Rachel PeakeOriginally hailing from Saskatchewan, Rachel is a director and dramaturge of theatre and opera. She is currently the Artistic Director of the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario.From 2021 to 2023 Rachel was the Associate Artistic Director of the Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver. There she oversaw the running of the Artistic Department from 2021-2022 during the Artistic Director's maternity leave. From 2017 to 2020 she was the Associate Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, where she led the Citadel's New Play Development initiatives. In January 2023 she won the Ovation Award for Outstanding Direction for her work on Something Rotten!, produced by Theatre Under the Stars.Rachel recently directed Macbeth for Calgary Opera (Betty Mitchell Award nominee - Outstanding Production of a Musical) , Sense and Sensibility for the Arts Club, 9 to 5: the Musical for the Citadel Theatre, Something Rotten! for Theatre Under the Stars, and The Pearl Fishers for Vancouver Opera. Rachel directed and dramaturged Hyperlink for the elbow, which was nominated for a Critic's Choice in Innovation. Recent directorial credits also include The Garneau Block for the Citadel, La Cenerentola for Vancouver Opera, and Phaedra/ Serenade for Pacific Opera Victoria.Some additional career highlights include directing and dramaturging the world première opera, Stickboy, for Vancouver Opera; directing the première of The Contest of the Winds for Caravan Farm Theatre; helming SexyVoices, a community-based creation piece about love and sex in the disability community for Realwheels Theatre; directing Angels in America: Part One at Studio 58, and directing and co-conceiving the interactive project Sustainability in an Imaginary World at UBC.Rachel was the co-Artistic Director of Solo Collective Theatre from 2008-2013 for whom she directed Cool Beans, Play With Monsters, After Jerusalem, The Project, and The Trolley Car. She also spent four years as Resident Stage Director of Dark by Five at Gros Morne Summer Music where she directed and co-created fifteen new interdisciplinary works. Rachel interned at the Komische Oper in Berlin, at Stratford's Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction, and in the Shaw Festival's Neil Munro Directing Internship. She also studied extensively with her mentor, James Fagan Tait. Weiner Middle School and the JCC Summer Theatre program where she both performed and acted as a theatre camp counselor. I last worked with Carlie in 1999. Ryan Surles was eighteen when he took classes at Theatre Under the Stars. The following summer (1989), I recruited him to play Bud Frump in my directorial debut, a teen production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Years later, when my niece was a toddler, Ryan was her teacher at Gymboree. A former Las Vegas resident, Ryan gave me a piece of sage advice before I moved here. When her grand-daughter Sam inherits her piano, she also inherits the mystery of Morag's story. An intimate letter composed of fragmented Scottish ballads leads Sam to uncover Morag's possible queerness. In piecing together Morag's history through their shared Scottish musical heritage, Sam discovers a voice of her own. This new experimental musical warps, disrupts, and reconfigures traditional Scottish storytelling, ballad singing and participatory community dance. Reimagining ceilidh theatre from a queer perspective, original compositions are playfully interwoven with electronic loops and interactive dancing to tell old stories anew. Claire Love Wilson Claire Love Wilson (she/they) is queer white/Scottish settler multidisciplinary artist living on the ancestral and unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil- Waututh) First Nations. She works as a theatre-maker, actor, playwright, musician, and singer-songwriter. Claire has been featured as a creator and performer at the Vancouver Fringe Festival, the rEvolver festival, The Shift Festival, and Theatre Under the Gun in collaboration with companies like The Only Animal, Urban Ink, the frank theatre, Aphotic Theatre and ITSAZOO Theatre. Claire has also facilitated workshops on her personal loop- based performance practice “Song-Walking” locally as part of Interplay Festival and the Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival, as well as internationally at the University of The West of Scotland, the Scottish Storytelling Centre, and BAM in Paris. Claire is the co- creator, lead performer and co-producer of the experimental musical “Morag, You're a Long Time Deid” (MORAG), which works to queer traditional Scottish ballads through loop-based soundscaping and storytelling. As a work in development MORAG has been showcased at the National Theatre of Scotland, The Scottish Storytelling Centre and at PushOff! in Vancouver. The production premiered as part of Touchstone Theatre's 45th anniversary season in June 2022. MORAG had its UK premiere at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is now on tour in Scotland, Ireland and England. Cassie received a BFA in Musical Theatre from The University of Miami and an MFA in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University. Other training includes Ann Reinking's Broadway Theatre Project and Gil Stroming's Break the Floor in New York City. Cassie was an adjunct professor in the Musical Theatre Program at Montclair State University as well as a Graduate Student Instructor at San Diego State University where she taught dance at the undergraduate and graduate level. Tom is a Co-head of Musical Theatre: Head of Production and New Works. They hold a Masters in Directing from Texas State University. At TXST, Tom has directed Spring Awakening, Guys & Dolls, Cabaret, Hair, Speech and Debate, the New Musical workshop of Dylan Spencer's Cat Obedience School, and many other new works. In Texas he has worked as an associate director at regional theatres such as The Zach Theatre in Austin, and Theatre Under the Stars in Houston. Regional theater is really the lifeblood of the performing arts in America. It's the place where we get that first spark and inspiration to become lifelong theatergoers or decide to become actors ourselves. But in recent years regional theaters have been struggling to find audiences and to just stay open. The pandemic caused some to close their doors for good, and the ones that remain suffered through uncertain futures. Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, Texas was one such theater that canceled their season and lost millions of dollars in revenue and donations. But it slowly came back in 2021 and is about to start a new season under the leadership of its Tony-nominated artistic director, Dan Knechtges. He previously directed and choreographed Broadway shows like Xanadu and 110 in the Shade as well as his Broadway debut with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I've worked with him twice: at The Muny doing Seussical and then at TUTS with How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He was last seen in the Broadway musical, Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations, having originated the role of legendary manager, Shelly Berger. Before that, he had most recently finished production on NBC's upcoming series Lincoln. He is currently developing stories for TV and streaming content. Joshua also founded and runs a company called Artist's Strategy, whose goal is to help freelance creative entrepreneurs develop strategic business plans and work towards a sustainable future in the arts. In this episode, Adam and Budi interview Chan Harris a true renaissance man of the theatre about his career in the theatre and how life can be circuitous and fortuitous at the same time.Chan Harris studied at the Juilliard School with classmates that included Renee Fleming, Audra MacDonald, and Laura Linney. He studied voice with Beverley Peck Johnson, graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Music.After graduation, he worked for Theatre Under the Stars (West Side Story, La Cage Aux Folles, the world premiere of Kopitt & Yeston’s Phantom, Evita, the Merry Widow), the Alley (Forever Plaid, Robert Wilson's Danton's Death) and in Houston Grand Opera's historic production of Astor Piazzolla's Maria de Buenos Aires. He has been cast in several national tours (Evita, Big River, Into the Woods) and worked in New York, both Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway, and in regional theatres all over the country in Forever Plaid, Brigadoon, Old Wicked Songs, Beauty and the Beast, Godspell, and was a resident actor at the Mountain Playhouse (Don't Dress For Dinner, The Winslow Boy, Funny Money, Inherit the Wind, Broadway Bound, The Lion In Winter, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat). Internationally, Chan was cast in a German-language tour of Phantom of the Opera, for which he toured Germany, Belgium, Austria, and Switzerland. In Berlin, he worked for the prestigious Theatre Des Westens and Berliner Ensemble. He also created the role of Young Kafka in Kafka: In the Penal Colony for the Polish National Opera.In 1997 he was asked to play Jesus in the Korean-language Jesus Christ Superstar for the Hyundae Theatre Company in Seoul, South Korea. For this role, he was the first foreigner to work as an actor in Korean-language theatre and the first foreigner to win a “best actor” award at the Korean Theatre Awards.In 1999, he was asked to direct the national tour of Forever Plaid. At the Mountain Playhouse, Chan has directed over 20 plays, including four world premieres, three of which were commissioned through a grant by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. He has continued to direct in New York and for theatres all over the country.During his career as a director, Chan has continued to study. He enrolled in The Actors Center conservatory program, studying under Ron van Lieu (acting), Earl Gister (acting), Felix Ivanov (stage combat), Grace Zandarski (voice), Per Brahe (mask), Katherine Fitzmaurice (voice), Christopher Bayes (clown) and Frank Deal (improv). He spent time in Bali, Indonesia studying Balinese dance, mask work, and kecak, and in Korea studying Pansori. As a teacher, he has taught all over the world. In addition to teaching masterclasses in New York City, at the University of Alabama, the University of Montavallo, the Foxcroft School, Bowdoin College, and the University of Texas, he taught drama and theatre development as a “sustainable” resource in the Transvaal area of South Africa through a U.N. Hello everyone! Today is a very special episode for me. I have had the pleasure of getting to witness this young man grow into the kindest, most professional human ever. I am of course speaking of the wonderful and amazing Joshua Lalisan. Josh and I met in the ensemble of the musical FAME! and ever since then I've had a special place in my heart for him. On today's episode we talked about queer representation, being a dancer, and toxic masculinity in the theatre community. He just finished wrapping up a successful turn as Sky in Mamma Mia! with Theatre Under the Stars and he is going to continue to be a break out star here in Vancouver. As a volunteer, Doug has taught instrumental music and band to visually impaired youth in a program he founded for the CNIB and volunteers as a board member and consultant with a variety of music and arts organizations.Currently, he is in demand as adjudicator and clinician at music festivals throughout Canada and the U.S. most recently for the Pearl City Band Festival in Hawaii, the North Vancouver schools band and strings festival, as conductor of the South Eastern United States (SUES) High School Honor Band and Middle School Honor Band and a guest conductor last season for the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Troy State (Alabama) University Symphonic Band. In the summer of 2012, Doug will be Senior Band Director for the UBC Summer Music Institute. Doug continues to support local artists serving as Executive Producer for Malcolm Aiken's debut CD Paper Star, as Associate Producer for Robert Buckley's new album of Wind Band works Continuum and is a co-founder and producer for the Marcus Mosely Chorale.In his own community, Doug was instrumental in the creation of the unique and visionary “Community Music Hall” – a dedicated large ensemble rehearsal space within the new West Vancouver Community Centre. The facility provides space to many community music ensembles and is home to the West Vancouver Youth Band for which Doug has been Principal Conductor and Program Director since 1993. Hello podcast fans! This week we’re coming at you with the lovely Jolene Bernardino, who was an absolute ray of sunshine from the moment she walked into my apartment to record. You may recognize her from the recent production of 42nd Street at Theatre Under the Stars where she played Ann “Anytime Annie” Reilly and tapped up a storm when she wasn’t delivery witty dialogue. It was interesting to get to talk to her especially because she’s a part of the next generation of actors that are going to be entering the city, and let me tell you, you’re going to be seeing a lot of this one!
