As a popular culture commentator, he has appeared on Dan Savage's Savage Love and many other media outlets. Collaborating with Mariotta Gary Smith, Marla Renee Stewart, and Dr. James Wadley, he is the co-editor of An Intersectional Approach to Sex Therapy: Centering the Lives of Indigenous, Racialized, and People of Color, published by Routledge Press. In the heat of the moment, when you're like all riled up and you're turned on and you know that I'm liking it and you're liking it, do you feel less silly? Brandon (01:17): No I still feel silly. Because I think, because I don't know what to say. Dr. Jess (01:21): But you do know what to say, because you just said it, in jest. Brandon (01:25): Yes but in the moment, it's like I'm drawing so many blanks. Dr. Jess (01:32): Well yeah anyhow. I was thinking that what I find is, that the more turned on I am, the less self conscious I am. If I'm in the heat of the moment, 'cause I don't worry about what's going on around me, I don't think about anybody else's needs. Brandon (01:47): But that's my problem. My problem is I'm constantly paying attention to everything that's happening around me. And I'm not immersed in the moment, even when I'm really into things. I'm still cognizant of how much noise is being made or you know just the environment and that really detracts from what's happening. Dr. Jess (02:07): So what do we do about that? I mean I know what we can do about that. What do you wanna do about that? Brandon (02:12): I look at it as my problem. I think I have to really get into the head space and also not care as much.

Welcome back to the Black Woman Be Whole takeover on BeREAL! On the penultimate episode of this takeover, Ednesha, Kim, and Marquia are joined by Marla Renee Stewart to discuss sexuality, kink, and sexual confidence in Black women. Good thing Diana isn't here this week (there's a lot of “applesauce” talk)! Marla Renee Stewart, MA is a sexologist, coach, and author who runs her own sexuality education company, Velvet Lips, and is also a Co-Founder of the Sex Down South Conference. She has studied human sexuality for more than 20 years and has given over 500 workshops all over the world. She also has been featured on a variety of media outlets, including Netflix's Trigger Warning with Killer Mike and Love & HipHop Atlanta. She co-wrote her first book, The Ultimate Guide to Seduction & Foreplay with Dr. Jessica O'Reilly, which debuted in April 2020.   Marla begins the episode by talking about her background and how she got into the sexology field. She recounts her coming out when she was 16 and how she would talk to her female friends and learned that they were not having orgasms. Ednesha relates this to the fact that a lot of sex dialogue around women is about pregnancy and STD prevention, and rarely about pleasure and sexuality.    The women move into the topic of sexual communication. Marla addresses when it is beneficial to be direct versus sensitive when talking to your partner about your sexual needs and concerns. They touch on the idea that often women will say something and others will take the statement to be something they must analyze for underlying context. It can create strain on a relationship when someone expects their partner to know things they won't vocalize. Because of this, a simple change in communication can create a big change in a relationship. To make this change, it is important to learn if your partner is a visual, auditory, or tactile communicator.    After a short break, the women return to discuss Marla's Sex Down South Conference. Marla outlines the goals of the conference, and how the coordinators works to uplift black, queer, disabled, and sex worker voices. Kim chimes in to tell about her experience at the conference two years in a row (pre-COVID of course). She tells that past the titillating fun of the sex dungeon and kink demonstrations, Kim sat in on some very informative panels about consent, sexual trauma, and sexual shame.    Lastly, the women talk about how to prioritize joy as a woman of color. Often, sexuality and kink for women of color are overlooked or stigmatized. In honor of National Orgasm Day (July 31st, 2020), we invited our guest speaker Marla Renee Stewart, MA. I know that is what is keeping me keeping me happy. Yeah so again. We talked about this before. There's this feeling of being really conflicted where we know how lucky we are. But we're still super frustrated and you and I were chatting about where we'd want to travel when this is all over and and again that's just like such a massive privilege to even get to think about that but I was saying to you. There's no where I WANNA go specifically. I JUST WANNA work. I WanNa go where I was supposed to go to work and in May I was so lucky that I was going all over Europe in in Romania in Portugal and Spain and elsewhere and so those are all canceled and I get it of course not you know not a victim in this but I just want to work again. I just wanted to do what I normally do. And it's weird to do it over zoom. Yeah it it.
