon consideration is 1996's Twister, directed by Jan de Bont and starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Lois Smith, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Todd Field, Joey Slotnick, Jeremy Davies and Zach Grenier, but we spend just as much if not more time discussing 2024's Twisters, directed Lee Isaac Chung and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Katy O'Brian, Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet and Paul Scheer. And we're joined to discuss both by returning favourite / girlfriend of the show Ashley Olson, a self-confessed "weather girlie" for whom the original film has been a lifelong fave. It's a delightful chat as two prairie girls roast an ignorant city boy for knowing nothing about storm tracking. If you'd like to watch the films before listening along to our conversation, Twister is currently streaming on Crave and Starz in Canada at the time of publication, while Twisters can be found in theaters everywhere. Oh, you thought we would be discussing other works this week as well? Well, we're not. Two movies is more than enough, you sickos. We'll be back next week to kick off P.T.August, a month-long celebration of the works of Paul Thomas Anderson, beginning with 2012's The Master, a movie J Mo's been hauling around on Blu-ray for 11 years without ever having watched it. That all changes next Friday! So come on back now, as the rest of our PTA slate includes Phantom Thread, Inherent Vice, Licorice Pizza and concludes with our August canon entry Boogie Nights. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Bill gives Jo one day to try to get Dorothy flying, and his new fiancée, Melissa (Jami Gertz), gets dragged along for the ride. Zach and Chris discuss what would probably really happen if you were super close to an F5 tornado, what Dusty's (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) job on Jo's team is, who is sponsoring the "evil" team led by Cary Elwes, the various mishaps and injuries that happened on set and more. You can watch Twister currently on Max. Mama Needs a Movie

In anticipation of the soon-to-be-released sequel, Anne and Ryan take a look back at 1996's original TWISTER starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lois Smith, Jeremy Davies, Todd Field and Alan Ruck. Director Jan de Bont's disaster spectacular follows a group of amateur storm chasers across Oklahoma, flirting dangerously close with tornados as old flames Jo (Hunt) and Bill (Paxton) flirt with each other. Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin co-wrote TWISTER, which turned out to be the second highest grossing movie of 1996, stirring up $242 million at the box office. As Lee Isaac Chung's remake touches down this week, we look back at the original that started it all, along with diversions off path into The Bear, Jurassic Park, Outbreak, Nightcrawler, Los Angeles Plays Itself, Longlegs, Daddy Longlegs, and much much more!

In this episode of Overlapping Dialogue, we eagerly head full speed into the danger zone with two thrilling disaster pictures intent on traumatizing their characters and relentlessly entertaining their audiences: Black Sunday and Twister! But before we masochistically chase storms of both the physical and emotional variety, we stock up on a Blue Plate Special selection focusing on some new releases (In a Violent Nature) and filmmakers (Jane Schoenbrun, director of We're All Going to the World's Fair and I Saw the TV Glow) that hopefully suggest that maybe the spirit of cinema isn't dead after all. Eventually, we abandon all decorum and good sense by embracing the chaos of our double feature: join us as we delight in the unabashed 70s-ness of John Frankenheimer's B-movie epic (we also take the opportunity to induct not one but *two* members into our Hall of Fame, the Immune) and celebrate Jan de Bont's fabulous piece of 90s nonsense, filled with more of its era's character actors than any act of nature could every whisk away. In 2017, Vancouver resident Lois Smith got the idea to put out a succinct print guide to resources and services for people experiencing homelessness. She’d been volunteering with Friends of the Carpenter, a faith-based nonprofit that runs a day center for people experiencing homelessness. She says the stories from the unhoused people she talked to stayed with her, and realized she could put something tangible into their hands to help direct them to services, shelter and other resources. She knew it had to be informed by the people she wanted to help and she wanted to be light, withstand rain, snow and heat.   Smith now puts out the guides yearly as an independent project that is funded entirely by donations. They’re printed yearly in different colors, making it easier to tell which one is current. She says she works with local officials, law enforcement, social service agencies, churches and many others to make sure the content is useful - and gets into the hands of people who need it. Portland’s Street Roots puts out a similar paper guide, though not a waterproof one. Smith joins us to tell us more about how the guides are used in Vancouver and Clark County and how she sees the idea spreading.

It's a film that takes several well-worn, sometimes quaint, and seemingly disparate cinematic tropes and combines them into a transcendent and irreplicable experience. We discuss the rise and fall of filmmaker Jan de Bont, from his time as one of Paul Verhoeven and John McTiernan's key collaborators, to his work on back-to-back 90s action hits (this film and 1994's 'Speed'), to his gun-for-hire status for the 2003 'Tomb Raider' sequel that stands as his last film as director to date. Then, we talk about the film's host of influences, most notably its screwball comedy premise wrapped in a disaster movie's skin. Finally, we discuss the movie's groundbreaking special effects and champion the film as a state-of-the-art blockbuster spectacle.Follow Jackson on Twitter. Cindy shares her memories of working with Frank on his musical Loving Repeating (for which she won a Joseph Jefferson Award for playing Gertrude Stein); how Frank was a champion of the positive who had the ability to love an actor to a great performance; the joy of experiencing the “full Galati;” her talent to be a muse; and how Frank Galati continues to inspire. Director Bob Rafelson and actor Jack Nicholson have collaborated on 6 films together including the film classic Five Easy Pieces (1970). Nicholson plays a dropout from upper-class America who works on an oil rig and passes the time at dingy bars and motels while treating himself and everyone around him like hot garbage. Jason Furie and Adam Roth both haven't seen this one until now. We have a lot to talk about.Pizza Enamel Pinz by Jason Furie | LIVE NOWVisit Website | Join Newsletter | Support | Facebook | Instagram
