On August 2, 1993, Lyudmila Korvina, who was an experienced hiking instructor, led 6 of her students on a hiking trip to the Khamar Daban mountain range in southern Siberia. The first 2 days of the hike, the group did really well, beating the time anticipated to get up the Retranslyator peak. However, when they were beginning their descent on August 4th, they were hit with a rainstorm which slowed them down. The following morning, the group set off down the mountain but after only a few minutes the first disaster struck. Sacha, who was at the back of the group, began to scream. When the group turned around, they saw that he was bleeding from his eyes & his ears as well as frothing at the mouth. It didn't take long before every single member but one succumbed to the same symptoms.Valentina Utochenko, the only surviving member, ran for her life not fully understanding what was happening. For 4 days, she followed power lines down the mountain, until she found a river & began to follow that. In August 10th, she was found by a group of kayakers. An autopsy report concluded that they had all died of hypothermia except for Lyudmila who had suffered a heart attack. They all had signs of bruised lungs, & protein deficiency due to malnutrition was listed as a contributing factor to their deaths. The deaths were ultimately ruled to be accidental. My Grandfather Knew Untold Secrets of the Dyatlov Pass Incident - Reddit No Sleep StoryOn 1st February 1959, nine Russian hikers on the trek of a lifetime through the Ural Mountains pitched a tent and settled in for the night. Hours later, all nine fled the safety of the tent and perished in the freezing, snowy conditions. Some in the party succumbed to hypothermia, but others were found with grisly injuries. The 'Dyatlov Pass Incident', as it came to be known, has inspired so many dark and often outlandish potential explanations. Before delving into the most prominent theories, let's consider the facts of the matter. The group originally consisted of 10 highly experienced hikers who were – with one key exception – all students and recent graduates from the Ural Polytechnical Institute. The odd one out was Semyon Zolotaryov, a last minute addition to the group and, at 37, conspicuously older than the others. In the early stages of the trek, one member of the group dropped out due to ill health. The rest carried on, taking photos of each other larking about and recording diary entries that expressed their excitement about the adventure to come. “I wonder what awaits us in this trip?” one wrote. “What will we encounter?”Weeks later, a search party sent to locate the missing hikers found the remains of their tent on the side of a mountain called Kholat Syakhl. Inside were the hikers' boots, clothes, and maps, along with some food laid out, seemingly for a meal. The side of the tent had been slashed open from the inside – a sign of just how desperate they'd been to get out.Footprints made it clear the group had left the tent without any shoes. At the base of a nearby tree, next to an extinguished campfire, lay the corpses of21-year-old Yuri Doroshenko and 23-year-old Yuri Krivonischenko. Both had seemingly frozen to death but also exhibited burn marks and multiple abrasions. Not far away, lying in the snow, were the bruised bodies of the group's leader, 23-year-old Igor Dyatlov, and 22-year-old Zinaida Kolmogorova. It looked like both had been trying to return to the tent when they died. Some days after this, the body of 23-year-old Rustem Slobodin was also discovered. He had a fractured skull. The remaining hikers were found in a ravine near a shelter they'd attempted to carve out of the snow. DEAR COMRADES is based on a true story surrounding a strike by factory workers on June 1st and 2nd, 1962 in the city of Novocherkassk. The raising of food prices and the lowering of wages at the local factory led to a spontaneous uprising by thousands of area residents that eventually leading to violent reaction by local and federal officials. The events of those two days was kept secret until the nineties. DEAR COMRADES focuses on the life and family of Lyudmila (Julia Vysotskaya) a Party executive and devout communist who had fought in WWII for Stalin's ideology. Certain that her work will create a communist society, the woman detests any anti-Soviet sentiment. During a strike at the local electromotive factory, Lyudmila witnesses a laborers' piquet gunned down under orders from the government that seeks to cover up mass labor strikes in USSR. After the bloodbath, when survivors flee from the square, Lyudmila realizes her daughter has disappeared. A gaping rift opens in her worldview. Despite the blockade of the city, mass arrests, and the authorities' attempts to cover up the massacre, Lyudmila searches for her daughter. We don't know how the search will end, but realize that the woman's life won't ever be the same. Director Andrei Konchalovsky (Uncle Vanya, Siberiade, Runaway Train, The Inner Circle) and lead actor Julia Vysotskaya join us for a conversation on the importance of telling an unknown story, the role of art and storytelling and how Lyuda’s saga reflexes a broader perspective on Soviet-era repression.
