Nonprofits Are Messy: Lessons in Leadership | Fundraising | Board Development | Communications
2025 felt like a year when everything became more and harder. More crises. More fear. More civic strain. More communities under pressure. And yet – more leadership, too. In this episode, Glennda connects with Darlene Nipper, President of the Rockwood Leadership Institute, for a grounded look at what leadership truly looked like in 2025. Darlene shares what she and her team witnessed across the country: communities organizing, mutual-aid volunteers pivoting to meet urgent needs, families creating rapid-response communication networks, and leaders of small organizations adapting and strategizing for the future. This wasn't leadership from the podium. It was leadership from the sidewalk, school hallway, boardroom, and living room. Together, Glennda and Darlene talk about what broke, what held, and what grew stronger this year: How democracy became a shared responsibility, not just a political concept What “leading from the inside out” looks like in high-pressure environments Why the long view and the short view have to coexist What nonprofit leaders need to prioritize amid uncertainty And through it all, one truth kept surfacing: leadership is no longer reserved for the chosen few. It is happening everywhere, often in people who never expected to step into the role. Whether you lead a nonprofit, neighborhood group, faith community, or simply your own family, this episode offers clarity on what your leadership means right now, and what it needs next. TUNE IN TO LEARN: How 2025 redefined who counts as a leader: This year showed us that leadership doesn't just come from titles or org charts – neighbors, parents, volunteers, and everyday people stepped in where systems fell short. Why democracy became a litmus test for leadership this year: In 2025, leaders weren't just asked to run programs. They were asked to choose whether to protect democratic values or remain silent as they eroded. How easy on-ramps – rather than professional gatekeeping – brought more people into meaningful action: Grassroots movements gained momentum because people could simply show up, proving accessibility is what fuels community power. What nonprofit leaders need to prioritize amid uncertainty: From pivoting quickly to listening deeply, this episode breaks down the practices that helped organizations stay grounded and effective. How leaders are thinking ahead while addressing immediate crises: Even while navigating fires, funding losses, and political turmoil, visionary leaders shifted into long-view strategy – imagining a future they may never personally see. KEY QUOTES: “I think this notion of leadership is this far-off behavior or category of people that's not us, totally is a thing, you know, and it's like – no, actually it is all of us.” - Darlene Nipper “I do think this moment is calling a lot of people into leadership in ways that are really motivating.” - Glennda Testone “So money should not be a problem. You know? That should not even be an issue. If we believe in the work, we need to give it away is such a level that people are just not even leaders are not even thinking about where the money is going to come from.” - Darlene Nipper “Listen to your constituents, your community, your people, and come out with what you know, because your role, your place, your space is very unique to you and the work that you're doing.” - Darlene Nipper ABOUT GUEST: With over 25 years of leadership and advocacy experience, Darlene Nipper joined Rockwood as a trainer in 2012 and now serves as CEO. Darlene's knowledge of the challenges facing leaders and the practices required for effective leadership is informed by her own background at a range of organizations. She has held key leadership roles in nonprofit and social justice organizations, as well as city government and foundations. Darlene previously served as the executive director of the BET Foundation, and as the chief operating officer at National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), during which time she founded NAMI's Multicultural and International Policy Center. She is the former director of LGBT Affairs in the Executive Office of the Mayor of D.C., and the 2024-25 Visiting Senior Fellow for Movement Infrastructure and Explorations at the Freedom Together Foundation. A native Washingtonian, Darlene is an ordained interfaith minister, and practices mindfulness meditation, deep presence, and living joy. “If you’re not growing, you’re dying.” I remember that from some of the training I went through as a McDonald’s manager. Now, nearly 2 decades later, I still focus on learning and growing. For those interested in missions, it is important to remember that entering the mission field is a process. This week on Engaging Missions, Briel Kjetland shares about the work she’s doing to become a missionary associate. Since graduating from Trinity Christian, Briel has been planning and preparing for mission work. When she was in high school, Briel heard God’s call to be a missionary. The call of Jesus is always more radical than we would like to think. One of His calls throughout the Gospels is to take care of the poor. Keith Giles felt God leading him to serve those in need by starting a house church that gave 100 percent of its offerings to them. For 11 years, Keith has been working in house churches. On this episode, Keith shares about the beauty and chaos that comes with house churches. He also talks about realizing full-time ministry can happen in motels and grocery stores, not just church buildings. During the show, he gives many stories of God’s work with those in need. Keith reminds us that Jesus has called us to love our neighbor, especially the poor. Many people think they are Christian but have never heard the Gospel. Dean Inserra joins the show to talk about “cultural Christianity” and how to reach these people with Jesus. In his new book, The Unsaved Christian, he talks about different forms of unsaved Christianity. These people are not just “baby Christians,” but of a separate religion all together. We have to make sure that we’re not advocating for a morality. We’re advocating for a worship, really, for a following of Christ. When looking at history, it seems like church movements have a cycle of rising and falling. Steve Addison joins the show to talk about his new book called The Rise and Fall of Movements and how God works in that cycle. He speaks on how believers who value the Great Commission can keep their eyes on Jesus, His word, Spirit, and mission. As some ministries reach a place of decline, we can remember that God is always raising up new movements. He keeps working to draw us back to Him. The important thing is for us to seek God and walk in obedience to Him. Learning to love others long-term is a big part of missions and ministry. Sometimes that love can be easier said than done. In this week’s episode, Ann Hinrichs joins us again to talk about her new book, Just One, which is about her long friendship with a man in Belize. Through their friendship, Ann learned more about intercultural ministry and her friend came to know Jesus. Ann also shares the importance of depending on God. Focusing on obedience is better than looking for results. Throughout the episode, she reminds us of God’s guidance and steadfast love. We look more like Him when we are willing to love another person for as long as the Lord leads. When the Church is obeying Jesus, communities and neighborhoods become better. Our guest, Gregory (pseudonym), shares about his ministry in Cyprus, which includes a church, a coffee shop, and a ministry training school. He cares deeply about sharing the Gospel to the Muslim world. Over the last few years, Gregory has co-led a church in Cyprus and trained students at Exile Ministry Training. Part of that training includes making and selling coffee and wine in the community. This allows students to learn about business and to reach out to the community. Gregory talks about his thankfulness for God’s faithfulness and His willingness to use him in Cyprus. God loves to use each person’s gifts to lead others to Jesus. Our guest today, Jonathan Frederick, has an entrepreneurial podcast that he sees as ministry. On his show, he interviews different types of people and works to show them God’s love. Jonathan shares about his desire to be fully who God wants him to be. He also talks about his struggles of fitting in and how that’s influenced his life. Sometimes, taking risks can be scary, but God gives us strength to do it. Greg Wukasch, our mentor at the San Antonio Water System, recapped for us the Transformative Issues conference on Affordability hosted by AWWA and WEF and how the closing panel of both water professionals and non-water community advocates drove home how empathy means inviting everyone to the table that needs to be. Alan Heymann shares a story that demonstrates how empathy begins within, internally, with your own employees. Brand buy-in begins with them. Mike McGill, founder of WaterPIO reminds us that empathy requires putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, even—and maybe especially—your biggest opponents. We chat with Mike about both he and our experiences with Erin Brockovich and what it taught us about the power of walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. Access to information isn’t just about bill pay and water usage. It also provides utilities the ability to communicate about other areas of concern for customers such as hydrant flushing. Local churches play a key role in leading people to Jesus. David Kim joins the podcast to remind us of that important job. He has been equipping believers in his church to evangelize in the community. In the Bay area, where David lives, there is a great harvest that churches can minister to. Going deeper in discipleship can be a difficult process, but David shows why benefits outweigh costs. By surrendering to the Holy Spirit, he has seen his community change through sharing the Gospel. David has been able to partner with God in ministering to those around him and in encouraging the Church to fulfill her call. It's easier to tell the "hero" stories of missions and forget the struggles. But the real story is that God meets us where we are. Listen for an honest, transparent discussion about ministry, struggles, and healing. Ryan's Book: https://amzn.to/2OoISlE (https://amzn.to/2OoISlE) Within Christian ministry, specifically missions, it can be easy to only tell positive stories. Sometimes, though, it’s important to talk about the difficult times. Ryan Kuja joins the show to discuss his own experience with missions and what he has learned about strengths and weaknesses of ministry. Having lived in over fifteen cities across five continents, Ryan has seen how Western mindsets impact models of mission work. He proposes a model called “constellational thinking,” which looks at the different parts of poverty, not just the surface. Ryan reminds us that God is present in difficult places, and He has a way of making us see the bigger picture. I'm sure you've heard a lot of people preach about how you need to find your niche. Although this is true, as an entrepreneur you want to make sure you find your niche. By that I mean your area of expertise. Although you want to be able to identify your audience, you don't want to close yourself off from other business opportunities. For example, if Amazon had been called Online Books for Cheap, they would have significantly reduced their ability to pivot. A study has shown that about three quarters of all businesses make a pivot within their first two to three years, so you want to make sure you give yourself the ability to. I imagine you're next question is, “How do I know when it's time to pivot?” To be honest, you'll know through analysis. Take the time to sit back, look over your business, your industry, and even do a bit of self reflection. Once you have a strong analysis, now comes the time to play. Let your creative side take over. Don't use your stats to go to an obvious place. Use your creativity to play with where you think things are going. Where you think you are going. To dive more into this, I brought on an expert in balancing your creative and analytical side to achieve the most success possible: Marc Gruber. Marc Gruber is a world-leading researcher in the domain of innovation, entrepreneurship and technology commercialization. He is Vice President for Innovation at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he also heads the Chair of Entrepreneurship & Technology Commercialisation. He works as the Deputy Editor for the #1 empirical research journal in management, the Academy of Management Journal. He received multiple ‘Thought Leader' awards for his breakthrough research. Gruber is actively engaged in teaching, consulting, and executive training programmes in Europe, the United States, and Asia, and regularly acts as a jury member in start-up and corporate entrepreneurship competitions across Europe. Download this episode now, no matter how long you've been in business, to learn when and how you can make the pivots you need to. WARRIOR OF CREATIVITY “You have to be agile and you have to be focused.” -Marc Gruber Highlights - Entrepreneurs need to carefully choose where to play. You can learn a lot by analysis and reflection. There are a lot of business opportunities out there waiting to be discovered. You can combine analysis and creativity to come to a variable outcome. 73% of all new ventures have to pivot in the first 2-3 years. Your niche is your area of expertise, not a specific market. Develop an attractiveness map. Think about a broader brand name to give you more options in the future. It's never too late to pause and reevaluate your business. Take the time to really study your market. Making a pivot is usually not as drastic as it may seem. Find new ways to compete with others. One of the most important things you can do in this world is discover your purpose. It's really heartbreaking when an entrepreneur spends decades building a business that's something they don't care about. They start to feel burned out, and are too scared to try anything else because they've become dependant on the income that's been created. The good news is, you can start making sure your business' purpose lines up with your personal purpose at any time: and the sooner the better. You do that through brand identity. This is where you explore exactly what your business is and how you communicate it to your target consumer.By knowing what you stand for, and what your company is all about allows you to make the changes you may feel are necessary. And don't be afraid of change. It's important in every business. The world is constantly changing, and any business that's been around for decades has had to make changes to fit into this constantly evolving world. On this episode of Creative Warriors, I am joined by branding expert Gregory Diehl. Gregory Diehl is the author of multiple Amazon best-selling books on identity development for businesses and individuals. He is also the founder of Identity Publications, an organization that produces and publishes meaningful books containing ideas that matter. Download this episode today to learn how you can find purpose in your business that will make your personal life feel fulfilled. WARRIOR OF DETERMINATION “The last thing you want is to find success in something you don't actually care about.” -Gregory Diehl Highlights - The point of brand identity is for people to know if they love you or hate you. You need to know what you are trying to communicate right away. There's not only a personal purpose, but also a purpose in your business. Ask what changes you need to make to maintain your success. You can turn something you don't care about into something you care about. Be the kind of person who works towards mastery of their environment. We make decisions, not based on reality, but based on the stories of how we see things. Know the stories happening in the minds of your customers. Empathy is the bridge between two stories. The role of a business is to trade something of value for something of higher value. Your customers are looking for an increase in happiness and value according to their perspectives. Break through your limitations on how big your brand can be. Don't assume there is only so much you can do. Turns out they prefer to find reputable sources on Google. Erin talks about her Water Nerd’s Guide to Millennials internship project. She focuses on how we can market and connect to them and why advocacy is an appealing option in their generation. Running a business is a lot like playing sports. Now, I'm not a big sports guy myself, but I certainly respect the passion and drive that athletes have. One of the most important things that sports does right, which a lot of businesses fall short on, is having the support from others. Entrepreneurs tend to try to do it all themselves, which in the beginning is a necessity. As your business starts to grow, though, it quickly becomes a team sport. You need to know who to have that makes up for your weakness, and who who you can pass the ball to when it's required. More importantly, at any phase of a business (just like any athlete) a business really needs a coach. In sports there are always multiple coaches for one team, and your business should run the same way. Even in solo sports, like Tennis, athletes have coaches to make sure their game is as good as it can be - and they look for problems that the athlete may not see. You should be doing the same. A coach is a great thing to have, no matter how big your business is right now. It's always great to have an extra set of eyes to show us what we can improve on. The last things athletes do that's truly remarkable is seeing things through to the end. Even if they know they are going to lose a game, they finish it. They do it, not because they have to, but because they can always continue to learn - even if there's no hope. In business this is a little trickier. We don't have a clear ending, but we need to know when is the right time to move one. When we're done learning and the game is over for us.On this episode of Creative Warriors, I brought in someone who really knows what it means to see things through to the end: Christopher Wirth. Christopher is the Founder and President of No Quit Living. NQL is a Speaking, Coaching and Training Company that focuses on a number of topics, such as: Accountability, Goals, Time Maximization, Networking, Leadership, Sales, Personal Development and Mentoring No Quit Living works with individuals, families, teams and corporations to help improve accountability, effectiveness and efficiency. Christopher aims to motivate and inspire his clients to never give up on themselves, their dreams or their goals. After playing both Basketball and Tennis in College, Christopher began his coaching career as an AAU Basketball Coach (Amateur Athletic Union), Collegiate Basketball Coach, as well as High School Basketball Coach. Download this episode today and learn how you can live a life filled with accomplishments. THE NO QUIT WARRIOR “No matter what happens to you, you can always attack it with a positive attitude.” - Chris Wirth Highlights - You always have the choice to stay positive, even if bad situations. Always reverse engineer wherever you are looking to go. Just like in sports, businesses need a good coach to be successful. There's no need to have only one coach. Starting your day by looking at your phone puts you in a reactive mindset, instead of a proactive one. In some ways you're alone, but you always have the ability to reach out to a mentor. Be in a place that helps motivate and inspires. You always have the ability to learn. It's not quitting if you give it your full effort, and everything you have. Always be open to listening to other people. Use the “waffle method” of goal setting. My greatest source of inspiration is other people. You can always find positive information, if you look for it. One of the things that holds many people back is a fear of becoming "that person." As if getting recognition or having financial success is going to inherently change who you are. Sure, perhaps it does for some people. But if you are kind-hearted, person-driven in the first place, it's unlikely success is going to change you into someone you're not proud of. Often, quite the opposite. Financial success can free you to do your best work and give back. In today's marketing world, recognition is also often necessary. Or, as I like to say, "recognition is a strategy, not a goal." The Talking Stick is in your hands now. Let us hear from you.
